2 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2014 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 10/15/2020

We had the oil changed in July. In the middle of September I added nearly 1 quart of oil. The oil light came back on again October 15th and assuming it is low on oil again. After extensive on-line research, it seems an oil consumption program is an issue that is affecting out vehicle among countless other model years and other manfacturer's as well. It did not matter if the vehicles was turning, in motion, idle or driving location, the low oil light would remain on. The air bag light indicator has been coming on and off for the last 3 months. We brought the vehicle into the dealer the middle of July once this happened. Since the light was not on at the time, the dealer could not diagnose it. Since the indicator light is appears and then disappears, it has been difficult to get to the dealer and time when the indicator light decides to re-appear. The indicator light re-appeared and we scheduled the appointment to get for a diagnosis. The diagnostic confirmed there is a bad switch under the seat. We were asked if we have an I-phone and charge the phone while it is on the passenger seat. Yes, that may or may not have happened. We were told this is not an issue with an android phone. The dealer offered to replace this item but resulted in an approx. $1,000. 00 bill. They mentioned they would pay approx. 90% of the cost. It does not matter if the car is on, turing, in motion city or highway driving.

5 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2014 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 06/26/2019

Front passenger seat air bag sensor, front passenger seat occupancy sensor, front passenger seat airbag computer, red air bag warning light, yellow passenger airbag "on/off" light, seat belt warning and chime. Air bag disabled warning intermittently comes on when passenger seat is occupied, seat belt fastened, car out of gear, stationary. Sometimes stopping engine, key off and removed, then engine restarted will reset this warning. Other times during normal driving, passenger seat occupied, seat belt latched, air bag warning (red) light will occurs and yellow pass airbag active light will indicate passenger air bag inactive. When front pass seat empty or with weight as light as 2 pounds on the seat, seat belt warning light and chime comes on when speed exceeds 5 mph. Sometimes this alarm can be reset by sharply striking seat, sometimes not, and trip must be completed with the seat belt buckled. In this case the passenger airbag light usually shows inactive. The seat belt issue has been happening for about 2 years, getting more frequent. The airbag issue has been happening during the last two months, starting just after the stop light switch recall maintenance was performed at Subaru dealer in las vegas, nv.

7 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2017 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 04/04/2019

My 2017 Forester began having the passenger airbag light switch off when there was a passenger in the seat and the vehicle was in motion. On the dashboard, next to the odometer, a red square with a lower case "I" appeared and below to the left the red airbag indicator lit. Also on the upper dash, the passenger airbag on light switched to off. In order to rectify this, I had to pull over, shut off the engine and restart it. This happened several various times during normal city street driving. Returning from a 1200 mile trip recently, it occurred near the end of my trip about every 40 miles. Very distressing! took to dealer and they said no codes were in the computer showing any problems. Said the seat might have had something spilled on it which never happened! they said that the red square with the white "I" in it meant the eyesight was malfunctioning which was ridiculous!! why would the airbag light make the eyesight malfunction? I have never had a problem with the eyesight and I use it all the time. When I looked online, I discovered that there were many people who had the exact same problem with exact same symptoms!! surprised that Subaru has not had a recall for this. Are they waiting until someone dies in an accident before they do anything? I recently had a person turn in front of my my 2015 Forester and all the airbags deployed reducing injuries. If my 2017 Forester airbags are not working in an accident, my passenger could be severely injured and Subaru would be responsible!! they need to fix this problem now!!!.

Air bag light switches to "off" at random times even when passenger is seated in seat. Dealership agreed to replacing sensor but the part has been unavailable since sept. 2018 (6 months now). We keep being told "it's on order, can't say when it will arrive. " vehicle is unsafe to drive as a result.

10 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2018 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 08/19/2018

Some time in August 2018 I noticed that the air bag warning light would randomly come on indicating that the air bag on the passenger side of my new 2018 Subaru Forester was turned off even when an adult passenger was seated. I called the dealer who at first couldn't explain it. It happened again a few times, after which I notified the dealer who determined the passenger side indicator switch was likely faulty, and around October 1, 2018 they ordered a replacement part. The indicator light comes on randomly (indicating the bag is turned off) when an adult is in the seat - I have had the passenger shift positions which sometimes turns it back on; I have pulled over, turned off the engine, had passenger get out of the vehicle and get back in, turn on the engine and sometimes that turns the bag back on. Sometimes the indicator shows the bag is on (with passenger in seat) but in the middle of the drive, the bag will suddenly turn off and we have to do the "in-and-out" dance to get the bag to turn on again. At least one time, the bag turned on when no one was in the seat! these things happen sometimes when the car is still in park (but engine turned on), and sometimes when the car is in motion. Totally random. This occurs (so far) during city driving. The dealer originally said the part would probably arrive mid October, then late October, etc. I called Subaru hq and talked to them about the issue. They will "attempt to expedite" but said the part is "on back order" with eta mid November, then late November "maybe," but they really aren't sure when they can get the part. In the mean time, I am nervous about driving with passengers in the front seat without proper protection in the event of a crash. I have been in touch a number of times with both the dealer and Subaru hq in NJ regarding this issue.

