Tesla Model 3 owners have reported 52 problems related to blind spot detection (under the lane departure category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Tesla Model 3 based on all problems reported for the Model 3.
The central computer in my 2022 Tesla Model 3 failed unexpectedly. This is a critical component that controls essential vehicle functions, including safety alerts, battery management, regenerative braking, autopilot features, navigation, and over-the-air updates. The failure makes the vehicle unsafe to operate. The car is only 2–3 years old, and such a major systems failure in such a short time frame suggests a defect or premature failure in a component that is expected to last the life of the vehicle. Tesla has not offered a remedy despite this being a safety-critical system. I believe this failure presents a serious safety risk to myself and others on the road and should be investigated.

Tesla m3 rwd 2022 - 79750k miles. Touchscreen keep restarting throughout the day , in the morning when I am backing out of the garage, while I am driving, while I parked. It is dangerous specially while I am backing out of garage, car will stop sometime, because whole system reboots. I have no visibility I have to wait till its finish restarting. Tesla's main computer handles everything in the car, a/c, turn signals, speedometer, backup cameras, forward collision warning and many more necessary function of the car. Tesla service center diagnose stats "the cause was identified as kernel panics detected in the system. The internal memory of the car computer is corrupt and will not allow enough data transfer and causing the computer to reboot to clear space" they suggested to replace the computer and its a out of warranty fix, since I drove 79k miles. This is a crucial of the car and it should not fail in 3 years, driving 79k in California is not unusual, Tesla service also blamed that we didn't extended our warranty after 50k. We couldn't find any correspondence from Tesla on service app or email regrading warranty extension. $3000 to replace a computer is a very high price.
Tesla needs to be required to implement trailer mode to all Model 3/y vehicles (not just those equipped with a tow hitch from the factory) because the basic autopilot and existing safety software does not correctly identify when the vehicle is towing a trailer. Legal aftermarket tow hitch installations exist for small trailers, such as u-haul trailer. However Tesla does not recognize these aftermarket installs. And Tesla needs to be required to add the required trailer software mode for vehicles with aftermarket hitches to provide the required safety software when towing. It is needed because of the cars emergency braking, collision avoidance, navigation, and autopilot modes need to know that a trailer is connected so that the vehicle software does not make an unsafe maneuver depending on the driving situation/condition.
Hi. My issue is partly related to case pe-22-002 and may also contribute to it as well. I will forward my dash-cam videos (the false detection of cars in-front of me for 63. 5% of that drive is included here) to your email as support for the investigations. I have been noticing warnings that a car is in the lane I am changing into when there is no car present. This has happened several times, despite the camera showing no cars and checking for myself showed no cars. The first time it happened, it scared me so bad I jerked back into my lane and could have lost control of being safely in the lane. I filed a service request and was told it would cost me an est. $195. 00 to have them look at it, but they said they think it is software related and tried to say they don't deal with software issues. It has experienced many occasions of decelerating for no cause when using the full self driving, autopilot and cruise control. It would cause me to have to disengage them as I felt it was effecting my distance efficiency. I found a new issue last night that caused concern. We have been getting high reports of following too closely, so I drove from plainview, TX to amarillo, TX in complete control myself while driving 100% perfectly and it reported that it claimed 63. 5% of that drive was "following to closely" when in-fact any time a vehicle was in-front of me by (I think) 30 car lengths, I changed into the other lane where the was no vehicles in the lane at all. It is my personal opinion that it is a combination of the cameras not being infrared and not seeing well enough in low light situations, and the software unable to tell the difference between darkness/shadows and objects that should be avoided. These false alerts occur more for me in low light conditions, but the unneeded deceleration has occurred in all conditions.
