3 Sway Bar problem of the 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 12/28/2020

My 2003 Toyota 4 runner sr5 was swaying back and forth at speeds up to 35 mph something is wrong thinking maybe the sway bars so took it to a mechanic and after he drove it and put it up on a lift he was frightened on how much rust and separation on the frame especially the rear passenger side right next to the muffler complete separation and then you walk to the middle any day now that would have separated . I was told to to have a tow truck take it back to my house which is about two-three miles away which I did but now it sits in my garage - and with only 139,000 mile on it not able to drive or sell unless its for junk.

5 Sway Bar problem of the 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 11/29/2019

Hi, I am writing this letter in regards to the potential recall of the Toyota 4runner rotting frames. I purchased a beautiful 2006 Toyota 4runner sport in oct of 2018 this SUV had less than 130,000 miles, the body and interior are in immaculate condition I loved it. Then a few weeks later I take it to a shop to have the sway bar bushings done and find out from that shop that the frame is overly rusted they stated Toyota has a recall on rusted frames and tells me to go to a Toyota service center and look into it, so I did the following day and they told me they recalled the tundra, sequoia and the tacoma but haven't recalled the 4runner the Toyota service advisor told me that he had a flood of 4runner owners bringing their suvs to be inspected and some were so severe and the 4runners should have been included he recommended that we undercoat it until a recall happens, so my husband takes it and spends about 250. 00 and undercoats the whole underneath. Now it has been a year of ownership and we brought our 4runner to a shop to have some shock and strut work done and they informed me that the frame is overly rusted again and the undercoat has worn off and now there are severe cracks in the front and the rear of our frame, I am totally sickened and afraid to drive this now. Before buying this 4runner I did research and was looking for a top rated SUV that was reliable and safe in an accident and the 4runner was there now look what I have a very unsafe car not only for me but also my family and to other families that are out on the road. I purchased this SUV for 8,700. 00 using up years of money saved and now im finding out that I will need to bring it into a frame shop for either welding and or possible frame replacement.

6 Sway Bar problem of the 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 06/18/2019

I purchased this vehicle used from a dealer in 2014 with low miles on it and it appeared to be in great shape. The undercarriage was sprayed with what I thought was a coating to protect against rust. I realize now the dealer was probably trying to hide the rust problems. The coating flaked off a short time later and ever since, I too have been plagued by the frame and other component rust problems. Had to replace the exhaust, running boards, sway bar and several other things that all rusted off on the undercarriage. My skid plates are about to fall off next. Just had my brakes replaced and the shop noticed a couple areas where frame now has holes through it and says it likely won't pass state inspection which will be coming due soon. The rust problems with these 4runners seems like a big problem that Toyota should address. I'm going to have to put a bunch more money into fixing this vehicle or be left with a worthless piece of junk I can't drive and will be taking a big loss on.

10 Sway Bar problem of the 1999 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 11/01/2018

The frame on driver side rear axle area has completed rotted from rust, the rear suspension and sway bar broke away from the vehicle. We were almost in a very serious accident as there was loss of control of the rear end and we ended up in a ditch with loss of control. We were driving in a straight line at the time. We could have had a serious roll over accident resulting in serious injury or death. Very scary incident. I did some online research and found a number of other complaints. I would be happy to send photos of this issue if you want to call e-mail me at jburget1263@gmail. Com. The exterior body engine and interior of this vehicle are in good condition and it seems the frame should last the life of the vehicle. Thank you for registering my complaint.

13 Sway Bar problem of the 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 07/14/2016

Noticed the right front wheel making awful sound. I had my mechanic to take a look. It is the wheel bearings going out, but then proceeded to tell me that the rust is so bad underneath that all the hose lines will have to be replaced. Brake lines leaking, transmission line leaking. All will have to be replaced. The rust is eating away underneath the car like cancer. No stopping it. The sway bars are rusting into as well. Our mechanic will let us know how much it will cost to repair the lines. . . But is it worth spending the money on??? this is our 7th Toyota that we have owned, always taken excellent care of vehicle, and I have never experience such a rusty mess. Love my 4runner but really don't know what to do with it!.

20 Sway Bar problem of the 1999 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 02/28/2011

March 6, 2011: 99 Toyota 4runner: I noticed my 4runner pictching on highway even at low speeds for several weeks. After I brought into Toyota they informed that the vehicle was extremely unsafe - rear end differential housing had become detached from frame on rear passanger side - right rear axle close to complete failure - Toyota stated it was too dangersous to drive. Severe rust on the structural and suspension components is excessive. Also large holes in differential housing causing fluid leakage. Toyota stated they could find used parts, including suspension bracket & entire replacement of differential housing & sway bar components - would cost up to $3000 to repair at my cost. Another option is to find a mechanic to weld & repair suspension brackets. The rear transfer case is so thin that oil is leaking through rust holes. Frame rails & entire undercarriage also severely rusted & deteriorated, including entire disintegration of the rear bumper with the front bumper having massive rust holes.
