5 Car Stall problem of the 2009 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/15/2021

The car intermittently bucks/chugs while driving and then stalls. All the lights flash on. It is difficult to restart. It has happened on the highway and local streets. It also idles very rough when at stops or in park and shudders like it wants to stall - sometimes it does. This has been going on for 2 months now. The first time, I was stopped at a red light and it stalled creating a hazardous situation. My mechanic has attempted to fix it and then he has taken it to the local Subaru dealership where it has spent almost 2 months off & on while they "fixed" it. They give it back and it is back to them within a week with the same issue. The last time they replaced a map sensor and some wiring. This is hazardous and the vehicle is unsafe. It feels like they just keep clearing out the error and giving it back to me.

6 Car Stall problem of the 2009 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/15/2021

Previously submitted complaint regarding my Subaru Outback stalling. I was assigned complaint number 11414502 (attached) but when I didn't receive the email, I checked and it didn't pull up so I'm resubmitting.

7 Car Stall problem of the 2016 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/12/2021

2. 12 February 2021, vehicle milage approaching 42,000. Traveling from mazama wa to seattle via wa hwy 20, us 97 and I-90, traveled +/- 200 miles. Temperature ranges from 10f to 20f. Traveling west on I-90 +/-50 mph, lanes clear, snow in between lanes. New michelin tires on all 4 wheels. Holding the speed constant following 18-wheel rig. Subaru started wobbling as if one of the tires was going flat. Tried accelerating and slowing to determine if this was front or back tire. Determined it must be a rear tire. No low-pressure indication on the instrument gages (I have had tire warning during summer driving and found a nail in tire). Next off ramp checked all 4 tires, all appeared to be the same in appearance. Resumed travel. During acceleration and DE-accelerating no differential sway. When constant speed maintained around 50 mph swaying occurred un to we reached the west side of snoqualmie pass and the temperature was into the 30s. Last year when having vehicle serviced, I told the service check-in person & a supervisor the car was stalling out when hard acceleration during merging left into highway where speed limit was 50 mph. The car stalled and I kicked the accelerator. Luckily, the car responded the supervisors response was there's no way this can happen.

8 Car Stall problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/31/2020

I believe all of the following circumstances to be caused by an electrical problem: Dec. 31, 2020: car hesitates to start. It never turns over so it does not ever start. We install new battery & car starts. Mid-Jan. 2021: car won't start from push start, but does start when I use my remote start key fob. After that, car starts with push start. Feb. -April 2021: car has a several times when it hestitates to start, but ultimately it does start. May 1-3 2021: car hesitates to start, but ultimately starts. May 4-5 2021: car not only hesitates to start, but now I have all kinds of lights lit up on my dash, including check engine, eyesight, x-mode light is flashing, and several others that I cannot get to turn off. In all instances, vehicle was stationary and turned off. I have photos & video but can't seem to reduce file size to required 5mb. Side note: unless I am at work or running errands, my car is always in the garage.

9 Car Stall problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/10/2020

Wife reported car stalled when making a turn after stopping. While turning she said it felt like the car was not getting any gas and had no power. She let the vehicle roll to a stop on the side of the road. She said it took several attempts for the car to start back up. This happened 3 times today during a trip to the dentist in the city of lynchburg, virginia. I called terry Subaru of lynchburg when she got home and reported the problem. They told me to bring it in tomorrow to have it checked out.

10 Car Stall problem of the 2012 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/01/2020

The vehicle stalls completely upon slowing down. This occurs frequently at stop signs, lights and while crossing a major road and waiting halfway across to join the flow of traffic. Subaru dealer says it is a defective torque converter but no longer covered by the cvt warranty extension. This is extremely dangerous and should be fixed at no cost to vehicle owner.

11 Car Stall problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/26/2020

When stopping the car stalls and dies on streets, highways, etc. I have almost been rear ended and it even died while obstructing oncoming traffic. Subaru issued a technical services bulletin (TSB 16-90-13r) which describes the issue perfectly, however due to milage (40k over 100k) they will not correct the bad part, which is no longer even availaable to purchase through them! part # 31100ab170. The new part 31100ab171 and 31100ab172 should be issued to all 2010-2012 Outback owners as a recall. If they will not even sell the original part anymore because they know it is garbage and then play the feel good best car ever commercials, that is misleading and fraudulent. Help NHTSA, you are our only hope.

12 Car Stall problem of the 2015 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/05/2020

Vehicle will not start/crank. Battery is brand new, all electronics function and light up, yet when ignition is turned the engine doesn't turn over. Vehicle is in the shop for the third time in 3 weeks. A new wiring harness was installed but failed to resolve the issue. Vehicle has been showing codes for the cam & crank sensors, including code p0340, yet all sensors have tested as operational. I'll post an update as soon as I hear from dealer.