11 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2017 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 08/01/2018

Passenger airbag sensor malfunction of some sort causes airbag system to be switched to "off" even when a passenger is in the vehicle. I had taken it to the dealer the first time, and the code was "reset" in the memory and I was instructed to bring the vehicle back if it happened again. It did happen again, and this time they said "the code wasn't in the memory" and that "when it happens, bring the car right in while the light is still on. " that however, is impossible as it was random and had been happening on a long drive. They kept the car overnight in this case, and tried to reproduce the problem. I myself drove around with the weights on the seat and seatbelt engaged for about 1 month in an attempt to reproduce the problem to no avail. This has not recurred since the 2nd instance described above, however I have experienced what seems to be an extremely sensitive sensor of which even the weight of a cell phone on the passenger seat could set off the occupancy detection system. The first occasion happened at about 30,000 miles, with the 2nd happening at about 35,000 miles. It has not recurred over the course of 10,000 miles since then. The news of the recent NHTSA investigation into this exact issue prompted me to submit my own complaint in an effort to be on record.

13 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2016 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 08/02/2017

My Subaru has experienced a malfunction of the passenger air bag restraint system since July of 2017. I took the vehicle to the dealer where I purchased it in 2016, joseph Subaru in florence, ky on August 2, 2017. The technician diagnosed a switch malfunction under the passenger seat. The service manager assured me that the part would be ordered and the vehicle would be scheduled for repair. After three weeks with no response, I called joseph Subaru to ask about the status. He assured me me that the part had been ordered on August 2 and that I could expect the part to be available after one month. The part was never made available. I contacted Subaru of America on October 2, 2017 to register a complaint. I got no response. I contacted Subaru electronically on October 23, 2017. I received a claim number sr #:1-27120984562. It is now December 6, 2017 and I have received no repair and no clarification. No one has made any effort to correct the fault. It is a hazard to me and any riders in my vehicle.

14 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2011 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 03/05/2016

Vehicles horn started alarming and would not shut off. Vehicle was moving through a parking lot when this happened. Passerby attempted to help the driver but was unable to do so. The car was shut off and the horn still sounded. A second person helped remove a fuse which finally stopped the horn. We then had to drive without a needed horn. A dealer was notified for repair. The repair, to our great surprise, required a new airbag installed as well as the airbag-horn switch. This repair was to be very expensive. Many calls were made including to our own dealer in the ne. All agreed to the repair diagnosis given. The airbag had to be truck shipped to our location, requiring an extended stay at a lodging. The actual repair was very speedy. To our grateful surprise, Subaru did not charge us for the replacement air-bag or horn-switch. There was at no time any car impact starting this whole event. The repair/replacement had to be done as we were in FL and had 1500 miles to travel. . . Not viable with no horn or driver airbag. This was a 2011 Forester with low mileage.

15 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2015 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 12/03/2015

7 months old, 20,000 miles. Driving 65. 6 mph, in light rain with cruise control on. 1st time driving in bad weather, noticed wind or flat tires causing sometimes side shaking. Stopped to check tires. Noticed no wind nor low tires pressure. Continued on. Had used cruise control on and off, and turning on and off the traction switch to find a pattern for the iradic driving. Could not id a cause. Continued driving. Car took a sudden jerk to the left, knew we were going to crash and could not turn steering wheel. 'crash' . We slid 40 feet down the center divide. The front wheels were still pointed straight ahead. The air bags did not deploy. We were lucky. The rear wheels had 'excessive wear' , front wheels were in good condition. When the car was torn apart, the main pully had a 1" ding and the fan belt was knocked off the main pully and partically of the 2nd pully. The belt was on all the other pullies. . I believe the traction device malfunctioned when I was in cruise control, the left front wheel hydroplaned. And the brake was applied sending me into a out of control crash, that I could not steer out of. Subaru of America said wet payment, high speed and excessive wear on rear tires caused the accident. They documented the speed and wear of rear tires. Rain was very light, a drizzle. Highway was straight and light traffic. No debre on the highway.

16 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2006 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 06/15/2006

What idiot determined that a yellow warning light concerning the status of the passenger-seat airbag should be on 100% of the time? what possessed that same idiot to require the color yellow for such light(s)? why can't the light be dimmed, or even able to be switched off? at night, such a light on the dashboard is a visual distraction. It constantly pulls the driver's attention from the road ahead. The lights are a safety hazard. Once the vehicle is in motion, no one is jumping in. If there is a passenger when the vehicle is in motion, that soul is not jumping out until the vehicle comes to a halt. Logically, there is no need for the light to be on all the time.
