Saturn ION owners have reported 21 problems related to steering is tight (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I own a 2007 Saturn Ion, I recently started having trouble with the steering, the steering wheel is very tight and when I make a turn I need to physically turn the wheel back if I don't the car will continue going in the direction I was turning. I am now having trouble keeping it on the road as it wants to pull to the left, it is in alinement. I purchased my car in 2013 from the original owner I did receive the recall notice for the ignition switch but never received notice 14v15300. When I enter my VIN# it shows that there no recalls. I drive 36 miles a day for work, I have not had an accident but it's getting to the point that I am afraid to drive and this is my only vehicle.

Several times these last few months my vehicle pwr str light has come on. The steering wheel is hard to turn left or right. The first time this happened I turned the car off and went in the house and got my husband. When he turned it on and put it in reverse nothing happened, it was ok. The next time I was backing into a parking spot, it locked up and was hard to turn. I turned the ignition off and restarted it, then it worked again. Then again in the drive position. This has happened several times. My daughter was driving the car not long ago on a city street and had to stop in the middle of the street, turn the car off and on again, then it was ok. Today I was driving on the road (a city street) and the steering wheel locked. I fought with the wheel to get over. Turned the car off and on again but the steering wheel was still hard to turn and the pwr str light remained on. I did this several times to no avail. The wheel stayed hard to turn. I fought with the wheel, turning corners, praying no one would be in my way as I had to make wide turns because of the hard steering wheel. When I got to my driveway I had to turn and backup several times to get into my driveway. I turned the car off and on again several times and the light has not gone out. I will not be able to drive my car in this condition.

As I was driving home on the freeway on a clear day. I noticed that the steering wheel was hard to turn when I try to change lane. I then decided to pull over at the first exit. When I slowed the vehicle down, it was clear that I had no power steering. There was no warning on the dash console and no audio alarm. Finally, I turned off the engine and restarted the car. The power steering came back and I managed to drive the car home.

Power steering seems to be failing. When turning at any speed the steering is hard and seems to not be working correctly. It feels like it is going to stopbworking at any moment. This issue is a sudden problem not something gradually getting worse.

Tl- the contact owns a 2006 Saturn Ion. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled intermittently and it was extremely difficult to change gears from the gearbox into park on numerous occasions. The contact had to put the vehicle in neutral when the vehicle stalled and was able to restart the vehicle after several attempts. The contact was not notified but was included in NHTSA campaign id number: 14v047000 (electrical system), 14e021000 (electrical system) and 14v153000 (steering). The authorized dealer replaced the ignition switch and the keys, however on the same day the faiure recurred with the vehicle stalling while the contact was on a major roadway. The vehicle was not repaired. The steering was also tight and the contact was not aware as to when the parts would become available to get the steering recall performed. The authorized dealer provided no remedy and the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was not available. Dyd.
Without warning my power steering went out on the thruway. I stopped at the next rest area and turned the car off. The power steering came back on when I restarted the car. This happened twice more on my trip down and three times on my way back home, for a total of six times. Steering was very hard at low speeds and I almost hit the wall to a parking garage when I stopped at a rest area.
Was driving down I-70 at 70mph and power steering message came on and chimed a few times. Then, the steering wheel was locked up and hard to turn. Pulled into gas station to check under hood, but didn't notice anything. Then got back in the car and turned it on and the steering was fine. Purchased Saturn Ion in October 2007 and still have extended warranty coverage. Will gm cover power steering issue? thank you!.
I was driving home going about 55 mph when a signal light came on saying power steering. The steering wheel was very hard to turn almost causing a car accident with 3 cars.
I was driving my car and a deer ran out in front of me, I was able to miss that one but another one came out and I hit it. It hit so hard and my steering was hard like a car without power steering and the brakes were like that too. The airbags did not deploy nor did the safety belts catch me and my granddaughter. It did $3500. 00 worth of damage to my car and my head slammed up against the driver window, my granddaughter was in her carseat but I had it in the front seat so it released the carseat. She had bruises and a black eye, and now 3 years later, that same eye is causing her problems seeing. Everyday I feel so bad because she was in my Saturn that night. People asked me over and over what about your airbags, etc. I never knew what to say until I started getting the recalls and realized what gm had known all along about my ignition. This year my car got stuck in the run position and I called the dealership and was told they were gone for the day. I unhooked the battery cables and the car still would not turn off. Finally after total disgust, all of a sudden the antifreeze overflow tank lid popped off and shot antifreeze everywhere, it just barely missed my granddaughter and myself. The dealership coyle Chevrolet of clarskville in came and picked up the car, and in the process ripped the wind shield for the sunroof off, and called me to tell me my car now had a noise in the lower end of the engine and it would be $600. 00 and up. They test drove it, and told me there was no antifreeze in it. I had already told them what happened. Gm and coyle both say sorry the ignition is the original reason for the engine that is now locked up after I was told I had to come get it or I would be charged a storage fee locked up on me on the expressway home. That was in September and I still have nothing and they won't help.

