2 Engine Stall problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/08/2020

Durning hard/quick stops the car will shake just before stopping as if the engine wants to stall. More then half of the time the car will stall. It will start right back up but this is a huge safety issue having your call stall in the middle of the road. Subaru has issued a service bulletin 16-90-13r for this issue. Basically they need to replace the torque converter. They also extended the power train warranty to 100,000mi from 60,000mi. Cars that are outside the extended warranty are out of luck for any no financial assistance from Subaru for a known safety issue. My local sabaru dealer just quoted me $2500 to fix a known safety issue. There should be a recall for the estimated 1. 5 million Subaru's that the service bulletin addresses.

3 Engine Stall problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/27/2020

When am driving and I need to stop for any emergency and I hit the brakes the engine will stall due a failure torque converter manufacture, it is really dangerous and after a sudden stop I would not be able to drive away and I was about to involve in a major accident because of this stalling issue.

4 Engine Stall problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/01/2020

6 speed manual transmission - when coming to stop quickly from high speed, clutch is fully depressed (and even sometimes in neutral), the engine rpms drop very low causing the engine to shudder. This has been occurring consistently for over 1 year but dealership has claimed they are unable to replicate the problem. This is very concerning due to the fact the engine could stall causing loss of control. This seems very similar to the symptoms of a bad torque converter as recalled on the automatic transmission, however, obviously this can't be the case for a mt.

5 Engine Stall problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 05/18/2019

In two separate events the car lost power while accellorating at highway speeds to merge into traffic from a stand still. The gas pedal became unresponsive and the tranmission stopped shifting. In the first incident the engine stalled, and in the second it sputtered and almost died during a heavy merge on an on ramp. No diagnostic codes were thrown, so the manufacturer claims there is nothing wrong with the car. In the first incident the car was leaving the toll plaze on the dulles greenway head toward leesburg, va. Under full acelleration leaving the toll plaza and effectively driving straight, the car started shufting erratically, and eventually lost power and stalled. In the second incident, about two months later, the car was on a decline on-ramp merging into heavy traffic on rt-270n heading toward frederick, MD. The car again started to shift erratically, then began to stall, but I was abke to use the paddle shifters to shift the gear of the cvt and prevent stalling. Afger about 30 seconds the car was operating as normal. Again, the dealer has not found any diagnostic codes, and indicates there is nithing wrong with the vehicle.

6 Engine Stall problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/05/2019

My vehicle head lights have burnt out at least once a year since I have owned this car. The engine has began stalling when I come to a full stop. It is equipped with a cvt and it feels like coming to a stop in a manual transmission without depressing the clutch. If I let off the brake quickly it will continue idling but coming to a complete stop kills the engine. I guess Subaru has issued an extended warranty but I never recieved the notification and my vehicle is past the mileage for the warranty anyway.

7 Engine Stall problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/01/2019

I was driving through an intersection when the engine stalled with 1/8th of a tank of gas remaining. Gas light came on only a few miles prior. Luckily I was able to coast into a gas station. Car started after turning off and back on. Only took 16. 9 gallons to top off. This is the second time this has happened. The previous time the miles to empty was showing 50 when it stalled. I was told by the dealership that there is no fix for the current recall.

8 Engine Stall problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/19/2018

Takata recall" I was driving on the interstate hwy. The car in front of me slammed on brakes, so I stepped on my brakes, car turked to a stop while engine stalled. Dead stop on interstate. Not a good thing. I started it back up, kept driving, when , I came to a safer stop sign. I tried to step on brakes like I had done on interstate and it turked to a stop again stalling. It doesn't seem safe to me. I am glad no one was behind me on interstate or I am afraid it would not have ended well.

9 Engine Stall problem of the 2012 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/28/2018

When braking to come to a stop at a light on a secondary road or stop sign on my back street in a straight line the engine stalls, this has even happened when I had to brake to stop for backed up traffic on the highway. This has happened at least four times in the past and again this morning. I told my dealership several times after the purchase of this vehicle I noticed idle would drop out and come back while at a stop, but I was told there was not an issue. I now read this is not true and has been an on going issue with this manufacturer for some time and is a wide spread issue with the cvt. The extended warranty offered and now expired by Subaru never mentioned the possible safety issue of stalling due to a faulty cvt, but actually seemed to say this extended warranty only applied to shifting issues so I ignored it as the car shifted fine both automatically and manually as designed. I feel very misled and let down by Subaru who I always thought would put the safety of their customers first, I guess not.

