36 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/13/2021

Autopilot has failed many times. Car almost crashed. Took it to dealer for repair but they didn't fix the problem after spending $100,000, the autopilot should work as designed.

37 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/12/2021

With full charge, car drives about 110 miles. It is supposed to go about 230 miles. Took it to Tesla dealer and they will not repair the problem. This is deception on Tesla's part. The car is supposed to drive 230 miles but goes only 110 miles.

38 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2021

My on board mcu, main screen keeps going blank while driving. This causes the loss of functionality of my vehicle controls. I lose control of the defrost and other climate functions. One morning while driving in extreme fog and high humidity I could barely see because I could not control the defrost function. Having the main screen go out also causes a large distraction.

39 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2021

Center console gets black screen occurrences and loss of audio has happened at least 15-20 times. Purchased car from Tesla in mid October. Screen issues since having the car and no audio, Tesla states to patiently await fe update have had the car serviced multiple times for the issue. Several appointments canceled by Tesla stating there is no fix and to perform reset on car which im now doing every 5-10 days. This has happened while vehicle was stationary in park and have had to drive multiple times on the freeway and surface roads with no screen or audio. Has occurred 11-17-20, 11-28-20, 12-8-20, 12-19-20, 1-2-21, 1-8,21,. When black screen occurs no warning chimes or audio present. Tesla refuses to address the he issue despite being aware of it and having been giving exact dates of occupancies pictures of black screen etc.

40 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2021

My screen keeps freezing and is black causing a safety hazard and I can't drive the car anymore. I have taken the car to Tesla several times but they won't fix it. The computer is broken and the chip has failed. The ac doesn't work, I can't control my radio, my back up camera doesn't work, turn signals don't work, hands free system doesn't work, nav system doesn't work. Tesla needs to replace my entire nav, entertainment computer to return the car to what I actually paid for. The clock doesn't work, and I can't tell how much battery life I have left. This is a dangerous situation and they have refused to repair then computer. This is an electric car and 100% relies on the computer to control even the smallest details. I cannot drive the car and try to reboot the car while I'm driving. Nothing has worked. Tesla knows about this situation and I am not the only owner who has this problem.

41 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2021

The screen black out and won't back on, I was driving without car info, and when the screen is off, the left/right signal light is not working, because I don't hear the "tida tida" sounds when I turn on the left turn signal. Also I was not able to see back camera when the screen was off. And cant open my fan/ac, I report the problem to Tesla, they said they need the exact date and time (detailed to minutes) when the screen was off to check up the problem! since I don't have that time recorded, they ask me to wait until it happen next time. That black screen happened again a few days later, I tell them and scheduled for a check up and give them the exact time it happen, they got my car and check up say they are not sure if this is the issue that need to recall/replacement of the screen and said they did help me clear all driving history of the car, they did not replace any part or screen for me, since I read the news my model was in the range of the suguested recall, I am afraid it will happen again in the future and my warranty will expire soon, they are trying to not fix that problem!!!! please help, I want the black screen problem solved, not only just remove my driving record for temporary ease, they should replace the so called flash memory device to make sure it won't happen again.

42 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2021

My vehicles main screen consistently does not work. The screen is important because it hosts my back up camera, the pin code needed to turn on the vehicle to put it drive, my bluetooth settings, ac functionality, etc. The screen has on multiple occasions froze ( while providing navigation) simply not turned on and had to be reset using manual controls, and restarted while mid driving and therefore not able to provide directions mid drive. The issue has been brought up to Tesla and they simply did a firmware reset which resolved no issue. These issues have occurred while driving, parked, on freeway, city driving, all situations. I just got the vehicle back in August and have had multiple issues other than this. But this issues has been reoccurring throughout my short time owning the vehicle.

43 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/23/2020

The central screen went blank I took to the dealer they tried to fix it it happened twice the wipers and ac continued to run even when I got out of the car last time it happened at the repair shop the odometer mileage jumped from 21 000 to 58 000 I took the car back to repair shop and they said it is a computer glitch and fixed (?) the problem and mileage was adjusted I am wondering if mileage can be adjusted by the dealer , I think it is illegal. Intermittently the cameras are fogging even when it is not cold. No clear explanation given by the crew at repair place.

