Saturn LS owners have reported 55 problems related to brake light (under the exterior lighting category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The tail-light/brake light keeps losing contact and going on and off at random, now stays off on the passenger side all the time. There is a faulty connection and it seems like there has been problems with this issue in the past with these cars according to reviews.

My left rear brake light bulb had burned out and caused the tail-light assembly around the bulb opening to melt and prevent the bulb from being pulled out. I checked the right side and the assembly was not melted but there was black burn marks on the wire harness that the brake light bulb plugs into. Five of the six center-high mounted brake lights had also burned out but no melting or charred marks were noted. I also have a crack in the center part of the vanity trunk assembly that allows water to enter, however, there are no lights in the assembly so it is not a big concern for me.

2nd owner of vehicle, tail lamps had over heating issue, NHTSA issued recall on 2 June 2005, Saturn refuses to address the issue, saying auto is to old. Date for fixing issue is 10 years from date bulletin was issued. Was told by a Saturn "customer care rep. " that adapters were installed in Feb 2009. Auto wasn't registered in 2009, and no adapters have ever been installed. I am a disabled vietnam veteran living on a very meager monthly income and can't afford to replace these lamps. I am driving this auto with no brake lights, aside from anti-collision lamp at top of rear windshield. I hope this letter has more impact than I've been able to achieve, as of today. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Having trouble with brake lights bulbs and 3rd brake light.
My brake lights have again gone out at the same time. Last time the mechanic stated it was an electrical issue.
Recall NHTSA campaign id number 05v245000. Component: exterior lighting brake lights. I had my recall service done on Dec. 26 2005. On Nov. 27th 2009. I got pulled over by the police. My rear running and brake lights were out. No ticket because I was close to home. Took it to a mechanic the next day to find out that both light bulbs were broke. Plastic melted down and hit the bulbs. Tried to replace bulbs but the melted plastic was in the way. I took pictures of the melted plastic. Went to Saturn dealer to have them look at it and they said that a front driver side parking light was out and it had condensation under the lens. They said that shorted the rear lights. They replaced the bulbs by grinding the melted plastic out of the way. They said they did not but there was no way to get the bulb past the melted plastic. I took more pictures. So the lights work for now. But it won't be long before the plastic melts down onto the bulbs again. I do believe this has to do with the recall. It reads-on certain sedans and wagons, the plastic housing in the rear tail lamp assembly can become distorted if the brake lamps remain on for an extended time. Not a burned out parking light with condensation under the lens. This could become very dangerous. No tail or brake lights! tailgaiters! I now carry extra light bulbs and wait for the next melt down. Saturn has been no help. Just a bandaid.
Brake lights in the vehicle fail to work, checked both the bulbs and the fuses and both are fine. I believe it caused by the distorted sockets.
My upper brake lights keep burning out. I replaced 5 of these lights to get my inspection sticker. Right now only 2 are working. You can only get these bulbs at a Saturn dealer at a cost of $7. 00 each. I called the Saturn dealer and they say that there is no recall on this. This is part of the brake light system and I can't afford to keep spending $7. 00 each to replace them. I have also checked on the Saturnfans. Com web site and I'm not the only one who has this problem. I bought the car at Saturn of norwood,MA. I think that it maybe a short somewhere.
Rear brake light (left) going out yearly. Housing warped/melted--extreme difficulty removing bulbs. Service dealer r. Confirmed changing bulbs and harness but not the plastic housing while under warranty (03-11-2006: paperwork avail. ) {googled problem:found a site that states NHTSA complaint (#05v245000) already filed (but not found at NHTSA) with mfg campaign #05052 for 2001 l200 sedans, but no VIN #'s ranges avail. }.
1)rear brake lights inoperative. 2)no consequences 3)Saturn replaced lights sockets for rear tail lights according to NHTSA recall #05v245000 but refused to replace light bulbs which were shorted out by the defective sockets.
Recently my infant daughter just barely avoided being seriously injured when the rear window brake light on the 2000 Ls1 suddenly and unexpectedly detached and fell while driving. We had checked with the dealership, who told me that no recall had been issued because of this problem, and the technician could find no reason why it should have fallen. His solution was to have us order a new part and pay a large sum of money for the part and labor to install it. A check with the NHTSA informed us that this was a known issue with 2000 l-series sedans. The NHTSA representative told us that this was due to electronics which may shift over time. Furthermore, it appeared that this I was due to a defect in the design ,and replaced the brake light assembly . Would do nothing to prevent further dangerous incidents. Saturn offered to pay $55 toward the cost of replacing the part. A representative said that they would not issue any recalls or take any actions until forced to do so by NHTSA. They refused to provide any numbers regarding the size of the class, such as number of registered owners of 2000 l-series sedans.

