Saturn ION owners have reported 192 problems related to car will not start (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
My 2004 Saturn Ion 2 will not start on many cold mornings. It started initially, I drove it to the gas station, then it would not start again. The battery was fine, but I replaced it anyway. This issue presents in two different ways: turn key and get nothing, or turn key and hear an initial crank and then it shuts off. Lights and radio still work. Car will eventually crank and turn over after 10-20 minutes.

We have a Saturn Ion 2006 which is now experiencing ignition issues. First the car would not stop running (hazard!) in my driveway. This was due to the key being stuck in the on position in the ignition! we had to allow it to run out of gas prior to finding the emergency key release that Saturn has noted. Now the car will not even start and when I called the customer service line, the response was hardly comforting. Looking online it appears that there are numerous complaints logging this issue. It appears that there are quite a few people that would like to pursue a class action lawsuit against Saturn/gm as there have been absolutely no investigations, recalls, or even an acknowledgement of said issue. This is the first time the ignition has caused us issues, but looking at the online complaints, it won't be the last. When will it be investigated? will it be investigated after an accident happens perhaps with my 2 children in the car? will it be classified as an urgent issue then?

The car will not start when it is cold or moist out. This is with a brand new battery. But, if you wait 15 to 20 minutes it will start without a problem.
Ignition key broke off in the ignition. Had a locksmith remove the broken key. Car would not start. Locksmith replaced the ignition switch mechanical portion. Car will not start. I went through the resetting procedure to reset the security passlock system. It would not reset and had the car towed to the Saturn dealership. I have seen a large number of complaints from Saturn owners about this same complaint. The only way to be able to get the car running again is to take it to the Saturn dealership to be repaired, and they charge a lot of money to do this procedure. They also are very familiar with this problem and the repair of it, because they have many Saturns being towed in and doing the repairs on them. Due to the large number of problems in this system of the Saturns there should be a recall issued for this industry wide known problem.
1. My vehicle began having problems starting in hot weather last summer. 2. Last Monday, may 24, 2010, my car would not start at the end of the day. Usually if I waited ten minutes or so and tried again, the vehicle started. This time I attempt three times in a thirty minute period and the car did not start. I had the vehicle towed to the dealership where I purchased it. Fortunately the next day, there were similar conditions and my vehicle would not start in the afternoon. 3. There were no codes there showed up on the car's computer. Due to the voltages not matching between my vehicle and the manufacturer's specification, the dealership replaced the ignition switch. I have not had any problems since even though there are been four or five days of hot weather.
2004 Saturn Ion will not start randomly no crank no start issue which is from gm's faulty passlock system its not just cold weather related it was 50 degrees this morning when it happened but when I came home it started just fine its done this alot over the years and always at the worst times I know im not the only Saturn/ gm owner with this problem and there are even TSB 's relating to these issues why are we stuck dealing with gm's faulty engineering.
My 2004 Saturn Ion2 randomly won't start. It's generally happens in the morning. I insert my key, the interior/ exterior lights come on, and then I turn the key. The engine will not crank and will not make any noise. I try numerous times to start it, but it won't crank over. Then, between 10-30 minutes later, it will start. Multiple mechanics are unable to diagnose the problem. I suspect that it has something to do with the passlock system and one of the wires malfunctioning.
I just recently purchased a 2005 Saturn Ion. And when I was at the dealership it started like a dream. A few weeks later the temperature dropped to 34 degrees f or so. And it would not start. I was fifteen minutes late to work because this so called "reliable" car wouldn't start because it thought I was breaking into it. If I could do it all over again, I would've purchased the chevy, this is not a common problem as I've been reading online. I don't understand why this hasn't been recalled yet. We're paying a lot of money for some piece of crap car that doesn't start when it's too cold/damp out. Something needs to be done soon!!!!!.
2003 Saturn Ion coupe will not start in cold humid weather.

The contact owns a 2004 Saturn Ion. The contact stated that the vehicle would not start and the key became wedged in the ignition. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for repairs. The manufacturer was contacted and advised that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The approximate failure mileage was 55,000.
