1 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2016 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 03/17/2021

On two separate occasions, our car stalled while I was driving on a major highway at 60 - 70 mph. (2016 Subaru Forester) the first incident was on Friday, June 21, 2019 on PA route 283. The second incident occurred on Wednesday, March 17th, 2021. In both cases the car engine died without warning at speeds of between 60 - 70 mph. Needless to say, this was a life threatening situation. My fuel gauge indicated that I needed gas in the first incident but I estimated that the car had a little more than a gallon remaining. In the second incident, the car had about a quarter of a tank of gas. I contacted sabaru after the first incident but I'm not aware of any action that was taken. I also contacted them after the second incident but have not yet heard back yet. Bsed on my research, other owners of Subaru Foresters have had a similar experience. I'm surprised quite frankly that no deaths have been reported.

2 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2015 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 02/17/2021

Fuel gauge malfunctioning, it takes couple minutes before it goes up after full tank. Sometimes it's hard to crank after you turn the key. Vehicle was stationary sometimes it feels like it's going to stall scary. Also left side driver window malfunctioning, the auto down not working and when your press up the window goes up 2 inches at a time takes awhile to go up.

3 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2016 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 12/04/2020

I have had approximately 10 episodes where I have been driving and the vehicle seems like it's not getting any or very little gas even though there is plenty of gas in the gas tank . These episodes are intermittent and started last winter. The issue didn't occur over the summer but started again when it got cold. The last episode was about three weeks ago on the highway. I put my flashers on quickly and luckily avoided an accident . Unlike past episodes, the issue didn't resolve itself quickly, I had the gas pedal to the floor, but was only able to do a slow crawl. It finally allowed me to go again, but then another episode happened before I made it to my exit. The vehicle has been sluggish since then especially when it's cold, but another episode has not happened as of yet. I took it to the Subaru mechanics in cumberland, maryland last winter when the issues first started. I was told that it was bad gas, and was charged $95 for it. I have used different gas stations, and I'm sure it's not bad gas since the issue is continuing.

4 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2015 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 11/17/2020

On 3 separate occasions, my car has shutdown on the highway at speeds around 75-80 mph. They all happened during road trips while my car was between 1/8 and 1/4 tank. The car has a noticeable drop in power, which feels like the transmission disengages and applying more gas doesn't help. This is incredibly dangerous!!!! luckily I was in the middle of nowhere on all 3 locations so I was able to pull over without incident. The car will not start, until more gas is put in the car. It's not out of fuel though because I tracked how much gas is in the car and how much I filled up after towing. This only happens after driving for multiple hours. I can run the car to empty if I'm just driving around town. A recall needs to be issued for this issue. I can see there have been tons of complaints around this issue.

5 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2016 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 07/31/2020

Please recall the 2016 Subaru Forester for failure of the accelerator at high speeds. Our 21-year-old daughter, a nursing student, took her 2016 Forester into grayson Subaru in knoxville, TN for a recall service on rear coil springs, oil change and tire rotation. Within an hour of leaving the service department she was driving 70 mph on the interstate when her "low fuel" warning light came on. According to the Subaru, that means 2. 6 gallons of gas remain. Assuming 20 mpg, that means she could drive approximately 52 miles before running out of gas. Within a minute of the low fuel light coming on, the accelerator failed to work and all the warning lights came on the dash. While traveling at 70 mph on the interstate, she had to cross 3 lanes of traffic to pull over on the shoulder. Very shaken and crying, she called grayson Subaru and they sent a tow truck. After steve kachelrie of grayson's service department assessed the car, he concluded, "your daughter just ran out of gas. There is nothing we can do other than put gas in the tank. " when I told him that the gas meter said she had 50 miles of driving to go before empty, he dismissed it and repeated that she "just ran out of gas. " I researched the 2016 Subaru Forester on NHTSA. Gov and found 20 reports of identical incidents of the car showing 50-70 miles to go before empty and the accelerator completely failing at high speeds on the interstate and all warning lights lighting up. When I told grayson service that was an unacceptable response, they referred me to the owner of the dealership, walter grayson. He agreed to fulfill Subaru's guarantee to pay us the trade-in value of the car, $14,800. The dealership sent us a check for the 2016 Subaru Forester and we purchased a new Toyota.

6 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2015 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 07/25/2020

While driving on the highway at 65mph the car lost all power. The rpms went up like it was in neutral (car was still in drive). Fuel tank was down to a little less than 1/4th of a tank but still had 100 miles until empty. Adaptive cruise was engaged at the time (automated cruise applied accelerator that rose the rpms to 4500). This was in the middle of a 4 hour road trip on a flat straight road. Car exhibited no warning or lights until complete power was lost. I was able to safely pull over to the shoulder. All lights came on in the dash after I was stopped. I turned the car off and I was able to immediately start it again. Shortly after I filled up the tank and the car drove fine for the next hour until I was home. This was a scary incident that could be very dangerous. I noticed that this car has about a dozen other reports that are much like this in the past year.

