6 Body problem of the 2003 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 05/25/2016

My hood flew open and smashed my windshield because the part of the hood that goes into the latch broke off the hood. As a direct result of my hood flying open while driving, and filing a claim with my insurance my car was determined a total loss due to the extent of the damage. I have suffered emotional distress due to the trauma of my hood suddenly flying open and smashing my windshield. When my vehicle came to a stop I was inches away from a telephone and was barely missed by a semi-truck that was directly behind me due to having to slam on my brakes because the hood was on my windshield. I am also suffering financial difficulty due to this accident because I am still paying on this car, the insurance has totaled my car, and I have no means to purchase another vehicle. There is no reason why this should have happened. The car is in reasonable condition with no rust except at that part of the hood.

7 Body problem of the 2003 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 02/24/2016

The hood catch detached from the hood while driving the vehicle on the highway. Speed was approximately 70 mph. The hood slammed back into the windshield, cracking the glass. The hood was rusty around the mounting points of the catch and the catch broke free without warning. The catch remained in the hood latch. I drove the vehicle off of the highway without accident or injury.

8 Body problem of the 2003 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 12/14/2015

Engine cradle left front rusting and holes now not passing vermont state inspection and I have had and lived in the salt belt for 11 years. Why is this not a recall secondary to safety issues???.

9 Body problem of the 2007 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 11/25/2015

The hood latch is having to be replaced for the second time in 6 years. It will latch but the spring will not go over all the way so the hood latch does not stay in place. I was driving from nc to NY and after driving for about 400 miles I got gas and the hood latch had loosened and I could not get it to close tight. I pulled up on it and it secondary part of the latch stayed connected so I continued to drive. Once in NY I called the dealer and the entire latch needed to be replaced and it cost me $200 and the best part is that it had been replaced once before roughly 6 years ago. The fact that I had to pay $200 for something that in my opinion is a safety issue is ridiculous especially since it had been replaced once before.

10 Body problem of the 2004 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 08/06/2015

After stopping at an intersection and preparing to turn left, the car could not steer to the left. As he car drifted forward the steering became easier and the car was able to negotiate the turn. As the car picked up speed, the steering appeared to be normal until approaching another 90 degree right hand turn (1/2 mile away from the stop in which it was hard to turn). Not knowing what was happening with the vehicle, he slowed down to negotiate the right hand turn and the car failed to steer right leading him straight thru and into an oncoming vehicle. This vehicle was in the shop one week after we purchased it to have the ignition switch replaced. After having the ignition switch replaced the problem with the steering occurred. There was much damage done to the car and our insurance picked up the cost of the other drivers damages. This was our sons first car and a terrible experience. The car was towed by gm to a dealership that deamed the car safe. He said that the steering shaft was rusty which caused the accident. We had a claim thru gm due to the steering recall and they denied us since the dealership that looked at the car deemed it to be safe. We took it to another garage that told us that it is not safe and not to put our son back in it until we speak to you about how to move forward. The vehicle can be replaced, but our son cannot!!! he was very lucky that the accident was not more severe. We will not put him or anyone else back in that car if nothing is done to prevent it again. We don't feel that it's our financial responsibility to have the parts replaced. Please let us know if there are any options available to us in regards to this situation. We are dissatisfied with gm and the dealer that said the car was safe. Our sons life is at stake and the poor decisions of the dealership and gm have created a potentially critical situation. Thanks.

11 Body problem of the 2004 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 03/13/2015

Was traveling at approx 35mph power steering assist was lost, turned into manual steering. I am a fairly new driver, 21, so I didn't really know how to react. It happened very quickly. Hit a center island, for a lack of a better term. Called gm, they had someone inspect the car. Said there was no dtc codes detected. So there for they are calling me a liar. My parents also had this experience with this same vehicle shortly before I purchased the car. Gm refuse to make damage repairs. Only do recall repairs. I only bought the car one week before all this happened.

12 Body problem of the 2003 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 07/14/2014

Couple months ago I brought my can to gm because of the ignition switch recall. Last week I got a call from gm that my car was done and ready to be pick up. I noticed that the power of my car wasn't there, the passanger window was going down (when I dropped it off at gm it wouldnt go down), and my car charger wasn't working (when I dropped it off it the car was charging my phone same charger same phone). 2:00am today I hit a deer on my way to my parents house (im okay but dont know about the deer) but the air bags didn't deploy.

14 Body problem of the 2005 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 06/16/2014

Vehicle was delivered to local car dealership for gm factory warranty recalls. The car was being driven by two service technicians when the vehicle ignited in the trunk and rear seat area. The fire department determined that the cause of the fire were the rear break lines that had sagged onto the exhaust system. Service technicians were unaware of the work to be done on the vehicle. The vehicle was supposed to receive NHTSA recalls 14v047, 14v171, and 14v153. None of the recalls were furnished while in the possession of the car dealership and could possibly have contributed to the fire.

