The shifting failure occurred intermittently. In addition, the rear brake lights failed to illuminate. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the technician informed that the failure was contributed to the brake safety switch which was a common problem. The part was unavailable for the repair for a period of two weeks. The vehicle was repaired for the malfunction after the part became available. The failure mileage was approximately 40,300. Updated 12/08/10. Updated 12/08/10.

5 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 06/12/2010

06/12/10-I started my car as usual with my brake depressed and attempted to put the car in reverse---it wiggled but would not move from the park position to the reverse position. After numerous attempts I was able to do so and take care of my shopping trip. Upon completing my errands the same event occurred with the shift lever once again. Several weeks back this happened one time and I did not give it the attention I should have. With today's happening of twice in less than an hour I am really concerned. On Monday 06/14/10 I will take the vehicle to my local dealership (dave edwards Toyota) to seek a repair remedy to this problem as soon as possible.

6 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2010 Toyota Avalon

7 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 03/20/2010

I think I experienced a surge in my 2006 Toyota Avalon. I was not sure but people observing that did not stay and wait for police said my car raced forward after stopped at a light. I ended up steering to the right and hit a tree rather than the car ahead or pedestrians. When the police and tow truck arrived they indicated that my airbag should have gone off, but it did not.

8 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 03/19/2010

Steering colum adjusting control continues to release. This causes the steering wheel to go into the the dash area or up or down. There is no control of steering. Before this incident, oil burst all over the engine and drained out of my car, spilled onto the floor of my garage. The oil light or check engine light never came on. Dealer made repairs after keeping my car -not a recall notice but a noted problem. No power while pressing on the gas. There is a delayed reaction resulting in slow or no speed for passing or just driving (dealer indicated power trans problem - not recall kept car 3+ days for repairs). The grey paint has spots ithat will not come out with a wash and wax.

9 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 03/14/2010

I have a 2006 Toyota Avalon. I took it in a few weeks ago to have the accelerator recall problem "fixed". Today (3/14), I was traveling thru a shopping center parking lot at 10 to 12 mph. As I touched the brake, the car started to accelerate, grinding thru the brakes. I pushed it into neutral and jammed the brake. There was a very loud "thunk" and the car stopped and ceased trying to accelerate.

10 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 03/06/2010

I own a 2007 Toyota Avalon. The transmission has a problem. When coasting down without accelerator being engage the transmission down shifts at 30 mph but the car speeds up. It is only 4-5 mph and after a few seconds then starts coasting down again. This problem has been investigated by the dealer and "there is nothing wrong". It has been reported to the Toyota technical service manager and "there is nothing wrong". It has been reported to Toyota customer service and we will get back to you but nothing happened. This car had the "stuck accelerator" problem two years ago and it was reported to the dealer and "no problem". The "stuck accelerator" only happened once and was not the problem of a floor mat. The car has had all the recalls performed on it but still has the speed up problem at each down shift.

11 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 03/02/2010

Our 2005 Toyota Avalon was serviced for safety recall on 3/1/10 and gas pedal feel became more sensitive immediately afterwards. On 3/2/10 while driving in rain the abs system activated several times during normal application of the brakes. This was alarming and very disconcerting. Subsequent driving later this week did not effect a repeat of the abs concerns. However, there is an occasional slight surge in speed which seems to relate to the transmission shift points which did happen before the recall service.

12 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 02/06/2010

When slowing my 2006 Avalon for turn, speed bump, etc. And then accelerating there is often a lag in the transmission engaging and when it does the car lurches. I have complained many times to 2 different dealers about this since the car was new. After a year or so 1 dealer said that Toyota had issued an adjustment procedure which they performed. The problem went away for a while but has returned. In light of the recent recalls and stories about possible electronic problems with these cars I wanted to add my story to the list. I consider this a serious safety issue since the lag in transmission engagement could cause an accident when making a left turn, especially if it worsens. Further, the only way I know about this latest recall is through the news - Toyota has not notified me directly. This makes the third recall on this car - floor mats, vvt-I oil hose and now accelerator! needles to say - I am not happy with my purchase and will seriously try to convince my wife to take our business elsewhere in the future!.

13 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 02/03/2010

My 2002 Toyota Avalon when put in reverse could not be stopped and went into a parked car with 2 people in it! this also happened to my 1998 Toyota Avalon twice!!.

14 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 02/03/2010

Was driving my 2002 Avalon to work this morning and it started having the acceleration issues. I didn't even have to step on the gas after stopping at a stop sign and got to 40 mph no problem. When I finally got to work and put it in park the engine revved the gas pedal was not stuck under the floor mat. Definitely seems electronic to me. Now Toyota is charging $95 just to diagnose issue as it is outside of the years recalled. I came across a report that they are investigating as far back as my year now though. . Read more...

