36 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2023 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 05/10/2023

Pulling into our home driveway at a slow rate of speed, the auto emergency braking engaged for no reason and came to an abrupt stop. This system now has be concerned that it will engage at random times while driving and potentially cause an accident. We are taking the car to the dealer for inspection.

37 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2023 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 05/05/2023

While driving at a high rate of speed on a remote road, using cruise control, my vehicle suddenly braked/decelerated for no reason. Could have been the automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, or forward collision warning. The first time it happened, a warning bell sounded, red lights flashed, and the vehicle decelerated very rapidly. It happened again about 6 weeks later, but the second time there was no audio or visual warning, the vehicle just decelerated rapidly. If there had been a vehicle behind my vehicle I might have been rear-ended because there was nothing on the road in front of me to warrant rapid deceleration. Also, on both occasions, the deceleration was swift enough to cause items in the vehicle to dislodge.

38 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2023 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/26/2023

Automatic emergency braking applied violently and unnecessarily when pulling into a parking space on two separate instances in the last week. I was pulling into the parking space this morning as normal. I was applying the brakes, and just before stopping, my car stabbed the brakes. It felt like a car crash, but my car was 3ft from hitting the other car. Immediately after, a message appeared indicating that automatic emergency braking was applied. The same thing happened to my wife last week. In both instances, we both got headaches from the jarring stop. We are taking the car to the dealership tomorrow.

39 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/25/2023

Pulled into a parking space at the village green strip mall, applied brakes and immediately, the engine accelerated and lunged my vehicle into another car that was parked in the parking space in front of my car. When the car accelerated, the brakes did not work. I reversed the car since it continued to accelerate into the parked car in front of me and the car went back as fast as it was accelerating forward. I put the car into drive since I had parked cars behind me as well. The car accelerated forward at a very high rate, I did not have brakes, I guided the car between parked cars as best I could but could not make a left turn and the car drove into a brick building in the strip mall. I opened a claim with Subaru corp, case #230508-190-1112.

40 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2023 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/14/2023

I purchased the vehicle about a month ago and almost on a daily basis the precollision breaking system would cause the car to break when there was nothing there. It has picked up parked cars on the side of the road as well as breaked for no apparent reason. I have been almost rear ended a number of times. The precollision breaking system takes several steps to turn off and needs to be turned off every time the car is started. I spoke to the dealership and brought the car in to be looked at. I thought maybe the cameras were too sensitive. I requested for the precollision breaking system to be disconnected since I felt like it was a safety concern. They were unable to reduce the sensitivity or disable the system. They said they could disable it but in doing so I would lose several other features on the car. They could not tell me which ones.

41 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2021 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/13/2023

Car experienced unintended acceleration and the pre-collision safety system failed to engage. Car accelerated into a building and the driver stopped car's attempt to continue forward progress by taking the car out of drive mode. The pre-collision system failed completely. The electronic control units seemed to fail entirely. This happened while pulling into a parking space at a very low rate to speed (until the car "took off").

42 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/19/2023

I was pulling into a space in a parking deck, foot on brake. Just as I was shifting into park, the car lunged forward and slammed into the guard rail. Popped the fender and did some paint damage. Thankfully no one was hurt, but frightening to think that this could have happened in an intersection.

43 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2023 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/31/2022

The contact owns a 2023 Subaru Outback. The contact stated while driving 65 mph with the cruise control activated, the vehicle made a sudden stop without warning. The contact stated that several minutes later the vehicle operated normally. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 800.

44 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/29/2022

The entire electronics system resets while driving, all driving metrics, speed, eye-sight/collision detection shows reboot screen, and infotainment system goes blank for several seconds. It would appear that none of this vehicles safety systems or speed indicators are online for several seconds up to 20 at times. I have tried to catch this on camera, but since I am the sole driver of this vehicle, I am rarely in a position to safely operate my phone. It has been going on since I purchased the vehicle, but I am seeing more and more posts with other drivers and the same issue.

45 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/15/2022

About 8 months ago I was turning into a space in the parking lot of a large store (kohls) the car lunged forward on it's own when I took my foot off the accelerator. I was able to stop the car with the brake pedal before ramming a lamp post. I did not report it to a dealership. Nothing like it has happened in the 8 months/3000 miles of driving since. It took me completely by surprise without any indication of system failure.

46 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/09/2022

On a reoccurring basis, my Subaru will randomly slam on the breaks, detecting an object that isn't there. Dealership has done nothing, and Subaru of America has ignored my complaints.