15 Body problem of the 2005 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 03/12/2014

My daughter was driving to work through a wintry mix precipitation when she lost control, was turned to the right into a guardrail, which heavily damaged the front end and caused her to spin coming to a stop on the road. The damage seems like it should have caused airbag deployment, but the airbag did not, and she struck her head on the steering wheel. She felt as though she hit a patch of slush that pushed her to the right. The vehicle is a total loss and in custody of my insurer. The following day I received in the mail the gm recall 14063 (14v-047). My concern is that is failure of the ignition switch, causing the engine to stop turning and the airbag to disable could have caused the loss of control, and the subsequent minor neck injury, and the total loss of an otherwise sound vehicle. My insurer was given the recall information and after review decided I should move forward with a claim against the manufacturer, and this avenue is detailed on page two of my recall mailing. Thank you.

16 Body problem of the 2005 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 03/03/2014

I believe that the power steering issue (recalled recently and received letter) caused my vehicle to be very hard to control on a downslope hill at 12 mph coming up to red light. My car went from the right lane to the left land of 4 lane street and I hit car in front of me. Now, having received information today about the power steering recall, I have an appt. At my local dealership to check on the alignment/suspension and the piece of metal that I believe to be brake pad that a few hours later shot out and hit car next to me in a parking lot when I applied breaks and turned off vehicle ignition. I will know more of what happened once dealershjp runs diagnostics.

17 Body problem of the 2006 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 02/08/2014

I was driving home early one morning and my ignition had shut off like it had many times before this time the weather conditions being snowy and slushy caused me to get stuck and the vehicle was yanked into the ditch. I had called the claims number after my car had sat at the dealership for about 2 months maybe longer and they told me since the claim was not filed as of the recall came out they are not responsible for it. There is nothing that gm can do they will not refund me for the money to replace my radiator, condenser, and cooling fan that I needed repaired at that time to make my vehicle run. I did not have money at the time to fix the cosmetic damage in the fender and the bumper so that is still broken. The claims department advised me since it was so long after the acident they could not check the vehicles records to see if the vehicle had actually shut off. Now the reason my car is sitting at the dealer ship is because this time my car was stuck running the key is in the on position and couldnt be turned off. I would like some action to be taken or someone to contact me in order to get this taken care of.

18 Body problem of the 2006 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 12/09/2013

The contact owns a 2006 Saturn Ion. The contact was making a right turn at 15 mph when the driver's side door opened without being engaged. The contact also stated that he was unable to shut the engine off. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where the contact was informed that the ignition barrel switch seized and was fractured. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who confirmed the failure and also stated that the door latch was fractured. The ignition barrel switch was repaired but not the door latch failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 59,000.

19 Body problem of the 2006 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 10/19/2013

I recently experienced a malfunctioning door latch actuator. On two separate occasions, driver was trapped in the car because neither the interior or exterior door handle would actuate the door latch, opening the door. Exterior, interior manual, interior power and remote power locks were repeatedly actuated to no avail. Eventually, the door finally opened after using a hangar through the window cavity to bump one of the linkage arms. If there were an accident, this could pose a serious threat to a successful evacuation.

20 Body problem of the 2003 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 09/25/2013

I was driving down a boulevard, I was doing 40 mph there was a police car in front and there was maybe about 2 car length distance from him. The light hit yellow and I saw him brake so I started braking as well but my car would not brake. The acceleration continued increasing, I didn't know what to do. I was slamming on the brakes but my car did not stop. My car slammed into the police car within seconds. My car was destroyed. My hood was bent in half, my front bumper scratched & peeled. The bumper stood on the car only because I kept trying to brake and the car went in an angle where it went under the cops car. Both my side fenders cracked and my front light was destroyed. The whole car frame is destroyed and I was held at fault of this accident. My insurance went up, I didn't get no money to help fix my car nor check the problem. If there is way I can get any type of help I would truly appreciate it. 5 months later the same situation happened again thank god I was not driving my vehicle it was parked. It was just accelerating on its own, I didn't know what to do. I left it parked for a week and when I turned it on it was fine. Im scared that this will happen again, please help me out.

21 Body problem of the 2007 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 03/19/2013

I experienced sudden loss of control of my 2007 Saturn Ion while traveling at 35-40 mph. I swerved back and forth 3 times before crashing front end into a mountain (rock wall). No driver airbag deployment. No passenger airbag deployment. Complete/total loss of vehicle. No reported injuries.

