Car randomly freezes. Many navigation functions such as turn signals will stop working. Nearly caused a collision. Replaced mcu per Tesla's advice. Issues continue. The last written statement from Tesla is "known characteristic of current firmware. " unwilling to address or fix issues at any cost.
I believe a complete failure of the embedded multimediacard. No touch screen use, no camera, no audible sounds for turn signal or warnings, no control over lights or door locks. Earlier in the year, I noticed non responsive request to start up the car, undrivable for 45 seconds, now it is up to a few minutes upon entering the car, which is a safety issue. Especially when combined with not being able to lock the doors with the lcd. I believe this is the screen issue that Tesla is offering repairs now, but I have tried to make an appointment, and the earliest one is two weeks out, which I have made.
Vehicle main computer lags, reboots, and comes up with a black or garbled screen regularly, including while driving, especially when a usb stick is inserted and/or the dashcam functionality is in use. Tesla service insists it is a software issue (for over 1 year now) and has to date refused to replace any hardware despite spending several weeks of time attempting to fix the issues. The car has had 25 over the air firmware updates and has undergone two separate complete factory resets since my initial complaint to Tesla in July 2019. Symptoms prevent audio for turn signals and autopilot from working properly. Prevent backup camera from opening or displaying properly. Make using the built in navigation system and entertainment systems difficult and often dangerous, causing driver distraction. When the mcu reboots while driving it takes nearly 15 minutes for the nav system to restart. My tegra based mcu's emmc shows roughly 2400 / 3000 avg block erases, and 81 reserved blocks, not meeting the new thresholds set by Tesla engineering for replacement (which, for my h8g2d apprently require less than 65 resvered blocks remaining). The system has regularly shown squashfs errors due to corrupted memory.

The media control unit (mcu) in my 2013 Tesla Model S stopped working when I rebooted the car while stationary (commonly needed to restore lost functionality), apparently due to a failure of the embedded multi-media card (emmc) memory. As part of this failure, the turn signals did not work when I later went to drive the car, the passenger airbag defaulted to 'off' (pic attached), and the hvac system (including the windshield defroster) defaulted to an unknown setting and could not be controlled (neither by the dead mcu nor the smartphone application), though the car was otherwise still driveable. Apparently, the oem emmc had limited re-write capability and a relatively high re-write frequency; when it failed, it not only created driving safety hazards, but also cost more than $1,000 to repair what was probably an inexpensive part (under $10) for the oem.

Prior to 10/2/2020 numerous reboots usually after being parked. Had to wait excessive time since I had pin to drive enabled. Disabled pin to drive since I was getting stuck. It is embarrassing and not a good reflection on Tesla products to have to wait 5 minutes to move your car. Something is wrong. 10/2/2020 while driving on I 40 noted there was a lack of turn signal sounds. Noted navigation did not seem to be updating to current position. While on autopilot the car started to drift toward an exit. The autopilot had disengaged with no warning sound' nothing. Continued to steer manually. Screen went black. Ac stopped. After several minutes the screen rebooted. Had to re-input destination. 10/3/2020. Went to ashland nc supercharger to top off before getting on the blue ridge parkway. Was only getting 4 kw to start finally giving up after 30 minutes achieving a maximum of 10kw. When I unplugged I got a warning "reduced power, systems shutting down. Service required. Vehicle may not start". The screen went black and after time finally restarted and I was able to continue. Later in cherokee nc the screen again rebooted after charging at a j1772 station. 10/4/2020. While driving with on i95 near st augustine I noted the loss of turn signal sound again. The navigation was frozen again. Again there was no sound or warning disengaging or engaging autopilot. The screen went black. The ac went off. I observed the Tesla t come up then the screen went black again. Then the Tesla t came up a second time and after several minutes the controls started working again. Again at Nov 19@ 7:03 driving west in I-4 stanford, FL. Same as on 10/2. Loss of autopilot, loss of turn signal sound, loss of climate control, loss of music. Took 6 minutes to reboot. Took an additional 5 minutes for navigation to restore. There are more instances but I am out of characters.
Large screen stopped responding, turn signals stopped working. Had to pull over and reboot. Next day screen showed a lot of artifacts and I had to reboot again to remedy.

After we returned from our summer home, I tried to drive the Tesla. The main screen did not light up but I figured that a normal reset would fix the problem. As I drove, I attempted a reset but the screen remained black. I also learned that the turn signals would not work including the cruise control, windsheild wipers and headlight high beams. Worried about other problems, I returned home and have not driven the car since. Over the summer there had been several updates to the cars firmware and I was looking forward to the improvements. Prior to that. We were driving with other members of the family, all with the Tesla app on their phones. The car went into "limp home" mode on I-95 and would not respond to numerous attempts to remedy the problem. The seat heaters would turn on and off, the doors would unlock and the entire car seemed to have a mind of it's own. I asked everyone to turn off their phones and the problem disappeared. Tesla service said they'd never heard of such a thing.