44 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2020

I have been reaching out to Tesla service center repeatedly regarding the emmc unit failure where it has gone completely blank and turns off during my drive several times. I lose all air control, bluetooth, rearview camera, and everything that the main mcu unit controls. I have had this happen when it was very cold outside during the night when I lost visibility due to the fogging inside and no defogging control available. I contacted the service center immediately on December 22, 2020 and made an appointment, which they diagnosed via logs on their end and never agreed to physically diagnose my car in person. They keep claiming that this is an issue that will be addressed in a future firmware upgrade, for which they do not know the timeline at all since the engineers are still working on it, and that this is not a hardware issue. I detailed all the issues I was having where either my screen would freeze up or go black and turn off completely and gave them exact dates/timestamps. Each time they saw there was an error and verified that the logs showed an issue but that this was still not a hardware issue and I have to just put up with this until the firmware upgrade is rolled out. This was their justification for not replacing my unit under the warranty adjustment program, and now I don't see my VIN in the recall database either. I am frustrated and expressed to them several times that I am honestly scared driving the car. I have logged all the messaging conversation with them as proof, and I have videos, pictures showing the failures as they occurred. I have had to pull over several times when these issues occurred to reboot the system before I feel safe to drive again, or I have had to sit in park when I start my car and wait until I reboot before I can start driving.

45 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/16/2020

Touchscreen went blank and would not start up. Has to drive without climate control, defrosting and backup camera for 45 minutes.

46 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2020

The center screen/console crashes and stays off for long periods of time when starting the car and when driving.

47 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/29/2020

This is my second Tesla. I've had noises in suspension and have been told it was a control arm and paid for it. Noise immediately returned. Later told its stabilizer. That was on first Tesla. Media control unit constantly failed. Second Tesla - [xxx]- suspension problems. Something feels like it will pop of I turn wheel too far and the brake or something makes a loud noise when disengaging. They say they can't duplicate but it happens every time I brake or release hold. My mcu is failing on this car. They replaced the ram but it still fails. Gps is barely functional and my reverse camera will not appear many times. Sometimes my car won't charge. They ignore and say it's normal. Mcu needs replacement. I spoke to a Tesla employee and I'm sure you know, but he says they only wipe and recycle the ram used on the mcu. That would explain fast failures again. They are trying to stall our warranties out to force purchase of the second mcu that they claim is the best solution. They are not going to stop these behaviors if we aren't protected. I have video I can share. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

48 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/24/2020

While in motion, the large screen goes black and all audio is lost, even the sound the blinker makes. I can not restart it, it just takes time and usually restarts itself. But whenever it restarts itself, audio still does not work. Sometimes it never comes back on during the drive. It appears to be the mcu and emmcu chip. Apparently Tesla knows about this, I have had my car in for service and have asked that the chip be replaced. They have so far refused and keep diagnosing the issue with no resolve. They want me to upgrade to an infotainment system, which they say will fix the issue, but thats $2500.

49 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/23/2020

Brought the car in for service at the macadam service center in portland, oregon on October 29th due to mcu issues; this was before any notice had gone out! I was not even aware of the issue at this time. It was rebooting, very sluggish, gets 'lost' ie keeps outdated information etc. This is obviously the 8gb memory device issue. After a 40 year career as an engineer and venture capitalist in the it industry I know what memory failure looks like! I was told there was no issue and that it was safe for me to drive to sf the next week. I had major issues on the trip. The system rebooted a number of times, was extremely sluggish and had data update issues. Specifically: -depart lake oswego at 5:30am on 11/23. Soon thereafter the left front fender camera informs me it is not working. It does so repeatedly every minute or so for a long time. Then all cameras inform me they are not working. I stop, twice, clean all the cameras and it does not resolve anything. I give up on the cameras working and stop using cruise control -at 12:31pm in the shasta area streaming fails and then the whole mcu shuts down. While driving in the rain I am forced to react and open windows to keep the windows from fogging up while driving at 70mph. Othis is a serious safety concern. I have updated my NHTSA complaint to include these serious safety concerns. -7:48pm 11/23, while supercharging in emeryville the mcu completely froze. I was had to force a reboot. 2nd reboot in one day -5:28pm 11/24 mcu crashes while driving again! how do you not understand the safety implications of this?! this is the 3rd crash in 2 days!. I will make an appointment and expect you to fix this issue. I will continue to update my NHTSA complaint regarding these safety issues until Tesla resolves them. 50 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2020

My screen turned blank and there was no way to see the rear view camera, the turning signal, to set the temperature control due to a known defect of a memory chip. I took the car into the dealership with history of multiple black outs, and they refuse to replace it although Tesla website said that they would.

