Saturn SL1 owners have reported 6 problems related to engine belts and pulleys (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
02 sensor failure, water pump, fuel pump, serpentine belt, fuse block - all parts defects within short span of time after their 36k warranty expired- atypical problems for car with this type of mileage. Manufacturer contacted and would not reveal parts manfucturer - "not legally obligated to tell the public. " as this car was no longer under warranty, I was informed that Saturn would not reimburse for defective parts but would document that I was unhappy with my Saturn experience. Saturn not concerned about safety factors involved with repetitive parts failures. Offerred free oil change. Did not offer to have car brought in for inspection or extending some kind of warranty in order to study any problems for corrective action with this particular car or model.

Air conditioner started - smelled tar-like smell - turned a/c off, no smell & car ran beautifully, no indicator lights on. Took on road trip, ran fine but noticed engine was hot when stopped - added oil, other fluids fine - immediately aborted trip & drove to dealer- no problems (smells, indicator lights, etc. ) on ride, - noticed that serpentine drive belt that had been replaced 1. 5 mos. Ago was frayed & loose. Oil spewed from front to back of car (although car drove fine & no indicator lights, noises or indication of trouble) - dealer says engine may be shot & car may need to be junked.

Serpentine belt tensioner kept tension on the belt felled. Later, alternater came on, and then consumer lost power steering. If consumer was to lose it on the highway at 70 mph, there could be a serious accident. Mechanic says belt was very poorly designed.
The serpentine belt became loose and the automatic belt tensioner fell apart causing alternator, water pump and power steering inoperable. Yh.
Drive belt and serpentine belt failed, valve body cover and gasket were replaced.