I see in today's news that the NHTSA is investigating Tesla's fsd due to accidents in poor visibility, but the articles I've read are not discussing another visibility issue that may actually be more widespread. I already reported concerns with telsa's fsd in incident 11618812, but I forgot to mention another issue I believe is crucial to the success or failure of Tesla's fsd, and I am surprised to find that nobody is talking about this serious flaw. Because Tesla's fsd relies on camera video only, the vehicle is blind in the dark. I live in a rural area, and on some roads without streetlights or other vehicles nearby illuminating the areas around the vehicle, Tesla's fsd falsely assumes that the side and rear facing cameras are obstructed because they cannot see in the dark. This was also an issue when my son and I drove home through the night from south carolina. When we hit north carolina on [xxx] in the middle of the night between cities and no streetlights, traffic was sparse so there was nobody behind or to the sides of the vehicle. Every few minutes, fsd falsely warned us that the cameras were obstructed, and alerted us that fsd's capabilities were limited. One point of view is that there was nobody there so my car was clear, and fsd could assume that everything is okay and suppress the warning, but what if the driver of the other vehicle at night failed to have their lights on? and how will fsd ever know that the camera is obstructed, or is in pitch dark? take an average of the low light across multiple cameras? is that risky? in my opinion, Tesla's fsd cannot rely on video alone and either needs to use lidar, night vision, or 3d radar to see more accurately around the vehicle in poor visibility conditions. The answer to low light, bright low sun, fog, or dust is probably the same solution. But we were all promised fsd, so will musk upgrade the hardware in our cars at Tesla's expense, or expect all of us to pay for the upgrade to get what we were all promised? information redacted pursuant to the freedom.

Nothing happened my cameras just stop working I was told it was a defective sensor.
Safety features on my car are currently unavailable. I called the dealership and was told it was due to a defected sensor in the back windshield. And I would have to pay to replace the entire windshield. Even tho the sensor is defective.
Software updates caused failure notifications (seat restraint system) and disabled cameras/emergency brakes, happened immediately right after software updates. All hardware performed and properly functioned before the software updates. 1. First failure noticed on the begin of March 2024, component affected : " rear center safety restraint system fault". Second failure noticed on 25 November 2024, component affected: " autopilot cameras unavailable", "automatic emergency braking is unavailable" 2. I feel extremely unsafe now when using the vehicle with failure notification of the car's components, especially while driving my children to school. I am unsure if the system failure that could causes accidents and put my kids at risk or danger. 3. First issue was notified Tesla representative immediately right after the software update (happened over night). They scheduled an appointment, but I saw a charge bill that I have to approve before taking the car in for an inspection. It happened when my car is just out of warranty. I called Tesla dealership in buena park, CA to discuss about my safety concerns and got told it might be just a software glitch and I should be ok to drive. (??). Second issue was also notified Tesla and got a schedule for an inspection/service on December 10th, 2024, and again with an approval of $650 that I might got charged for ahead of the service ???? (why do I get charged for something that wasn't my false until Tesla pushed a bad software to make us pay for their bad scripts?) 4. There was no failure notification "at all" before the last 2 or 3 software updates. Tesla offered some kind of 1 month free fsd then software updates to remove the fsd then everything started to fall apart. I am very concerned with Tesla software updates now and failures it might cause that put our family at risk because of their bad scripts or batches.

I got a recall notice from Tesla and Tesla is still in safety violation and is refusing to fix the issue, so I need your help to force Tesla to fix their abusive ways. The recall 23v-838 is related to "when autosteer is engaged". Autosteer/autopilot/fsd now disables even when not engaged, alleging "improper use" when it wasn't even being used. It also disengages autosteer/autopilot/fsd while driving if it detects "improper use" (even if it's detection system itself is buggy), forcing the car to slow down like in the middle of the freeway! when the battery is low and there's only a mile or two to go to a charger, the software will slow down and force the car to pull over to get a tow, taking on average 2 hours to get a tow truck to go 2 miles, rather than allowing the driver to reach the charger with the remaining battery it shows. Tesla keeps changing the battery percentage for when it shuts down. It used to be 0%, then 3% and recently 6%. This randomness creates "range anxiety" and distrust in the battery percentage being a useful indicator. Tesla should use 0% as "shut down" and leave the rest of the battery as "drivable" to reach a charger to have an accurate indicator. It also flashes alerts on the screen to "pay attention to the road", which is ironic to have a screen display to distract attention to the screen. . . Rather than pay attention to the road. Tesla took away my autosteer/autopilot improperly, and no one in the service center or support at Tesla knows how to fix this bug or give it back to me, so I can drive safely like with lane centering. I paid $10,000 for this "safety" that Tesla takes away at random, claiming they can do whatever they want because they've now labeled it beta software! this is an abusive practice the NHTSA should force Tesla to stop doing and give the power back to responsible drivers like me. Tesla abuser names include gilbert, raquel and tara. Teslas also don't detect cars in blind spots and still phantom brakes.