47 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 09/28/2022

On multiple occasions my car has braked on its own when there was no reason to. It has happened on at least four (4) different times and has been taken to Subaru of kennesaw to be looked at. Unfortunately the dealership has been unable to duplicate the problem. When I took my car back to the dealership on September 28, 2022 for this I contacted Subaru of America and they had an engineer, kevin triplett come and get the data off the event data recorder in the vehicle. The engineer verbally said they have pictures from each time my car braked on its own and advised there was nothing in front of me. He said it is an eyesight issue but they cannot adjust the eyesight and they cannot fix the problem. The car just brakes without warning the engineer said this can happen if the eyesight sees a mailbox, cars to the right or left of me, trees, curbs and even a change in color in the roadway. This has continued to happen and now Subaru of America will not take my calls nor will they respond to my emails. I have asked for a copy of the pictures, a letter stating their findings and a letter stating my car is safe to drive but they will not issue this to me. This has been going on since April 2022. I am afraid I am going to be in accident one day when the car brakes on its own if someone is behind me and not paying attention.

50 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/01/2022

-the windshield has cracked in the same place for no apparent reason. -the cracked windshield can affect the use of the safety systems built into the windshield. -I'm not sure how this can be "reproduced" as we are talking about a broken windshield although the windshield has been fixed already once and now, the second break has occurred. -not inspected but replaced once. It is currently broken and can be inspected again if need be. -the first one appeared in August 2022, the second in may 2023.

51 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/29/2022

Front windshield without warning had a stress crack appear on the passenger side from the top of the windshield to the middle. No foreign item caused the damage. Again, the crack appeared without warning. My insurance company set up appointment with safe lite auto glass to replace the cracked windshield on August 2, 2022. The crack has now extended diagonally across the windshield as of Sunday July 31,2022. Because of the safety risk involved, I felt it was imperative to have it replaced ASAP. Plans are to reach out to the dealership on Monday August 1,2022 for their inspection and assessment.

52 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/27/2022

Vehicle navigation system crashes with a black screen once or twice a day. While the system is rebooting, navigation, eyesight and reverse automatic braking are disabled. Needless to say, this is very distracting and especially bad since eyesight is required to avoid a collision. This has happened multiple times over the 11 months that I've owned the vehicle.

53 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/09/2022

Main wiring harness / main electrical system malfunction, causing all dash lights to consistently be on. Which in turn prevents all of the adas functions to no longer work. Vehicle has now been in 2 accidents which could have been prevented by these safety features. Vehicle had had main harness replaced at dealers cost at dealership , and one at cost of insurance, problem remains unfixed/unfixable. Vehicle is specifically 2022 Subaru Outback onxy xt.

54 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/05/2022

Battery spontaneously drains, disengaging all safety features with no warning.

55 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/01/2022

In 3 months of owning this vehicle, the auto emergency braking (aeb) system has spontaneously triggered with no cause at least a handful of times (multiple incidents). I am driving with no danger or risk of collision and the vehicle will slam on the brakes and make horrible noises. Not only is this incredibly frustrating, but in an urban driving environment, it is incredibly dangerous.

56 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/21/2022

I was driving in a residential neighborhood at low speed, about 20 mph. I slowed down because I needed to park at the curb, and also I was approaching a large speed bump. This was one of the wide, flat ones. I pulled over to the right curb a couple of car lengths before the speed bump, preparing to park. I went over the bump, accelerating a tiny bit to get over the bump. I was going maybe 10 miles an hour. As I came down off the bump, or shortly after that, the accelerator pedal moved down away from my foot. I felt the pedal move down and away so that my foot was no longer touching it. At the same time, the engine speed surged (I heard it rev), and the car lurched forward for a second or two. I put my foot on the brake and also saw the obstacle detection on the instrument panel and saw the red lights and heard the beeping, and the car stopped moving. I don’t know whether I braked first or the car did. I was still about 2 car lengths away from a parked car in front of me when my vehicle stopped. I took my vehicle to a dealership the next day. They performed diagnostics but were unable to find anything wrong with it.

