Saturn ION owners have reported 16 problems related to power steering pump (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The fuel pump is leaking, gm refuses to fix it because the VIN isn't associated with the recall, but the same year make and model of my car says it has a recall for the fuel system and pump.

I purchased the vehicle in March 2014. On 7/17/2014 the ignition switch was replaced at asheville Chevrolet in asheville nc. I had not had any issues with the ignition at that time. On 11/3/14 the car stalled while I was driving. I took it the the dealership on 11/5/14. The dealership kept the car for 11/5 and 11/6 and replaced the ignition coil and spark plugs and stated that is needed a map sensor repaired. They verbally informed me that they checked the ignition switch again and checked the fuel pump for leakage (which was another recall). I drove the car home on 11/6/14 and it stalled again within 20 minutes. I called the dealership back on 11/7/14 and was informed that technician that worked on it was not there and they would call me back on Monday (11/10). On 11/10 I talked with the dealership again and was informed that the technician that worked on the car was fired on 11/7 and I could bring it back in for them to check it. I took the car to another mechanic on 11/10 who could not do any work as the computer needed to be "flashed" as it had not been reset when work was done by the dealer which prevented them from identifying any issues that may exist. I brought it back in on 11/11 and informed them that the car is still stalling with the exact same issue that I brought it in on 11/5. The dealership could not confirm that anything was ever checked regarding the ignition switch replacement and stated that the already replaced the recalled ignition switch. They further refused to reset the computer and denied the need for any further work. The vehicle continues to stall when the car is driving and the dealer is well aware of this issue though they refuse to take any action.
Fuel pump cracked; difficulty steering; ignition switch failed.
Within an hour of bringing the vehicle home from getting the fuel pump replaced on April 25, 2014, I received a frantic call from my daughter, panicked she had just been involved in an accident. She states she was driving home in a residential area and the car started veering back and forth uncontrollably. The car careened into the curb damaging the front passenger side and tire. It hit with such force, the vehicle ricocheted back into the middle of the road. My daughter then shifted it into park, turned it off and attempted to exit. The doors would not open and could not be unlocked, manually or with the key fob. 2 men driving by stopped and attempted to help her out of the vehicle, with no luck. As a last resort, she had to break out the driver side front window to escape. I then called dayl graves, and was instructed to have the vehicle towed back to their dealership so they could evaluate the vehicle. It is currently still at their dealership. After kevin, the mechanic, looked at the vehicle, he determined it was an issue with the power steering motor & column.

With regards to the 2006 sa turn Ion, my Ion has suffered three of the major problems described in the complain section of the NHTSA web site. {1} fuel leaking from fuel pump area. {2} ignition key gets stuck in the on position car can not be shut off. {3} power steering stops working while car is running making it difficult to steer. With regards to the last problem I brought my car to a g. M. Dealer and was advised that the problem was the power steering motor. They replaced the motor at no charge. Telling me it was under warranty. They also advised me that there was a recall regarding the fuel pump modulator. I am now fighting with gm to try and get my money back. With regards to the sticking key in the ignition I believe that if we get enough complainants maybe NHTSA can do something. If you have suffered any of these problems and have not repaired your auto please head straight to your local gm dealer . If you have paid for repairs out of your pocket your gm dealer has proper paperwork for you to submit.
First incident of loss of power steering occurred in snowy conditions at about 45mph on the highway. Heard chime to alert me to loss of power steering. Steering column completely locked up, safely made it to the side of the highway and when I restarted the vehicle power steering had returned and dashboard alert has gone away. No further issues with power steering until 9/15 going about 15 mph on an incline; again chime and alert for no power steering, steering column locked up. Power steering regained upon restart. Since 9/15 power steering loss occurring at variable speeds and conditions and on a more frequent basis. Took vehicle to technician who checked fluid, float, all connections and hoses and relayed that a likely cause might be a electric pump or electric pump module to check with the dealer about possible recalls. Full vehicle inspection and tune up with no solution. Power steering problem persists. All communication with Saturn has been unhelpful, they fully deny any defects. Saturn keeps telling me that no recall for my VIN has been issued and no assistance is available from Saturn for the issues I am experiencing.
