Lost all acceleration while driving on interstate in downtown nashville, TN. Check engine light came on at the same time. Car was on and in drive, but gas pedal was unresponsive. Was able to idle to shoulder. When gear was shifted to neutral or park, car would rev up to 2k rpm. While waiting for tow truck, car resumed normal function and check engine light went off. 4 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2016 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/22/2018

On two occasions while driving on the interstate at 65-75 mph with no warning the gas pedal stopped responding to inputs. While maneuvering the vehicle to the shoulder of the road through traffic the engine shutoff. On one occasion I was able to restart the vehicle and on the second occasion it would not restart. After towing the vehicle to a repair shop the vehicle started up and ran with no issues. No check engine lights were ever displayed. The battery was working fine and fully charged. The car is in perfect mechanical shape with all regular service performed. The gas remaining at time of incident was approximately 1/4 tank full. The cause is unknown to me.

Failure Date: 07/27/2018

Car check engine light on, along with traction light on, cruise light on. Can't shut any off. Car actually gets very hot to the touch drivers side near fender headlight. Could start on fire! dangerous! think there is a recall on front oxygen sensor, only if turbo? rediculous! should be all not just turbo model! also had to replace head cover gasket and everything that goes with that 5/17/2017 108,900 miles. That should be a recall also.

7 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/24/2018

I have had two incidents with loss of speed control within the past week on a Subaru I just bought. The first I was accelerating from a stoplight when I lost response from the gas pedal and the engine went to a low rpm which allowed me to just barely roll into a nearby parking lot. When throttle control was lost the check engine light came on. After turning the car off and letting it sit a moment I tried to turn it on again, but it wouldn't start. I tried a second time and it started, but the check engine light remained on. The next time I started the car the check engine light had gone off. The second time was nearly identical but driving up a steep hill on a highway around 65 mph. Again throttle control was lost and engine went to low rpm so I could barely progress up the hill at 20-30mph to find a place to pull off, check engine light went on immediately. Before I turned the car off the engine was idling rough, about 2000 rpm. Again it took two tries to start but then I was able to continue with the check engine light still on. After driving it two or three times the next day the check engine light had gone off. In either situation I could have easily been in an accident if I had not been able to pull off quickly, especially in a high speed area as the vehicle could only maintain a low speed due to the low engine rpm (2k-3k). There is no warning before it occurs. I believe there is a fault in the throttle by wire system.

11 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/17/2017

Unexpectedly, while driving, the check engine light will come on, the car will idle high, the accelerator pedal will not respond, and the cruise control light will also come on. The car won't move even while pressing down on the accelerator pedal. I have to pull off the road, turn the car off, and wait until the car starts, the idle returns to normal, and the accelerator pedal responds. This has happened once last year and twice this year; the last time being 2/17/17. I was lucky. The first time it happened I was on a country road. The second time was more difficult as I was on a busy city street in winter, and the last time I had a green light and had just gone through an intersection in a suburb and was able to pull off the road. I did bring it to my mechanic who ran the code, which was p2138, the throttle position sensor. I will be getting this repaired. I am very concerned about the severity of this safety issue where the car just stops responding while driving.

12 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/08/2016

Just received "takata recall" letter stating there are now sufficient parts available. At the same time my check engine light came on and cruise light started flashing. I made an appointment for the recall work and to have the car checked out. I googled this and found that a code p2138 is found with this occurrence and it seems to be happening with many of these vehicles. My wife called me on her way home from work and said the car would not accelerate. She pulled off of the highway into a parking lot. I drove to her location. She started the car and gas pedal seemed to be operating as it should. I followed her home and was thankful there were no problems getting back. I will determine whether to drive vehicle or have it towed to dealer for scheduled appt. Next wed. Kind of makes sense now because when I drove the car the day before to get gas, there was hesitation when accelerating, which I found unusual, as the car runs great with plenty of power.

13 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/17/2016

Throttle failure. While driving throttle completely fails. No acceleration, car will only move at automatic idle speed. Cruise control light flashes, check engine light on. Extremely dangerous -- very lucky it didn't happen in an intersection or while passing another car. Turns out to be common for this model -- my car has 127,000 miles on it.

14 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/19/2016

The contact owns a 2006 Subaru Outback. While driving 50 mph, the vehicle stalled and the cruise control and check engine lights illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000. The VIN was not available.

15 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2008 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/03/2015

My car has had cylinder misfires for over a year. Subaru has told me it is "not their problem" and they have charged me over $2,000 for the various times I have brought it in to fix the problem. They just "fixed" it last week and within 1 day, all my check engine lights came back on, and within 3 days it is misfiring again. They do not return my calls or properly service my car. I believe this is an engine recall problem they are avoiding for the costs associated with the recall. I do not want this dangerous car.

16 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/01/2015

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that while driving at 70 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to accelerate as the vehicle lost power and the cruise control deactivated. The check engine warning light illuminated. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the throttle position sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 182,000. Oo.

17 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/10/2015

Tl- the contact owns a 2005 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 25 mph when the gas pedal was applied the vehicle experienced loss of power. The check engine light blinked off and on. The vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road. The vehicle was driven home. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic and the mechanic was not able to diagnose the failure because the check engine light had not stayed on. The mechanic thought it was the electronic sensor. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000. Bd.

