1 Other Fuel System problem of the 2020 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 09/15/2025

When stopped at an intersection the car stalled. It would not restart for three minutes and caused a dangerous situation for my family and children in the car while traffic was moving. There were no warning signs, lights, or engine codes. The problem is random and cannot reproduced. The car is available for inspection.

3 Other Fuel System problem of the 2021 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 08/12/2025

Vehicle began surging during acceleration. Dealer stated that the engine intake valves had carbon deposits that were causing performance issues including poor fuel economy, increased emissions and running concerns. The valves required a cleaning to correct the issue. This is a 4 year old vehicle with only 38,000 miles, this is unacceptable for issues like this so soon. Estimated cleaning cost is $300 and is mentioned no where in the scheduled maintenance information.

4 Other Fuel System problem of the 2019 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 07/27/2025

My Subaru smelled like gas and caught on fire while I was driving to work less than 72 hours after it left the service department at the local Subaru dealership. Earlier that week I dropped the car off for service due to a check engine light and multiple other warning lights on the dashboard. The check engine light was determined to be due to a faulty thermo control valve (a known issue on several models of 2019-2021 Subarus). During that service appointment, the thermo control valve was replaced under warranty, the 60000 mile service, state inspection, and an oil change/tire rotation were completed. The morning of the incident, the car smelled like gas, but there were no warning lights on the dashboard and the temperature and gas gauges were all in range. While looking for a safe place to pull over on the side of the road, the gas smell worsened, I heard a pop, the check engine light and every single other light on the dashboard lit up, it smelled like burning jet fuel, and the front of the car was smoking and there were flames, and all mechanical and electrical control of the vehicle was compromised. The car coasted to the side of the right lane. I was unable to operate the gear shift to put the car in park. I opened the driver’s side door, removed my seatbelt, grabbed my backpack, lunch bag, and phone, and exited the vehicle while it was still rolling. I ran around the back of the car to get onto the side walk. Flaming, melting pieces of plastic were coming off the bottom of the car. Flames and smoke were visible on the front hood of the car. I called 911 while the car continued to roll across several lanes onto the other side of the road. The burning car rolled and hit a guardrail on the opposite side of the road and continued to burn until the local fire department arrived on scene. Local police and the fire inspector wrote reports. My insurance declared the car a total loss. I have informed the local dealership and worked to get them access to the vehicle.

5 Other Fuel System problem of the 2018 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 06/19/2025

Yesterday 6/19/25 I was driving out the driveway when the vehicle accelerated on its own, and not slowly, but like it had been punched. I was actually coasting at the time since I didn't want to stir up dust. My foot was not on the gas pedal. And it was not the floor mat. It happened on its own, the first time in 87,000 miles. It probably cannot easily be replicated as it was completely random, although now that it's happened once, it very well could happen again if there's a faulty or aging part or sensor. Neither the local dealer nor Subaru has acknowledged the problem (I called both today) but it's a serious safety issue. No check engine light or other means of warning. It just happened out of nowhere. Glad I was in the driveway and not in town waiting while a pedestrian was crossing the street.

6 Other Fuel System problem of the 2019 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 04/30/2025

My car is a 2019 suaru Forester 54,268mi I was driving from houston to dallas on the freeway during a thunderstorm on [xxx] [xxx]. I got off the freeway and was almost on the road near my house when my car engine suddenly died, I had no control of my car, my car engine would not start anymore. I had no problems with my car before. I towed it home the next day and had it checked with a scanner and it came up with about 25 check engine codes. 5/14/2025 Subaru dealer (ewing of plano) had it checked and had the thermo control valve replaced because it was bad. They had no previous notices or recalls. If my car had stopped in the middle of the freeway it could have been a major accident. . Other people's lives are important. . Please look into this issue information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

7 Other Fuel System problem of the 2015 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 04/15/2025

Unknown. Often when I attempt to accelerate after stopping at a stop sign, the car hesitates, sometimes lunges ahead and then sometimes practically dying before accelerating normally. There have been times when it simply feels like a fuel pump problem and I know that toyotas with this same denso fuel pump have had documented problems similar to mine. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

