I was driving my Saturn Ion 2006 car at 25 mile/hour speed when suddenly I was unable to turn the steering wheel , it jammed totaly. I was not expecting that it will get so difficult to move the steering wheel. Luckily I was able to stop my car on the side and than I turned it off and started again , on re start the steering function returned to normal. This was very scary for me as if the same incident had happened to me on a highway it can be fatal. I had heard about the failure of the power steering and recall . I thought if it fails I will be still able to move my steering like a old car without power steering, but the case is different here, the steering is unable to move even with greater force. I am going by train to my job tomorrow , not want to take the same risk. Now I have plan to get it fixed as early as possible. I will contact a dealer and want to get it repaired under the recall by gm. I have a recall letter from gm for this steering problem.
Highway bouncing? unbalanced feeling under vehicle? replace struts ASAP!! okay for the past 30,000 miles I have been experiencing what I could describe as a constant bounce. The bounce has now become so violent that crossing a bridge on a highway the bump will increase the aggression of the bounce to the point that you bounce right off of the road. I have slowly been trying to figure out what causes this bouncing wobble. After new rims,cv-half shafts, lugnuts, tires, stabilizer end-links, tie-rod ends, inner tie-rod ends, and ball joints. The bounce got more controllable for a short period. Not long after the new parts started to break down again. Finally during the purchase of all of these things over again. I find an instance where this exact thing happened to another individual. Driving down the highway with the constant bounce as always (4 mechanics ---- I am pretty mechanically inclined, but could not diagnose the problem) this other individual goes up on a bridge (highway speeds) and bounces straight across and right off of the highway into the ditch. Luckily in both of our cases we were able to stop the vehicle before hitting anything other than some tall grass and sliding around in the dirt a bit on the side of the highway. He takes his family and car to the nearest mechanic (they were going on vacation) and this mechanic knew exactly what the problem was. Relieved this person was that he had finally found a mechanic that solved this wretched, annoying, and odd problem I have never experienced before. The struts were completely shot. The car was not sagging according to measurements. Bumps weren't violent. After replacement of the old struts I could literally push them down with one finger. Let go and watch as they just relax in place. Anyone experiencing a highway bouncing wobble like something is unbalanced then replace your struts!!.
On August 19,2014 there was an incident that involved me with my 2006 Saturn Ion. I was proceeding out of to drive off when all of the sudden my power steering became hard to maneuver and seen as though the car was shutting off in which a child was running across the street at that time I did the best I could and my car bump my neighbor vehicle. I received a strained muscle in my hand that my doctor diagnosed as carpal tunnel syndrome (nerve damages). My car have done this several times. I shouldn't have t I die nor my son or have a life permanent injury that would hinder me from enjoying my life. Gm told congress that they would do the right thing by its victims regardless the nature of injury. I have to suffer with this agonizing pain and swelling with the aid of medication. Nasa I expect you to do the right thing hold them liable for putting these faulty knowing these car was not safe for consumer purchase. Sincerely, tammy shepard edwards 11 / 12/14.

While driving with my family including my 18 month old baby in the car. The power steering went out and my husband had to use way more muscle and strength then I have to steer my car. Gm had informed that I need to pull over shut my car off and restart it. My fear is what if I am going faster then 30 mph and driving on a freeway. But at the time gm does not know how to fix this problem. But they don't feel it is dangerous. Um any time a car is not operate to its full potential it endangers the all people on the road.
2006 Saturn Ion. Consumer writes in regards to waiting for ignition switch and power steering parts to complete recall.
While driving I heard a series of chimes and power steering indicator came on. I then was unable to turn the steering wheel. When I tried again I had to turn wide into traffic because even though I was turning the wheel as hard as I could I couldn't control it. I contacted gm about the recall and they told me that along with that there was the ignition switch recall. I was given a loaner because I was afraid to drive the car after the above incident. I was contacted on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 and was told the ignition switch parts were in. I informed them that I couldn't drive the car to kelly Buick GMC because of the power steering issue so they made arrangements to tow the car to their location. Now they are telling me to turn in the loaner, because even though the wheel is hard to turn , that it is safe to drive. I told the service person that I am a middle aged woman and do not have the strength in my arms to turn that wheel and that I am afraid. I was told to contact gm which I will in the morning because now I have no way to get the car from kelly Buick, when they knew when they towed it in I was afraid to drive it, because of the struggle to turn the wheel. They told me they would see what they could do, however they did nothing to the power steering and I do not know what to do at this point. I will contact kelly and gm tomorrow about this situation that I have been put in.
