Saturn SL1 owners have reported 7 problems related to engine cooling system (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Vehicle coolant light low indicator came on. Vehicle was taken to mechanic to service. Upon inspection oil was found in the coolant reservoir. Further inspection revealed a cracked cylinder head. Car had under 100000 miles, and had been maintained. Saturn issued company bulletin 99p01. However, they did not feel any responsibility to repair this problem for a minimal charge due to this defect. Were only willing to offer 25% of the approximate $2200 repair charge.

1999 Saturn Sl1 -overheating, waterpump, radiator fan motor, thermostat and coolant temp sensor all replaced with factory parts. Still overheating. This vehicle has a cracked head - same problem that was experienced on earlier models wher the warranty was extended to six years/100,000 miles.

I have a 1996 Saturn, Sl1 with 65,000 miles on it. When I took it in for a regular oil change, I was told that there was a problem with the water cooling system. The cylinder head cracked and oil leaks into the radiator system. I called Saturn and was told that I need to talk to a local dealer. I was not even able to explain the problem, and was dismissed humiliatingly. I contacted the dealer and they told me they would contact Saturn, after which I was told that I was on my own as the purchase date was before the 6 year window they had designated (6 year/100,000 miles warranty). It has come to my attention that Saturn knew about the design fault so they went with this secret warranty. It is costing me over $1000 for a problem I did not cause! I do not believe Saturn should get away with such a practice, and I would like to be reimbursed for the repairs and my time (I cannot stress enough the hardship and inconvenience I have experienced because of this deceptive action by Saturn. ) I hope you will be my (and the other citizens in my situation) advocate and help us in this matter. Sincerely, fassil ghebremichael.

The engine and head gasket was replaced.
My 1998 Saturn (1. 9)had oil in the coolant. It had a crack in the # 3 cam journal. The car only had 72188 miles. I had followed all their regular service. I knew that they had problems with the head in 1994 and 1995 models. But was told that problem was fixed. Cost was $1990.

02 sensor failure, water pump, fuel pump, serpentine belt, fuse block - all parts defects within short span of time after their 36k warranty expired- atypical problems for car with this type of mileage. Manufacturer contacted and would not reveal parts manfucturer - "not legally obligated to tell the public. " as this car was no longer under warranty, I was informed that Saturn would not reimburse for defective parts but would document that I was unhappy with my Saturn experience. Saturn not concerned about safety factors involved with repetitive parts failures. Offerred free oil change. Did not offer to have car brought in for inspection or extending some kind of warranty in order to study any problems for corrective action with this particular car or model.
Due to ice in a commercial parking lot, while parking my car, car slid into a iron guard rail and the radiator, a/c condenser, support of front bumper cover and front bumper cover were all damaged beyond repair and had to be replaced.