51 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2020

Experiencing regular blackouts of main screen forcing me to stop driving and wait for reboot (unless triggered manually as per Tesla SC advice). Complete blackouts have happened regularly about 5-7 times over the last 2 months, latest being Nov 17 at 6:30pm. Tesla service center ran diagnostics on latest occurrence and claim firmware issue as opposed to emmc fault as per extended warranty communication received from Tesla about a month ago. According to SC diagnostics showed 'mcu using a high amount of resources' at the time of failure and referring to firmware issue. No updated firmware eta given. Asked about characteristics that distinguish mcu failure from firmware issue with no response from SC. Seems like Tesla is avoiding an underlying mcu fault by claiming firmware. I am fine with a new firmware to fix the experienced problem. However, I am not satisfied with justifying fault with firmware issue but no solution. This must be a well known issue at Tesla which should have triggered an immediate firmware solution. No firmware solution to me indicates an underlying problem. With the extended warranty on the mcu it is clear that Tesla has been forced to recognize the problem, however, without actual solution for customer. Blackout happens while driving. Investigation of firmware issue related to blackout problem needed and furthermore, what distinguishes characteristics of blackout generated by mcu (emmc) and firmware issue.

52 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2020

My mcu is continuing to power off while I'm driving and the small screen takes longer to boot up. This also happens when surfing still before I start out of my garage.

53 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2020

Tesla onboard computer crashed, no back up camera when reversing, indicator lights didn't work, no navigation, radio, bluetooth, unable to control air conditioner. Tsla upgraded "daughter board" a few months ago, but it happened again. Taking it to service in Dec. Hope they upgrade the chip instead of installing the same old emmc that has been creating the problem.

54 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2020

The mcu touchscreen fails constantly causing no access to rear view camera, ac controls, navigation, and loss of preset settings for mirrors and drive seat position. Reboot takes over 5 mins while car is in operation to no ac working. Both headlights have been replaced over 10 times due to burned out daytime running lights. I have paid for the last replacement only for it to fail again.

55 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2020

Mcu still failing after having it replaced.

56 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2020

The mcu touchscreen is requiring rebooting on an increasing basis, 4 or 5 times a week. The rebooting can take at least 5 minutes. I feel it is a safety problem since the vehicle is non-operational during this time.

57 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/11/2020

On March 22, 2021 Tesla announced a recall of the 8gb multimediacard (emmc) for my 2017 Tesla Model S. It causes the main touchscreen to go fail, rear camera to fail, lose of control of radio/defrost and all other commands that require this touch screen. Tesla said they would replace the emmc. That was almost a year ago. My vehicle has experienced this failure multiple times both before and after the notice and yet still nothing. I actually took my car in for this failure in Nov 2020 and was told nothing was wrong. Its an intermittent failure which requires a reboot to fix temporarily.

58 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/11/2020

2017 Tesla Model S. Center screen freezes up and dash lights go bright to dark. Issue; when center screen locks up you can't use the following- defrosters, air conditioning, heater, garage door remote, navigation, back up camera, auto poilet warning goes on and off with out me touching it. . Very dangerous and scary . I had it in twice for the same problem and was told it was a simple soft wear update. Finally have an appointment but it took over two weeks. Now I am told that if there was an upgrade I need too pay out of pocket for the companies faulty issues. Seriously! this happens moving and stationary. Happens multiple times weekly.

59 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2020

My 2017 Tesla s 75d has been having issues with the emmc/daughterboard main computer/screen/control panel blanking out, where basically the screen that has the majority of controls goes black for a few hours. On one occasion the steering wheel was affected--it locked up. To temporarily remedy the issue, I have to reboot the software/car, but I have to be parked and stopped for 30 minutes to an hour, to go through this procedure. This is a reoccurring problem that started in 2020 and it seems other issues, have stemmed from this. For example, the system has a delay of 1-2 minutes to start up--at every start up; other sporadic issues such as no sound (as in there are no sounds, music, alarms or otherwise, working, at all); the key fob is delayed in being detected (even after replacing the battery).

60 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/26/2020

Central screen (media control unit - mcu) continues to shut down and restart which causes loss of air bag, climate (including DE-fogging), rear camera as well as media controls/gps. Tesla repair indicates that it is a defect that can only be fixed by upgrading to their new mcu2 at a large cost. Replacing with same system will not fix issue. This restarting/rebooting occurs when driving and when idle with no warning. Tesla claims it does not affect driving but it completely shuts down ability to charge, use climate control(including window clearing) and safety controls like airbags. This happens approximately 1x daily when driving car starting after Tesla installed something related to full self driving option.

