37 Power Train problem of the 2022 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/24/2024

Was just driving when I noticed my car was sounding louder than usual. Then when I stared it after running some errands it sounds like a bad engine nock. So I took it in for an oil change and they told me it was a cracked exhaust manifold. Also told me it fine to drive and shouldn’t cause further problems. Then I started to smell heavy exhaust smells inside the cab of the car. Now I have to drive it with windows down or risk passing out or dying.

38 Power Train problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/23/2024

Coolant leak, steering power fluid leak, break pad leak, gasoline line leak, seat heater, clicking noise after turning off car, leaking seats and rear view mirror also leaking, steering wheel expanding due to possible air bag, heater and ac vents lose and also chemical smell/gas/coolant coming from front and back of car, sunroof not secured. Every wiring wet, charger port in middle compartment wet when plugging something in. Everything auto does not work. Car sounds like something is constantly leaking air or gas somewhere, even when off. My safety was at risk by having severe chemical burns on my skin everywhere, hair falling out due to exposure, almost passing out while driving due to inhaling components, low visibility due to auto dimming in rear view and side mirrors. The problem has not been confirmed due to me being in a financial bind at the moment. The car has not been inspected. Due to financial problems I am not able to get the vehicle looked at. There were no warnings except for the blue temp light came on but immediately will shut back off. Car also severely vibrates when turning on. They started appearing around against of 2024.

39 Power Train problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/20/2024

Bought vehicle from carvana, immediately noticed transmission shudder issues when driving near 50 mph. Brought vehicle in to multiple repair facilities. It had warped brakes, bad calipers, needed a new torque converter at least and the repair shop recommended a total transmission replacement. The whole vehicle shakes when driving near that speed or braking.

40 Power Train problem of the 2016 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/03/2024

The "select lever complete" or fear shift neutral park sensor switch stops working. Subaru has acknowledged the issue and issued a TSB (number: 16-112-18r). The issue is that the car does not sense it is in park or neutral, even though the shifter is in that position. For keyed cars, the key cannot be removed and for push to start the car rear gate does not open and an alarm sounds when doors are open when the ignition is on. The car warns to move shifter to park, even though the car is shifted to park. Car has been serviced several times with complaints indicating symptoms of issue, but was never informed of cause and lever select was never replaced.

41 Power Train problem of the 2024 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/13/2024

String wheel locked and couldn't start engine. Called dealer, who said to jiggle the transmission while attempting to turn the steering wheel. After three or four tries, everything freed up and everything ran normally. The dealer rep in the service dept said that that had happened to her "a few times"and there wasn't any way to fix it. Dealer doesn't want to see or inspect, no warning lights or anything else associated with this failure. First happened on Friday 13 July 2024. Hasn't happened since. What would prevent the steering wheel from locking up while driving? the dealer service rep said if we couldn't fix it by jiggling things, we would have to have it towed in. This doesn't seem to agree with the prior statement that there wasn't any way to fix the problem.

42 Power Train problem of the 2024 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/05/2024

The engine, running at idle in and out of gear, did not respond to input from the gas pedal. Pushing the gas pedal did not have any effect on the engine revs. This was dangerous because I was attempting to enter a busy roadway and suddenly was faced with zero throttle response although the engine was still running and was in gear. The car has 5,300 miles. The transmission failed at 1,300 miles and was replaced by the dealer. The present incident began when, for unknown reasons, the car battery did not have enough power to start the car after being parked for 30 minutes. I got a jump start, and after letting car run for several minutes, attempted to leave the parking lot as described above. The car would move in forward and reverse at idle speed, but there was absolutely no response to gas pedal input. The car was towed to the dealer who will look into this.

43 Power Train problem of the 2024 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/30/2024

The contact owns a 2024 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that while driving and coming to a stop, the vehicle shuddered and jerked unexpectedly. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and was test-driven, and the failure was duplicated. The dealer replaced the transmission control module and reprogrammed the transmission; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where it was test-driven, but the failure could not be duplicated, and no diagnostic trouble codes were found. The contact requested a more thorough diagnostic test of the vehicle; however, the dealer declined. The manufacturer was contacted, and a case was filed. The contact stated that the manufacturer had not approved the request for a thorough diagnostic test due to the cost. The failure mileage was approximately 1,000.