I have a 2004 Saturn Ion 2. Seems to be a problem with the ignition switch in these vehicles. My car will not start when cold and damp outside. I have replaced the switch in my vehicle several times and still get the same problem in time. This is a safety issue because I live in mo where it gets very cold and not always someone to pick me up when the car dies. So I am left stranded in sub zero temperatures. Saturn knows very well about this problem and will not recall this. Please see that a recall takes place. This is an ongoing problem with this car.
My 2006 Ion has only 24,000 miles and has always been garaged and properly maintained. Suddenly, it would not start. . . . . All dash lights on, headlights worked, etc. But engine would not crank. I tried later and it started right up. Next day, same routine. When I got it running, I went straight to the Saturn dealer and they replaced the ignition switch. My car is out of warranty, so I had to pay. At the time, I did not realize that so many other Saturn Ion owners were having the same experience. I called Saturn customer service and was told there were never any bulletins issued on this problem and there was no way of determining if there were any other complaints about this issue. I've read that replacing the ignition switch doesn't always take care of the problem. I am very concerned about getting stuck somewhere and don't think I should be expected to sit in a cold car, hoping the 10-minute waiting period will allow my car to start.
In ambient temperature of 29 degrees, my vehicle would not start. Passlock light was blinking for 10 minutes and then stopped. After that, I was able to start the car. This has happened before.
Car will not start in cold weather. This began 3 months ago at the beginning of the winter season, unfortunately the first day of a new job. This happened a number of times until I was let go for showing up late to work (apparently, a car that problematic was inconceivable). I had the battery replaced, but that didn't help. This happens sporadically, but mostly in the early morning or late evening when it's coldest outside. This past week alone, my car wouldn't start 3 times. I've done some research on the internet and have found hundreds of complaints of the same problem in Saturn Ion's (2003-2006 models). Some complaints have suggested it's the ignition, the passlock key, or an electrical issue, and my mechanic is looking into the fuel pump. The problem is that the diagnostic doesn't read a problem if the car is starting, which seems to be the case by the time the mechanic's shop opens (weather conditions are fairly good in southern California on most days). The other day, my car had stalled while driving in heavy rain conditions, thankfully on a small residential street, because it did not want to restart. It took 10 minutes to get the car going again. You can imagine how disastrous this situation could have been while driving on the freeway or busy city road. This is an extremely dangerous issue that must be taken seriously by gm. I have also made complaints to the ftc & to Saturn. From what I've read online, replacing the part doesn't even help because all of these Ion parts are faulty. Please see to it that consumers are protected. Thank you.
2003 Saturn Ion will not start due to the passlock timing me out. It has left me stranded too many times and yesterday I had to wait 3 hrs for my car to start. I have read reports of other consumers having the same issue and wanted to file a written complaint.
I drive a 2004 Saturn Ion and last year, the winter of 2008 whenever the temperature dropped below 40, which was once or twice, my car wouldn't start. This year, 2009, the temperature has been below 40 for about 2 weeks now and out of the 5 work days of this week my car started once on the first try. When I try to start it, the engine turns over and shuts off immediately. I have to wait at least 10 minutes to start again. Sometimes it will work the second time, usually I have to wait until the third try.
The contact owns a 2006 Saturn Ion. The contact stated that the vehicle would not start in cold weather. In addition, the ignition responded as if it did not recognize the key. No matter what key was used the vehicle would not start for 20-25 minutes. The dealer stated that it would cost $90 for a diagnostic test and this didn't include any other repairs. The manufacturer advised her to take the vehicle to the dealer for inspection. The failure mileage was 61,000. The consume wanted to know what was being done about the problem, and when would she be notified. Updated 03/29/10.
