36 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 03/15/2007

I' had continuous problems since the first day of ownership, April 2006 with the transmission/linkage slipping/not engaging at slow speeds. It was particularly noticeable when making turns, but also occurs when slowing down, and then attempting to speed up. Attempts to have the problem repaired by the dealership have been unsuccessful; they refuse to acknowledge that there is even a problem!.

37 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 03/14/2007

2006 Toyota Avalon. At low speeds, especially after slowing, the transmission acts as if it were in neutral, and severely hesitates, when an attempt is made to accelerate. Dealer says it's normal. There are years of complaints all over the web. I can't believe that some have not been rear-ended or struck when attempting to accelerate into traffic from a highway entrance ramp. Toyota should be forced to redo the programming of the responsible computer chip or replace the chip with one that has a faster clock speed. They should also be held legally responsible for all incidents. The date below is for the latest of near daily, usually minor failures like slowing to turn a corner.

43 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 09/01/2006

The transmission acts erratically at low speeds. If I am rolling through a stop sign or just in traffics at 5-10 mph the transmission will "hunt" for a gear. Sometimes it is a hesitation and sometimes it jerks into gear, depends on how much trottle you apply. If I am stop turn right on red, have plenty of time to make a turn before an approaching car arrives, if the transmission is hunting for a gear, I have no control of the car. It might be only for 1 or 2 seconds, but it is dangerous. Repeated service trips, service manangers and even district manager has failed to get anyones' attention. . Read more...

44 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1997 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 07/06/2006

Car was bought used in 2006 with 115,000 miles. The key can be taken out of the ignition when the car is in any gear( rather than only when it is in park) . This creates a very dangerous situation due to the fact that the car could begin rolling once you leave the car. This has already happened once without any consequences, but could be very dangerous in the future.

45 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 06/23/2006

I was on my way to the dealer for an oil change and to have our new (picked-up 26 Jan 06) Toyota Avalon looked over as it had 3,500 miles. We live in the ozarks and of course it is very hilly. I normally use the "manual" mode on the automatic transmission to slow the car down as to descend the hills leading into and out of our sub-division. However, on 23 Jun I just left it in the regular automatic mode and used the brakes. When I saw there was no on-coming traffic, I stepped on the accelerator to go---the rpm's jumped to over 3,000 and then the car lurched forward. Thank goodness there was no on-coming traffic--I can only imagine what might have happened. I asked the dealer to check this occurrence out--they couldn't duplicate. Since the first incident I've had the same thing happen on 4 separate occasions--always when left in the automatic mode and after you've slowed down and then press the accelerator to go. . 46 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 04/21/2006

- the contact stated that every time he completed a turn in the 2006 Toyota Avalon ( with failure mileage: 5 miles at slow rate of speed under 20 mph, with the foot on the accelerator pedal the vehicle would not accelerate. Then, without any warning ,the transmission engaged and the vehicle jerked. The vehicle had been taken to the dealer, who stated that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle and could not duplicate the problem. The current mileage was 22,109.

47 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 04/17/2006

Transmission hesitates excessively when automatically downshifting at speeds below 10 mph. This has happened every day and every downshift from the first day of ownership. Terrible condition that no one at Toyota is willing to admit or fix. Wtf?.

48 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 03/28/2006

Bought the car from Aug 2005. The transmission problem is getting worse. Took few seconds to respond to downshift when step on the gas pedal, few times I almost got hit from behind because of that during heavy traffic.

49 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 03/18/2006

At times the engine speed does not increase when the accelerator pedal is depressed. Such as when I stop at a red light and then try to accelerate when the light turns green and at times when I try to pass another vehicle and I cannot increase speed or when I slow down and then try to accelerate the vehicle does not accelerate as it should.

50 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 03/12/2006

I have filed a complaint with Toyota regarding the hesitation and erratic shifting of our 2005 Avalon. I was told that it was due to the way the computer controls the new 5 speed transmission in conjunction with their electronic fuel injection control. In researching this problem,I have read where many other Avalon owners have also experienced this. On sun. ,03/12/06,I had just exited route 80 eastbound (exit 27) in n. J. And proceeded to merge with traffic on route 206 and had to immediately make a left turn. As I pressed on accelerator, the vehicle simply did not respond (hesitation) and, when it did engage after a second or two, lunged forward. This startled all in the car (myself and 2 passengers) and was a very unsafe occurrence as traffic was heavy and moving fast. The vehicle has approx. 7500 miles on it and will be a year old in June,2006. I have an appointment for service with my dealership on tues. ,03/21. They are to go over the car and check to see if there are any tech. Service bulletins. I have been checking on existence of TSB since shortly after buying the vehicle. I am not optimistic. This is a serious problem and Toyota should be doing something about it! thank you.