15 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 01/17/2010

My husband got into the car the late afternoon of Jan. 17, 2010. Turned the auto on and I thought the engine was exploding. I was inside the house and ran outdoors. Something under the hood was making an extreme loud rattle. If you took an old cow bell and shook it for dear life, you would get an ideal of what I am talking about regarding the sound. The check engine light and the vsc light was on. My husband cut the engine off, checked under the hood and found nothing. I was going to call the dealership to see if they wanted to tow the car in. I started the car back up just to see what would happen and it purred like a baby. No lights on. I took it to the dealership and they checked it out, test drove it and could not find anything wrong. They said whatever it was must have reset itself. Now my question is what caused it to act like that and what would have happened if I had been driving. Was it in the computer or what. Will it happen again? these things I would like to have an answer.

16 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 01/10/2010

The transmission poses safety problems because it is very uneven and unpredictable, shifting when you don't expect shifting, at lower and higher speeds and in cruise control.

17 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2010 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 01/05/2010

1. On three occasions the accelerator pedal was jammed open by factory cloth floor mat. Removed the mat. 2. On multiple recent occasions when the car is started and placed in reverse to back out of a parking space the car will not move even if the accelerator is pressed. Car seems as if the wheels are chocked. Then when car does move it accelerate quickly in reverse. Have discovered when this happens the traction control appears when the car is shifted into reverse and stays lit for a period of time, then the light goes out and the car simultaneously feels as if the brakes have been released even though the brake pedal was not depressed. It is easy to understand how a driver could press the accelerator to get the vehicle to move and then have the car shoot backwards causing damage or injury. 3. On three separate occasions while wearing boots I removed my foot from the accelerator and depressed the brake pedal only to have the vehicle instead of decelerating, accelerate very quickly. The reaction each time was to press the brake pedal even harder resulting only in the vehicle accelerating even harder. On one of those occasions it occurred backing out of a driveway and although I was able to stop the vehicle quickly it nonetheless accelerated several feet into the middle of a street. It is clear that these three incidents occurred because of the proximity of the brake and accelerator pedals and inadvertently but simultaneously depressing both. I believe the situation is aggravated by the fact when depressing the brake pedal you cannot feel the accelerator pedal under your foot and have no idea you are pressing the accelerator until you go through the mental process of trying to determine why the harder you depress the brake the faster the car goes. It is easy to understand why one might panic and "stand" on the brake pedal only to have the car accelerate to a very dangerous speed. My 190 mph motorcycle doesn't scare me, the venza does.

18 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 12/14/2009

I took my 2006 Avalon in to nalley Toyota for an oil line recall. I asked them if they could also look into the floor mat recall for me. They told me no decision had yet been made on the floor mat issue but went ahead with the oil line recall. I picked my car up that afternoon, drove 15 minutes to my mother's apartment. While slowly guiding my way into a parking place, my car accelerated violently propelling itself up over a curb and through a wooden fence, landing with my back tires on the front curb of the parking place. My braking had no effect and upon landing on the downside of the slope, my engine died. I called Toyota immediately asking what they could have done to cause this to happen since my car had never had this happen before in the 4 years I had it, and yet happened 15 minutes after they had worked on it. They said nothing was done that could have caused this. We complained to the area Toyota rep and an inspector came and look at the car at the nalley repair shop we had it towed to. Toyota says my car checks out fine and any problem was caused by the floor mats /driver. The serviceman did not advise me to remove the floor mats that were in place when they were working on the car. They released it to me with the floor mats in place. Furthermore, I contend that the first thing I check after the sudden acceleration was the location of the floor mat, which was flat against the floor.

19 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 12/07/2009

My 2005 Toyota Avalon with the 2gr-fe v6 engine revs high, even when it's warmed up. In traffic, many times it revs high and lunges forward. Several times I braked hard to avoid read ending the car in front of me. This has been ongoing since I bought the car in 2005 as I am the original owner. I've taken it in to Toyota service and the mechanics found nothing. Once I showed them a technical service bulletin from Toyota which stated the exhaust manifold, oxygen sensors needed replacement and the ecm needed to be reprogrammed. It worked for a year (2007) then back to the same problem, high revving of the engine, hard shifting and lunging forward or reverse. The latest incident was today, 12/7/09 where I almost hit a pedestrian since the car revved high and lunged into the crosswalk. I had to press the brakes hard to prevent hitting the pedestrian.