13 Car Stall problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 09/09/2020

My 2020 Subaru Outback is equipped with the ?auto-start-stop ?feature. From the beginning this feature would routinely not function, displaying the icon indicating auto start stop was disengaged. When attempting to utilize this feature I learn two more deliberately hold down firmly on the brake pedal and I could engage this feature at times. Nine times out of 10 the auto start stop feature does not engage when I stop in drive with my foot on the break at a traffic light or at a stop sign. Very often, the feature turns off my engine and immediately restarts with a rumbling of the engine and an abrupt ?kick? to the steering wheel. Even when the feature engages and shuts off the engine as expected, the duration of stop mode is a limited to no more than 20 seconds which defeats the original intended purpose of fuel consumption and emissions reduction. Occasionally at a traffic light, such as when waiting to make a left in front of oncoming traffic, the feature does not engage at first stop and after inching forward and ready to make the turn this feature well abruptly stall the engine and strand me momentarily in front of oncoming traffic.

14 Car Stall problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/29/2020

Was driving Subaru Outback, came to a red light and car stopped as it's designed to do. When light turned green, car stalled and never started again leaving me on a 3 lane highway called route 19 in hudson florida.

15 Car Stall problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/25/2020

Tl the contact owns a 2020 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that while driving 45 mph exiting the highway, the vehicle started to shake then stalled. The check engine, oil and battery warning lights illuminated. The contact put the vehicle in park quickly. The contact was in the middle lane with no shoulder. The contact waited thirty seconds to restart the vehicle. The started to shake again. The vehicle was unable to restart. The tow truck operator attempted to restart the vehicle but was unable to. The vehicle was towed to reynolds' Subaru (268 hamburg rd, lyme, CT 06371) however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle remained at the dealer. The contact mentioned that the dealer informed her that national Subaru informed them to return the vehicle because they were unable to duplicate the failure. The contact mentioned that she dis not want to drive the vehicle because she transported her grandchildren in the vehicle. The contact also mentioned that the vehicle remained at the dealer for two weeks and a day still unrepaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case number was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 10,950.

17 Car Stall problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/04/2020

Im appalled that the torque converter has not been considered a recall considering all the complaints filed on it. I was quoted $1900 to have this replaced ! this is absurd and I can not afford this repair and believe Subaru should be responsible considering the amount of complaints on this. Now I risk accident everytime need to go out . Car stalls when coming to a stop .

18 Car Stall problem of the 2012 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/03/2020

Vehicle shudders and stalls when braking hard. It will not stall on a gradual stop but will stall in any situation when stopping quickly. Does not have to be a panic stop to stall, just hard braking. Resulting stall means loss of power brakes and steering. Have to shift into park and restart vehicle. Has no issues when running or driving. Engine runs vey smooth and has been well maintained as I am the original owner. It is an ongoing issue and repeatable in every circumstance. No computer codes set for this issue. Yet it happens every time there is hard braking which is every time it is driven. This is very dangerous and I am afraid to have my wife and son drive it much less myself.

19 Car Stall problem of the 2012 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/30/2020

When I be driving, and approaching an intersection, or a stop. My car stalls out. This happens more often, when a do a quick stop. I began, noticing this condition about a few months ago,,approximately January 2020.

20 Car Stall problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/21/2020

The cvt transmission is defective and extremely dangerous. The vehicle will suddenly stall when decelerating quickly. There is high potential to cause an accident. The manufacturer knows of the issue but will wait for the defect to occur rather than fixing the transmission.

21 Car Stall problem of the 2009 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/19/2020

2009 Subaru Outback stalling while driving. The engine turned off while driving with light acceleration at low speeds (5-20 mph) without warning. Warning lights flickered on and off. I was able to restart the car. This is a huge safety issue to have the car stall out without warning. Subara south blvd dealership say they do not know the root cause. Prior to the above incidence the car, while driving at low speeds, would occasionally shudder and the warning lights would flicker on then go off. It felt like the car was going to shut off but it didn't. Now it is shutting off. It's completely unsafe.

22 Car Stall problem of the 2013 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/11/2020

Date of event: 01/11/2020 time of event: 14:00 while attempting to merge onto interstate 84 our 2013 Subaru Outback chugged then completely stalled, requiring an emergency lane shift onto the shoulder to avoid entering the busy freeway with no engine power. Luckily the car started up again (albeit very roughly) and we were able to limp it to the next exit to a location to be towed. This was a very intense and scary situation that thankfully ended in no incident. Upon researching the problem it appears this stalling issue is not uncommon yet Subaru does nothing to correct it. This was a near miss that I attribute to a recall that should have already occurred voluntarily by the oem.