1. My 90 year-old mother-in law got trapped inside the car in very bad weather because my phone key wouldn't open the door after I got out and walked her elderly friend to the door of her house about 20 feet away, and then walked back to the Tesla. I've been able to reproduce the problem repeatedly, of course without my mother-in-law in the car. 2. Several near-misses because, unlike most other cars, the Tesla's blind-spot warning system, and many other basic control functions such as adjusting the windshield wipers, opening the glove compartment, etc, require you to take your eyes off the road. For example changing lanes requires you to look away from the lane you're about to move into to check the blind spot display on the touch screen. 3. Several near misses because easing up on the accelerator slows down the car forcefully 98% of the time, but does nothing 2% of the time. Specifically, accidentally flicking down on the right-hand control stick, which turns on the windshield wipers in most cars, activates cruise control and gives minimal feedback to the driver that cruise control has indeed been activated. In this circumstance, easing up on the accelerator pedal doesn't slow down the car at all. This is very frightening and unexpected and could easily cause an accident.
There are two issues. 1) the adaptive cruise control brakes for no reason. If someone was behind me they could've rear ended me. 2) at night the blind spot camera is flooded by the turn signal and it's hard to see the blind spot warning. When the turn signal is on the blind spot camera shows on the screen and blind spot warning shows up as a red shaded area. It's hard to see the warning itself because the turn signal light floods the screen.
My Tesla has the latest update which includes the latest recall: 2023. 44. 30. 5. 1 08a3a7856854 I have discovered that the blind spot detection is intermittent, the red line indicator does not always work. This resulted in an accident where I changed lanes into another vehicle. I thought it was clear because the vehicle safety system didn’t properly indicate to me that it wasn’t. The right front of a Land Rover SUV contacted with my left rear fender above my left rear wheel. After the accident I have decided to check the blind spot indicator as I realized it cannot be trusted, and the vehicle behind you in the lane next to you can be at your rear corner and the car will 50/50 not report a car is there, and not give the red “unsafe” indicator. There were times a vehicle was side by side with me and the blind spot indicator did not light up at all. There are also times the side camera is either black with no image or with a delayed/frozen image when using the turn signal. The side fender cameras also fails to accurately show vehicle distance at night as they have excessive glair on the live view when changing lanes. However afterwards the dash cam recording on the hdd is crystal clear. Which means the live view with turn signal lacks the clarity required to be safe to use when driving. Either software or hardware or both is lacking in keeping safety features functional. Recall? I believe Tesla should have another recall issued to address these problems. To make it safe for changing lanes by correcting the intermittent blind spot detection. By making the turn signal fender camera crystal clear for drivers when changing lanes. And by increasing the distance allowed before the blind spot detection says it’s safe to change lanes. And upgrading computer hardware to stop the lag and keep safety systems operational. Again this resulted in me changing lanes into another vehicle. I thought it was clear according to my cars safety features. It was not clear.
Touchscreen went entirely blank. A few days prior to this, radio cut on and out. Rebooting procedures did not work. Tesla repaired, stating it was the cars computer. I asked for the old computer board but was told it was proprietary. The symptoms are very similar to those of the older memory issues.
As part of transitioning from radar to a camera based system (this affects model years '22 onward), Tesla, has "temporarily" disabled key features such as lane departure, blind spot alerts and emergency braking. Though disabled, these features are still selectable (not greyed out) when the user chooses safety options. These features, which are available on most modern cars, have been disabled for many months with no committed date to restore functionality . . . This poses a major safety risk. This should impact Tesla's NHTSA safety rating which will pressure the company to re-enable these basic safety features ASAP. Thank you.