While driving my 2006 Saturn Ion I hear a click and a warning light comes on the console pwr str. Power steering is lost and very hard to steer. Almost had an accident while turning at that time. When you turn car off the steering is okay, but after a while the warning light comes back on and power steering is lost again. Very hard to turn and park the car. I have done research and this is a similar system used on the Chevrolet cobalt and pontiac g5 that had recalls on them.
Electric steering went out in the middle of a turn and I came very close to going into a very steep ditch as the steering wheel was so hard in turning. Thank goodness I was not hurt, if anyone less strong than I was driving they would most certainly be in the 8 foot steep ditch. . .
This complain has to do with a Saturn 2004 Ion, my steering wheel was not working at all, it was hard to make left and right turns, as driving with a steering wheel that is hard to move is really dangerous. Thank god I was not driving to a far place, but I have been online checking the recalls on the Saturn Ion 2004, and I cannot believe that a company will not recall these cars, I know that is a loss on money but honestly is going to be your fault if someone gets hurts while driving with defects on the Saturns, they will be sued . So dont think about the money , think about the lifes of people that are letting you know that this car is defective, so if something does happened to me, I will sued this company .
2004 Saturn Ion coupe steering just went out with no warning car would not steer. The dash light just goes on and steering is gone hard to control car .
Have a power steering is cutting out when I was driving in a ramp, steering wheel is too hard to turn. Have a error code "pwr str" in front panel too fix problem just turn off the car and start car again but the problem come back again the car is a Saturn Ion 2006 (48000 miles) . The dealer said that I need to replace the steering column aprox 900 usd.
2005 Ion coupe - power steering light comes on and steering becomes hard to turn. Comes on after a few seconds in driving. Steering is hard to turn similar to manual steering.
2007 Saturn Ion power unit light comes on and the steering is hard to turn. Checked fuses and there is no problem. Car does not take power steering fluid, it is an electric power steering unit.
Ion that the steering is being so hard to turn. Purchase the car and after 20,000 miles on it the car begin to go down. But the worst is the steering. The tires were no good the window wipers were no good.
The contact owns a 2006 Saturn Ion. While driving at 70 mph the power steering light illuminated on the instrumental panel. The steering wheel was very hard to steer . The contact pulled over to the side of the road and turned the vehicle off and then back on. The vehcile began to operate normally. He drove about 5 miles down the road and the failure occurred again. The dealer was contacted and they stated that there was no recall for his vehicle. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired at the time of the complaint . The failure mileage was 76000 and the current mileage was 79000.
2004 Saturn Ion 4 cylinder straight drive transmission-mileage 20,800. Power steering message keeps coming on. In daily 62 mile drive, comes on a min of 6 times. Have to pull off road, turn car off, wait for electronic steering to reset and turn car back on. When message flashes, steering is extremely hard to turn. If you are in a curve or turn can lead to an accident. Has been happening since Nov 2009. Call Saturn of concord, talked to service manager. Said there was recall but my VIN # was not included in recall. Cost to repair - $50 diagnostic test - $800 for part. Called gm cust service was basically told there was a recall but it was for chev. Cobalt, not Saturn Ion. Googled and found hundreds of customers who have had the same problem with Saturn Ion 2003, 2004, etc. Gm cust service would not acknowledge that any complaints had been filed with gm using hippa law to justify not telling me if complaints have been filed. Want gm to repair my car problem at no charge. Obviously manuf defect in this model of Saturn.
Own a 2006 Saturn Ion , the power steering quits working and a warning message appears where the odometer is message is ck pwr steer. Car is based in las vegas warmer temps cause it to occur more often. I am a female of medium build and the steering wheel is very hard to turn. When the car is turned off and then restarted it seams to reset and operate ok. The car has not been repaired yet was told that it needs a complete steering column . I did hear of a recall on other gm vehicles with the same concern. If there is a recall on those cars why not this model and year?.
Steering problem with my Saturn Ion 3 - while sitting in traffic waiting to make a left turn the power steering ceased. The dash board starts dinging and the words power steering start to flash. It is then impossible to turn the steering wheel to make the turn without turning the wheel forcefully. This has posed a serious condition because you are usually trying to make a turn in traffic. It also happened to my daughter and she got very frightened and did not know what to do. The steering wheel is even harder to turn than when cars did not actually have power steering. It has happened several times and I have not had it looked at yet. The car has to be shut off and restarted to correct the problem. The mileage on my Saturn is only 25,000 miles.