7 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2014 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 02/22/2020

While driving on the freeway under excellent conditions, the engine 'revved' and then stalled. I was able to pull off onto the shoulder and put the car in "park" and turn off the engine. Before I did so, the insrument panel indicators were (almost?) all lit. I tried to restart = unsuccessful. After waiting about 5 minutes, I tried again and was able to proceed normally. This is the second time this has occured; previous episode about three months ago (unreported) under similar conditions. The only "common" element I can surmise is that the gas level was < 1/4 tank in both instances. I was not concerned about the gas as the gauge and "miles to empty" were more than sufficient to get me home. I did refuel within ten miles of the temporary breakdown and was able to drive without further incident.

8 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2015 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 12/22/2019

While driving on highway at 70mph, the vehicle suddenly lost power. The engine revved but no response, like it was in neutral. The engine did not completely shut off, and I was able to get over to the shoulder. While coasting on the shoulder, the car sputtered as if it was out of gas, but I had 1/4 tank. It then began to run normally. I pulled off to a gas station, filled it up, and continued my trip without a problem. The occurrence was very dangerous on a congested highway.

9 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2016 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 12/21/2019

While driving on the highway with cruise control on, 2016 Forester engine revved while also losing power and the lights on the dash lit up. I pulled over to the side of the highway with the car still running, I shut the car off. After a few minutes, the engine started fine but the car still had no power. Was towed to the shop and they stated the car ran out of gas. The car stated there were 30 miles left to drive and the gas light came on 18 miles prior (at 50 miles estimated left to drive) . The second time this happened, I ran out of gas with 50 miles left to drive and only 5 miles after the gas light came on. I haven't let the car get below 1/4 tank due to this issue. Something is not reading right with the fuel system. The manual says there should be roughly 2 gallons left in the car when the gas light comes on so I should be able to at least go 40 miles at the bare minimum.

10 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2019 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 10/19/2019

My son's new 2019 Subaru Forester touring burned to a crisp (total) on Saturday, 10/19 in I-95 near new rochelle, NY. Vehicle was in the left lane and the car in front stopped and they hit it, then they were hit in the back, too. Their car burned but the car in front and behind did not. The car in front was even able to move indicating nothing wrong with its gas tank.

11 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2015 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 05/24/2019

Twice while driving on the interstate on a 3-4 hour trip going approximately 70 mph using cruise control with approximately 1/12 - 1/6 tank of gas, my engine began to rev and at the same time lost power and speed. The first time I pulled off the road, shut the engine off, waited approximately 10 minutes and was able to restart the engine and finish my trip. It happened the second time with mostly identical circumstances. I pulled off the road, turned off the engine, waited and was unable to start the engine. I had to tow my vehicle to a dealership. They ran diagnostics with nothing turning up. They were however able to start the car when they tried. This was extremely dangerous being in 70 mph traffic and having no speed control. I have the dealership paperwork from the service. Now the engine does not seem to have the normal power it usually does when accelerating.

12 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2015 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 05/06/2019

Car was traveling at 75mph for 2 hours when going up and small grade incline. Engine started revving and car started slowing down very quickly. Was in traffic, so had to turn on hazard lights on, and get over to the shoulder. The vehicle felt as if though it was braking. The hill descent control light lit up, but no other lights. Car did not stall. I then turned it off, opened the hood and everything looked normal. Car was at normal operational temperature and had 1/4 tank if fuel left. Car was info for service within 500 miles at Subaru. After checking the engine, I started the car again and took off. 30 minutes later, the exact same issue occured.

13 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2016 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 12/05/2018