57 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/11/2022

The vehicle, a 2018 Subaru Outback limited 3. 6r, was being pulled into the garage at the owner’s home. With brakes applied, and while putting vehicle into park, the vehicle suddenly accelerated forward making contact with a suspended shelf attached to the back wall of the garage. The force of the vehicle was such that the shelf and back wall of the garage were completely separated from the home in one piece and pushed approximately 10 yards away from the home before the shelf broke away from the wall upon impact with the ground, perpendicular to the back of the house. The vehicle then traveled down two hills in the back yard, across a water saturated easement, over a concrete drainage culvert and came to rest at the base of an incline in an adjacent yard approximately 150 ft from the garage. Air bags did not deploy and the owner suffered minor contusions causing pain and stiffness, but no significant injuries are noted as of this report. The vehicle was totaled and significant damage was caused to the residence. No collision warnings were displayed prior to collision and emergency braking did not apply upon acceleration. This was the first incidence of sudden acceleration experienced by the owner so this issue has never been checked out by a service technician and will not be repaired. The vehicle had less than 8000 miles on the odometer. The vehicle is currently located in a repair lot and the owner’s insurance company has been requested to hold the vehicle for inspection prior to disposal. The cause of the sudden acceleration is unknown, but the owner is confident that the brakes were being applied at the time of occurrence, and that they remained cognizant throughout the incident as they were unable to stop the forward progression of the vehicle until it came to rest on the muddy incline.

58 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2021 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/27/2022

*eyesight system detects collision hazard and applies brakes when entering certain curves. *unexpected braking in curve, particularly when roadway is wet poses a danger to driver and other motorists. Reproduced by dealer or service center, problem is captured on dashcam video. *vehicle has been inspected by dealer *eyesight system seems to "glitch" frequently, causing a variety of warning lamps on dashboard, full shutdown of infotainment system, and disabling all built in eyesight safety features.

59 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/15/2022

I was backing out of my driveway very slowly as usual. I checked the road both ways several times. A us mail truck evidently traveling at a high rate of speed came up behind me while I was looking in the opposite direction. The automatic braking did not kick in, the warning system didn't work. After the accident the green, yellow, red lines on the camera and the warning beeping stuff-all were not working for several weeks. All of the sudden, they started working. History-4 days after purchasing the vehicle we have had lane departure, driver assist problems. The passenger window does what it wants. The electric controls for the heat/ac go blank, or can't change settings. There seems to be a huge electrical issue. Every time we've taken the car in for service, the dealership just insults me that I can't drive and they can't find any problems. They seem to have an answer for everything yet the problems persist. Efforts to go thru Subaru are stalled waiting on their response. They were to look at the black box during time of accident. We are still waiting. We are frustrated. I wish the dealership had taken the car back after we first bought it like we demanded. I'm terrified this car is going to cause an accident.

60 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2019 Subaru Outback

61 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2022 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/10/2022

I have videos. I have been having major issues with a lot of aspects of the car. However, the most concerning is the obstacle detection going off randomly when there is nothing in front of the car, and the other major issue is that the lane assist feature keeps pulling the car out of the lane I am in. Randomly throughout a cruise control drive, the car will pull towards an inner lane. I fight with the car to keep it in the correct lane. If I relax my grip even slightly, the car pulls me into the other lanes of traffic. I am finding that it is most determined to pull me out of my lane when there are cars in the lane next to the one I’m driving. In other words, it never tries to pull me off the road. It always tries to pull me into other lanes of traffic. I’ve been driving the car for 6 months. It’s been doing this since the first month.

62 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2021 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/07/2022

The Subaru eyesight system malfunctioned while I was driving. All eyesight components were enabled at the time of the incident, including pre collision braking and forward collision warning. I had been stopped at a red light at a four way intersection. I was the first car waiting at the red light, with other cars behind me and to each side. The intersection had multiple lanes in each direction. There were four lanes going the direction I was driving, and I was in the second from the right. When the traffic light turned green, I took my foot off the brake and onto the gas to begin accelerating. I accelerated through the large intersection reaching approximately 20 miles per hour. The speed limit is 25 or 30 there so I was continuing to accelerate to that speed and was just about through the intersection when the pre collision braking suddenly engaged with no warning at all. My foot was still on the gas trying to accelerate when this happened. All of the lights that show on the windshield seemed to light up red, and it showed that the pre collision braking had engaged on the dashboard screen behind the steering wheel. The car came to an immediate stop in the middle of the road and would not move forward. I took my foot off the gas and my car would still not move. My dashboard said something along the lines of “firmly press brake to hold stop. ” I hit the brake, then everything returned to normal and I could move forward. I moved forward, safely switched to the right lane and pulled into the nearest driveway to get off the road and park. I then disabled all eyesight features and called my Subaru dealership who said they will “diagnose and recalibrate” the system on 1/14/2022. My car and windshield were clean and my windshield is the same from the factory with no defects. No cars were in front of my- the road ahead was wide open, clear, flat, and straight. No one turned in front of me or anything. Fortunately I was not rear ended but it was very scary and dangerous.

