1 Steering Failed problem of the 2007 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 02/01/2017

Steering randomly fails in the middle of a turn, as if it "sticks" and I have to force the steering wheel back to center. I'm concerned that this could cause an accident if the driver had to make an evasive menouver or is inexperienced and not expecting it to fail. This occurs while moving, and while parked, on any street or highway.

4 Steering Failed problem of the 2007 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 02/20/2015

The intermediate steering shaft seized resulting in loss of electronic assisted steering and failure of steering wheel to return to center. This is the same issue that has was recalled in the Chevrolet cobalt and pontiac g5 of the same model years which use identical parts, but the Saturn Ion was inexplicably excluded from the recall.

5 Steering Failed problem of the 2003 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 02/12/2015

On 2/12/2015, I received a letter from "this letter is intended to make you aware that some 2003 model year Saturn Ion vehicles equipped with power steering assist may experience a sudden loss of power steering assist that could occur at any time while driving. . . . If this condition occurs on your 2003 Saturn Ion, the condition will be repaired for you at no charge. " however for Saturn Ions model years 2004-2007, gm issued a recall for this power steering defect. Why is this defect worthy of a recall for all model years except 2003? the sudden loss of power steering is no less alarming and no less hazardous for Saturn Ion 2003 cars. Similarly in may 2015, Ford announced a recali of nearly 423,000 cars and suvs in north America for the same defect: the power-assisted steering can fail while they're being driven. The NHTSA has acknowledged the safety hazard that a sudden loss of power steering could present. I am disabled. If I was to experience a sudden loss of power steering, I am sure that I would not have the physical ability to steer my car. I urge you to call for a recall of the 2003 Saturn Ions for the same power steering defect that has precipitated gm to recall Saturn Ion 2004-2007 models and Ford cars and suvs.

7 Steering Failed problem of the 2006 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 04/16/2014

As I was driving to the store I made it about two minutes from my house when I made my first left turn. As I started to turn I noticed my steering was getting difficult, then the three beeps and a display of pwr str went off on my car. Lucky I wasn't on a busy road or thruway on my way to work or school because as I turned into the nearest parking lot the steering was almost impossible. I had it towed to my repair ASAP and was told my power steering motor had to be replace. This repair like any other cost a few hundred dollars that I was surely very unhappy to dish out. I am the second owner of this car and after already receiving the recall notice of the ignition system I went online and checked if there was any recall in the past on the steering. I was surprised to see my websites with people who had the same problem as me however there was no official recall just gm would repair the steering if brought to their dealership, had I known this I would of taken it there. So the next day I called gm's customer service line to hopefully get reimbursed my repair bill since if they are aware of the problem they should be responsible to repay for it instead of just offering to make a scheduled appointment with their dealership to perform the maintenance whenever they're available. I was told since there are four reasons for the steering to fail there hasn't been a final recall made and therefore they are unable to reimburse me. The only advice I got was to wait around for the official recall and then once I receive it then go through the reimbursement cycle. I am not happy about this at all, if gm knows there is a problem they should take responsibility for it. My steering went off completely without notice and I easily could of been in an accident!.

8 Steering Failed problem of the 2004 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 12/31/2013

I was driving into parking lot and electric power steering warning with alarm came on the readout on the dash. At that time it had become nearly impossible to turn the steering wheel in any direction. If anyone had been close enough to me there would have been a collision. I turned the ignition off and then on again and the electric steering returned. I am the original owner of the vehicle and this incident put me in a panic mode because I am physically disabled with disabilities that affect my arms and legs. Trying to turn the steering wheel when the electric steering failed caused me great pain. I fear that if this happens again there could be a serious accident with other vehicles or even serious injuries to pedestrians. There was no way I could control that vehicle without a fully functional electric steering. I consider myself lucky that the vehicle was going at a very slow rate of speed and not on the roadway when this happened.