I have had very similar issues to the gentleman whose NHTSA # is 11161972. On three occasions when I was driving on the highway at approximately 70 miles an hour and usually going up and incline, my engine would sputter and the car would die. All three times my car screen showed that I had between 60 and 80 miles left in my tank and my fuel gauge which show two clicks to the right of empty. The first time I thought it could be due to the fact that I needed gas in my car . At that point I contacted aaa and they brought me 2 gallons of gas to get me to the next exit to so that I can fill my tank. The second time I had moved over to the emergency lane as my car was dying. I had waited about 10 minutes while I was waiting on aaa again to show up when I decided to start my car and the engine started. I was literally 2/10 of a mile from the gas station so I headed in that direction to fill my tank. The third time as I was inclining on a hill in the fast lane, the engine suddenly died as I was driving about 70 miles an hour. Fortunately I thought fast and hit the emergency flashers as I had a semi right behind my car. This time I moved over into the left side emergency lane and waited about 10 minutes and my car started again. This seems to always happen when the car is showing between 60 and 90 miles of gas left in my tank and always with two clicks on the full gage. I am not sure as to why this is happening and have taken it to my Subaru dealership and they are unaware of any problems yet we're unable to re-create the problem when they tried to drive it. As someone who puts a lot of road miles on their car for work, this is a little bit scary as my travels are on the highway and not always in large cities. One thing that I have noticed is that the VIN number on NHTSA ticket # 11161972 matches mine exactly based on what is shown on your site. All hwy driving.

14 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2015 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 11/22/2018

My 2015 Forester stalled while driving in the middle lane on the NJ parkway (going about 65-70mph. ) there were no warning lights or any indications that this would happen. I had about 3/4 of a tank of gas left. When the car stalled, it felt like it downshifted and then completely stopped - almost as if we ran out of gas (but we didn't). The electric (lights, radio, heat) was on the whole time. We were stalled for about 15-20 minutes until the cops came. We put the car in neutral and they bumped us to the shoulder. While waiting for a tow truck, we tried to start the car again and it worked (about 30 minutes after the initial stall. ) we then drove to the nearby gas station and filled up the car; it took 12 gallons of gas and I have the receipt. The Subaru service center cannot find the issue. They said the computer isn't even showing a stall code. This could have been a fatal accident and I want to know exactly what is wrong and know it is fixed before I drive it again. It looks like other owners have had the similar issues.

15 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2015 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 06/07/2018

On 6/7/18 after six hours behind the wheel, while traveling 78mph on cruise control my vehicle suddenly lost all systems, as if it had run out of gas, on interstate 85 in heavy traffic. Miraculously getting onto the right shoulder from center lane I sat for 10-20 minutes in shock. Thinking I had run out of gas even though no low fuel indicators had shown up I turned the key to see if the instrument panel would turn on. It did, a quarter tank of gas showed on gauge. I turned the ignition key and the engine started. I saw a sign for exit in 2 miles, put on hazards, went 50 mph to exit, straight to gas station. 9 gallons went in proving the gauge to be correct. I stopped for the night and googled what had happened and found many hits indicating a possible fuel system problem. I was still 5 hours from home so called nearest Subaru repair shop, they couldn't fit me in for a week. Took back roads home, never going over 50 mph. Called Subaru dealership where I bought my car and they had a two week wait for service. Called Subaru of America who intervened and local dealer got me in that day. 6/11/18. That dealership could not find anything on the computer and said it had been wiped clean by someone. Regardless, I asked if they would look at fuel system but they would not, instead offering to purchase the vehicle for fair market price and sell it on their used car lot to a new unsuspecting customer. Took vehicle to another Subaru dealer who did pull the fuel system and found fuel transfer pump faulty. This caused my car to think it was out of gas as I traveled. I asked Subaru of na if they had seen this problem and they replied "there are no recalls for your vehicle", I know from my google search this is not an isolated event for my vehicle. In fact when I picked up my car the mechanic said he had another Subaru come in the next day with same problem.

16 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 12/20/2017

Have gas smell which I cannot find that is ongoing. 18 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2010 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 01/08/2017

The fuel tank door jams and refuses to open. This has been happening for about 5 months. I had to ask a gas station attendant to open it and he had to use a screwdriver. Took car to dealer on may 3rd. Did not fix it. I read online this has happened to many others. I called Subaru customer service number and she said that she never heard of this happening. . I believe they should have a recall .

19 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 12/07/2016

The contact owns a 2004 Subaru Forester. When the vehicle was started, a very strong fuel odor emerged from the engine compartment. The fuel tank leaked fuel onto the manifold. The failure was diagnosed by an independent mechanic as a fuel tank leak. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 149,966.

20 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2009 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 11/08/2016

Gas tank corroded and is leaking gasoline. Car has not been driven off road, is regularly washed and stored in a garage when not in use. Car is 9 years old and has 105,000 miles on it. Although out of warranty, seriousness of leaking gasoline warrants a look at these tanks, are they properly "rust proofed"? tank hands down under car, rear seat area and is exposed to road salts, water and mud.

