4 Front Suspension Wheel Bearing problem of the 2001 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/29/2013

This vehicle was purchased at approximately 150k miles two years ago and has just over 167k miles now. While being looked at by mechanic in June 2013, mechanic noted that the rear subframe was rotted and rear trailing arm bushings needed to be replaced. Subaru acknowledged this issue, with recall number wwm-96 (NHTSA recall no. 03v153). I use this car on a daily basis for work and have kept up with maintenance and care, replacing all wheel bearings and the head gaskets within the first year of owning the vehicle. On 8/19/2013, I called Subaru to speak with a customer service representative to hopefully resolve the subframe recall issue, and they refused to replace the affected part or even work with me on a solution. I was told, "there is nothing we can do for you," leaving me with a vehicle that is unsafe to drive, because of a poor quality part made by Subaru. I was offered no assistance other than being told to contact my local Subaru dealer for repairs. After doing much research online, I've discovered that I am not alone in this battle, and I am hoping that Subaru or NHTSA can do something to help keep me safe while driving my vehicle.

5 Front Suspension Wheel Bearing problem of the 2007 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/14/2013

In June of 2013 I took my car to the Subaru dealer for service after noticing a burning smell. I was told my front right axle was broken. Seven months later (January 2014) I returned to the dealer with the same complaint. This time the left axle and left wheel bearing were broken. Two months later (March 2014) I was back at the dealer and my right axle and right axle seal were broken again. That is three axles in nine months! the assistant service manager at Subaru told me this was not abnormal; that the car has a "design flaw" where the axle boot sits very close to the catalytic converter so it heats up, which causes the axle to crack and break.

6 Front Suspension Wheel Bearing problem of the 2007 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 09/17/2012

My 2007 Outback with less than 85,000 miles on it has required 2 wheel bearings previously. Today the dealership told me that it needed two more, replacing one that had less than 6 months on it. Subaru extended their warranty coverage for the 2006 models because of the same issue. From reviewing the forums it seems this part is prone to early failure. I think it should be recalled at warrantied to at least 100,000 miles as they did with the 2006 model year.

7 Front Suspension Wheel Bearing problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 05/01/2011

Subaru has recall on wheel bearings and state my Outback does not fit into recall. However it is the same part that has failed, yet they state they fixed the problem. Headgasket is leaking at 125,000, Subaru states replacement gaskets are better however I am expected to pay 2000 for the repair.

8 Front Suspension Wheel Bearing problem of the 2008 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

Three failed wheel bearing by 100k. One at 30k, the second at 67k. The third at 90k. The dealership couldn't find anything at 90k. At 103k, there is a half inch of play in the front passengers side wheel and it sounds like a jet airplane. This is unacceptable. This is a serious safety issue that is not being taken seriously by Subaru of north America. If this bearing failed at highway speed it would be catastrophic.

10 Front Suspension Wheel Bearing problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/14/2010

Our 2010 3. 6r Outback arrived in Apr. The first time that the vehicle was taken on the highway, I noticed a prominent high frequency vibration in the steering wheel. There is also unusual feedback in the steering wheel at slower speeds that feels unlike anything related to road noise. I researched the "problem" on the internet and seen that there were many forums identifying the same problem for 2010 Outbacks. I informed our local Subaru service dept. About the vibration and made an appointment. A Subaru service technician confirmed the vibration during a test drive and recommended a spin balance. After reading all the complaints and proposed "fixes" on the internet, I told them that I was not confident that a spin balance was going to be successful. I asked the service dept. Manager if they had been informed/aware of the ongoing problems and she denied having any previous knowledge of steering vibration issues with any Outbacks. The spin balance added a multitude of stick-on weights to all four wheels (some exceed 9 in. In length). The invoice said that a follow-up test drive by a technician produced normal steering as designed. A test drive home from the dealership on the highway again produced the same high frequency vibration. I informed the service dept. Immediately and the vehicle was again left there this morning. I produced several pages of complaints found on the internet identifying this issue. They made copies of them and told me that they were going to contact soa factory engineers. The bottom line is this. The vibration is prominent enough to cause fatigue and numbness in the hands on extended drives. There is also a concern of what may fail and cause a loss of steering or vehicle control. The faulty component needs to be identified and the issue fixed by soa immediately. Soa has tried a number of fixes without success (spin-balance, forced balance, alignment, backlash spring, wheel bearing, steering pump, replace out-of-round tires).