Tesla cars have a feature that when turn signals are used associated cameras also turn on and display image for blind spots of lane attempting to enter cameras have quite a delay in displaying image. When going in reverse cameras can also have a delay in displaying image there was a prior recall but issue still happens.
The cameras used to display the repeater cameras (eg replace the mirrors) and displayed the image on the center console as a safety feature has a defect where light from the blinker leaks into the housing and partially or entirely blinds the camera when the blinker goes off. As this is a safety feature intended to look for cars in a blind spot and the camera gets entirely blinded while the turn signal is on, this is a safety hazard that requires a recall. Tesla says that it is “operating normally” but literally the screen goes bright white and the video of the road disappears so maybe this is normal with the flawed design but is not actually normal to have a defective safety feature. This design flaw was later designed out to avoid light leakage but makes this safety feature completely unusable right when it is supposed to be working (checking for cars when turning including when turn signal is on). Needs a safety recall.
Tesla has serious safety issues automatic emergency, braking blindspot warning, lane, departure warning, and other basic safety features which are very common in the cars these days. I purchased Tesla for my teenage child. In past three months we have encountered multiple instances where Tesla was not able to perform as promised this morning I was driving Tesla loaner vehicle when I was heading to pick up my car and someone drifted into my lane without warning and Tesla did not apply emergency brakes or generated any warning signals. I have notified Tesla service about the incident and past incidents to Tesla service representative. Tesla representative at costa mesa office opened the service request to get the software diagnosis completed so that they can get to the bottom of it, but drew tucker from irvine office called me and he is in denial that it is a car issue and blame it on me that it is between the car and the car owners manual, I have requested an escalation from Tesla service center. In the meantime, I am filing this complaint so that NHTSA can start their investigation before. It is too late and some life is lost because of irresponsible behavior by Tesla and send in selling the features which do not work I have Lexus RX 350, 2017 model and all these features work seamlessly in the car , I am shocked Tesla is falsifying and and selling inaccurate features to the consumers which cannot be discovered until it is too late. Please start investigation investigation ASAP. Thank you.
The right camera and coax cable have gone bad. The coax cable is corroded and have water inside the camera. This is affect the car to use cruise control and the auto steer function.
When I turn on the turn signal, Tesla displays the side repeater camera on the screen, which allows me to see if there is a car in the blind spot. In addition to the video on the screen, I believe the side repeater cameras are used by the onboard computer to determine whether there is a car in the blind spot (in which case it would display the lane in red and shows a car drawing on the screen). As you can see on the attached photo, when the turn signal is on at night, there is a massive light bleed from the turn signal to the camera, which makes it impossible to see whether there is a car in my blind spot. Presumably, this also hinders the car’s ability to detect whether there’s a car in the blind spot as well. This issue has been widely discussed online, and there are even youtube videos teaching you how to fix it diy. For example, here’s a youtube video: https://youtu. Be/_bupsjguqdy here is an example of a discussion thread: https://teslamotorsclub. Com/tmc/threads/my-experience-diying-a-fix-for-the-blind-spot-camera-light-leak. 261481/ it appears to be a hardware design flaw, which has been fixed in recent Tesla models. But the problem still exists on my 2018 Tesla Model 3, and I believe not being able to see the blind spot on the screen at night is a safety hazard that needs to be addressed.
Complete shutdown or blanking screen while driving causing god knows what is working and what not. Definitely driver won't know his/her speed, car systems status like blinker, auto pilot,. . . Etc until the system comes back to become available. 1st time this happened, Tesla sent me its service mobile service person who mentioned that he could not find anything wrong and if it happened again he will schedule the car for an in-house service center appointment for the main computer unit to be replaced. When the incident happened again Tesla scheduled the service appointment but after inspection the report came back that this is a recurring incident in many Teslas and require a firmware update! service report attached (job number 4 and 5).
