Total repair estimate is $20,560. 43. The manufacturer mercedes-benz USA denied warranty coverage using a canadian warranty document for the wrong vehicle model. Mbusa has shut down the Smart warranty portal at the dealer level and their website returns no warranty data for Smart vehicles despite active warranty obligations. Sunday 3/23 I was driving west on 225 heading towards work, all of a sudden the check engine light comes on and all kinds of other lights on the dash came on. I got pulled over and looked in the rear view mirror I seen flames. Quickly grabbed my stuff and got out of the car. The investigation at the time stated most of the heat was coming from the engine.

The car won't charge over 20% due probably a faulty manufacturer part of n83 high voltage control box. This could cause very serious electrical/battery issues if the high voltage box is faulty.

2016 Smart car passion key stuck in switch. Stationary in park gear. Poor design of shifter, if that easily disabled. Should be recalled and replaced with improved design shifter. If that sensitive why do they put 2 cup holders near the shifter? simple rubber seal would fix it! the service mechanic said the shifter was damaged because of a coffee spill - how long does it take - because any stain was years ago when I got the car. I have not drunk any in the car over a year. To save money I make coffee at home and drink at work. I'm sure all this summer wet and humid weather caused a problem. After weeks of rain the key was jamming many times before it got stuck. I think the shifter was defective and failed and should be replace for free. Internet search shows the shifter is common problem for this car. Trying to blame a spill for the failure but just a bad shifter. This is the second Smart car I have gotten and the most trouble. I can't afford the estimated #1100 cost to fix it.
Electrical fuses tend to cause electrical shorts, with a/c coming on and off at any given time, often when I hit speed bumps. The lights can be caused by this as well hitting the simple right corner turn can pop the light right out. I have repeatedly told them that it needs better shocks. I have replaced the lights both front and back at a very minimum of 12 times a year. That's ridiculous in my eyes. It should be Smarter than that!!!!.

An hour or hour and a half after parking the car we noticed that there was smoke coming from the inside of the car. The car had smoke and a electrical fire smell. The fire department was called. They disconnected the battery and the smoke stopped. The actual source could not be identified. The smoke was coming from the engine compartment. The car was totaled. Do I have any legal recourse?.
Car shuts down while driving. This happens usually after quick stops or sudden starts like at a red light or when a car suddenly stops on front of me. I have had this issue happen to me several times. I have tried contacting mercedes-benz and the dealership where I bought tge car but they do nothing. I need help getting this issue repaired.
Tysinger replaced the fuel tank on 08/30/2018. The car has had problems with the fuel tank since I purchased the car. The car has been making a loud bang and then there is a strong smell of smoke afterwards. This has happened at least 45 times since I purchased the car, I thought the problem would go away, but it has not. The car stalls at red lights and during stop and go traffic, there is a strong smell of smoke after it stalls.
Since I purchased the car from hampton auto mall 757 865 8000 there has been an issue with the steering, brakes, gas system, fuel gauge etc. . The dealership or mercedes refuses to fix the problem since I purchased it in 2016. I have almost died due to steering problems and gas tank. Please get a mechanic to check the steering and for small tears in your gas tank on Smarts. The dealership I bought my car from refuses to fix issue because of lemon laws the service advisor told me so.
I am original owner since Feb 09 (manf 12/08) and its now 7 yrs old and reqs new battery. Lifting up floor mat to remove old battery I noticed sticky red oily substance (unkown source but now suspect battery vapor condensation) around top of compartment (mostly where holddown bracket connects). Removing the battery then exposed corroded floor paint from battery acid. In attempting to clean up the mess, I had to remove the battery vent tube exiting the floor. This tube had a spider nest inside about 2" from opening. Wd40 did not penetrate nests end seals & had to extract spider & nest manually. I can not prove this is safety related but im wondering if other vented battery cars have this vent blockage-corrosion problem and also if these blocked fumes were toxic to occupants of my car? I took some phone photo evidence. On unrelated problem. In the last 1-2 years I also have the peeling top clearcoat problem reported by other owners of 2009 red paint (non metalic) which is primarily on hood panel & other top surfaces exposed to direct sun which leaves the dull red base color of the plastic panels. (this is only exhibited on 2009 red models).
The cars transmission will not switch to reverse intermittently its an electrical things.
My son was driving down the road when he noticed smoke in the floor board. He was about . 5 miles from our house and went to turn around when he noticed fire in the back/engine area of the car. He was able to get out of the car and ran to a house to call 911. As the home owner was calling they heard the car explode. The entire car burned with only the metal frame of the car, seats, etc. Left standing. In September the car passed the state inspection. When my husband and I arrived (which was only minutes from it happening since we were only . 5 miles away) the car was engulfed in flames. Thankfully my son was able to get out. I'm also thankful for the rain that had just started because it soaked the previously dry leaves and trees that could've been also engulfed in the flames and caused home/property damage to others.
In my garage I tried to start car after emptying water from flooded battery box and allowing to dry for 4 days. Electrical cable running through battery box caught fire and burned completely through, see picture. Battery box flooded from a/c condensation tube disconnect in battery box, see picture, well documented issue on Smartusa blog.
The metal seat belt connector frayed in to two pieces. Replaced with oem part. It frayed again. It's a 2011 driven by a 75 yr. Old senior citizen. Mercedes accused owner of maliciously cutting cable. Extreme safety hazzard.

Upon starting car, attempt to shift into reverse. Car shows either a blank where the gear (p, r, n, d) would normally appear, or shows 'n' when shifter is in the 'r' position. If 'n' is showing, car begins beeping as it would if seatbelt weren't fastened. Shifting into 'd' makes no difference, car can only have 'n' or 'p' selected at this point. Car must be shifted into park and then turned off and back on (sometimes multiple times) for the problem to resolve.
Engine light flashed briefly and went off. Within one mile engine lost all power. As I slowed to a stop, a large cloud of steam erupted. Car was in shop for over a month and most of the engine was replaced. No explanation of lack of warning lamps. A second two week trip to the dealer was needed to resolve all the issues. Car still has engine light on.
Ok the motion sensor stopped working, the radio was drawing 870ma while car is shut off so had to get that disconnected. The heater fan went they replaced the heater fan from my extended warrity but the other two things was not so now im with out a radio that was put in by the Smart car people and when my top is down I have no motion sensor the radio drew so bad of a draw that the battary would die over night while the car was off yes the car was off and so was the radio. I am up set that being it was not my doings at all of the miss hapes of the radio and motion sensor that I should have to go with out a radio or sensor in my 2009 car im now affaid to drive it cause of the prombles and that I have no radio in it or motion sensor. I cant afford to pay the dealer ship or anyone else for a new one I ddint brake it its only 5 years old with 23,000 miles on it please help me.
The car has a problem with not going in reverse when you put the gear shifter in 'r' position? usually after driven and the car is warmed up. The car just rolls when put in reverse, as if though it's in neutral. . When giving gas it just revs the engine and nothing happens. . The car is automatic transmission. And it can be dangerous putting the car in reverse if it's on a slope. The vehicle can roll. This is a normal problem with the 08-09 year. This should defiantly be a recall issue. Thank you for taken the time to read my complaint.
The contact owns a 2008 Smart Fortwo. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled without warning. Also, while attempting to reverse, the gear shifter failed to remain in the correct gear. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who diagnosed there was an electrical failure. No repairs were made to the vehicle. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 29,000.