8 Other Fuel System problem of the 2018 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 03/31/2025

2018 Subaru Forester stalling in intersection prior there was an occasional delay in starting. After light changed I was starting to move down a hill toward expressway entrance at about 25 mph. I was in the middle lane and all cars were coming behind me at 50mph. I just entered the intersection when my car just stopped. It would not move. I was trying the gas pedal but car did not move. Suddenly it began jerky movements, moved a few feet, sputtering and stopped again. Now I’m in the middle of the intersection. I looked in my rear view mirror and saw cars speeding down hill, honking as they went around me. The car repeated jerky movements, moved a few feet and stopped again. I was still in the intersection and light was about to change. It finally repeated the jerky movements, etc until it stopped a third time. Fortunately I was out of the intersection and along the roadside. I reflected on what had just happened a few minutes. Then I made my way back home 35 minutes slowly driving on back roads allowing cars to pass just in case it would happen again. Dealer told me there was extended warranty on fuel pump but he could not repair as he could not duplicate stalling. How many times do I have to stall in city traffici or expressway before my fuel pump will be replaced? I had a kidney transplant that saved my life. I will not let a safety recalled fuel pump put me in danger again.

9 Other Fuel System problem of the 2018 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 03/25/2025

Fuel pump. Stalled in intersection in middle lane at expressway entrance. Car stalled 3 x before I could move out of intersection to safety. Kept pressing gas peddle but car would not move then sputtered going a few feet before stopping again. 3x cars were going thru light and around me at 45 mph. Honking, swerving into other lane, barely avoiding hitting my car as well as other cars.

10 Other Fuel System problem of the 2023 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 01/20/2025

The check engine light and a flashing 's' and other lights stating the safety features such as eyesight, lane departure, rab, etc. Are turned off. This started on 1/15/25, and I took the car to the dealership on 1/16/25. The dealership stated the evap system leak detection pump sensor indicated a leak, and the evaporateleak check module needs to be replaced but is back-ordered until mid-March 2025. They turned off all the lights and told me I could keep driving the vehicle. On 1/20/25, all of the lights were back on. The car lags to accelerate and is using gas at a rapid rate. I feel unsafe driving the car for another two months with the check engine light on and the acceleration capacity decreased. The dealership will not allow me a rental vehicle unless I leave it on their lot for two months until the part arrives. I cannot agree with that. The dealership informed me that multiple Forester and crosstreks models have the same problem. This car was purchased brand new from the olympia dealership and it currently has about 22,000 miles on it.

11 Other Fuel System problem of the 2015 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 11/27/2024

This is the fourth time we have had the same problem. We were on a long drive (more than 1 hour on the road) on the freeway going 65-70mph. The fuel gauge showed 2 or 3 bars left and the estimated mileage left was 40-70 miles left when the car lost forward power, the lights still worked and electrical systems were functional but it was as though there was not gas left. We had to call a tow truck to bring us gas. As soon as they put a couple gallons in the tank the car started and continued without issue to the nearest gas station. This was extremely dangerous as we had our children in the car and had a loss of power on the freeway and had to sit on the side of the freeway in a dangerous area waiting for gas to be delivered. We took it to our mechanic who could not detect any problems with the sensors, or other systems, there were no codes generated and no warning before it lost power, the low fuel light hadn't even gone on.

12 Other Fuel System problem of the 2011 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 11/10/2024

I have a single-owner 2011 automatic-transmission Subaru Forester [145k miles]. In a parking lot, I started the car as usual and shifted into reverse. I immediately noticed another car was approaching behind me and reflexively pushed on the brake to give the oncoming vehicle the right of way. As I pushed on the brake, the car suddenly and without warning surged backwards as the engine revved and "stuck" at a high rpm level. Surprised by the sudden loss of control and to stop the lunge backwards, I immediately released the brake pedal and shifted into neutral. I believe this reflexive action was solely attributable to my long history driving manual transmissions which "teaches" your brain that as an alternative to using the brake you can clutch [or if necessary "pop"] to neutral to disengage the engine from the wheels to control the vehicle. People without manual transmission experience would probably keep pressing the brake as their only option to regain control. The car stopped but the engine continued to rev at high rpms for a few moments then returned to normal rpms. No damages. This has never happened before and I was unable to duplicate the sequence of events which I tried to do immediately after the incident. I thought the gas pedal might be mechanically compromised . . . For example by the floor mat . . . But found no evidence of that. The incident remains a mystery mechanically, so all I can surmise is some electrical issue.