44 Power Train problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/29/2024

On [xxx], I was driving east on [xxx] on the north side of toledo ohio close to the intersection with [xxx] . The "check engine" warning came on, all the vehicle "eyesight" functions were automatically turned off, and pre collision braking and pre collision throttle control features were activated. There was no danger of a collision at this time, but all of this left me stranded in the middle of this busy four lane highway. I was able to literally crawl to the shoulder of the road. I was not hit, but it was just good fortune that prevented that. This is where my safety was at greatest risk. After about 10 minutes during which I started and stopped the car numerous times, the pre collision braking and throttle were deactivated and I was able to drive the car. I located the nearest Subaru dealer (yark Subaru toledo, ohio) and drove there. The cause of the check engine light was diagnosed as a failure of the thermal control valve. I had received a letter from Subaru dated may 1, 2024 stating that this part might fail and extending the warranty for this part. That letter specifically stated that nothing needed to be done until the part failed. There was no mention of the fact that the car would be disabled when it happened. Part was eventually replace on July 1, 2024 two days later. Since then I have spoken to 3 people at Subaru of America seeking to understand why a check engine situation caused the vehicle to be disabled. I also asked the service advisor at yark Subaru to explain. They have all been friendly and attentive, but they cannot or will not give an explanation. My main concern is that a check engine situation may cause this pre collision shut down to happen again. Based on the danger I was in when this happed, I think that there should have been a recall and the thermal control valve replaced before failure. To be clear, the repairs were completed under warranty and Subaru has sent me a $350. 00 coupon for future service. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (f.

45 Power Train problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 05/19/2024

Cvt transmission failed and shut off engine. 2018 Subaru Outback limited with only 56,500 miles. On 5/19/24 at approximately 11:30pm, my family and I (5 members) were driving northbound on an interstate highway, when all of a sudden, the engine and transmission completely shut off with all warning lights flashing on the dashboard, while travelling at speeds of 65 miles per hour. When pressing on the accelerator, vehicle would not accelerate, rather the vehicle was decelerating. Fortunately, not many vehicles were on the highway at that time and our vehicle had enough momentum to move right towards the shoulder of the highway and came to a complete stop. When engine turned on and shift to d or r, vehicle does not move. Vehicle is at Subaru dealership being inspected and hopefully being repaired under warranty, which was extended by Subaru of America. Subaru need to fix this, it is a dangerous defect.

46 Power Train problem of the 2024 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/17/2024

The contact owns a 2024 Subaru Outback. The contact stated while driving 72 mph with no other vehicles nearby, the forward collision avoidance: automatic emergency braking system engaged inadvertently, and the vehicle came to a complete stop. The contact stated that he was able to continue driving; however, the vehicle started jerking and was hesitating while driving. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the transmission had failed; however, the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure related to the forward collision avoidance: automatic emergency braking system. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure reoccurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 100.

47 Power Train problem of the 2022 Subaru Outback

The local dealer was not contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

48 Power Train problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/06/2024

Wrk1 recall , chain is slipping , Subaru dealer in boone nc recommends wrk1 repair kit. Dealer, hendrick of southpoint, durham nc, won't cover expenses, because when they did the original procedure, 01-2-23 noted nothing was slipping at the time, and they updated the tcu and stamped completed. Now that the car is over 100k miles by just a few thousand they will not repair it. Cost to repair $12000. 00.

49 Power Train problem of the 2014 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/01/2024

I am just the mechanic and this is my customer's vehicle, but whilst doing some regular maintenance on the vehicle and also replacing part number 383485200 which Subaru calls "holder, axle brg" due to a crack which ran thru one of the 5 fastener holes. Upon normal cleaning of the threads in the rear differential casting where the "holder, axle brg" is bolted up to the left output shaft side I noticed a massive cavity in the casting which was drilled into and tapped for a bolt. This cavity is so large it presents a huge risk of catastrophic rear differential failure resulting in potential loss of control and increasing the risk of a crash. When I called the dealership to obtain the answers to the questions I know my customer is going to ask me, they shrugged it off as no big deal and couldn't even get me a price on a new rear diff housing or complete assembly. Using my brake rotor thickness calipers I was able to measure what I believe is the closest part of the cavity to the hole where the "holder, axle brg" is fastened in place. This "holder, axle brg" is the output shaft seal housing, plus, the outer race for the differential carrier is pressed into this component. Making it quite a critical component of the delicate innerworkings of a differential. Just a few ten-thousandths out of tolerance and the ring and pinion gears will destroy one another, the cavity in the casting right in a bolt hole creates potential for the differential carrier to not receive the proper bearing preload greatly reducing the life of the bearings, and in the worst case, the cavity could cause the rear differential to crack under heavy load which could cause a catastrophic failure, locking up the rear differential causing the vehicle to skid uncontrollably.