I purchases a 2004 Saturn Ion in 2006. In October of 2007, my vehicle would not start for no apparent reason. After waiting about 15 minutes, my vehicle started and ran normally. This happened again about 3 days later while I was visiting relatives 2 hours from my home which detained me on my trip back home. I took my vehicle to the Saturn dealership in harrisburg, PA to have it checked. I was told that the problem was the ignition switch which needed to be replaced (they replaced it). Two years later in December, 2009 the problem occurred again, this time on my way to work on an extremely cold winter morning. I took the vehicle to the Saturn dealership again and was told that I would need another ignition switch to replace the one they had replaced 2 years earlier. After reading about so many other complaints and dangerous situations that Saturn owners have gotten into because of failing ignition switches, it is clear that there is a defect in these parts. I have read about countless situations where people were unable to turn their cars off! an ignition switch should not go bad every 2 years. This is not a high wear and tear part. A car should be able to turn on and off a large number of times without fail. A car that fails to turn off is an enormous safety issue. If you leave the car unattended and turned on, someone could be hurt or killed. Not being able to start a car is also a dangerous especially when it happens in bitterly cold weather. Saturn/gm is doing nothing to get these unsafe vehicle off the roads to be fixed. They are not taking responsibility for the countless number of ignition switch problems that Saturn owners are experiencing. Gm has a history of ignition switch failures and should stand behind their product by offering a recall of the defective part and replacing it.
I'm having the same issues that a lot of Ion owners are having. Car will not start when it is cold and the passlock system kicks in. Once this kicks in you have to leave the key in the accessories position for 10 minutes, passlock will then shut off and you can retry. If it does not start you have to wait another 10 minutes to try and start. Supposedly this is because of grease that is in the ignition switch. This grease freezes up when cold. It does seem to help if you warm up the ignition switch with a hair dryer or lighter. I don't know why gm does not recall this. They are passing their screw up onto the consumer. This problem has left many people stranded. It is just a matter of time till some one is in a really bad situation because of this. 'sorry your having a heart attack maybe I can start the car in another 10 minutes'. I wouldn't be surprised if someone froze to death because of this. At the very least I know people have missed many hours of work. Anyways, I am going to replace the ignition switch to see if this works. I already bought a remote start which bypasses the passlock when remote start but no one will install this on a manual car.
Whenever the temperature is significantly below freezing my 2003 Saturn Ion will not start. I sat in the car and tried to start the engine for over 20 minutes this morning before giving up and calling off the interview I was supposed to go to. It is not a battery issue, as the battery is completely charged. This issue has occurred roughly 15 times in the past two years, often leaving me stranded without a way to get home.
I drive a 2004 Saturn Ion 2. When the temperature is 32 degrees or lower my car will not start if it has been sitting for more than 4 or 5 hours. I have been left stranded on multiple occasions with this problem. I believe it is something in the ignition switch. During the winter months this will happen every morning and occasionally after work if the temperature is too cold. I have not done anything to fix the problem because it will cost around $200. 00 to fix.
On cold days my car will not start. It will roll over a few times and then the service vehicle light will appear. The car takes anywhere from 15-30 minutes to start leaving me stranded with no heat in the middle of no where. This occurs on a daily basis on cold days in the spring, winter and fall. .
I have a 2004 Saturn Ion that will not start when the weather is cold. This problem happens only in the winter. I have read many reviews about other customers having the same problem with their Ions and most of them say it has something to do with the ignition switch. I think I will probably have it replaced.
My car will not always start, it gets a picture of the car with a padlock on the dash but will not even attempt to turn over. It does at least three times a week and today it did it four times alone. It will start in exactly 10 minutes from the first time I tried to start it. So in the mean time my children and I sit there in the cold and wait. Or my asthmatic children hopefully do not stop breathing. I have called Saturn numerous times and all they tell me is its the ignition housing we can fix it for over 300 dollars but it will go out again in three months, which they say will be the pattern for the life of the car.
The contact owns a used 2003 Saturn Ion which was purchased in 2008. In cold temperatures, the vehicle would not start. The vehicle was taken to her local repair shop, and the fuel injector was replaced. There were no recalls for the failure. Two weeks later, in cold and raining temperatures the vehicle would not start. No further repairs were made to the vehicle to date. The failure and current mileages were 82,221. Updated 02/03/10 the consumer stated the grease in the ignition switch is freezing and/or hardening so that the ignition switch will not engage. The consumer believed the vehicle should be recalled so the ignition switch and grease can be replaced. Updated 02/11/10.