13 Other Fuel System problem of the 2018 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 10/12/2024

The initial incident happened when I was accelerating uphill. When I pressed the gas pedal to accelerate, the car began jerking and sputtering. I released the gas pedal and let the car coast, as I was heading toward a stop sign. After I stopped and then accelerated the second time, the engine seemed to smooth out. Nothing further happened until about 1 week later. The second incident, I was 35 minutes into an hour-long drive. I was going around 45-55mph when the same issue happened suddenly: I pressed the gas pedal and the car started shaking and sputtering. If I released the gas pedal, the car was fine. All check engine lights came on and were flashing. I lowered my speed into the 30s, and the issue continued to happen, regardless of what speed I was driving at. If I was accelerating, the car was shaking a lot. At stop signs, the lights would turn off, but pop on as soon as I began driving again. I was able to make it to my destination and when I parked the car, it was shaking a lot while idling. It felt like the engine was about to die or shut off. It was late so I turned the vehicle off and left it parked for the night. The next morning, when I started the car, it was continuing to shake/sputter during idle and I drove it briefly to see how it ran. It continued to shake when pressing the gas pedal, however, the check engine lights were not on. Since I had to drive back home, I decided to take it slow and began the two-hour drive back. The engine again seemed like it wanted to die as I let the car warm up, but it did not shut off. Initially when driving, the car continued to have the same problem - shaking whenever I pressed the gas pedal, no matter the speed. The check engine panel lights did not come on, however, and after driving for about 20 minutes, the issue cleared up. I've only driven it as needed since then and it is currently running ok, but, given the numerous fuel pump recalls I'm concerned there is a defect with this model.

14 Other Fuel System problem of the 2020 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 09/03/2024

Vehicle traveling w on [xxx] bryan TX. Automobile suddenly started shaking and not developing power, driver was able to pull off on the shoulder barely clearing the #2 lane. The engine would crank but not sustain operation. The auto required transport to the home garaging location. Subsequent analysis of the fuel showed it to be gasoline, no water, lacked appearance of any foreign matter. With the ignition on 12v were detected at the gas tank terminal, however the in tank pump would not produce fuel flow at the connection at the top of the tank. Had the vehicle been operating in the #1 lane it may not have been possible to clear the traveled lanes thus causing a traffic safety problem. A state trooper did provide protection until the vehicle was transported. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

15 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 09/02/2024

As I said earlier: car stopped dead in the middle of I-94, going 70 mph. No reason--had 1/4 tank of gasoline, alternator working, etc. Come to find out that you all recalled 2018 Subaru Foresters for this exact same problem--cars stalling while driving. That was for a faulty fuel pump. Discussion boards by owners are full of the same exact problem from 2014-2019. You should issue a recall there too, imho, since obviously the 2018 are the tip of the iceberg!.

16 Other Fuel System problem of the 2020 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 08/01/2024

A week after my routine oil changed at 31k, the check engine light along with flashing "s" pop up. The next day the check engine disappeared. I was some what happy and continue to drive car as normal for 2 days, then check engine light came back again and this time is staying for good. I just can't believed that 4 years old car is having this issue. I've owned so many cars prior to this 2020 Subaru Forester, never once that those cars have problems like this one. I feel that I'm at risk driving without no eyesight or collision prevention warning. . When the check engine comes on, those two things are disable. After a long research and reading about so many people with same issues, I feel that they should be a recalling to fix the thermal valve control.

17 Other Fuel System problem of the 2022 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 06/17/2024

The car has stalled and/ or hesitated on multiple occasions especially in lower gear like 0-20mph. These incidents are frightening and could pose a safety hazard.

18 Other Fuel System problem of the 2019 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 05/10/2024

Most of the safety quiet. Motor cut out, eyesight quiet working, check engine light came on service person said the diagnostic showed a code p2682 engine coolant bypass valve control low. Steering light came on. No prior warnings. Happened while driving at speed limit on interstate.