This complaint is about Tesla's first generation media control unit (mcu). The mcu is the brains of the car and control the big center screen that the Tesla Model S is known for. When it failed not only did I lose the ability to use this big screen but I also lost key safety items signals, backup camera, cruise control, automatic breaking, and auto pilot. All the sound features are also disengaged as well and this was evident in the lack of sound for the turn signal as well as the lack of sound for the alert if your seatbelt is undone. Specifically in regards to the turn signal for example if you put the turn signal down to as if you are turning left the nob will lock into the down position leading you to believe your turn signal is working but unless you are outside the car you have no awareness to the fact that the signals are not blinking. In addition to this my car lost its control of the air condition and any millage tracking features were lost. The mcu completely failed on me 3 times. The first two times it came back after a few hours and the third time it never came back (was driven to the service center after 3 days and it still hadn't come back). The failed mcu allows you to continue to drive the car and you have no awareness to the safety features that are disengaged. Also, all the sensors are disengaged to me the user which stops the car from alerting me to objects ahead, behind and to either side of me. There are endless articles about the first generation mcu failures. The chips inside these cars are known to fail after a certain numbers of cycles and Tesla has yet to address this known issues leaving the consumer to fend for themselves. Please investigate these issues and hold Tesla accountable.
Drove out of town and parked the vehicle in driveway for about 5 hours, when I retuned to drive it back (10 pm) center touch screen was blank. I noticed that there was loss of function of nearly everything in the vehicle. I could still drive it but with ability to use turn signal lights, or headlights (very dangerous drive at night). Steering wheel buttons, ac, audio, phone bluetooth, and all controls of the vehicle were completely lost. It was 90 degrees outside that night and had to drive without ac, I could not make or receive phone calls due to black screen, sun roof could not be opened. Basically the vehicle became a bare basic vehicle without any of the safety features or even the basic feature such as signal lights. I am not sure if there was an emergency if airbags would have responded either! the car felt just too scary to drive!! odometer would not count the miles too, odometer is lost and app shows the mileage from yesterday (even though I drove 50 miles on it to get home), I even notice battery started draining faster while I was driving it back home. . Performed soft and hard reset per Tesla website recommendations without ability to restore any of the functions or make the center screen display anything. I attempted connecting through the Tesla app, and although I was able to connect to the vehicle, the car would not respond to app for any of the controls, climate etc. Contacted Tesla next morning and they stated that since vehicle is out of warranty that I will have to bring it to service center or tow it if unsafe to drive and pay for repair to restore its functions. The small dash screen still was working, but continues to display a message to "wait while vehicle systems power up". It is completely an unsafe car at this time on every level.
Turn signals all failed, rear camera failed, touchscreen interface failed.
The media control unit (mcu) failed - this control unit should not be a consumable or wear part - when it fails the turn signals do not operate, the windshield defogger cannot be operated, and many other critical safety systems impacted - the mcu has been acting up and not normal for past 9 -12 months then finally failed completely 07/27/20.
Middle screen went out putting the car in 'limp mode' happened in the middle of the night and we didn't have headlights or turn signals! happened while driving about two hours from home when we tried putting a route in the touch screen after setting the automatic update for 2 am the following morning. The car has 101k miles the warranty expired at 100k miles. We notified Tesla of the problems we've been having with our screen freezing and rear view camera randomly not working while it was under warranty but the techs said 'everything is fine and it must have been a fluke' now that the car is out of warranty the now suddenly know the problem and a solution! this defect is scary and left us stranded and unable to navigate to a safe area off the highway in the middle of the night without headlights!!! why would they jeopardize safety over money!.
My media control unit failed in the vehicle making it unsafe to operate as the turn signals, defrost, headlight controls, among many other features of the vehicle were no longer accessible or functioning.
Tesla Model S main screen died. It's a known issue on early Model S with mcdu version 1. A chip on the circuit board can only handle xxx amounts of writes, or write overs, then gives up. Screen goes blank. Most Model S car functions are controlled on the main screen. My screen failed while driving. Unable to set or control charging. Unable to turn off a/c. Unable to hear turn signals. Unable to turn on or control headlights. Unable to close sunroof. Unable to change suspension settings. Unable to change steering settings. Unable to change lighting on the dash. Most features in the Model S are not available.
Failure of touchscreen. Dashboard display at -5 brightness, could not see the information. No turn signals and no reverse camera. Loss of control to air/heating, sunroof, music, garage door control. Tesla remote diagnostics team determined the mcu had an internal fault and would need to be replaced.
