39 Wiper problem of the 2007 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 02/11/2019

My rear window shattered after using the defroster. Once I got out of my car after parking it in my job's garage it busted on it's own. I found out that this has happened to many 4th generation 4runner owners but Toyota won't recall or extend the warranty for this issue any longer. Now I have to either never use my rear defroster again while living in colorado or risk it shattering again and hurting passengers in my car. I would have never bought the vehicle if I had knowledge of such a dangerous issue.

40 Wiper problem of the 2005 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 01/13/2019

While using rear windshield defroster, rear window shattered/exploded. Toyota acknowledges this problem in t-sb-0189-17. However, they have ended their coverage. While they acknowledge a defective window/defroster; they will no longer fix the issue. I believe it is fair to consider exploding windshields as a safety issue.

41 Wiper problem of the 2019 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 01/10/2019

My model is a trd off road 4runner with the "bold" package which includes a non-functional hood scoop. The unsafe factor is that the design of the hood scoop allows for bright sunlight to be reflected directly into the driver eyes, effectively blinding the driver. Although it takes the right combination of direction of travel, time of day, etc. This has occurred three times in the 5 months I have owned the vehicle. I have personally solved the issue by applying a non reflective decal which has eliminated the issue. I attempted to bring this to the attention of Toyota customer care with negative results. I would like to see that your agency suggest Toyota apply a non-reflective decal as part of the manufacturing process (as they already do on the Toyota tacoma pickup).

45 Wiper problem of the 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 12/07/2018

Rear window explodes and shatters sending glass pieces and razor sharp tiny glass shards throughout the back compartment with some pieces making it to the back seat. Suspected cause is related to use of the rear window defogger. Occurred while driving 75 mph on a highway in rainy weather. Outside temperature around 40f inside temperature around 70f. Letter to Toyota along with repair invoices are attached to this complaint.

46 Wiper problem of the 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 10/22/2018

I turned on the rear defrost in my driveway. After about 1 minute, I started to smell a slight burning smell. As soon as I smelled it, the rear glass shattered while the vehicle was in motion. I was turning onto highway 70 from bridgeway drive in cookeville, TN. The window shattered completely on highway 70 in front of mike's market at about 7:20 am on my way to work. Toyota provided extended warranty coverage for this exact issue but only through April 2018. I called Toyota to let them know but they do not extend coverage even one day past the warranty coverage period even though there is a defect according to Toyota. The program is warranty enhancement program zg7.

48 Wiper problem of the 2016 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 08/17/2018

Sunroof "exploded" while driving at low speed on a desolate road. Car was parked at a beach rental for 3 days in the hot sun and this was the first trip, heard a popping noise. Since there were no vehicles within at least 1/2 mile and no buildings within 50 yards did not think this noise was caused by a road hazard. Looked over the car and could not figure out what the noise was. When we arrived back at the house and were sitting on the deck we noticed the sunroof looked strange, a bubble in the center . Further inspection found the sunroof shattered, still in place. Lucky we had the cover drawn closed but even luckier it stayed intact.

49 Wiper problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 01/01/2018

Toyota dashboard cracking / melting after Toyota extended warranty ze6 closed out. This needs to be a recall I have seen dashboards that have melted and cause window glare. Which affects drives ability to see.

There were no smoke or flames present. The vehicle was taken to the contact's residence. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case number: 1709181574. The manufacturer stated that they would send out technicians. The failure mileage was approximately 130,989.

I was driving on the highway and the sunroof spontaneously exploded.

52 Wiper problem of the 2015 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 02/03/2017

I had 20,000 miles and bought the veichle brand new and went to leave work and my veichle was struggling to stay going and my check engine light was flashining. When I'd go to reverse the vehicle would struggle and act like it was going to die. I had to go 20mph on the side roads about 15 miles to the dealer. The rpm shouldn't shift. It was caused by a mouse I guess? since they use soy base and see this a lot. So fustrating when you pay $38,000 for a veichle. I'd much rather drive my older 2010 Honda that never had an issue with so called a mouse. They of course wouldn't cover it. To top it off I had a major oil leak at 19,000 miles causing about $6,000 worth of damage. Which was the factory's fault they said. It was covered by warrenty, but still it's ridiculous. I bought the car new. With 1 mile on it, fresh off the truck. As of right now I have no faith in Toyota. I'm afraid my veichle will break down on me. Which I shouldn't have to feel when I buy a new car. So disappointed in Toyota. Something needs to be done.