19 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 03/28/2024

20 Other Fuel System problem of the 2019 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 03/01/2024

Car had just been serviced by Subaru service dept on 2/27/2024. On 3/1/2024, while travelling in heavy rush hour traffic, we smelled a very strong odor of gasoline and were alerted by another driver that our car was leaking a large amount of gasoline in the roadway. We pulled over to a safe area, evacuated the car, and the car burst into flames. Fire was extinguished by the wantagh fire department. Police report by NY state police was obtained. Car was removed by tow truck.

21 Other Fuel System problem of the 2014 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 02/20/2024

This morning 2/20/2024 I was driving up a main commercial street in traffic, going about 10 -15 mph. I did not have my foot in the accelerator or brake as I was on a very slight incline. Suddenly, the car accelerated, made a roaring sound as if the accelerator had been stepped on strongly and started to jerk forward. I jammed on the brake and stopped the car. I did not hit the car in front of me. This happened once before, several years ago, but not to the extent of this time. The car has 45, 400 miles on it and was just serviced at the Subaru dealer 2 weeks ago. There were no problems noted at that time. There were no warning lights, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to this incident. It was probably the accelerator and fuel systems that failed. I have made an appointment with the Subaru dealer, but can't get in for a week. It was a dangerous and frightening incident. Fortunately, I was quick to respond and had a safe distance from the car in front of me. It could have been a very serious event had I not been quick to respond and had read in the past about this problem with the Subaru Forester. I tend to be a very alert, focused, and aware driver.

22 Other Fuel System problem of the 2017 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 01/10/2024

When I pulled into a parking spot in a parking lot, the car seemed to go faster than I intended. I swiped a car next to me, which to me as it was not a tight space. I immediately, turned off the engine and dealt with the passenger of the other vehicle, exchanging information. After sometime, I got back in my car to move it to another location. As soon as the motor was running in reverse, in began to accelerate making a loud roaring noise. I stepped on the brakes, meanwhile going in reverse at an accelerating speed, trying to keep away from cars parked on either side. I also pulled up the emergency brake. At the end of the row, I felt I could move forward without hitting many cars and hoping that in doing so, it would now slow down. It did not. At that point, I thought the only way to stop it, was going to be hitting something. (I did not want to go out of the parking lot into traffic). I aimed for a small tree, not realizing that there was a high curb surrounding it. The car hit the curb and flew over it, missing the tree, blowing out a rear tire, and hitting another parked car. That car slid into another car causing a chain reaction with still another car. There were 6 cars that were damaged in all. My insurance company is involved, but I do have a cap on how much liability I can pay.

23 Other Fuel System problem of the 2022 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 12/29/2023

I was pulling into a parking space at my apartment complex. I had my foot on the brake, and the vehicle slowed as I approached the space. As I turned into the space with my foot light on the brake, the engine suddenly revved and the Forester surged forward. At no point did I touch the accelerator. I have a size 7 (women’s) shoe, and the floor mat was flat and secured as always. The vehicle surged forward and drove over the curb and onto the sidewalk. No warning lights came on, no warning alarms sounded. It only stopped when I slammed the brake to the floor. I then reversed off the sidewalk and put the car in park and turned it off. This is the first time this has happened.

24 Other Fuel System problem of the 2019 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 12/27/2023

The engine cuts out and stalls while turning through an intersection (with danger of being rear ended) or driving through parking lots at low speed. The car will zoom forward right after that, usually while in a parking lot nearly hitting pedestrians on several occasions! this issue is a frequent occurrence becoming more dangerous the past 2 years. We have our car serviced at the Subaru dealership in prescott, az and have told them about this. They tell us the same thing when we tell them what it does, they say "no it doesn't".

25 Other Fuel System problem of the 2021 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 12/22/2023

Once or twice a day my vehicle hesitates from a light and I have to almost floor it to get it going again. I have brought it to 2 different Subaru dealers 3 times and they say they can't fix the problem.

26 Other Fuel System problem of the 2019 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 11/30/2023

On November 30th around 5:30 pm on highway 161 in york county,SC my wife struck and killed a 6 point buck. Thankfully a SC highway officer was coming in the opposite direction saw the accident and aided my wife in getting out of the car as he had seen a fire in the engine compartment area. Shortly thereafter the car exploded and was engulfed in flames and totally destroyed. Neither the patrol officer nor the tow operator can remember an auto fire resulting from striking a deer.