20 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 11/01/2009

The transmission hesitates, jumps, and bucks and acceleration is very uneven. When accelerating from 0 mph (I. E. At a red light), the car hesitates, and then at approx. 20 mph, while keeping the gas pedal steady, the rpm's rev up, and the car accelerates wildly. When the transmission shifts at around 20 mph, it feels like it shifts into a gear above what it should be. The car always feels like it is in the wrong gear. This causes problems when accelerating and braking and has caused numerous "close calls. " the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, and they made a minor adjustment to the shifting points in the transmission. Updated 02/17/10.

21 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 09/15/2009

I have a 2006 Toyota Avalon xls and I had problems with sudden acceleration when stopped at a red light with my foot lightly on the break pedal, the engine is running, and the car is in gear (drive). All at once, the car would accelerate forward really fast but stop when I push hard on the break pedal. I was thinking that maybe my foot was slipping from the break and onto the accelerator pedal without me noticing it, however, in light of the recent publicity about the gas pedal problems with Toyotas, I am thinking that maybe my foot was not slipping and this piece of information may help in the fault isolation process. It doesn't happen all the time, I would say about once every few months. My reaction on the break pedal is fast and it does stop the car.

22 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 08/13/2009

I have a 2008 Toyota Avalon that I had only 4 months prior to the accident. The car appeared to be in excellent condition until my husband took it to the delta sonic carwash to have it clean. As he was coming out of the car wash, he shift from neutral to drive and the accelerator failed , sticking in full throttle, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. To avoid collision with other vehicles coming out of the gas station, which is part of the business, and hitting pedestrians and the gas pumps, he steered the car hitting a pole, going over embankment, the sidewalk and into ongoing traffic in the opposite direction. The car came to a stop two business down from where the accident originated. Damages was done to all 4 tireswith bent rims, the front right and left bumper and grille, the hood, the lamp ground with the head light knocked out. The driver's side mirror was hanging down. The exhaust system (muffler, tailpipes) were damaged. The rear fender and bumper was damaged. The battery, oil pan, rear engine cradle cushion pipes were replaced. At the time, we thought it was something that he did, but we now since have found that Toyota has had a problem with the accelerator pedal sticking in full throttle and have asked for a recall. The total damage was to a sum of $12,226. 39. The insurance and repair company have fixed the car at our expense and the old or replacement parts are no longer available to my knowledge. I have only photos of the car in the damaged state. I did go to the Toyota dealership that I purchased the car from and they plan to start repairs Feb. 15. 2010. My concerns is how do I get Toyota to honor my request for a car replacement because my car has been devalued because of the accident and is now part of the car fax report. I run the risk of having other problems. If not replace the car, provide me with free maintenance for the life of the car and repay me for out of pocket expenses due to the failed accelerator.

23 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 07/01/2009

This is just to pass along to you that I too have experienced that odd sensation of momentary acceleration while driving, but while letting off the accel pedal. On the handful of occassions when it has taken place, I believe I was always driving in heavy stop-and-go freeway traffic. Almost from the first day I leased the car, I have complained to friends that I thought my electonically-controlled transmission was "too Smart"--that it thought it knew better how to drive the car than I did. I have a feather touch in my driving style, and I have not liked how the transmission is constantly trying to figure out if it wants to be shifting up or down in heavy traffic. Now, with the recent media coverage, I am wondering if the issue is broader and could be part of the unintended acceleration issue?.

24 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 04/15/2009

The gas pedal on our 2003 Toyota Avalon began sticking when car was 5 years old. It was most noticeable when the car was stopped and we wanted to begin moving. It became hard to depress until a good bit of pressure, and then the car would lurch forward or backward very quickly. We tried lubricating the pedal mechanism but that didn't work. The dealer said they fixed it at our 100,000 mile check but it still stuck. The recent problem with Toyota gas pedals may have been around a lot longer than thought.

25 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 03/10/2009

2006 Toyota Avalon transmission hesitates at 0-35 mph, especially in stop and go traffic. It has nearly caused accidents. I need help because Toyota is not acknowledging this problem. This is a big safety issue.

26 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 12/17/2008

I was parking my car at work. I pulled into the parking space and backed up slightly to straighten my car. When I put the car into drive to pull forward again , the car raced forward with engine revving strongly. I could not stop the car with the brake. The car crashed and pushed through a thick brick wall. The airbags did not deploy. The car would only stop after I pushed the engine shutoff button. The gearshift was hard to move after the incident.