52 Power Train problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/02/2024

Vehicle has an automatic transmission and it stalls when stopping. There is no warning light on the dash. This happens more frequently when the vehicle is warm, in early operation it may only hesitate or run rough while stopping. A warm a stop is more likely to stall the vehicle than a slow stop. Hard braking at operating temperature will stall the vehicle without fail. This has been happening since I bought it and it occurs with each drive every day.

53 Power Train problem of the 2012 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/15/2024

The contact owns a 2012 Subaru Outback. The contact stated while driving 65 mph, the vehicle lost motive power and decelerated, prompting the contact to quickly exit the roadway, where the failure persisted. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the continuously variable transmission (cvt). The contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 125,000.

54 Power Train problem of the 2012 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/15/2023

Couple weeks back while driving on the highway my check engine light came on along with different lights and transmission oil warning and car immediately lost power. I was able to pull over without incident. Then I took it to my local mechanic, they changed the transmission fluid and changed some fuses. It seemed fine after the repair and I started to drive home, but again the same warning lights came on and the repair shop advised me to take it to the nearest Subaru dealer which is an hour away from my home. I paid for the diagnostics and the dealer concluded the problem as follows "transmission valve body: faulty causing check engine light and at oil temp light, will need to sit overnight for sealant to dry before fluid can be added. ". I did some research and found that this is a known problem for the 2012 Outback and Subaru had a 10 year/100k extended warranty for the exact problem and didn't do any recall even though so many vehicles were affected and are being affected every day. There are numerous complaints regarding this. Though as being 2nd owner and have driven just 9k miles in 2 years while performing regular maintenance this is very unfortunate and dangerous. I emailed the manufacturer to cover this since 100k was up and it should have been recalled. This was their response" dear nusrat epsi : thank you for contacting Subaru. Your vehicle did have a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty for extended transmission coverage. Regrettably, it is far outside of warranty and Subaru of America would not be in a position to consider financial assistance towards your repair. I will notate your feedback in the case for product development to consider when designing future models. Sincerely, david Subaru of America, inc. Customer advocacy department 1-800-subaru3 (1-800-782-2783) case number: 231230-1800310" they should recall the vehicle for this problem or offer free repair.

55 Power Train problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/13/2023

Thermo control valve assembly has failed resulting in loss of use for the following: rear automatic brake, eye sight lane keeping, loss of heat in cabin and failure of coolant to circulate within engine possibly leading to engine failure, loss of cruise control and check engine light coming on. Reference TSB 09-80-21. Without cabin heat vehicle is not useable in current cold temperatures (currently 22 degrees fahrenheit in ohio on December 14, 2023). Dealer has confirmed part failure. Issue must be addressed to continue operating vehicle so I paid $1185. 87 out of pocket to repair.

56 Power Train problem of the 2022 Subaru Outback

58 Power Train problem of the 2013 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/15/2023

At all speeds vehicle shudders when letting off accelerator then nearly stalls. This is extremely dangerous when entering expressways or crossing oncoming vehicles. Dealer identified transmission as the problem and could reproduce, but not determine reason. Said drive until check engine light comes on then bring back. Light has never lit up. Dealer says Subaru stopped using this transmission because of problems, but is not allowed to rebuild or repair transmission. Says it cannot get new or rebuilt transmission from Subaru or anyone else just from totaled car auction. Dealership is offering $2500 trade in. This problem is well documented online regarding 2013 Subaru Outback’s with 2. 5l engine.

59 Power Train problem of the 2007 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/14/2023

Both front driver and passenger side cv boots have failed prematurely on several occasions well before the expected life and mileage expectancy for these parts (they have been replaced on four separate occasions). The cv boots hold grease in to provide lubrication to the axels. Safety was at risk as lack of lubrication increased chances of axel and associated component damage (braking and steering) at higher driving speeds. Subaru dealer has verified on each of the four separate occasions that the cv boots failed prematurely. The car has never seen any off road or rough condition driving conditions. The vehicle has always been meticulously maintained and all preventive maintenance requirements complete ahead of or on schedule and any recommended repairs by authorized mechanics are addressed immediately. Was urged by Subaru dealer to contact Subaru of America (soa) about the cv boots again failing prematurely. Previously, soa was contacted and acknowledged parts should not have failed in the timeframes as it had. This time with even less mileage and time in service, Subaru is refusing to address the problem and replace the Subaru oem parts at their expense.

