1 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2017 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 09/04/2025

Srs airbag light continuously switches on in the car with a passenger present. The seat has been replaced, light is still coming on and issue is not resolved. The dealer is refusing to resolve the issue with the sensor/ wiring harness and saying it is not applicable for recall repairs. This is a safety issue that Subaru of America is refusing to address that directly impacts the safety of passengers and consumers.

While sitting in the front passenger seat, following the ods recall repair, the airbag light occasionally says on and occasionally says off. Sometimes the passenger seat belt light is lit. 5 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2014 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 07/24/2020

My airbag srs popped up when on a road trip and said the passenger airbag was off so I freaked out as my boyfriend was driving and then driving back it just turned off and the airbag light said it was on. Very weird called my Subaru and charged me for them to go on and look and said it would be over $1000 to fix but they really didn't know where the issue was coming from and I would be out of a car for a week.

6 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2016 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 03/03/2020

The vehicle began showing symptoms of a faulty "occupant detection system". The indicator would change from on to off randomly. Then there was an official recall, but no fix was available and they instructed to wait until the dealers contacted us. A couple of months, tired of waiting to be able to use the front seat of the car, I called Subaru of America. They told me the replacement was available. Dealer had to get parts and installed it. It seems now it still does not work under our typical use case. We found out what appears to be the cause. A different occupancy detection sensor in the replacement works using an "electrostatic" method. My wife was using a standard relatively thin seat cushion that apparently prevents the new sensor from working. I believe this is a significant liability to automobile passengers who drive in cars equipped with such equipment. Nowhere in the manual (or the recall paperworks) is there a note to not use a seat cushion of any kind. It also would not be intuitive to think this would be a hazard from a passengers perspective. You could have an impale setting on the car that just ends it for you (for those no helmet bikers). It would similarly be deemed acceptable, so long as there is an indicator light that says "impaler active" for people get to impaled by the vehicle when the ai system gathers their preference is dnr in an accident via their music selection. Many people wouldnt think to look at the airbag on or off light. Also you can use a seat cushion on the drivers side without any issue which further confuses things for the general public in terms of having any idea that a cushion is endangering them. I understand the need to protect children, but who puts their kids or baby seats in the front seat these days? there should be a way to turn the bag on or off, or at least on so that you can override a faulty sensor.

7 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2016 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 02/12/2020

Involved in accident to rh door and fende. Curtain air bag deployed, seat belt triggered, no other airbag system issues. After repair including curtain air bag replacement and module reset as well as all sensors replaced, air bag light still on. Issue traced to rh seat back air bag. Apparently while it was triggered but it did not deploy. Question is this an issue that should be taken up with the manufacturer since the air bag was triggered but did not deploy but never the less it needs to be replaced. Cannot tell if vehicle was in motion as it was purchased at an auction.

8 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2016 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 01/10/2020

When driving with no one in the passenger seat and sometimes when there is someone in the seat I get an srs airbag fault but it never stays on after I shut down the SUV. Sometimes when I restart the SUV after about 5 minutes it will come back on and it stays on until I shut off the SUV. Then nothing for weeks. I've wanted to take it to the dealer but every time I start to head over to then the fault goes out or never comes on? I'm sure if I just head over I'm just wasting my time. The last two months it's been much more active with the fault happening. I'm listing the last time it has happen as 01/10/2020. I keep nothing on the passengers seat and I am unsure if the air bag light (yellow light on the dash) shows that it is on or off when it comes on. My wife was driving about a week ago and I was in the passenger seat (6' 225 lbs) and the srs fault come on and the yellow airbag light showed it was still on. I have a trip to pittsburgh PA from allentown PA and I'm worried that if I'm in an accident they won't go off and protect us. This car is just out of warranted and I have about 44k on the vehicle. Purchased it new Feb 12 2016 steve moyer Subaru.

9 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2016 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 10/26/2019

For the past month, my passenger airbag light will indicate it is "off" intermittently when a passenger is sitting in the seat, and the car's ignition is turned on and driving. I brought my Subaru to the dealer to have it looked at and they quoted me a price of over $1,500 in repairs due to the need to replace the seat. The technician told me not to worry about it unless the light is on continuously. At that point, he said to contact the Subaru corporation as this is a safety issue and to file a claim. As of yesterday (10/26/19) my passenger airbag light is "off"continuously with a passenger riding in the seat. The red airbag icon is lit up when the car's ignition is turned on and while driving. On the dashboard it indicates that my passenger airbag is "off". I have received an email from starlink stating to take it to a Subaru retailer to have it checked as soon as possible. Since I have already done this, I will be contacting Subaru tomorrow. After researching, I saw that there was an investigation open to this problem and wanted to add my name to this list.