27 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 09/06/2008

When car is in neutral and moving forward you can accidentally move the gear shifter to reverse , without stopping the car first or applying the brakes .

28 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 03/06/2008

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Avalon. When depressing the accelerator pedal from a dead stop, the engine idles and the vehicle does not respond. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed that the failure was possibly due to the emission control. When the contact took the vehicle to a different Toyota dealer, they stated that the failure may be due to the transmission. The failure does not occur when traveling uphill. The current and failure mileages were 23,000. Updated 03-25-08 the consumer stated at low speeds the engine revs and after informing the dealer he was informing NHTSA the dealer found a fix for the defect. The consumer stated still shifts unevenly. Updated 03/25/08.

29 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 02/28/2008

Purchased a 2008 Toyota Avalon limited. Discovered this car's engine can be shut off with the automatic transmission not in park allowing the car to roll freely. In my opinion this is a safety hazard . This problem is compounded now with the new push button on/off switch used to control the motor. I found this to be the case when I accidentally pushed the start/stop engine switch with the transmission not in park stopping the engine. The car started to free roll in the garage. This is compounded by the poor steering and braking action response when the engine is not running. I can not see why Toyota did not install an interlock switch to ensure the engine could neither be started nor stopped unless the automatic transmission was in park? am I missing something? thanks for your consideration in this matter.

30 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 01/19/2008

The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Avalon. The contact stated that the vehicle's rpms radically increased and a loud revving noise was heard. The failure is more noticeable after accelerating from an idle position. The failure is intermittent and there are no warning lights illuminated prior to the failure. She took the vehicle to the dealer and a representative stated that this was a normal characteristic of the vehicle. The manufacturer would not assist. There was no correlation between the speed and the failure. The failure mileage was 19.

31 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 10/15/2007

When entering traffic from the on ramp and with plenty of time under normal conditions my Toyota Avalon, upon acceleration the engine actually cut out I mean with a serious hesitation that I could not respond to in time. The auto quickly approaching my rear veered into the next lane causing the third car to run off on the shoulder of the road. This is indeed a highly safety problem. I escaped without a scratch to myself or car. This has happened many times before but not to this extent. I took my car back to thompsons Toyota in placerville CA 3 times for the same problem and each time they tell me they can't find anything wrong with the acceleration. I have about 10,000 miles on the car now but the problem surfaced less than a week after I bought it. What are my options I need the car and I must drive this safety affected product. The car is ok after you get to 60 mph. On acceleration from a stop position a 4 cyl. Corolla and Honda can perform better, in fact I have a tacoma Toyota 4 cyl 1999 with 100,000 mile that also accelerates better than my Avalon.

32 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 09/22/2007

I was driving slowly around a rotary, and took my foot off accelerator to drift a bit to allow a preceding car to enter. When I pressed the gas pedal gently, there was a sudden violent kick which frightened both me and my wife. (I believe the transmission had shifted in low, but it was as if we had been hit in the rear with a large slapping hand!) I had to react quickly to avoid being driven into the car ahead by this sudden small burst of speed. An accident could easily have otherwise taken place. The transmission has always been erratic at times since we purchased the car, but this was the worst thing that has happened. I have had the latest computer upgrade on this problem installed, and it was within 1 day after that this took place. I had read all of the NHTSA safety reports on this car, and there have been many similar. In my mind there is a serious safety problem which needs addressing. (a similar but much less violent series of incidents have occurred when in cruise control going somewhat uphill, when it downshifts and the car speeds up noticeably and in some cases so much so that I have to take it out of cruise for a bit) such unpredictability makes both my wife and I feel unsafe in this car at those times.

33 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 06/20/2007

Transmission hesitation when accelerating from a braking situation. Transmission delay impairing ability to merge or safely change lanes. Repeated occurrences since may 2006. Car is once again in shop for inspection.

34 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 06/18/2007

Sudden acceleration when resume depressed from cruise and when laser beam returns from being enacted. The acceleration is sudden and neck-snapping. I no longer use laser but always use 'normal ' cruise since I had vehicle tested at bert wolfe Toyota, charleston wv and they advised that vehicle was performing normal. I return to 'set speed ' manually since that time. I have notified Toyota headquarters in California early in Feb. 2010 and have no reply. There is definitely an electronic problem. The consumer stated the vehicle has electrical and computer problems. Updated ivoq 06/02/jb.

35 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 05/07/2007

Whenever I attempt to accelerate ,such as entering a highway from an on ramp the transmission will hesitate for a few seconds before speeding up. I understand other owners have also complained and Toyota made corrections could not find it in your database.