Received notice from gm regarding power steering assist motor recall. Drove with no power steering 40 miles to local dealership. Towed it home 4 days later. The car hasn't started since. I was aware of the pass lock problem and told the dealer the car might take a few tries to start. The steering wheel is now crooked and the key sticks in the ignition. This is a new problem. For three hundred dollars the dealer said he would fix it. He claims he did the work requested. I wouldn't know because the car hasn't started since. Drive it in and tow it out . . . Now that's customer service for you!!! a free repair cost me the use of my car and 200 in gas and tow expenses. Wonder if I have power steering??? hard to trust a dealer that states" I never touched the column, your pump is under the hood" pump??? even I know there is no pump or power steering fluid.
I am beginning to believe that the issue with the Saturn Ion is an electical or computer based. I put in a complaint earlier about how the car shuts off in the middle of making turns. This morning as I went to work I was met with the automatic steering not working. At first I thought that maybe the emergency break was still up. I checked my steering fluid and it is full. I turned the car off and then on again and tried to move the wheel. No dice. I drove the car to work fighting with the steering all the way there. When I got to work I called for assistance to get my car to a shop. After making the arrangements, I went to try to straighten up the vehicle somewhat so that others could park beside me and so the towing company could get it out. To my amazement the car steering worked fine. There are several complaints on the web about this issue, the key getting stuck in the ignition, the key being removed from the ignition and the car engine continuing to run anyway, and the shutting off while going over tracks and making turns with the Saturn Ion 2004-2007. Please get GMC to fix these issues. What makes me really angry is that the company knows, they simply are avoiding fixing the problems and only focus on the fuel pump problem. Somebody is going to get killed sooner or later btw the shutting off issue or the steering wheel issues. I hope you guys look into these issues and demand that GMC fixes them before then. Thanks.
My vehicle is a 2006 Saturn Ion 3. The power steering message comes on and there is a failure for the power steering, and it becomes very hard to steer. This has happened twice in one week. I know that gm has recalled the same thing in the chevy cobalts. And the cobalt also had the issue with the fuel pump cracking that the 2006 Saturn Ion 3 had. I think that there is a correlation between the two and that the electric power steering should all be recalled in the Saturns.
While driving, my 2006 Saturn Ion2's power steering shuts off. This car has an electric assist steering motor vs. A power steering pump. During normal driving conditions, the power steering will shut down making it very hard to steer. If you turn the car off, then back on, the motor will reset itself for a while before shutting down again. This same motor has been recalled by gm on different gm cars, but not the Saturns as of yet. I have an appointment this week to look at it. I have been dealing with this problem for three weeks now. Mostly driving straight has posed limited danger, however, the other day I was on the highway on a curve when it shut down on me which caused me to drift into oncoming traffic. It's very scary and I have little confidence in my car at the moment, but I have to get to work.
I have a Saturn Ion 2007 with 54433 miles and the power steering pump went out. There is no recall on this. But there is on the cobalt which has the same pump.
I was driving down the interstate in April 2010 when my power steering went out on my 2007 Saturn Ion 3 causing me to almost be in an accident. I pulled over to the side of the road and turned the car off then back on and the power steering acted fine. Took it to the dealership only to find out this is a "known problem" and they fixed it. Then in July, 3 months later, I had a very strong odor of gasoline and was having problems starting the car. I took it to the dealership where I was again told this was a "known problem" and they fixed the gas pump. Now, I have terrible gas mileage and am being offered no assistance.
I have a 2004 Saturn Ion that the electric power steering pump gave out. It started in about 6 months ago and was working on and off and about a month ago it finally gave out completely.
Sometimes as I am driving, the power steering in my 2006 Saturn Ion stops working and I can't turn the vehicle. If I have to make a turn, I have to try to move the wheel. I have caused major delays and almost been in a few wrecks due to troubles turning the steering wheel. The power steering will not work until I turn the vehicle off and then restart it after a few minutes. The other problem I am having is turning the vehicle on in the morning which I have done the research on and found it is a very common problem for Saturn. There is a problem with the wiring components of the vehicle and once I turn the key I have to give it at least 10 minutes before it will turn on. Then I can't turn it off until I get to where I need to go or I have to wait again for at least another 10 minutes. This presents a big problem if I have to stop for gas, because I can't turn my car off at the pump or I am stuck at the gas pump for at least 10 minutes and sometimes longer.
The contact owns a 2006 Saturn Ion. While driving the power steering light illuminated within a few seconds and the steering failed. She turned the vehicle off for a few seconds allowing the steering to reset for a few seconds. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the failure was caused by the power steering pump. The manufacturer offered assistance toward a new vehicle; yet, they will not assist with the steering failure. The vehicle wasn't repaired. The failure mileage was 60,000 and the current mileage was 119,000.