In the Tesla, when using your blinkers, the side cameras display on the main center display screen. In this version of the cameras, the blinker light can actually be seen on the display because light leaks in behind the camera sensor. At night, this results in a bright flashing image on the screen, is completely distracting, and partially blinds the visibility of the "blind spot monitor". It is impossible to configure the car to turn off the camera display. Each time it turns on, you need to swipe the screen to remove the camera image, taking you eyes off the road to manipulate the screen while performing a lane change or turning maneuver. Newer versions of the car/cameras do not have this issue. While I do not have any saved video of this occurring, I can obtain it easily. However, here is an article about the problem and how one user decided to repair it themselves. Https://driveteslacanada. Ca/model-3/diy-fix-for-side-repeater-camera-glare-in-Tesla-model-3-and-model-y-but-it-is-not-for-the-faint-of-heart/?fbclid=iwar21uepjkyvkpbyt_ity4obgniohdjfk8geci4dpnxiemzlsvlptv6uzt54 I selected yesterday as the date of incident, but this has been occurring for a while - ever since Tesla added the this camera to the screen when turning in version 2022. 24 of their software. I believe I received this in early 2022. However, with the pandemic, I did not drive much and did not see this issue in action often. I was hopeful for a software update to correct this or minimize the impact, but that has not occurred. I consider this a safety issue with the vehicle that should be repaired as a recall. I have an appointment with Tesla now to repair this, however, they are telling me it will be at my expense.
Hello, the side camera in our Tesla Model 3 have stopped working. Because they have stopped working, the gps, and the car status (360 overhead view) parts also stopped working. This means that we can't use the enhanced autopilot with the car. This is a huge issue as the side cameras and the car status are very important for safety. . Read more...
The automatic wiper does not always work. Set to auto but despite poor visibility on the windshield, it failed to start until I manually adjusted the wiper control on the screen. With poor visibility and having to look at the infotainment screen to adjust wiper while vehicle is in motion, my safety was put at risk. Every time it rains, the auto wiper is unreliable and often fails to start or is too slow to start as if there is a huge delay and does not keep up with in heavy rain as it sometimes wipes too slow and I have to look at the screen to find the settings for the wiper to manually override the wiping speed. Also, the adaptive cruse control accelerates too aggressively at stop and go traffic causing hard braking by the car and I worry this will cause rear end collisions. The blind spot side cameras are unusable at night when turn signal is on as the light blinds the camera image and can’t see anything from it, multiple visits to service center and they told me it is normal and refuse to replace but this cannot be normal as the image from the camera is blinded by the turn signal.
My car is affected by a product defect where Tesla Model 3's which have blind spot monitoring cameras (all Model 3s) during a certain time frame have extreme glare at night, preventing the driver from safely using the blind spot monitoring system. The camera is basically unusable, and this is a feature that drivers rely on to safely view their blind spots. I have done lots of research online, and Tesla repeatedly refuses to fix these product defects under warranty. There are tens of thousands (potentially hundreds of thousands) of affected vehicles, and I'm sure that Tesla is trying to avoid a costly recall, so they refuse to admit that this is a major safety issue and say that it is "within spec". If you search "Tesla Model 3 side camera glare" in google, you'll find that there are thousands of complains on forums. Tesla fixes some under warranty, and refuses to fix others. I am aware that there was a recall on Model 3 vehicles already due to the rear view camera going out, which the NHTSA deemed a safety issue. I would argue that the defective blind spot cameras are a far more significant safety issue, because the rear-view camera is used almost exclusively during slow speed maneuvering into tight spaces, while the blind spot cameras are used on freeways for high-speed (60-70mph) lane changes. I have reached out to Tesla and requested that they fix this under warranty as it is a major safety issue, and they told me that newer production models have had the problem fixed, but that my model year needs to pay to have it fixed by Tesla. I have attached pictures of my conversation with Tesla to this complaint. Please take action against this company, which is putting its customers at risk because they don't want to bear the financial cost of fixing their product design defect.

The side blind spot cameras are blinded at night by the turn signal lights when flashing, making them very unsafe. Difficult to view due to the orange light flashing, blinding both left and right cameras.