The main center screen computer began degrading in performance over time (causing more driver attention to be diverted away from driving to deal with functions it controls, as it was laggy and not very responsive). Then, one day, I got into the car to go somewhere and wasn't able to boot the main computer/screen at all. In addition to everything it controls no longer being accessible or working (e. G. Climate control, manual headlights, dome lights, anti-theft alarm, power steering strength, suspension height, etc. ), I also found that I no longer had working turn signals and had to use out-the-window hand signals when I drove to the service center for repair.
The emmc chip in the media control unit failed resulting in the large touch screen no longer working. I lost control of the turn signals, climate control, rear view camera, charging, navigation, and audio. It is the same problem described in your pe 20-010 investigation document.
My Tesla s has yet another defective mcu console ruined by excessive data communication by Tesla. . It is dangerous to drive because the car speed is extremely faint in the instrument window, and there is no sound when the turn signal is activated, no radio, no map, and no hvac control. I have to pay Tesla $1553. To replace it with a remanufactured unit - some other owner's ex-mcu? Tesla promotes this as a "Smart car. " without the mcu console, it s a dumb car.
The touchscreen in my 2015 Model S has completely failed. I've attempted all of the resets that Tesla recommends to restart the system to no avail. The car is nearly useless, none of the electrical features of the vehicle work, including heating/air conditioning, charging features, audio or turn signals. The car worked fine yesterday, today the screen was just gone.
Mcu - master control unit has failed (center touchscreen). Without it, the turn signals, hvac, radio, reverse camera, gps and remote connectivity do not function.
My mcu failed which caused a series of safety issues. The backup camera no longer works. I can not control exterior lights. I cannot use the front or rear defroster which is problematic since the ac is stuck on the on position which causes condensation to form on the windshield, but without defrost control I cannot effectively clear the window. In additional all sounds are disabled which means safety systems such as turn signals and other warnings such as forward collision warning do not work nor can these systems be adjusted.
The mcu (version 1) of my car stopped functioning while parked and needed to be replaced. This is a known issue (emmc failure). The car was still operational however the following safety issues resulted from the mcu malfunction: - turn signals and audible chime both beame nonoperational - reverse camera beame nonoperational - high beam headlights beame nonoperational - lane departure warning may hae become nonoperational - climate control stuck at one level - instrument cluster lighting setting became unable to be changed additional issues resulting from the mcu1 failure: - all systems and settings accessed through the center console screen beame unaccessible - navigation system beame nonoperational - audio controls beame nonoperational - auto-pilot (lane assist) beame nonoperational - alternating current (ac) charging speed reduced to 2kw - remote access via smartphone beame nonoperational.
Vehicle completely stationary. Center console (mcu) unit failure due to the emmc storage filling due to excessive log data. Well-known and documented issue with these cars. Causes a/c control, media, media controls, navigation, lighting control, and audible turn signal functions to no longer work.
When starting my vehicle, the vehicle's center console screen did not power on. The instrument cluster (behind steering wheel) did power on, but the vehicle was very slow (about 2 minutes) before it could be put into "drive" (the instrument cluster said that vehicle was powering up). I then attempted to restart the center console screen (mcu) manually (by pressing both buttons on steering wheel for 20 seconds), but nothing happened. I began driving, and noticed several functions were not working: when indicating turn signals, there was no sound, and using a large glass window to verify, the exterior turn signals were not lighting up. The rear view camera and parking sensors would not activate when car was in "reverse" gear. Headlights would turn on automatically when it was dark, but I had no daytime running lights (also verified with glass window). I could also not manually turn headlights / day time running lights on or off. The climate was off, and could not be controlled. Charging was limited, the vehicle would charge but a much slower rate than usual (the instrument cluster said it was charging at only 8 / 40 amps 240v). I continued to drive the vehicle for a week, for short distances, and the vehicle remained in the same state. Several months prior, I brought my vehicle to Tesla for service, because of constant restarts of mcu every time vehicle was started, after a software update. I was told to update to next available version, which did resolve the issue. After further research, I discovered this is the first symptom of mcu failure, and I would experience frequent restarts of mcu while driving afterwards (which I did) until the unit would fail entirely (which it also did). I am surprised Tesla did not warn me of any of these things when I brought the vehicle in for service, instead waiting until vehicle became unsafe to drive.
Loss of turn signal noise, headlight control, rearview camera, climate control, seat memory, garage door opening capability, navigation, emergency braking, and difficulty charging the car. This occurred gradually over the course of a couple of days and has left the vehicle inoperable without headlight control, auditory warnings, and rearview camera. This is caused by a failed emmc chip on the mcu in the car. It is a well known problem and not covered outside of warranty, despite it being guaranteed to fail sometime between 4 years and 5 years of age. (warranty up after 4).