54 Wiper problem of the 2008 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 12/11/2015

The front windshield defrost does not clear the window. I had the veh at the shop today and was told it would be in excess of $1,000 and the dashboard would have to be taken completely off and they still could not guarantee a fix. I have read a lot on line about this make and model having this problem. Why has there not been a recall??? this is a very dangerous issue on this veh. I bought my vehicle used in February and have just now tried to use the defrost. The switch does not convert to the windshield from the blower at the feet with sufficient air. It has nothing to do with the air recirculating or not, the a/c compressor being on or not. The Toyota service center advised it was a switch or a part that may have failed and it would be expensive to repair. Why are so many people having the same problem with this make and model if it is not a universal problem???.

60 Wiper problem of the 2005 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 10/07/2013

Driving approx 30-40mph on standard highway. Florida, 0700, 70 degrees, clear weather. Heard a loud almost explosion. . . By the time I got my wits about me I realized my rear window was broken. I had not been hit, there is no evidence of any projectile, and not near opposing traffic for something to be kicked up. Shortly before that, I had on both my front vent defroster to clear the morning windshield fog, and the rear window defroster. I smelled a sort of rubber burning smell; after 2 minutes, I presumed it was my ac unit, so I shut it off to see if the smell would dissipate. I did not shut of the rear defroster. About 60s later is when the spontaneous burst happened. I have since run the front ac and windshield defroster, and no hot rubber odor. I had just run the rear defroster 3 days ago as well, no problem. I have had no problems with the window rolling up and down. I do find several complaints about the same thing online in the 4runner, but do not find any Toyota, or other safety bulletins, formal notices, or liabilities.

61 Wiper problem of the 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

Toyota installed a sunroof that had known design defects in the 2003 4runner, the first model year of the 4th generation 4runner. The sunroof would eventually stop working, and the drainage tubes in the sunroof would clog and back up. This would cause water to rain down on the head of the driver and front seat occupants during acceleration or a sudden stop. Toyota has known about the sunroof issue since at least 2006, and had issued multiple Toyota service bulletins on the assembly without initiating a recall.

62 Wiper problem of the 2005 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 06/26/2013

The contact owns a 2005 Toyota 4runner. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the rear window shattered. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis but the contact was informed that there would be no way of knowing the cause of the shattered window. The vehicle was inspected by an independent window mechanic, who discovered a burned circuit board and faulty cables associated with the defogger system. The vehicle was repaired. The failure and current mileage was 50,000.

66 Wiper problem of the 2008 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 10/01/2008

Toyota issued a short term warranty enhancement, expiring March 2018, for a known safety defect. I believe that the potential ramifications are significant and that this should be a recall as opposed to a warranty enhancement. The defect is in the rear window seal and electrical system; use of the defroster can cause the window to blow out. My car has a significant body defect adjacent to the rear window seal, and the seal is damaged, indicating that this is an accident waiting to happen. I spoke with corporate Toyota; their stance is that they will not do the repair until after the window blows out. It is likely that Toyota has known about this for some time, as there is information on the internet about this, but has only recently notified owners. When I spoke to Toyota, they asked what the mileage was. I told them it had just reached the 100,000 mile mark - and they said that the car was almost 10 years old and had lasted well. Further investigation on my part led to the knowledge that recalls do not have to be performed after 100,000 miles, which probably explains the delay in notifying owners, and in calling this, which is a definite and significant safety issue, a "warranty enhancement" instead of a recall. My car is in excellent condition, other than that, and the choices which I have are to avoid using the defroster (not a viable option in the northeast), do nothing and wait for the window to blow out (not a safe option); pay for the repair myself, even though it is a known defect, or sell the car, which I can't do in good conscience, knowing the potential ramifications of that defect. Toyota states that the issue does not occur with all cars - that is likely true. Cars in dry climates with minimal rain and cold weather are probably unlikely to manifest; cars in the wet and snowy northeast, where I live, are presumably more likely to manifest.