My wife was driving our 2006 Saturn Ion on a state highway in vt when the power steering abruptly cut out on the car. She was barely able to steer it to the side of the road where she shut the vehicle off and then restarted it. The power steering continued to work for another couple of minutes and then cut out again. We rely on this car and are still making payments on it. This incident did not cause an accident, however if she had been in a more residential area or if it had been raining me, my wife, our 4 year old daughter, a pedestrian, or another driver could easily have been hurt or killed. Gm customer service has been absolutely not helpful when I have contacted them multiple times about this issue. I have confirmed with a local dealer that this is part of an active recall on the power steering motor, but gm could not even give me an estimation about when I would be able to get this fixed. I am at a loss for what to do because they are failing to address this recall. I never even received a notice about this recall or the ignition switch recall in March. I had no idea that I was driving an incredibly dangerous vehicle for two months!!! this issue has impacted our ability to perform day to day functions such as getting our daughter to daycare and getting us to work. We live in a rural area and cannot afford to just buy or rent another vehicle. I don't know what to do or how long I am going to have to make payments on a car that I cannot even drive because the manufacturer failed to build it properly and to notify me as an owner of any issues. I am angry and disheartened by this and I just want someone to do something to get this fixed. I am now going to have to use money that I don't have to pay for a replacement part for a car that is recalled because I simply cannot wait an indeterminate amount of time for gm to address this recall.
My power steering went out while driving down the road at a high rate of speed. This is the 3rd time this has happened within 3 weeks. It is extremely dangerous and has almost caused me a wreck. I do not have the $1000 that it is estimated to take to fix this.
While at a gas station, I counld not get the key out of the ignition. When I finally got the key out of the ignition, I could not get the key to turn and start the vehicle again.
While driving home from work, the message center gave a message of "pwr str," and the power steering went out on my 2006 Saturn Ion. I pulled over, turned off the ignition, started the car and the problem temporarily fixed itself enough to make it back home. I later drove the car again a short distance (about 5 miles) and the same message popped up and the power steering went out. I checked the power steering fluid level, and it appears to be full. After some research on the internet, I found that many other owners of this make/model have complained about the same issue, and have paid up to $1,000 to have it fixed.
My car is actively losing the power steering no less than 5 times every day. I have to find an appropriate place to pull over to turn my car off to reset for the power steering to be operational again. Every day it is getting worse.
After receiving my vehicle back from having the ignition recall fixed my power steering went out the next day. I have filed a power steering complaint previously before it went out. I had pulled into a car was and a truck was coming out the entrance. It backed up to let me in. At that point my power steering went out causing me to head straight for the truck. I stopped and the truck backed ip. I turn to the left to go in the direction I needed to go and the steering wheel locked at a speed of 10 miles and hour when it was turned completely to the left and the car would only go straight. The wheel then started to make a screeching sound and grinding sound and was shaking. I turned the wheel to the right and it would only go straight. I went in reverse and the forward again and it finally turned. Having to other option I drove the 2 miles to my home. Whenever I would turn the car would turn but wouldnot straighten out to the forward position correctly. It was very delayed. I am now not able to drive my vehicle and am for the fear that I could get in an accident or lose control.
I was driving to kids school and as I was turning onto school property my ignitiion binged and pwr str appeared at exact same moment I lost power sterri g and ran car up on curb onto lawn. I could have seriuosly injured if not killed an elementary school kid that day. . Ive tried to call about problem since I recieved a notice for vehicle alert in mail just days b4. But when I called I was told that they couldnt help meafter all because it already went out. . What kind of bull is that?.
My 17-year old son was driving home from a friend's house. Making a left turn at an intersection on a local street, he reported that he heard a chime sound and then the steering wheel "locked up" (his words). He said he was unable to steer the car. He stated that the info display showed "pwr str" and he had to stop the car, turn the ignition switch off, then restart the car. Luckily, this occurred on a local street where there was no other traffic at the time. After restart, the steering operated properly. He, as well as my daughter, are concerned about this happening again.
The contact owns a 2006 Saturn Ion. The contact received a notification for NHTSA campaign number: 14v153000(steering). The contact stated that the part needed to remedy the failure was unavailable. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experience a failure.
Steering got very hard. (electric steering assist motor was replaced 7 years ago. Seems this one has same issues as everyone else that's complained. ) so why are they using the same motor that you are investigating? plan to talk to dealership about free replacement since it messed up again.
I was driving straight down the highway when my power streering notification light came on. I felt that I had no power steering as soon as I went to change lanes. I managed to manhandle the steering wheel to get to my destination since it was 9:30 at night. The next morning I called the closest gm dealership service department and they got me in. The tech said he had seen the same situation from another client a few weeks prior. They had to replace the power steering motor. My receipt from them says a short in the power steering motor. .