Rear brake light assemblies finally replaced via a bulletin. However, the center brake light assembly mounted up near the top of the window continuously has one of the center lamps inoperative, one time the lamp had just fallen out. It has been fixed 5 times by the dealership.
Rear tailgate brake lights burn out frequently. I have had car for 5 years and had to have several replaced over 4 times.
: the contact stated recall letter #05v245000 concerning the brake lights was received in December 2005. However, the vehicle was not experiencing any problems and was not taken to the dealer for immediate repair. Recently, the contact was alerted by another driver that the brake lights were not working. The vehicle was driven to the dealer for inspection, and the dealer installed two tail lights, reinforced socket adapters and sockets under the recall. Also, the dealer determined the brake light switch needed to be replaced, but this work has not been completed. When the vehicle was taken from the dealer, the cruise control no longer worked, the gear shift became difficult to shift into drive, and the parking lights and brake lights no longer worked. The dealer informed the contact these items failed as a result of the need to replace the brake light switch. Updated 05/30/06.
Brake lights fail when you push on the brakes when the headlights are on. The plastic welds holding the rear housing to the taillight reflector melt and the rear housing shorts out the brake light. .
: the contact stated there was a NHTSA recall, # 05v245000 concerning the exterior lighting that was performed however; numerous electrical problems evolved since the repair. The dash panel lights intermittently illuminated while driving at various speeds. Although the ignition was turned off the headlights illuminated which resulted in a battery failure. The vehicle was seen by a dealer and the headlight high/low beam dimmer switch was replaced, but the problem persisted. Additionally, the vehicle stalled and was towed back to the dealer which determined there was a failure of the drive shaft and this was replaced. The ongoing electrical problems persisted and the vehicle was taken to the dealer to await further inspection.
Brake lights continually fail. Only one light will come on & the one that is on is brighter than it should be. Multiple light replacements do not work. Dealership has noted that the power circuit is run through the light assembly itself & that it isn't always seated resulting in failed circuit. In driving I see multiple Saturns with this issue. Secondarily the high mounted brake light if 1 bulb blows it shorts out the interior dashboard lights.
Consumer received recall letter regarding Saturn tail light bracket housing- bulb repair. When called to make an appointment consumer was told repair work was already done. ** answer required***.
The contact heard about a NHTSA recall 05v245000 concerning the brake lights. The contact's has not experienced the symptoms as indicated in the recall, but was interested to find out if his vehicle was included in the recall. He had not received a recall letter. He contacted Saturn, and they informed him that this vehicle was included in the recall due to VIN. He has not taken the vehicle to a dealer, and no repairs have been made at this time. The consumer was told the parts were not available. Updated 11/16/05.
Brake lights not working right. Right brake light housing is melting and my brake lights don't consistently work well.
Exterior lighting - brake lights and cruise control. Brake lights randomly fail to work. When the headlights are on, brake lights, tail lights and cruise control do not work. We were able to adjust the lights slighty to get them to work for a period of time, but they would go off and on. We were not aware of this problem until driving at 10:30 p. M. And being told we have no rear lights. Have changed the light bulbs a few times and also have been to the dealer 5 + times on this issue. The last time they replaced the complete light sockets. This seems to have stopped the problem for now.
We purchased a 2002 l-300 Saturn new in February 2002. The left brake light stopped working recently, and the dealership in fort collins, CO replaced the brake light assembly under warranty, and informed us that there was an upcoming recall on this assembly.
This car has been nothing but trouble. I have had to have the drive shaft replaced, the motor mounts replaced, the tail light assembly replaced, the steering assembly replaced and I too have a problem with the dash lights dimming. The technicians at the local Saturn dealership are nothing but rude. They dont fix the problems you bring the car in for and you end up having to take it back the next day or even sometimes that same evening for a repair that wasnt done properly. I thought this was going to be a good car but it has been constant trouble and is constantly in the repair shop.
2000 Saturn lw-1 timing chain broke on the vehicle. ** answer required***. When the timing chain broke, the valves and gaskets were damaged as well. The brake light was replaced on more than one occasion. The consumer was informed there was a recall regarding the brake lights.
Tail lights do not work after repeated replacement. Noticed same models having the same problem.