61 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/25/2020

I complain that Tesla failed to remedy the defect of malfunctioning emmc by replacing vcm daughterboard (see the letter received) within a reasonable time frame. Since last November I have received a number of letters from Tesla informing the recall and nothing happened.

62 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/22/2020

The mcu screen goes blank repeatedly. It requires a reboot. When this occurs loss of numerous vehicle functions occurs which creates safety issues. Control of defogging, rear back up camera etc are some of the last safety features. Currently has only occurred in stationary vehicle.

63 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2020

Mcu unit goes blank and has difficulty coming back online, which precludes me from safely driving my car; the car was stationary.

64 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2020

I have reached out to Tesla to fix the problems I've been having with my mcu, multiple times. They always try to come up with some excuse not to replace it with the mcu2. One service tech actually told me that my problems would be solved if I purchased the 'infotainment upgrade' that gives me the new mcu. Another tech told me that the mcu isn't covered under warranty at all. I refuse to pay $2500 for an 'upgrade' to fix my problems, when this should be their responsibility. I have had multiple camera failures resulting in driver aid functionality being reduced or eliminated all together, and the only way to fix it is by recalibrating the cameras. I have had door handles stop working at random times, that end up requiring a full reset of the car to repair. My central screen crashes/reboots at random, whether or not the vehicle is in motion. When that happens, none of the controls on the touchscreen are usable, and some of those are what I consider to be essential controls. For instance, climate/defogging ability is reduced or eliminated. I have been in for service multiple times now, almost all of the appointments were for things controlled by the mcu. They also have told me that my vehicle doesn't qualify for the emmc warranty repair/replacement, because it only covers 'end of life' components. The vehicle is still under the full warranty as well. I have another outstanding service appointment scheduled for December 1st. I have requested a new mcu again, but will not be surprised if they deny me. I have many photographs and screenshots as evidence.

65 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2020

Apparently a total failure of the 'daughter board'. In this instance the car was parked when it happened. Got into car and at first wouldn't power up as normal. Touchscreen, including all controls for vehicle, would not start up. Climate started up but could not be controlled. Car would start but blinkers didn't not work. Something similar has happened on perhaps 10 or more occasions in the past, though usually could be fixed with a hard reset. In at least 2 instances the ac has stopped working midway through a drive (through over 100 degree weather with elderly persons in a very long drive- very unsafe).

66 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2020

Tesla Model S 2017 mcu 1 failure. Repeated black out of mcu during driving and delayed start of vehicle and 2 min 30 second delay in ac/heat start up from overnight parking. Mcu nvidia tegra 8g was replaced under warranty with nvidia tegra 64g mcu. The same issue is of recurring; black out of mcu during driving lasting 20-30 seconds that renders turn signal audible notification mute and back up camera inoperable; delayed start up of vehicle is better now but not completely resolved. Request for mcu 2 intel upgrade denied as is a purchasable upgrade.

67 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2020

The instrument panel goes dark and inoperable at times when driving. Alerts are noted that vehicle safety warnings are disabled. We’ve tried to remedy with the dealer now on several occasions and we’ve been charged for appointments only to find out that this is a vehicle recall. Despite all these attempts Tesla palm springs dealer keeps saying they will let us know when parts to repair become available. Other rattling repairs in center counsel are delayed pending this recall correction. But we never hear back from the dealer about this correction. It seems excessive on the time waiting to get the component/part to correct this issue. What can be done? it seems like a safety issue to keep driving the car without this correction.

68 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2020

Common complaints regarding main computer. Takes longer every day to start, many delays with everyday functions, blackout/restart during operation, etc. . .

69 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2020

The contact owns a 2017 Tesla Model S. The contact stated that the media control unit was inoperable. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent. The contact stated that after extensive research, he was concerned about a complete and permanent system failure. The failure recurred three times. The contact contacted Tesla (1901 del monte blvd, seaside, CA 93955; (831) 264-6896) and was informed that unless there was a hard fail, the dealer was unable to repair media control unit free of charge. The contact stated that the failure was related to a voluntary repair however, the hard failure as indicated by the dealer, was necessary for the repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

70 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/16/2020

Media control unit(mcu) fails. Car has no audio(radio or navigation), and cameras malfunction. Screen refresh extremely slow. All causing safety issues and distractions to the driver. A reset temporarily fixes, but resetting every time I get in the car is impractical. Tesla service requested I remain patient until a firmware modification is prepared. They did not offer a timeline. I understand the mcu failure is common and currently under investigation by NHTSA.