23 Car Stall problem of the 2012 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/01/2020

Vehicle shakes and shutters when braking at higher speeds before coming to a stop. Stalls out often when approaching stop signs and red lights.

24 Car Stall problem of the 2013 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/15/2019

The car looses power to the point where it occasionally stalls when I decelerate and come to a stop or just before the stop. I replaced the battery as it was on its way out anyway and the problem persists. I don't think it has anything to do with the alternator and I haven't brought the car to a dealer or mechanic yet. But want to raise the flag on the issue I'm having because I've seen lots of forums where other folks are experiencing a similar issue.

25 Car Stall problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/18/2019

The car engine cuts off when suddenly decelerating. My wife and child stalled twice already in traffic, once at a busy intersection. Also water leaks into the center brake light. Parking brake does not work.

26 Car Stall problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/09/2019

Around 130,000 miles car began to have problems with shuddering - will sometimes shudder and stall when coming to a stop. Very dangerous at intersections when slowing down to turn and in traffic. Concerned that this could result in an accident- being hit or stalling in the path of oncoming traffic. In researching on the internet it appears that Subaru Outbacks from 2010-2015 are experiencing this and there have been no recalls nor any warranties to cover repairs. Repairs to torque converter clutch - which is indicated by my dealership can run upwards of $1500.

27 Car Stall problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/05/2019

Major safety issue - vehicle has started stalling when coming to a stop or starting to turn. This has almost caused several accidents turning out onto the highway. Subaru issued a recall, but my car is not covered due to mileage, which is problematic.

28 Car Stall problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/26/2019

Car stalls out when I come to a complete stop, especially if I have to stop short due to being cut off. Car is an automatic, so this is not supposed to happen and is very dangerous when cars are coming behind me. I took it back to the dealer 3 times over the years and each time they said they could not replicate the problem and thus no diagnosis. After reading online, it seems to be a known problem to Subaru with a faulty torque converter.

29 Car Stall problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/10/2019

Major safety issue - vehicle has started stalling when coming to a stop or slowing down while starting to turn. This has almost caused several accidents for my wife turning out onto the highway. I was told by a Subaru mechanic that Subaru issued a recall, but I can't find it. This has been going on for about 2 months now.

30 Car Stall problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/23/2019

I was driving home tonight and the car stalled everything quit working, the car jumped a few times and turned back on. I lost brakes and no steering coming down a 8 % grade. I turned the car back on and it kept doing it. I was out of cell service range so I could not call for help. It was scary. I got home and I see there was a recall but my car is out of that recall range at 100000 miles. I just paid 11,000 for this car. I believe I should not have to pay for this known issue.

31 Car Stall problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/11/2019

The cvt transmission is not operating properly. The car stalls just prior to coming to a stop. This is very dangerous in traffic. This is a know problem by Subaru to the point that they issued an extended warranty. The problem is that it is very difficult to find any Subaru dealer who will properly diagnose the problem to allow for warranty coverage. This should be a recall given the number of vehicles reporting this problem and the unsafe condition that is created.

32 Car Stall problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/29/2019

When coming to a stop on any road the vehicle stalls, uphill or downhill. The car then needs to be restarted after putting the vehicle in park then turning the key to restart, as vehicles are coming quickly from behind. This could be a potentially deadly vehicle failure and needs to be addressed and recalled. It started about a week ago and continues to happen.

33 Car Stall problem of the 2013 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/19/2019

Issue is ongoing for the last 6 months. Vehicle intermittently stalls when at idle and placed in gear. Hesitation when accelerating while driving (acts as if it not getting enough power. ) I have taken the vehicle to 3 different dealerships and contacted Subaru of America and I am not getting anywhere. Dealerships can't duplicate the problem, so therefore can't diagnose the problem. I have video records of this issue occurring.

34 Car Stall problem of the 2012 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/28/2019

The vehicle stalls and abruptly stops. This is apparently a known problem with this car, but the dealership is demanding $1300 to fix it since I'm out of the warranty period. This should not be just a extended warranty - this is a safety issue: the vehicle stalls in traffic. It cannot be driven in this condition. Today it stalled in the middle of a highway intersection where I was turning. I had a semi truck barrelling down at me on an icy road while I desperately tried to restart the car and get out of the intersection. The semi swerved and barely missed me. These cars should be recalled!.

35 Car Stall problem of the 2012 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/15/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2012 Subaru Outback. While the vehicle was idling at a red light or an intersection, it would stall intermittently without warning. When the vehicle was powered off and restarted, it operated normally. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to tacoma Subaru (located at 3838 s tacoma way, tacoma, wa 98409, (253) 473-6200) where it was diagnosed that the torque converter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 115,000.