I purchased my '02 Saturn l300 from a highly recommended local used car dealership here in florida mid may '05. It was close to closing time when the final papers were drawn so the salesman and I walked around the car and I noticed then that the left rear brake lamp was out. He told me that the parts dept was closed so to come back the next business day. I came back that Monday and they fixed it no problem. Well a month or so later, on my way to work, I was pulled over by a state trooper and was told my left rear brake light was out. I informed her that I had just fixed it at the dealership so she gave me a warning and told me to fix it again. I set up an appointment with the dealership that day. While leaving work, I glanced into the windows reflection as I was backing up and saw that the light was working. I have been pulled over three times and all times was giving warnings. Is the next cop going to be so nice? it works when it wants to. I am always questioning whether or not its working. This is a $38 part. How many must I purchase? I did not know there was any kind of recall. The dealership did not notify me of any at time of sale. Is there anything I can do now? also, a friend who owned a smaller version of the l-series said he had to replace his tires constantly. Also saying he dealt with continuous obnoxious road noise. Is that a discrepancy? I have had my current tires balanced and rotated twice since may. Is this a problem? the front two do not match the rear two. They were that way at time of vehicle purchase. Vehicle has 36,000 miles. I tried to match them but it's just to expensive. The cheapest tire I could find in size p215-55-r16 is $98. . . ?????.
Brake lights ceased to function. Car rear ended during early morning pile up on I-85 due to tire failure on car two positions in advance. Investigate cause of light failure and found melted/burned light socket area. Tried to repair then called Saturn for parts availability. Informed that there would be a recall in oct 05 but that I could purchase the new light assemblies myself and might be able to get reimbursement later. Cost over $350. 00 per assembly! unable to spend this amount immediately so I parked the car until the recall letter comes!.
Brake lights often go out when the bulb is good. I have replaced the entire housing on one light, and the bulbs multiple times. This has happened at least 20 times since I purchased the car new. You don't know the brake lights are not working until somebody tells you.
Tail/brake lights on my 2000 Saturn lw2 intermittently stop working. This has been ongoing since I purchased the car new in March 2000. They have always worked when the car is at the dealer, so the dealer did not investigate the problem.
Rear brake lights work intermittently. I have to constantly adjust the spring contacts for the lamp socket, with no guarantee that when I put the brake on while driving that the lamps will work. I've research other complaints with the same problems. Numbers 10033374, 10102575, 562085, 10040856 there is more, but the point is the brake light assembly design is not working. This will eventually lead to accidents if it hasn't already. A recall of the vehicles to replace the lamp assembly with a reliable design should be implemented. This is a major safety issue.
1) rear left taillight assembly has failed for the second time in less than a year. Right one has also failed within the year. 2) circuit board shorts out, resulting in no brake light in failed assembly when headlights are on. 3)entire assembly must be replaced, roughly a $450 repair. Old part is with carmax on south blvd in charlotte, as they are making the repair today.
Constantly having people tell me my brake lights don't work. I've replaced bulbs and get them working for awhile and now I've come to the conclusion that tail light assembly is a bad design. The bulb holder contacts that light up the brake light does not always stay in contact with the tail light assembly. I get it working for awhile and then someone tells me my brake lights don't work. Other electrical problems with this car - heater/ac blower quit working and truck release switch on dash board quit working.
Currently the blower motor for the heater/defroster is not working. I have had many many problems with this car, inparticular with the brakes and steering. The rack and pinion was repaired twice. I have had brakes replaced twice, and recently the brake drums, rotators and pads. I have had the power steering pump repaired and from time to time need to have the steering wheel lubricated when it starts to make noise again. I am wondering if I am the only one with these problems or are others with this same car having the same problems. I do not feel safe when I am driving this car. I have brought it to the dealer many times to have things checked with wheels and steering.
I have a 2000 Ls2 Saturn vehicle and I have been having trouble with the brake lights not working when my lights are on. There is a known problem with the defective inferior taillight assembly which relies on a weak spring-loaded contact on the socket to supply electricity to the bulb. Well I was almost rear-ended last night because of this. I was yelled byt he driver following me. The bulb's filaments work, bu tit is the whole assembly that is inferior. I had another close call early this morning on my way to work. I am scared to drive anymore, but must continue to drive to my workplace each day some 28 miles one way from morgantown, wv to fairmont,wv. I feel since Saturn knows of this safety problem that they must want me to continue to drive the vehicle with their faulty assembly. I shall continue to drive the car as Saturn believes the assembly does not need replaced. Please help me be a safe vehicle presence on the country's highway's within one of Saturn's products that they sell this way.
Have owned the car, 2000 Ls1, since it had about 8k miles. Have had to buy 3 sets of tires so far due to irregular wear. Been to Saturn dealership and other garages several times about this before finally learning from Saturn this past summer that the lower control arms on this make and model are defective and that Saturn had put together a shim kit to fix the problem. This solution would cost over $500, especially when you count the four wheel alignment that would also be necessary. Also having brake light problems. Brake lights don't work when parking lights are turned on. Have replaced bulbs several times, particularly the driver side brake light. Mechanic cleaned and adjusted the socket's contact points, but 3 weeks later the driver side brake light was not working again. Wipers don't get windshield clean, even when brand new. Auto unlock stopped working.