15 Engine Stall problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/02/2017

2011 Subaru Outback worn torque converter thrust washer tech services bulletin #16-90-13r. Engine shudders and stalls on quick stops like at stop light or at stop at top of an incline like exiting a parking garage. Issue was diagnosed at my authorized Subaru services dept yesterday that it was torque converter and I'd be responsible for repair cost. Service tech and service dept manager confirmed that they did agree with my input when presenting the car. I was the one who diagnosed the problem -- which they confirmed. Bulletin states the availability of a countermeasure torque converter assembly thrust washer changed from solid brushing type to needle bearing type. I have read extensive complaints from other owners experiencing this problem. This is a very serious issue that if not resolved can result in injury or death. I was almost in an accident because of this defect last week. Subaru acknowledges the defect. . . But has done nothing about it. This needs to be a safety recall before someone gets killed!!! in some cases this defect has caused a fire in the engine. Consumers have documented this serious defect on NHTSA, car talk, cars. Com. Subaru needs to recall these vehicles!!!!.

18 Engine Stall problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/10/2014

1st incident 1/10/2014- leaving a stop light car would not accelerate and vdc, cel and brake light flashing. Sat on the side of the road for about 1/2 hour. Husband came to pick us up and tried starting the car. The car started and was able to drive w/o further issue. Check codes and had misfire cyc 1,2,3,4. Local mechanic could find nothing wrong cleared codes. Husband noticed both drl lights were blown. Replaced both and when the key was turned on (not started) heard a loud squealing electrical noise from the area of the alternator/power steering pump where the electrical harness is bolted to the top of the engine. Started the car and it drove fine for about 2 weeks. 2nd incident 1/14/2014 - pulling away from a friends house vdc and cel lights come on. Turn off car and sit for about 20 minutes. Start car all warning lights gone and car drove fine. Husband checked codes and found misfire cyc 1,2 only 3rd incident 1/30/2014 - leaving stop light and vdc light comes on and car will only go about 3 miles per hour enough to get it off road and engine stalls. No cel this time. Sit for about five minutes start car and it drives fine and all lights gone. Replaced the battery and had mechanic clean out the abs brake sensors. Subaru America and our dealership where we bought the car are aware and can find nothing wrong.

19 Engine Stall problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/08/2012

I bought my Outback in March 2010. I noticed my dash lights flickering early in my ownership, but I thought they flickered because maybe I went into a shadow and a sensor caused them to go off and on. The feeling the car is going to stall has happened before, but it was and would only happen every now and again. On a recent trip, January 8, 2012, it did it every time I slowed down for 4 or 5 traffic lights . That really got my attention. I thought maybe my brakes were catching so I took it into my dealer on January 12, 2010. They told me the brakes were fine. After I thought about it, I decided the "catching feeling" actually felt more like l had not depressed a clutch when slowing down and the car was going to stall. The only problem with that theory is that I have an automatic I spoke to my-son in-law about the feeling that the engine is going to stall when I slow down at a light. He mentioned that he had noticed the flickering lights last winter when he drove my car. He explained to me that it was not normal for the lights to do that. He told me to have the alternator checked out. I took it back to the dealer on January 27, 2012. They ran three different diagnostic test and everything checked out fine. I am so afraid the car will cut out on me and I will lose control on the road. I thought I was the only one having this problem, but after my son did an internet search he found a lot of people having the same problem. From the complaints I read most people have a manual transmission.

21 Engine Stall problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/09/2011

The engine stalls while at a stop or coming to a stop. The rpms suddenly drop and the engine stops. Car will restart and operate normally for a while but the problem has been persistent and is occurring more frequently. The dealer could not replicate the problem and returned the vehicle to us. The next day, it did the same thing. This is a dangerous situation especially when making a turn and experiencing a stall, loss of power steering, and acceleration.

22 Engine Stall problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/30/2010

I have a 2010 Subaru Outback pzev 6-sp manual. The engine will sometimes stall (4 times and counting, in the past 4 months) when the clutch is depressed to slow down for a stop sign or light. Also at times the engine will stumble when the clutch is depressed for upshifts (numerous times over the months). The problem is aggravated when the a/c is on. This stall problem can happen at any speed, most notably at 70kph in 4th gear - shifting to neutral while approaching a red light. The orange and red dash lights will come on, steering and braking become heavy, the a/c shuts off while the fan continues to run and a restart with the key is necessary. Thank god this has not yet happened on an on-ramp or off-ramp.