The turn signal is attached to the left and right side blindspot camera. When using the blind spot camera at night, the turn signal light “bleeds” into the camera blocking your view. So it becomes a safety issue when switching lanes at night, especially on a dark freeway. I have contacted Tesla and stated that “the camera performance on older vehicles is neither a defect of materials nor workmanship… which is has been enhanced in newer vehicle production. “.
I am renting this Tesla Model 3 on monthly basis rental from hertz. On Sep 5th, 2022 I was at a stop sign fully stopped and all of a sudden the car started accelarating by itself. I try to call Tesla about it and their answer was as I am not the owner they won't even talk to me. I tried to call hertz but their customer service no available just in a circle of press this and press that for hours. . Today Sep 16, around 10:58 am , I was stopped at an intersection on a red light waiting for the signal to turn green , then all of a sudden the car accelerated and luckily no cross traffic and I proceeded through the intersection. This is a serious issue. This car does not have self driving feature, and twice in 10 days this speed issue occur. Also on three different occasions while I was driving on a freeway other cars from left and right swerved into my lane and extremely close to my car and the side sensors didn't beep.
On 9-12-2022 we drove from chandler az. To carlsbad nm. Returning 9-15-2022 in this time we had eight phantom braking events two with cars in close proximity very dangerous I also noticed the blind spot warning chime isn't working and is enabled in the autopilot menu. Thank you. Mike.
This defect is regarding Tesla’s fsd (beta). In the fsd mode, the car switched lanes without noticing the presence of a vehicle in the destination lane and caused a non-fatal accident. I was driving on o’shaughnessy blvd in san francisco around 8:50 am. The weather was clear, and traffic was moderate. I had turned on fsd and entered my destination address. I stayed below the posted speed limit as I was new to fsd and wanted to stay extra alert. At this point, o’shaughnessy is a single lane on each side. The lane gets wider as it nears a major intersection (portola drive). And then it splits into two lanes. Finally, the right lane becomes the right-turn-only lane. Per the route, the car was supposed to take a right turn at the intersection. When the lane split into two, the vehicle remained on the left for about 30 feet. Then it rapidly began to shift to the right lane by giving a signal. However, the vehicle behind me had moved into the right lane by this time. My car did not notice the vehicle as it tried to move to the right lane. It hit the other vehicle. This shift to the right lane was so rapid that I could not react to the impending collision fast enough. The other vehicle’s left-hand front fender hit my passenger door. Even as the vehicle collided, Tesla’s advanced driver assistance system failed to notice the presence of the other car. It did not give an alarm. My Tesla had all available safety warning options on. Since there was no injury, we did not file a police complaint. We notified insurance companies. This is a severe safety defect where the vehicle fails to detect the presence of another car in the lane. Not only did it proceed to change the lane, but its adas also did not warn of this obvious safety situation. There was no visibility issue, and vehicles traveled below the speed limit. The fsd is a safety hazard because it fails to notice a normal vehicle and switches lane.
The recall NHTSA recall number21v-00d has not been fixed by Tesla on my car. I have scheduled service multiple times and they continue to deny availability of parts to repair. This is frustrating! how can this manufacturer have all the parts for nee car sales and not for a government mandated recall?? can you do anything?? please, advocate for me a tax paying consumer. Raul martinez.
My friend was driving the vehicle (a 2019 Tesla Model 3) while it was engaged in full self-driving beta 10. 12. 2 mode. The vehicle completed a right turn at an intersection then veers to the left, encroaching into the next lane. The fsd display shows no vehicle present at the driver's side left, but the driver had to take back control of the vehicle in order to avoid a collision as there was a car in the lane the Tesla was attempting to enter. The blind spot warning is non-functional, plus the camera image system is defective in low light conditions as the image displayed is obscured by the glare of the turn signals.
When I signal to change lanes the side cameras show the blind spot. At night the camera is blinded by the light from the turn signal due to a fault in the camera, Tesla has a fix but want hundreds of dollars to repair.
