1 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/30/2020

While my 2006 Subaru Outback was at the dealer for the expanded takata recall, they notified me that they found a leak in my gas tank. I have found several people complaining about this online and can't imagine why this is not being addressed as a safety concern.

2 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/04/2020

Car lost power and engine shut down while at freeway speed with 1/8 tank apparent remaining on the gas gauge and 60 miles remaining on the miles to go indicator. Added 1 gallon at roadside and car started immediately. Added an additional 15. 5 gallons at a station 12 miles from point the engine shut down. This leaves between 2 and 2. 5 gallons of unused fuel in the tank at the point the car shut down from fuel starvation.

3 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/13/2019

Fuel gauge is inaccurate and does not show near empty when no usable fuel is left in the tank. We were driving to an event with slightly less than 1/4 of a tank of gas remaining when the vehicle ran out of fuel. Complete engine stall (no sputtering/etc. Before) at 70mph on the highway, requiring an emergency stop across several lanes of traffic. This is clearly a dangerous problem, and it seems several other 2017 Outback owners have reported similar issues. It appears to be similar to the 2018 fuel gauge recall (wtw-82) but for 2017 vehicles. Unfortunately, I didn't think to take a picture of the fuel gauge, but was actually paying close attention as I had received the notification for Subaru's wud-89 "distance-to-empty software update," so I knew the distance-to-empty indicator was wrong, but given the notice said nothing about the fuel gauge itself and only mentioned the dte software was incorrect, I made the natural assumption that the gauge itself was still at least remotely accurate.

4 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/01/2019

I was driving through an intersection when the engine stalled with 1/8th of a tank of gas remaining. Gas light came on only a few miles prior. Luckily I was able to coast into a gas station. Car started after turning off and back on. Only took 16. 9 gallons to top off. This is the second time this has happened. The previous time the miles to empty was showing 50 when it stalled. I was told by the dealership that there is no fix for the current recall.

5 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2016 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/22/2018

On two occasions while driving on the interstate at 65-75 mph with no warning the gas pedal stopped responding to inputs. While maneuvering the vehicle to the shoulder of the road through traffic the engine shutoff. On one occasion I was able to restart the vehicle and on the second occasion it would not restart. After towing the vehicle to a repair shop the vehicle started up and ran with no issues. No check engine lights were ever displayed. The battery was working fine and fully charged. The car is in perfect mechanical shape with all regular service performed. The gas remaining at time of incident was approximately 1/4 tank full. The cause is unknown to me.

6 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/23/2018

30 miles left as indicated on fuel tank, car engine shut down while driving on road and came to a complete stop in left side of highway, my family were passengers in my car and this could have been a fatal situation. A good samaritan helped us move our car over to side of road out of harms way. I am very disappointed in Subaru and do not trust that it has the best safety features if it is this inaccurate in informing me of mileage! I can't help but think what worse outcome could have happened to my family. Thank god we are all ok. Do better Subaru, for the lives of your customers driving your vehicles and the safety of the general public.

7 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/14/2018

Fuel gauge erratic. Car ran out of gas at 70 mph on the interstate while showing 70 miles remaining on trip computer and over 1/8 of a tank on gauge. Starting the car shows different fuel level from one time to the next (e. G. -shows over full when last started, then it showed 3/4 full when started again. Stop/restart the car and gauge shows 3/4 full again).

8 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/09/2018

** 2018 Subaru Outback ** this has happened three times** driving car when car shuts off complete loss of power engine turns off without warning at various speeds - seems to occur when the low fuel warning system turns on at 1/4 tank of gas. This 3rd time almost got me killed traveling at 45mpg when it happened today inside a major intersection. Software / sensor for the low fuel system? something is very seriously wrong. 1. Is this car safe to drive with a full tank of gas? 2. Has there been other complaints about this exact problem? 3. Is there a recall or fix ?.

9 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/05/2018

Number of miles showed 40 until gas was needed- 8 miles later was completely out of gas on major highway- contacted Subaru service where car was purchased and asked if there were any issues with this, he said yes-- he actually said the same exact scenario-- where said 40, and approx. 8 miles later completely out of gas- he told me that they had fuel engineers look at the car that was brought in and said the only way to get good information is to re-set trip a and re-set trip b after you fill your tank-- so it can calibrate. I had never heard of this before- they should communicate this to their customers to avoid this huge safety risk. Police were called to us broken down on freeway to alert traffic we were sitting on shoulder- very unsafe area to "run out of gas"- Subaru should get this glitch fixed-- and most importantly, communicate to people that this is a known problem. I have also contacted Subaru America to let them know and I have opened a case. They will call me back no later than Wednesday, oct 10th, 2018 with an update. I also wanted this to be brought to ntsb attention since Subaru sounded like they knew about it, but didn't even tell us when we purchased the car. Car has roughly 4k miles on it.

10 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/04/2018

Fuel software programming defect - fuel warning light does not illuminate nor read properly below 50 miles. I had 30 miles left in the tank, parked the car and after work (approx. 8 hours) I went to start the car and it would not start. Had to utilize roadside assistance - thank goodness this didn't happen while the vehicle was in motion or on the highway. This is unacceptable. Brand new car runs worse than my 1988 Honda crx.

11 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/02/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2018 Subaru Outback. While the contact's wife was driving 50 mph, the vehicle shut off without warning. The vehicle was towed to mccurley integrity Subaru (located at 9620 sandifur pkwy, pasco, wa 99301, (509) 412-7100) where it was diagnosed that the vehicle ran out of fuel. The contact was informed that when the fuel gauge displayed 20 miles to empty, the fuel tank was actually empty. The contact was informed that the fuel gauge was defective and the manufacturer was working on a remedy. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 2,000. The VIN was not available.

