The car does not pull out of parking and does not take gears. It has gone 4 times with the same issues to the dealer to leave with the same problem. As a last resort they told me to change the transmision 4,000. 00 and no garrante that the problem will be fix. Something needs to be done this is abusive. And I have no one to help because I do not want my credit afrected but these cars are no good. Not even the dealer knows how to fix them. And Smart USA says nothing can be done because their out of warranty. But my complaint is that this is the 5 time my car has not left the dealer for 4 and half month with difrent test each month is fix and when I go out and run it by the end of the block I have to return to the dealer and leave it.
This car is just over a year old, only 24,928 miles on it. It will not come out of park. I called the Smart dealership of buckhead, GA and they told me to try to "re-train" it by turning it on part way 3 times with my foot on the brake and then it would shift. Nope. I called them back up and they said that I was over my 24,000 mile warranty (even if only by 928 miles which is less than 2 weeks worth of driving for me) and because I did my oil changes somewhere else they won't do this as warranty work. (even though I told them I had the records!) how can a transmission fail within 24,000 miles! I am very upset I ever bought a Smart car from these people. Who would allow this type of "quality" out there. This is the worst car I've ever owned! and I will be happy to tell everyone about all the issues I've had with this piece of garbage. I have a Dodge ram that's 8 years old and has never had a problem! bad Smart car people!.
I was driving on the freeway (5 lane) in my 2012 Smart Fortwo passion coupe in the middle lane at 65-70 mph. All of the sudden my accelerator was no longer functional. I looked down and saw that my speedometer and gear indicator were also non-functional. I was able to coast (despite heavy traffic) to the shoulder of the fast lane - it was impossible for me to get to the slow lane shoulder due to heavy traffic. I was able to use the breaks once I hit the shoulder (unsure if power brakes or not) and once stopped was unable to use automatic windows. I could not move the car out of drive for approximately two minutes. After 2 minutes I tried again to move the car out of drive and was able to put it in park. At that point I was able to re-start the car and accelerate enough to get back on the freeway. I consider myself very lucky to have been able to reach the shoulder (as it ended about 200 yards down the freeway). The experience was absolutely terrifying.

When I start my car and put it in drive it shows reverse on the screen or nothing at all. Then my car will back up instead of going forward. I almost got into an accident a few times because of this problem. This problem has happened to me more than once. The air tubes in the engine already have cracks in them likely because a cheap material was used to produce them, this is very dangerous because it can lead to engine fires in many of these vehicles. In addition, something seems to be already wrong with my transmission and the car is not even that old.

Attempting to leaving store parking lot, entered car, started engine, moved gear shift to "r" but transmission does not engage and the "r" does not appear in dashboard display. Try moving shifter to "d" but still no transmission engagement or dash display. . Shift back to "p" that now displays on dash. Try "r" again, nothing. After several attempts to engage transmission fail, turn engine off, and restart. Now it seems to be working correctly. This type of occurrence has happened many, many times over the last year. Can't identify what might be causing this issue, I. E. Cold engine, hot engine, rain, hot summer day, cold winter, it happens under any unexpected situation.
The contact owns a 2008 Smart Fortwo 451 coupe. When the vehicle stopped the air bag light came on and would not shut off. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who reset the computer for the driver's side seat belt connection because it was loose. Three months later that the failure recurred. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer because he paid $150 for the first repair. The failure mileage was 13,000 and the current mileage was 13,400.
When I drive by an intersection where there are a lot of radio, satellite and cell phone towers, the stability control light comes on and then my car is immobilized. By that I mean that the car is in "d" but won't move. I push or coast to the side of the road and turn the car "off. " I wait a couple of minutes and restart. The warning lights stay on but it will allow me to drive off in "d. " I then park, do my errands and come back to the car. I start it up, all warning lights stay off and it drives normally. The same thing has happened on both occasions when I have driven by this intersection (mt. Pleasant avenue and prospect avenue in west orange, NJ. ) the car is a 2008 Smart passion coupe.