10 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2016 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 10/14/2019

I turned my vehicle on in the morning and a red I appeared and a warning that srs airbag system needed to be checked. The panel on the dashboard has an airbag light blinking. The passenger airbag light continues to say off despite there being weight in the seat. There has been no damage to the seat including moisture or anything to damage the seat. Happened completely at random.

12 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2018 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 09/18/2019

Ever since I purchased the car, the passenger air bag indicator light has shown 'off. ' the NHTSA site shows numerous people have had the same experience. Some of those people were advised by Subaru service technicians that they must have spilled something on the seat, affecting the sensor. I was told the same when I took my car in. Subaru techs ran a diagnostic that indicated no error codes. I discovered on my own the apparent cause of the problem with my car. I have dogs and customarily place a towel on all seats to keep them clean. When I removed the towel my human passenger was seated on, the air bag indicator showed 'on. ' if you look at the 2018 Subaru manual, this is mentioned in section 1-56. In addition to not using seat covers, cushions, etc. , the passenger is advised to take off 'unnecessary items' or sit in the back seat to ensure the air bag will activate. This seems to be a serious design flaw, one which should be brought to Subaru service techs and customers' attention.

I received email from Subaru starlink the next day too.

14 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2017 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 09/09/2019

Airbag light stays on stating that the airbags are not functioning on the passenger side. Was told that this was my fault due to damage to the sensor? not so. Only normal use, no damage, rarely anyone sitting there. $850 plus labor to replace. Said warranty would not cover it due to a small grease stain on seat.

23 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2018 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 06/13/2019

When my husband shuts off the car, gets out and refuels, I remain seated in the passenger seat. He starts the car and drives off. The passenger airbag light reads that the airbag is off even though I am seated in the passenger seat. The first time it happened starlink told us to take the car in to be checked, but the didn't find anything wrong with it. This has happened so many times that I get out when he gets gas, so we don't have to pull over on the highway and shut off and get out to reactivate the airbag. I have taken the car in to the dealership at least 3 times for this.

29 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2017 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 09/11/2018

The passenger airbag will stop working while the passenger is seated in the front passenger seat. Two alerts show up in different areas on the dash lights indicating a problem with the passenger air bag advising to have it check immediately by the dealer. When I took the vehicle to the dealer they first advised me that the airbag light was do to the seat being wet, placing a cell phone or lap top on the seat. None of those things have caused the malfunction light to go on in my vehicle. The light would randomly come on advising me that the passenger seat airbag was not on. When this occurred the vehicle was in motion every time. The dealer claimed that my problem was caused by a stain on my seat, they claimed the mechanic cleaned the seat and they were going to release the vehicle to me. I insisted however that my seat was never wet nor stained. The service advisor then spoke to a manager and they then informed me that the problem was the airbag sensor in the seat. They said it would take 2 days to get the part. Two days later they told me it was a national back order on the part. My vehicle has been at the dealer since 09/11/2018 and I am still waiting for the part which they keep calling me and telling me it is on backorder. They have provided me with a loaner. Corporate Subaru personnel have also contacted me concerned about this issue. As of today 10/18/18 Subaru as not corrected the issue.

35 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2017 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 06/29/2018

29 June wife and I are on the highway driving when the passenger airbag light goes to off and the fault code appears on the heads up display tell us to take into service immediately. Well we car off and we don't hear anything back for a few days. We called them back on the 5th of July because of the holliday. They told my wife on the phone they were going to replace seat cushion because that seemed to be the issue. Fast forward to 9 July my wife recieves a call telling her the car is ready for pickup. My wife asks what did you end up doing to the vehicle? he said we functional tested the seat it's good to go. So I call the service department and speak to the service manager. I said so let me get this staight you had our car for 10 days and you did a test and hand my wife back the keys? where is the new seat cushion? he said to me sir I want to help you but corporate won't release the parts they instructed me to do the functional check and if it passed they would not release the parts. So I ask what if it happens again what then? well sir we would need to submit the service history problem with the next request to escalate the issue. So I call the wife tell her to go pick up the car but ask the service manager to take a little ride in the passenger seat to ensure it works. . . . So my wife starts the car then goes at sits in the passenger seat. Boom air bag fault light come on immediately with the service manager standing there. Service manager turns red. My wife's smiles and says I can't take this car home it's not safe. So they keep the car to try and order the seat cushion again. The service maanger call me back to (10 July) to let me know they hack escalated the problem to Subaru corporate and the cushion is now on order. However turns out 73 cushoins are on back order for pretty much the same issue. This may require a recall.