Ignition failed to start vehicle. Vehicle had to be towed.
Okay when I first bought this car back in 2005 they had a recall for the ignition switch and replaced it. Since then back in 2009 when I lived in colorado when it would get really cold the car would not start. I tried and tried to complain to gm about this problem and they wouldn't help me at all like I was crap out of luck. I cant remember if I complained to you guys or not. To deal with this situation my husband and I ended up disconnecting the alarm and haven't had that problem since. Now for about 4 years my car has decided it wanted to keep the key when I try to turn off the engine. And I have to fight with it just to get the key out. My car stalled at two stop lights before, I was thinking it was the battery but now with the recalls I am thinking its more than just the battery.
Occasionally, in the morning, our 2006 Saturn Ion 2 will not start. The battery checks out, everything lights up on the dash display, but turning the key gets no result. If we remove the key and wait 10 minutes, the car will then start. I recently visited a Buick service dept. Where the service person told me that this is a common problem, sometimes corrected by ignition switch replacement (which we had done in 2007, under warranty) and if that does not work, there is an electrical control unit which will be replaced. The total for these 2 repairs? in excess of $1,100. 00 !! here's the real kicker, he said that this will not necessarily remedy the problem! and g. M. Wants another $3 billion in bailout funds?? the funny thing is that the 1994 Saturn which my son now has, with over 100,000 miles on it has been one of the most reliable cars we ever owned. The 2006 Ion has only 27,000 miles on it and has been back to the dealer again and again over it's life so far. This ignition problem has happened about half a dozen times, so far. Only in the morning.
The contact owns a 2003 Saturn Ion. During cold weather the vehicle failed to start since there is a defect in the ignition switch. The vehicle resets to a security mode as if it has been stolen. The dealer advised the contact to replace the switch; however, they would use the defective switch when they repair the vehicle. The failure mileage was 70,000.
The contact owns a 2004 Saturn Ion. The contact stated when the temperature dropped below 30 degrees the vehicle would not start due to the ignition switch failure. The failure was caused by the pass lock circuit that was inside the ignition switch and the resistance value within the pass lock system. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where they replaced the ignition switch. The vehicle was under warranty and there were no recalls. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 45,000.

I bought a 2005 Saturn Ion last August 2008. On November 2008, I experienced a difficulty on starting the car. So I brought it to Saturn dublin for a check up and repair, and they did all the test for the car and informed that they have to replace the ignition of the car as this is the findings of their mechanic. . I agreed as I thought this was the authorized dealer mechanic, I paid for $700+, for repair, labor and parts. . But recently last week, may 2009, my car would not start again. . I brought it back to the dealer and had it checked. . They said there was nothing wrong with the car, it started when they checked and they asked me to pay $130 for the check up. . Which I paid. A few days after I was at work, which is in union city, 22 miles away from my house and when I was about to go home,my car would not start gain. . Same problem as before. . . Had to call a tow truck to have my car towed. . As I relayed this to my brother in law. . . We searched in the net on the issue and concerns and found out I was not the only one who had these problems. . Hundreds of us were victims of this problem. Now, I did had a bad judgment on buying a Saturn car.
Issue started in 2009. Ignition switch would not start car. Once car was running could not turn off car with ignition switch on off. Key would not come out of ignition switch. That was the first time I had the switch replaced. Had the ignition swich replaced 2 more times in the next 4 years. I am still having an issue with getting my key out of the switch, even after the last recall with it being replaced the 4th time.
The contact owns a 2003 Saturn Ion. When the contact attempted to start the vehicle it failed to start. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technicians stated that the ignition switch needed to be replaced. The failure happened intermittently and does not allow the contact to turn the vehicle on for approximately forty five minutes. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 115,000.