9 Steering Failed problem of the 2006 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 10/01/2013

Pwr steering fail while driving. Car dings and displays the pwr steering code in dash. Known issue by gm. Took it to dealer today, they said they'll fix it free of charge based on 10187a special policy. It only covers the motor/module and not the steering column. I am afraid that they are going to rip me off by simply saying the whole column is the problem so I'm out a lot of money. Based on research and complaints gm recalled other cars with the same problem. If they used the same part and they were recalled in other models then the Saturn one should also be recalled. It was very scary losing power steering. Gm needs to make Saturn owners "whole" because there have been various issues already. I replaced the ignition switch twice, the key would get stuck and sometimes would not start.

10 Steering Failed problem of the 2004 Saturn ION

11 Steering Failed problem of the 2007 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 05/30/2013

I was driving and attempting to come to turn a corner when the vehicles steering suddenly died. A "chime" sounded, I had no ability to steer and my brakes failed! in a panic as I headed straight for a mom with two children I pulled my emergency brake and jumped the curb. My car was towed to a local good year by my home. I researched the Saturn Ion 2007 that night and found out gm is aware of the power steering issue and refused to issue a recall but they will "fix your car for free at a dealership". After a day and a half of gm refusing to tow my car to one of their dealerships, I had the local shop fix it. I was then told by gm that they "might" reimburse me. I almost died, almost killed someone, missed work the next day, shelled out $1000 and they "might" help me if they deem me fit. I am outraged. Please help the owners of these death machines seek justice and force gm to recall the vehicles - save lives please.

Attempting to turn left at traffic signal when "power steering" came up on dashboard instrument system and car became extremely difficult to turn. Stopped vehicle and checked owner's manual for meaning of message. When vehicle was restarted, steering resumed working. 15 Steering Failed problem of the 2004 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 12/09/2011

I was on the highway at 65 mph when the indicator light for the steering lit up and my power steering went out. I stopped and restarted my car and the power steering worked for about 5 minutes. The indicator light came on again and the steering failed. The following day my vehicle was checked out by a mechanic who diagnosed the issue as a failed eps (electronic power steering). The estimated cost of just the part is $1200. I did not ask about the cost of labor. I have started the vehicle several times since the initial inicident and sometimes the indicator light is not on and the power steering works for a few minutes. Ultimately the light comes on and the steering fails again within 5 minutes. At other times I have started the vehicle and the indicator light is on and there is no power steering. As I am the original owner of this vehicle, this is very upsetting.

16 Steering Failed problem of the 2006 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 09/23/2011

After being on the road in moderate city traffic on a clear day for approximately 5 minutes, I heard an audible alert then the visual alert "pwr str" appeared on the dashboard display, and I no longer had power steering. I continued my 35+ mile drive home, making one stop on the way. When I restarted the car after that stop, the power steering was once again working. The problem did not recur for several days, then happened again. For the past 25 days or so, the problem happens every time the car is running, sometimes happening after having travelled only 100 feet and sometimes not happening until well after that. This is a definite safety concern. In the event the steering failed while a corner was being negotiated, the outcome could be tragic.

20 Steering Failed problem of the 2005 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 04/10/2010

2005 Saturn Ion-3, which shares the steering system with the recalled chevy cobalt and pontiac g5, had exactly steering failure. It happened Apr. 10/2010 in a parking lot when driving at 5mph. It chimed but I observed no light on the cluster coming up. Then the steering became very heavy so I turned the car off. After restarting it is fine again. Same thing happened twice in 09 summer, both at the speeding up stage (<10mph) after a controlled stop.

1. Power-steering goes out without any warning. 2. It happens sometimes 2-3 times a day and other days, only once. 3. If you turn ignition off an restart power-steering works until the power-steering fails again. The car is in the shop being fixed at this moment. It is not safe to drive.

22 Steering Failed problem of the 2004 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 02/10/2010

While we were driving down the interstate at 75 mph, the power steering in our 2004 Saturn Ion suddenly failed. As we were lucky enough to have been driving down a straight stretch of road, we were able to avoid an accident that likely could have occured if we had been turning. Upon returning home, I proceeded to check the 3 fuses associated with the power steering system only to discover that all were fine. It apperas to be the electronic motor itself that failed. This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. At the time our steering failed, my 3 month old daughter was in the car. Does someone need to die before gm is held accountable? please issue a recall so this serious problem can be fixed. It may be a "numbers" game to some, but to the rest of us it is our safety!.