27 Other Fuel System problem of the 2017 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 11/26/2023

On three separate occasions, my Forester has stalled while driving. The engine loses power, and pressing the accelerator increases the rpms sporadically. We have had to coast to the side of the road. Then, when we try to restart it, it turns over but never actually starts. After a couple of tries, it eventually will start and run normally again. Because this happens while driving at highway speeds, it is a safety issue. The problem happens rarely, but is dangerous when it happens. There are no warning lights or indication of what went wrong and mechanics do not find an issue, as it hasn’t happened while they were driving.

28 Other Fuel System problem of the 2021 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 11/06/2023

Vehicle was parked and idling unoccupied for under 5 minutes when an extremely noxious, hot blast of fumes came from underneath the back. Black smoke immediately entered the passenger cabin through the vents and flames were visible in the engine compartment and running onto the ground. Entire vehicle was burned beyond recognition in a matter of minutes. Ten days earlier the tcv, a known problem, had been replaced at a dealership per TSB 09-80-21. The vehicle had been driven under 300 miles since the replacement. Afterwards, a manufacturer rep inspected the vehicle, indicated the fire started in right rear of the engine compartment, could have possibly been a fuel leak, but damage was too extensive to determine the exact cause. The referenced TSB explicitly requires a new fuel line for every tcv replacement.

29 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 10/31/2023

October 31, 2023 at approximately 11:45 am was slowly pulling in to heb curbside parking spot #ff592 at 651 n u. S. 183 in leander, texas and the car accelerated at a high speed without touching the gas pedal. I responded with braking but it did not stop the crash in to the concrete pylon. The pylon is fine but my front end on the 2016 Subaru Forester is not. It will need extensive repair. I got a ride for myself and my groceries, notified my insurance company but unfortunately, I am only covered by liability insurance. I am very fortunate that no-one was hurt including myself. The car remains at the scene of the accident in parking slot ff592. I am aware that this is not an isolated incident for this make, model, and year of this vehicle.

30 Other Fuel System problem of the 2011 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 10/20/2023

My car randomly turns off when reducing speed. It caused an accident a few days ago. I have had multiple mechanics try to figure out the problem but the only thing that comes up on the diagnostic tool is it needed 1 coil replaced. They have all been replaced and still won't go away. The che k engine light is on. And the car uses about a quart or more of oil everytime I fill up but has no leaks. When I reduce speed the car in traffic, around corners or to stop it constantly turns itself off. Starting it it sometimes turns itself off if I don't give it some gas at the same time. It smells like burning oil constantly.

31 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 10/09/2023

Continuous leaking of oil even after Subaru tested and verified it's "normal. ".

32 Other Fuel System problem of the 2019 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 10/04/2023

This is a follow up from previous complaint 11525953 dated 6/8/2023. My Subaru Forester stalled again on 8/2 at an intersection after 15 minutes of driving, and then again on 10/4 at an intersection after 45 minutes of highway driving. There are no warning signals or any indication of engine problems. I replaced the air filter in June hoping that might solve the issue.

33 Other Fuel System problem of the 2020 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 09/23/2023

Unintentional acceleration. After making right turn, vehicle accelerated for approx 1/2 mile until crashing into wall. Several attempts at braking and trying to shift into neutral did nothing.

34 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 09/17/2023

This 2016 Subaru Forester pcv valve does not regulate the combustion system properly, this allows oil to enter this chamber. It causes loss of power and acceleration when driving. Hazardous driving conditions can cause accidents. Crankcase ventilation issues engine oil system issues.

35 Other Fuel System problem of the 2020 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 09/15/2023

Daughter was driving vehicle on the morning of September 15, 2023, when smoke came from under hood. Immediately pulled over and engine was engulfed in flames. Got out of vehicle and moved a safe distance away as glass started to break and fire department arrived on scene. Picked up vehicle on September 12, 2023, after having the thermal control valve replaced (warranty) but after doing research there are other components that also had to be replaced (fuel line, etc) as part of this repair. Noticed there have been other vehicles with recall due to thermal control valve just nothing on the Subaru Forester. Completely traumatized as the vehicle was gone in a little over 3 minutes. Have been in contact with Subaru but no resolution on what they believe caused the car to catch on fire. Did authorize them to get “black box” on September 29, 2023.