12 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/08/2018

Driving the car on i95 at 60 m/h with the gas indicator displaying 30 miles range, and a 1/8 tank left, the car get to a lower gear and the stall. The engine get a complete stop, but I managed to get to the right shoulder with no harm.

13 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/13/2018

Open recall for fuel gauge not being accurate. I alreay ran out of gas once and when I took the car to dealer they said there was no remedy to make sure I always have a 1/4 of a tank of gas to avoid this in the future! this happened to me on July 13, and I have bee waiting since for solution.

14 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/01/2018

My gas light went on and the monitor said I had 60 miles left. Within a couple blocks it went to 50 then 40 then 20 and was out of gas. It still said I had 20 miles left when the car was in the left lane of a road and completely wouldn't start. I was just going straight on a city road. People were honking at me and I was scared someone would hit me. This has never happened to me before. Then some people helped me get it across the 2 lanes and onto the side. I locked it and went for gas. When I came back. The car would not unlock with the keyless entery. I had to take out the hidden key and open it. And then when I put gas in it. It started no problem. I went to fill up and it filled up at 17 gallons. So it still had more then 2 gallons when it ran out. I brought it to Subaru, they looked it over for a few days. Called there specialists but said they don't know what happened and I should just try to keep the gas tank at full and it shouldn't happen again. I feel for a 2018 new car this is scary.

15 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/05/2018

Our Outback ran out of gas on two occasions: the low fuel light never came on, the fuel gauge registered about 1/4 tank and computer said 100-120 miles left on the tank. Others have had similar issues and they are documented on the internet. Incident #1: 10/25/2017, gps: 38. 365669,-82. 850853. Incident #2: 06/05/2018, gps: 38. 519781,-89. 707681. Both incidents were on interstate highways during a long day of driving. During the 2nd incident I took pictures of the dash to document the gauges. The dash photos show about 1/4 tank of fuel remaining, 100 miles until empty and no low fuel warning light. Aaa put 2. 5 gallons of gas into the tank, we drove a few miles to the next exit and filled up. Tank accepted 13. 5 gallons. So 2. 5 + 13. 5 = 16 gallons, yet the fuel capacity is listed as 18. 5 gallons. So somewhere there is a discrepancy of 2. 5 gallons. All these details and documentation was provided to the local Subaru dealership. We notified out local dealership of the issue on 6/5/18, they had the car several days and said a fix would be out by end of summer. To date Subaru and my local dealership have been unable to provide a fix for the issue. So nearly 6 months later and still no fix. This same problem was reported to Subaru as far back as 12/2016. Here's a write-up from 12/2016 about a person having an issue running out of gas. . Read more...

16 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 05/25/2018

We were traveling on the interstate and the miles to go before needing fuel monitoring system said we had 60 miles of fuel left. When reached 30 miles of fuel left on the fuel monitoring system the car died as if we were out of gas. It would not start again until be put fuel in the tank. I feel this is a dangerous liability. It just so happened that we had taken an exit and couldn't even make it to the gas station we could see a 100 yards from the exit. We did manage to get the car pulled off to the side of a very busy highway, but it was to dangerous to let anyone walk to the station and had to call someone for help. I heard there was a recall for this problem but we did not receive a notice for our car. I am filing this report because I feel something needs to be done before it happens again. We can't trust the fuel gauge and therefore we make sure it doesn't get very low before refueling.

17 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/27/2018

I was driving my child to school on a rainy morning in traffic,20-30mph on a straight road. The car stalled and then the engine shut off. (I am lucky I did not get rear ended; otherwise I would be in the hospital getting my child checked out. ) rolled over to the side of the road; as close as I could get. . Shifted into park and restarted the car. Started right up. I had a quarter tank of gas and drove three miles after that and still have enough to get to a gas station; so it is not a fuel supply issue. This is not safe!!! this is not acceptable!!!! this is a new car purchased three months ago!!! called the dealer's service rep and asked if this could be part of the issue I am having with fuel economy. I am averaging 16. 1 mpg. My 2007 Mercury millan premier awd averaged around 22. 8mpg: 10 years older and larger engine (3. 0 vs 2. 5). I also let him know that at low speeds the car is fighting as if in the wrong gear and low torque. Also there is not a smooth coast, it is almost as if the car is braking by being in the wrong gear. I have had a Toyota, Dodge, Ford, Mercury, Honda, and Hyundai in the family and never had problems like this. This is not safe!!! this is not acceptable!!!! this is a new car purchased three months ago!!! I also asked him if this has something to do with the head unit which is riddled with problems. How did Subaru let a car like this off the line? I now fear using this car. I do not want to be in a fatal accident and I do not want to introduce fatal risks to my family. I am told that if the problem can not be reproduced at the dealer, there is nothing they can do. Translation: can't find the problem, can't fix the problem, I am stuck with a death trap.

18 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/16/2017

When coming to a stop, the car stalls shudders and quits, this happens more often when braking harder than standard. The car can be warm or cold it can be replicated on command most often going uphill but will also do same on level ground. Dealer referenced possibly baffle in gas tank has detached allowing gas to slosh away from pick up area in tank. Suggested 200. 00 to drop tank investigate and 4-500 to replace tank. Also reported in complaint 10966670 under drive train. Tried liquid heet fuel additive to remove possibility of water pooling in tank. The stall happens most on city street with daughter or wife driving.

19 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 1997 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/06/2012

Noticed a leak of fluid from passenger side by the rear wheel. Determined it was gasoline. Upon inspection found fuel leaking from the filler tube to the gas tank. Got the car to a Subaru repair shop and was told this is a common problem. There is no undercoating applied to the tube.