I was driving on the highway, and suddenly the main screen goes black, and the turn signals stop working and I had to use hand signals ( most of the ppl didn't understand them) and the ac system turned off ( I was driving with the kids in the car and until got home they were dehydrated, as it was over 100 degrees outside).
Center screen shut off while driving due to a 'mcu' failure (diagnosed by Tesla service). I lost ability to control taillights, rearview camera, high beams, climate control, charging information, navigation, passenger airbag indicator. I was driving on a multi lane highway when it failed. Drivetrain, brakes and steering seem unaffected. At Tesla service they tried to diagnose, and one of the resets disabled turn signals, which is a legal issue in addition to safety. The screen had rebooted several times on its own in the preceding weeks.
Tesla Model S 2015, the main screen (mcu) goes black on/off. The manufacturer suggested doing a reboot, but it did not help. Now mcu is permanently black (non-functional) and the car has lost many functionalities, including two that are safety risks, there is no rearview camera and turn signals don't work.
The main screen on my 2014 Tesla s recently went out and some research online shows that many others experienced the same issues. Tesla sent a technician and said it is the mcu (media control unit) chip that went bad and a replacement will cost $1,500+ the Tesla technician said the car is drivable but the blinkers do not work, along with the back up camera and parking sensors. He stated those things are integrated with the main mcu unit and when the mcu goes out, those things will not function. I am concerned about driving my vehicle without the function of the blinkers as it could present a hazard. There has been reports similar to mine where Tesla added a finite memory chip to the mcu system that deteriorate and will fail after a length of time and because Tesla update the software in the car very frequently, the wear on the memory chip deteriorate at an accelerated rate. The Tesla technician said that the new chip should have 4x the capacity and should last much longer, but will cost $1,500 to replace since my vehicle is out of warranty. With the safety issues mentioned, I am weary about driving my car, especially on the highway - not being able to use the turn signals. If this is a manufacture defect, I do not wish to be responsible for payment to have it fixed. Thank you.
Mcu failed and I was not able to drive my car. If I was to drive no turn signals were active and your unable to charge. Tesla charged me 1500 dollars for a replacement.
While parked with the sunroof open, when I went to re-enter the vehicle, the main screen (mcu) remained blank and never came back to life. While driving home, I was unable to use turn signals, adjust basically any driving items including suspension, drive mode, steering controls, hvac, lights, or close the sunroof. The car was technically able to be driven, but I also had no light control, no back up camera, and it could only charge at a basically unusable speed. Tesla's only fix was to replace the entire mcu unit.
While driving main screen turns off - reboots about 5-10 minutes off- while off- turn signals are not audible inside car all other safety parameters are not accessible: collision avoidance, brake assistance, this has occurred multiple times - I must take a picture while occurring which happens while driving. Tesla has full access to logs. Diagnostics by Tesla representative tells me that my memory chip is within parameters and thus not eligible to be replaced. Although I must continue to experience the reboots that shutdown most of its features while it occurs. Not to mention my daily occurrences: - charging system adjustment panel does not draw on screen properly; which causes incorrect selection of amount of charge needed. Center arrow which is supposed to show doesn't until after selected.
The vehicle had computer issues during oct10-feb1. Loss of connectivity, reboots occur while driving. No speedometer. No turn signal indicators, no parking brake ability, I parked vehicle feb1 for safety reasons. Attempted to get service. Vehicle by April[15] had gone from intermittent to permanent. No visibility of computer screen. No functions. No high headlights, just low headlights, no crash imminent buzzer, no autobraking. Drive&reverse only, steering different, slightly stiffer, no hands free phone & no gps ability. Easy to get lost or confused as to where to turn or whether to turn or go forward. Arm out windows for turning, reduced speed controls. No lane departure buzzer. Changing lane refusal w adjacent car present in lane inoperative. Comp. Not covered by warranty, while under warranty, the repair was declined, stating 'it must be completely dead before it can be replaced under warranty' by apr15 comp. Was completely dead but I had declared warranty inadequate upon first refusal to cover it, July, no parts available, so many weeks of waiting. Dealer unable to find an upgrade part to sell to me. Waiting for a $2500 install of a new part that I am willing to pay for but cannot procure quickly enuf, no matter what. Driving without control of headlights or without turn signals has been curtailed but for emergency food procurement. Doctor visits, mask&glove replacements for the covid situation requires those. I have been lucky I guess that this has happened permanently at home & only a few sudden times temporarily on the road. The failure was intermittent, denied replacement requests & finally failrd entirely, now all must wait while unable to safely drive much of anywhere. Car not sale-able, nor does it cease dropping in price every month while I await a fix. Rental is expensive. Insurance gave me first 30 days, those over now. Susp. Insur. Thank you.