I have noticed that the steering "u" joint has and is becoming loser every day that I am driving. Today as I was going down my gravel driveway hitting little bumps the steering was almost non existence because of the vibration.
I was driving to work on March 1st, 2014 when I noticed that the steering wheel seemed to "lock up" for a second, when it loosened it was extremely hard to turn. First thought was ps fluid, did some research to find out it is all electrical and that the same issue was happening in around the same year chevy cobalts and pontiac g5's (all same car pretty much). When I drove home that evening the power steering was back on, until I got 2-3 miles down the road when I heard the beeping followed by "pwr str" showing up on the odometer and the power steering going out. I had a feeling it was going to happen so my speed was no where near what it was going to work. Thank you. Sean spiker.
I purchased a 2006 Saturn Ion in may of 2009 from rockenbach Chevrolet in grayslake illinois. The vehicle was inspected three times for this power steering problem prior to the accident by rockenback mechanics. The mechanics said that they could not find anything wrong with the vehicle, and the sales manager said I was not to bring the vehicle in for any more checks because I had purchased the vehicle without a warranty. The vehicle was totaled after a start up from an intersection when the power steering cut out on July 14, 2009. Since that time I have spoken with three Saturn Ion owners who have experienced the same problem. This problem should be checked out before anyone else is hurt.
Making a right hand turn onto another street and the wheel locked up. Wheel barely moved enough for me to pull into a parking lot.
I was rear ended on the freeway on 11/17/13. I went to get it fixed about a week later. They had my car for about 3 days. When I went to pick up my car, there was no power steering. When the gentleman tried to put power steering fluid in it, he noticed it was electric. He said it must have gone out. Now I have to pay to fix my power steering and I didn't have my car when it went out!.
Loss of power steering. Almost crashed.
After I started the vehicle and trying to reverse the vehicle from parking lot the chime sound came and it displayed pwr steering in the display. I was not able to turn the steering. I turned the vehicle off and turned it back on and it was fine. The similar incident happened twice after that. I took the vehicle to gm service and they wont take care of the issue as my car got a rebuilt title. They acknowledge that it is a known problem and gm wont honor the extended warranty as the car got a rebuild title. They said that if it was a recall they will take care of it and the charge for the repair is approximately $1000. Gm is trying to rip me off for their fault only because my car have a rebuild title.
2006 Saturn Ion was traveling through a flat curve at 45 mph when the steering froze and the brake pedal would not depress. Vehicle began to spin and left the road striking trees and brush causing some physical damage to the right front and right side of the vehicle. No warning signals were seen or heard at or before the event. The driver was not injured. The vehicle did not stall when it came to rest and was driven back on to the road. Vehicle was driven home without further incident.
The contact owns a 2006 Saturn Ion. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, there was a loss of power steering with the illumination of the warning indicator. The vehicle was maneuvered to the side of road where the engine was turned off. After restarting, the vehicle resumed normally. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.
Power steering stopped working. When I got home turned car off and back on and it worked but then stopped working again after driving a few minutes.
The contact owns a 2006 Saturn Ion. While driving 25 mph, the contact stated the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The driver merged off the road and had the vehicle towed to his residence. The vehicle was not repaired nor was the failure diagnosed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
The pwr str message appears and then the steering goes out. Turn the car off and wait 10 minutes, and the power steering works again.
My daughter had just gotten off the freeway, she called me hysterical. She couldn't steer the car. Someone helped her push it to the side. I called aaa to have the car towed and was told what happened was ver rare and dangerous. My maintenace personel who has worked for BMW for 17 years says he's only seen this once in his life. A couple of days later I had my car towed to fh dailey in san leandro, and the total cost was $965. 00 a few days later my air bag light came on and my horn wouldn't blow nor would my cruise control work. Again I had to have the car towed I wasn't going to take the chance and drive it with the airbag light on. The cost for that repair was $172. 57 I was told that it was going to be $240 but it was actually lower. I've googled this problem and there are a lot of complaints regarding this matter it should have been a re-call. I am asking for a full refund.
My husband and I were driving through indiana on an interstate when a notification sounded that the power steering had gone out. The steering wheel seemed to lock up and made it very difficult to turn and maneuver. We changed the fuse in the car's electrical box, but this did not correct the problem. Since then, the problem has persisted and the power steering disables while driving.
The power steering started going out end of Dec 2012, the outage over the following month increased until it happens every time the car is driven. Usually within 10 minutes.