22 Body problem of the 2006 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 10/28/2012

A lowes box truck hit my passenger side and took out the mirror and front panels. I'm getting really disgusted with gm. They owe me 696. 00 for my ignition switch I had to replace long before they decided to recall anything. I just want my money back. Thank you.

23 Body problem of the 2005 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 10/05/2012

My car leaks in the roof when its rains and has stained my interior roof. My power steering went out and on the display it was pwr steering. My outside trim near windows is warped. My sunroof doesnt work it wont open.

24 Body problem of the 2004 Saturn ION

25 Body problem of the 2006 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 10/15/2010

When I first got my 2006 Saturn Ion, I was the first and only owner bought it from the Saturn dealership with less than a 50 miles on the car. Before 30 days of owning the automobile it quit on me in the middle of busy intersection endangering myself and my children. I took it to the dealership where they have claimed to fix the ignition switch on the automobile, several weeks later the same problem occurred they then replaced the key. Then months later my alarm started going off spontaneously, the battery went dead on the automobile which I have replaced 3 times, the ignition switch went out again I had to replace that myself out of pocket in March of 2009. Still after replacing the battery, getting the ignition switch fixed twice, and having the electrical parts looked at the car still continues to have the same problems. If I get gas why the car is not cranked it will not crank back up for hours!!! it will go dead while I'm driving on a freeway does this all the time! this Saturn Ion has caused me nothing but money and problems since I've had it I purchased a additional warranty on the automobile when I bought it and they refuse to replace or fix any of the work on the automobile when I only have gotten my car serviced with Saturn they do all of my oil changes, and maintenance and charge me a arm and leg to maintain the maintenance on the automobile. I have had to pay so much money on this automobile for maintenance that should not even be a issue at this time my car doesn't even have 84k on it yet. The engine seems to shake when the car sits still, the car quits if the engine is not running when you get fuel, the car quits at red lights, the car power steering gets real hard to turn when you try to turn the steering wheel, the Saturn Ion is definitely a dud! you can smell gas sometimes coming from this automobile, and the battery is in the trunk of the car. . . So when it drains my battery goes go dead. The defects on this automobile will kill someone one day.

26 Body problem of the 2006 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 01/15/2008

The contact owns a 2006 Saturn Ion. The power steering failed and nearly caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle on several occasions. The failure occurred while driving 70 mph; however, the speed has varied. The connecting panel on the driver side of the vehicle between the two doors on the outside of the vehicle fell off onto the freeway. The current mileage was 42,000 and the failure mileage was 40,000. Updated 09/16/08. Updated 09/18/jb.

27 Body problem of the 2005 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 06/15/2007

Metal fatigue on passenger car door of Saturn Ion quad coupe redline, where hinge attaches: the problem occurred over a period of 2 years during which time I would open and close the door each day a minimum of 10-12 times to strap my infant into his carseat. The door metal cracked and began to separate from the rest of the metal, to the point where the door is read to drop off the hinge. I brought the vehicle to a gm dealer in response to a recall on the catalytic converter, at which time I requested them to look at the door. The dealership had never seen anything like it. However, they concluded that it was not their responsibility since they were unable to disprove the door had not been forcefully pushed backwards.

28 Body problem of the 2007 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 04/04/2007

The contact owns a 2007 Saturn Ion. The contact stated that there was a blind spot on both sides of the vehicle. When she looked over her shoulder before changing lanes, her vision was restricted and she could not look through the rear window. The restriction was caused by the metal that was in between the front and rear doors. She was uncomfortable changing lanes because she could not see properly. When looking through the rear mirror, her vision was also restricted. The contact believes the failure was caused by the structure of the vehicle. The dealer allowed her to test drive a vehicle without the spoiler, but the failure still occurred. The failure mileage was 500 and current mileage was 18,070. Updated 3/18/08 updated 03/18/08.

29 Body problem of the 2005 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 02/27/2005

Car purchased on 2/26/05. First time driven on highway, a 20" piece of the rain drip panel flew off. Dealer states car must have been hit by rock, but there was no other traffic in front of vehicle. Dealer also said this is "expected behavior" if hit by debris at over 35 mph. If hit by debris, was small enough that there was no noise upon impact, nor was it visible. Since there were no vehicles to the side or front of vehicle, we believe this panel is defective. Dealer refuses to repair, and quotes $782 to fix. Other body shops are considerably less. If this behavior is "expected" Saturn falsely advertises durability of the vehicle, as their ads depict golf balls hitting the vehicle with no damage. Further if this is "expected" this vehicle is a danger to others around it on the road, if Saturn believes it is normal and expected for 20" chunks of the vehicle to fly off.