23 Engine Stall problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/20/2010

2011 Subaru Outback wagon - stalling problem. With clutch pedal depressed fully the engine stalled twice during a turn and coming to a stop sign. Lost power steering in corner - this is a safety issue!.

24 Engine Stall problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/06/2010

The 2010 Subaru Outback 4 cylinder, standard, has a significant stall flaw. The vehicle will stall in traffic when the clutch is pressed. This happened on the interstate while accelerating on the onramp. At 50 mph with the clutch depressed, the engine stalled resulting in no power steering. A tractor trailer barely avoided hitting this car as we maneuvered to the side. The engine started up promptly. This is the 10th time the car has stalled and the most serious to date. Other incidents have been at lower speeds with the clutch depressed: 20 mph, left turns, and decelerating. The local dealership has inspected the car 3 times, but has not duplicated the issue.

25 Engine Stall problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/25/2010

I purchased a 2010 Subaru Outback 2. 5i with a 6 speed manual transmission on may 2010. What has been happening is upon fully depressing the clutch to either slow the car down and/or bring the car to a coast the engine rpms drops rather rapidly which on several occasions has resulted in the vehicle borderline stalling before the engine computer compensates by increasing the idle slightly while coasting or slowing down with the clutch depressed. This is far more prevalent when the a/c is running. Today (sun 7/25) I was approaching a right turn, the a/c was running. I started the process of slowing down the car by fully depressing the clutch and braking. When I started to turn the steering wheel to enter the turn I barely could do so. The reason for this is the engine this time stalled. Generally you can hear the engine shudder before a stall, in this case it did not. It almost resulted in the vehicle hitting a pole with my two young children inside. The car restarted right away and I was able to resume normal operations. During the course of this same day on at least two more occasion I fully depressed the clutch to either slow the car or coast and the car shudder indicating a potential stall but the car compensated. This issue needs to be addressed ASAP because it will result in a serious accident. Thank you.

26 Engine Stall problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/14/2010

(1)under normal driving conditions, (2)the engine stalls approaching a stop when the clutch is depressed, it almost stalls every time I drive it whenever approaching a stop. It has only stalled once in the two weeks I have owned it. Possible consequences could be a collision due to loss of power steering, power brakes, and distraction. (3)contacted dealership service department and was advised that they have another vehicle with same problems in for over a month with no fix available yet. I was offered a loaner vehicle, but I declined it. Vehicle is a 2011 Subaru Outback with 6 speed manual transmission, not a 2010.

27 Engine Stall problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/10/2010

The engine stalls when coming to a stop while the air condition is on. The event occurs when slowing down, getting ready to down shift. When the clutch is pressed in, the engine stops before the car comes to a compete stop. The issue is not repeatable. It happens once in a while with no apparent cause other than the air conditioning being on. The issue has never happened while the air conditioning is switched off.

28 Engine Stall problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/27/2010

I purchased my new 2011 2. 5 premium 6mt (non-pzev) Subaru Outback on June 25th, 2010. Just a few days later, with only 50 miles on the car and my first time driving with the a/c on, I experienced my first near-stall engine shudder while coming to a stop. As outside temperatures have gone up lately, so has my use of a/c, and so have my occurrences of engine stalls and near-stall shudders. The revs will drop below 500rpm, the hvac fan speed will audibly slow, sometimes the "battery/alternator" warning light will illuminate on the instrument cluster, and the headlights will dim. The shudder is sometimes quite violent, and shakes the car. A few times, the car has actually stalled out. This could be a serious safety issue, as power steering and power brakes are lost during an engine stall. I'm 33 years old. Ive been driving manuals since 17. This is my 3rd Subaru and my 6th car all manuals. Im pretty sure I've got my head wrapped around driving stick. The shudders and stalls will occur even if the gear stick is in neutral, so I know this is not due to insufficient or improper use of the clutch. The second issue ive been having with my new Outback is a slight shake or shudder in the steering wheel at highway speeds.

29 Engine Stall problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/16/2010

2010 Subaru Outback 2. 5l cvt. Engine hesitates or stalls when starting up from a stop or low speed, especially if uphill. Usually before engine is fully warmed up but also when warm. No difference with or without a/c. Occurs at least once daily. Problem started at about 5000 miles on odometer. Several near misses when trying to cross traffic. Dealer says there is no fix. But similar problem with same year manual transmission Subaru's has a fix involving the ecu.

30 Engine Stall problem of the 1997 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/12/2001

Engine will stall intermittently during normal operation of vehicle while traveling at any speed. Dealership has examined vehicle and replaced sensor valve two times and computer. Please provide any additional information / documentation.