60 Power Train problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/09/2023

The car shudders when we come to a stop, sometimes cuts off completely. I am told this is a faulty torque converter. This is my 5th Subaru, so I love the car, but, I have a family now, and I am not sure this is a safe vehicle for them to be in, please help me!!.

61 Power Train problem of the 2012 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/01/2023

When coming to a quick or hard stop, car will rumble then stall out. To confirm that the issue is transmission based I shift the car into neutral then brake quickly and the issue does not arise.

62 Power Train problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/30/2023

Thermal control valve failed leading to temperature problems and loss of safety features such as automatic braking and adaptive cruise control otherwise known as “eyesight”.

63 Power Train problem of the 2024 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/11/2023

This vehicle has severe cvt problems. It shifts back and forth with a clunk on level roads at a steady speed. I have a 2015 murano with over 80,000 miles that does not display this type of behavior. I am driving a loaner which is a 2023 Subaru with the same engine and transmission as mine and it has none of my safety problems. The additional safety problems are: very poor resolution on backup camera and incorrect guidance lines; we are a hands free state and my voice command will not properly make calls; built in nav is horrible and android auto doesn't work; adaptive headlights don't work; lane centering hugs the left side of the lane to a degree that I have to pull to the right if a vehicle is passing me; auto rear braking does not work properly. The rest of the items are more of a nuisance than safety oriented. I have owned over a dozen Subarus without having any issues.

64 Power Train problem of the 2012 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/06/2023

The torque converter is failing at 113,00. It has happened at red lights, but more recently while on a texas freeway that I had to come to a hard stop which cause the engine to stall out at 40 mph. My child was in the car and on a fast paced highway my safety was placed in jeopardy. It is going to the shop to be repaired because is this. I will have proof of repair service and faulty part. .

65 Power Train problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/04/2023

After driving for approximately 10 min from cold start, attempted to pass another car at wot (wide open throttle) at approx 40-50 mph. The car began to accelerate normally, then abruptly stopped accelerating while the engine revved up to the rev limiter and bounced off it for 3-4 seconds. It seemed as though the cvt had been shifted into neutral (though it was still in drive), and almost caused an accident. I had to quickly move back out of the passing lane. The car operated normally after this singular incident - I was not able to reproduce the issue. The car was immediately brought into the Subaru dealer we originally purchased it from. After performing diagnostics, they told me that since the issue could not be duplicated, there was nothing they could do. I filed a case with Subaru of America, and they had the same response. We have only put about 5,000 miles on the car since purchasing it used in 3/2023 with 69k. We also found out that the cvt had been replaced under warranty just prior to our purchase of the car, though that was not disclosed at the time of purchase. Subaru of America confirmed that this cvt is still covered by the 10yr/100k extended warranty per https://static. Nhtsa. Gov/odi/tsbs/2018/mc-10150931-9999. Pdf.

66 Power Train problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/01/2023

Seems like a transmission problem on my Subaru Outback. While braking to a stop the car shudders and then the engine stalls creating a hazardous situation. I'm forced to put the car in park and restart the engine. This sounds like a common issue with the tourque converter on these cars. This problem happens on a near daily basis unless you drive with such extreme caution you can sometimes avoid the issue.

67 Power Train problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 09/25/2023

Vehicle lost engine power twice while on the road between 8/12/23 and ~9/25/23. Took to Subaru santa monica service on 9/26, left it overnight, and was unable to replicate the problem. I cleaned the k&n drop in filter after 8/12 incident since I haven't cleaned it in a while. Subaru santa monica service said that there's oil contamination from the filter into throttle body and I need cleaning and new air box. I don't think that's the problem and this is a major safety issue. Although I have a 7 year warranty that's still active, I paid $219 for diagnostic. Not covered under warranty because can't replicate issue. My plan is to sell this car as it's a personal and public safety danger. Don't have time to keep going to the dealer and paying out of pocket.

I was driving and suddenly 13 flashing lights and codes from check engine to loss of cruise control and rab -dealer says it needs a new thermo control valve (thermostat). This failed part has been common on Subarus for 3 years-reported on internet and even to the point where a guy sitting next to me today with same car and year and same $1800 bill and diagnosis. Should be a recall. Part was redesigned in 2022 I read.