63 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/01/2022

Infotainment system went into a continuous boot loop where screen went blank then Subaru bootup screen appeared, then menu started to load then process repeated. During this process the eyesight driver assistance system would produce an error saying all of it's functions were disabled while the infotainment system was rebooting. Also the display in center of the dashboard that shows vehicle info was randomly showing scrambled text while the infotainment system rebooted. This has happened multiple times, appears to happen when the vehicle has been on for several hours and is warm so it is hard to reproduce.

64 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/16/2021

Wife was in a collison on the freeway in phoenix. She believes none of the collision avoidance devices worked properly to help prevent the accident. She heard no alarms or dings associated with the avoidance systems on her Outback. She didn't feel the brakes lock up like they normally would. She feels if this truly is an issue, can she trust any of these safety features, which if working, could help avoid hitting everything from a person to a vehicle and injuring or killing her or someone else. We have not tried to reproduce this issue since the car is damaged and out our house. We have also not taken it to a dealer for the same reason. We did call Subaru and all they cared about was being sued. Which we said we did not want. We just wanted to make sure all systems are working or if there is an issue. They would not help or even offer to inspect the car. They told us we need to hire a 3rd party investigator. Which we don't even know who or where that would be or how to find one. No known issues with the system prior to the accident.

65 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2021 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/12/2021

Several times, at random, the infotainment system goes blank. Screen goes black and can not adjust any of the adas controls! after 10 to 20 seconds the system seems to reboot and slowly returns to normal operations.

66 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/20/2021

The automatic emergency braking system engaged while driving at 20 mph in my community's private roads. After it came to a screeching halt, I had to put the car in park and then in drive so I could proceed the half mile to my house. If this had happened while driving @ 70 mph on I 95, I am confident there would have been an accident. I am now afraid to drive my car. I wonder if and when it is going to happen again unexpectedly. Very dangerous situation.

67 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 09/30/2021

The emergency brake light and traction symbol have started flashing when I’m driving and now the eb has stopped working. I’ve visiting the Subaru dealership twice and two other mechanics. They’ve all told me different reasons why my car is doing this. I’ve never had an emergency break stop working.

68 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2021 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/26/2021

On 3 occasions the eyesight automatic braking activated with no apparent reason. The first was at highway speeds, second at 45mph and the third at about 30/35mph. In the first case a car entered the lane but there was considerable distance. In the second a car made a right turn into my lane and was slow but there was about 1/4 mile or more space and the last one occurred as, my wife, followed the curve of the road to the right. There were no vehicles near by only a median. In each case there was no gradual slow down only a full force application of the brakes. This led to the car lunging forward. Fortunately in all cases there was no one behind us or we would have been rear ended. The associated red heads-up lights activated at the very same time as the brakes did. I have called the dealer for an appointment to bring it in. No one else has inspected the vehicle.

69 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/20/2021

Without warning or repeatable cause the "infotainment" system will reboot causing the bluetooth, lkas, forward watching camera, emergency braking, and rab to also stop working and reboot. This problem has occurred numerous times over the past several months. It happens without any predictability and I have not been able to find a common factor that triggers it. In may it happened once on a 4 hour drive west, but on the return trip it happened 4 times in a 2 hour window. The problem did not occur again until the first week of June and happened multiple times over a 3 day period. The software for the car has been recalled and reinstalled twice and the problem still occurs without warning or explanation. I have reported the issue in mid-August to Subaru's customer service and was told "a software update" was 2 weeks away. I do not believe this report from their customer service because no other documentation was provided other than a call back. I followed-up with a call back and an email to Subaru asking for more details for which I have not gotten an answer. The incidence of it happening on Aug 20, 2021 occurred as I was entering into traffic from baggage road to hwy 220 south in rockingham county, nc. The system rebooted as I was entering traffic and created a distraction at a crucial moment I was crossing 4 lanes to turn left to proceed south on hwy 220. Presently the system's issues seem to be limited to a reboot of bluetooth, radio and all safety related systems. If the system had triggered a shutdown of the car or if the safety systems had caused the car to stop I would have been in the middle of a us highway with traffic approaching from both directions at 60+mph. I am disappointed by Subaru for not addressing this issue with a formal company statement and promises of an update have not materialized.

70 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2019 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/24/2021

On June 20th my front windshield began spontaneously cracking while sitting in driveway. A day later while driving on the interstate, the rearview mirror fell off windshield. Since the rearview mirror is essential for several electronic safety mechanisms to function properly, this means they were disabled and/or malfunctioning as well. After having the windshield replaced, the same thing happened about a month later (July 24, 2021) so now I have to replace it again. In both cases, the Subaru service manager determined that there was no chipping or other external damage to the windshield. Looking at customer forums & complaints, this appears to be a defective windshield problem that Subaru is attempting to cover up. It has been going on since at least the 2015 model year. Please help.