21 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2007 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 10/13/2015

Dear sir, I recently purchased this Subaru Forester car (jf1sg656x7h706060) in georgia, but had noticed that before allowing it to be sold at auction, the manchester center, vt/motor vehicle department vermont didn't ensured this vehicle had passed all the recalls requested by your Subaru company for this model of Forester (I see at least one open recall no. Wvu31 reprogram ecm now which was not passed). Beside, according to carfax and autocheck reports, it seems the car din not went through 2010 recall (wvn24: engine control module (ecm) reprogramming & fuel tank one-way fuel valve). I presume because of this, the error code p1400 appears currently on the car display. Therefore, I would like asking your assistance in identifying which entity is bearing responsibility for these 2 problems? I asked also Subaru inc. To allow servicing my car free of charge for inspection and removal of errors to the closest Subaru dealer, but not reply yet. How is possible that the car was allowed by vermont motors department to be sold outside of USA, even if recalls were active? as a citizen of eu member state, I reserve the right to start a case for allowing selling outside of USA a car being under Subaru recalls. I mean Subaru recalls no. Wvn24 and wvu31, the last even has not been reported neither to carfax, nor to autocheck, which reports I purchased before. Hope you'll offer me entire assistance. Thank you for consideration. Ph. D. Radu gorincioi.

22 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 1998 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 09/24/2015

When at the gas stations I try to put gas into my car, it is not going into the tank properly, it keeps shutting the gas nozzle off within seconds. Very hard to put gas into my car.

23 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2015 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 08/07/2015

While driving eastbound on I-80 in iowa just east of exit 220 (williamsburg) our car lost power but, because it has a manual transmission, I was able to depress the clutch and coast to the left road margin. The low fuel indicator had come on a few miles before but the display indicator showed that we had sufficient fuel to drive 60 miles at the displayed average of 30. 5 miles per gallon. This should have been correct as the manual states that when the low fuel indicator comes there are 2. 6 gallons remaining. I tried to restart the car as the indicator continued to show one increment in the gas gauge and a range of 60 miles on the display. After several attempts it was apparent that the engine was not getting fuel. We eventually were assisted by an iowa state patrol officer who took me back to the casey's station in williamsburg where I bought a gasoline can and about 3. 5 gallons of fuel. With his assistance I was able to fuel my car (the traffic at that time and place was very heavy and fast), and the car started immediately. It is be important to note that the low fuel indicator did not come on after I started the car. I had not put all of the gas in the can into my car, and the manual states that the indicator will not come on when the tank is holding 4. 5 gallons of fuel, so there was clearly a gallon or more of fuel in the tank when it died. Also, that section of eastbound I-80 is slightly uphill. It seems then that either the electronics associated with the reading fuel levels are very inaccurate, or the gas tank is built in such a way that when the tank is lower on fuel and going uphill gas is not getting to the engine. Had I not been driving a manual transmission and able to roll onto the margin uphill but simply slowed to a sudden stop in that traffic when the engine died, I believe it would have caused a very serious series if collisions.

24 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 06/07/2013

It was summer when I first notice the smell of fuel through my vents and I was driving pass an gas station (shell) so I didn't think much not till the next morning as I warmed up the car I smelled pure gasoline next to the passenger fender I then pop the hood and traced it and I was lead to the turbo side of the engine seems to be coming from the fuel rail area unsure as the engine warmed up the smell faded away but now it's winter and it's bad I can see a big lost in fuel consumption full tank doesn't last a week it's driven to and from work around 4 to 12 miles a day need help!.

25 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2007 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 10/01/2012

Took car in for routine recall items (campaign wvu-31 and campaign wvl-22). During one way fuel valve removal, strong smell of gas was noted coming from gas tank area. Evaporative leak was noted due to cracked fuel cut valves. Cost of removal and replacement of both left and right cracked fuel valves was $693. 59. The service advisor was very nice and explained everything in advance of the repair (I am very satisfied with his approach to this problem). This matter should be considered by Subaru as a recall (campaign) matter and should be covered by Subaru.

26 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2003 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 11/08/2010

The contact owns a 2003 Subaru Forester. The contact stated that when the fuel tank was full, the vehicle would emit an overpowering gasoline odor into the interior cabin. The vap valve was replaced by the dealer but did not correct the problem. The contact verified that there was not a fuel leak present. The vehicle was not further repaired. The failure mileage was 90,000 and the current mileage was 113,000.

27 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 1998 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 06/01/1998

1. Wheel bearings have consistently needed replacement starting 4 years after car purchased new. At 450. 00 to 500. 00 each time. This is a design issues and Subaru needs to pay of each replacement. 2. Fuel line leak. This is very dangerous and again listed many many time on all Subaru fix web sites. Cost to fix 1600. 00 and more if fuel tank needs replacing. Again, Subaru needs to deal with this. These have been happening since car purchased. Car has been well maintained since purchase.