18 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/07/2015

Was driving at approx 55 mph when all of a sudden check engine light came on, cruise light was flashing, and sport light was flashing, car slowed down to 10 mph and could not go any faster. It was revved up to redline and there was no response with the gas pedal. I was only 2 miles from my destination, so I limped it there and shut it off. I had it scanned with a code scanner and code "p2138" (throttle position sensor) came up. After much research I found it usually is related to gas pedal assy. It has not yet happened since clearing the code and making sure the plug on the pedal was tight.

19 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/05/2015

Merging and accelerating onto interstate and engine cut out for approx 3 seconds with no engine power. Check engine lights illuminated and stayed lit. Drove ok after that. This is a repeat of the same problem that ocured three different times last year. Dealer advised both then and now that an electrical harness connector was working itself loose and they will tighten it. No assurances given that it won't re-occur at an inconvenient time such as a rail crosssing or when a semi is bearing down on me.

20 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/04/2015

Sudden deceleration of vehicle. Check engine light comes on and the car goes limp. Vehicle is restartable after 5 minutes, however the throttle does not work properly afterward and the vehicle will not accelerate normally, thus it drives much slower, and will not go above 60 mph. Problem comes and goes.

21 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/01/2014

Driving along - check engine light comes on and cruise control light flashes. I immediately lose acceleration - need to pull over (thank god I was not on a major highway when this accurs). Have to turn car off - wait a few minutes and then restart. Lights still stay on but acceleration is normal. I have seen many different reason codes for this problem - I am now taking to my personal mechanic to have him go over it and hopefully fix this. Very, very scary situation when it happens. Do not think I should have to take my life in my hands when I drive this vehicle!!! one would think that a reputable company like Subaru would stand behind this dangerous flaw with their product and correct the issue!!!.

22 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/17/2014

While driving down I-25 the car lost all power and had no accelleration. The car would only idle, I noticed a check engine light on. I had the car towed to a repair shop and when the code was read a p2138 that had to do with the accellerator the mechanic said it happens alot with this year Subaru. He told me by just shutting the car off and waiting a few minutes it would have driven normal, when he started it again it did drive normal. He sends them to a Subaru dealer and tells the people that if enough of us complain or fill in a report then something may be done. This is a very unsafe car if it loses all power driving down the highway!.

23 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2009 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/22/2014

Subaru Outback sports 2009 model, with no prior history problem except that Subaru recalled an electronic board and it was replaced by Subaru dealer. Just got off the highway, coming from the airport, smelled something burning like wood. Opened the window to make sure it is not our car. Smell was still there. Pulled off the road. Check engine light went on, lots of smoke from hood after one second the fire started engulfing the hood. My husband and I jumped out of the car of fear of an explosion and called 911 right away. Within 7 minutes about the car was completely burnt. Fire department came within 10 minutes while car was still burning. , lost some electronic gadgets, camera, tablet, 2 gps, etc. , and some clothing and odds and ends but everyone was safe. . The women from the claim department said that she also had call about a fire in a Subaru coming from the airport like us. She did not want to say anymore since she accidently said it. Subaru refuse to investigate the fire unless I put a claim against them.

Failure Date: 02/25/2013

Subaru Outback 2. 5xt. 2005 check engine light came on & I could hear whistling or whoosing sounds from engine area. Took it to an auto repair place slowly,ASAP & there it sits. Has 155,000 miles on it & I maintain & love my car! the gears in the turbo 'broke apart' & left shards of metal in oil pan & at this time who knows where else. Incident happened at a red light in traffic at rush hour. After pulling up to a red light to a full stop, the light turned green and the throttle stuck open at exactly 2500rpm. The car accelerated from a dead stop and continued to do so with no input from me. The gas pedal does nothing at all. I had to apply brakes and move off the road to avoid traffic. Check engine light is solid and the cruise control light flashes.

32 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2007 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/06/2011

While driving our 2007 Subaru Outback sw on a 6 lane divided highway at 65 mph, the car suddenly decelerated and lost all gas pedal response. My wife was able to move the car to the side of the road although she almost caused an accident due to surrounding traffic. The car started flashing the cruise control, traction control, and check engine dash lights. After allowing the car to sit for a few minutes, my wife was able to start the car again and get home. I checked the error codes and got a p02138. I did some research and found numerous other people experiencing the same issue on the Subaru blogs. All of the other reports pointed to the same source(s) the gas pedal position sensor or throttle position sensor. Most reported Subaru service departments claiming no knowledge of the issue ever happening before. Both my wife and I have had the same thing happen several times since in both local and highway traffic. I have cleaned the terminals on both sensors and this seems to help, but the problem always returns. I read where several other drivers had the gas pedal assembly changed and the issue seemed to be resolved. This seems to be a severe safety issue. Having a car suddenly become dead on the road in the middle of traffic is dangerous to anyone around.

33 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/10/2010

On approximately 10 occasions right after a rain when I start up the car the engine light starts blinking and the car runs roughly with little power. After a short time the car power returns but the check engine light stays on for about a week. Once the light goes out the car then runs normal until the next rainstorm. It then does the same all over.

34 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

I have been having a problem with my car for the 2-years and has been getting worse. The throttle pedal at times will become non-responsive and the engine idle cannot be controlled. At this time the check engine light is on with a code. P2138. I have taken the car to the dealer with no luck they could not find anything wrong. The car has left me stranded several times and I had to limp or be towed home. The rpm can be anywhere from idle to 3000 rpm and as I said the pedal has no control. I have replaced the accelerator pedal assembly and the problem was gone for the past six months. It has now failed again.