51 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 02/22/2006

: the contact stated while depressing the accelerator pedal, the transmission momentarily hesitates before properly selecting the correct gear to engage. This occurred at speeds of 5 mph and above. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times for inspection. The dealer determined the electronic transmission software needed replaced. However, the manufacturer did not have aftermarket software available and no repairs were made. Updated 03/17/06.

52 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 01/18/2006

I purchased a 2006 Toyota Avalon on 24 Dec 2005. On a number of occasions when I come to a stop, no matter what the speed is the rpm will rev up to about 2000 rpm. I have a very hard time stopping the car. It is a very scary situation & dangerous position I am in. This does not happen every time I drive the car. My wife is afraid to drive it now. I took it to the dealer & they could not find anything wrong with the car. What are my options?.

53 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 01/02/2006

Since purchasing in Dec. , 2005, transmission hesitates when proceeding from idle at slow speeds and sometimes between gears at highway speed when trying to accelerate. Have nearly been rear-ended innumerable times. Original several complaints to dealer resulted in info that "no TSB has been issued to fix that". This last time I complained, I was told that it was natural feature of drive-by-wire, that no TSB had been issued which fixed it, and that Toyota was not going to do anything about this known problem.

54 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 12/10/2005

I'm an owner of a 2006 Toyota Avalon and I'm curious if the electronic transmission has been investigated as a cause of the accelerator issue? I purchased this car as a new car and within 2 weeks I returned o the dealer to have the transmission checked. At this point it lagged when downshifting or seemed to be continuously searching for the appropriate gear. I was told that he computer had to learn our driving style and the issue would go away. It has never gone away, and it seems to have gotten worse over time. I have 60,000 miles on this car.

55 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 11/30/2005

Toyota 2006 Avalon I recently bought a Toyota Avalon. It now has 3800 miles on it. In the second week after the purchase, I was driving on a ramp to enter a limited access high way. Speed was about 50 mph as I blended in with the flow of traffic. The lane I was in started to slow down and the lane to my left had an open space. I pressed on the accelerator to gain speed and turned the steering wheel toward the left lane. The car, instead of accelerating, appeared to go into neutral, the tachometer reached almost 7000 rpm, then the transmission shifted into the passing gear and leaped forward. I almost hit the rear end of the car in front of me, but since my car had slowed down a little I was able to steer around and get into the left lane. I have gone into this detailed explanation to demonstrate the danger, and potential terrible accident at 50mph that the ã‚??built inã‚?? hesitation of the 2006 Toyota Avalon could have caused. After this experience, I went back to the dealer, got the explanation that the hesitation was normal for 2006 Toyota and nothing could be done about it. I told the dealer I did not want the car and wanted my money back. Of course that was refused. So iã‚??m still driving a car I think is dangerous. I thinktoyota should make a retro fit to correct the hesitation problem.

56 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1997 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 11/07/2005

My spouse had driven our 1997 Toyota Avalon to our dentists office for a scheduled appointment. She pulled into the parking lot and turned off the engine ignition switch and removed the key. While she was gathering her personal items to take into the dentists office with her she failed to notice that the gearshift selector was still in the drive position. (according to a Toyota service manager and manufacturer rep. The key should not have been able to remove until the gear selector was placed in the park position and the key turned to the off and locked position. ) while my spouse was in the deniists office, at some point in time our Avalon to begin to roll across the parking lot and crashed into the front doors of a blockbuster video store. Fortunately no one was injured. We have checked the ignition switch and gear selector in all positions on the selector console and the key will shut off the engine and can be removed from the ignition switch. We have never experienced this with the Avalon before or with any other vehicles we have owned.

57 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 07/01/2005

The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Avalon. While driving at approximately 4 mph, the vehicle began to independently change gears and jerk violently. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer for unrelated maintenance and advised the dealer of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired for the failure. The failure persisted and became progressively worse. He contacted the dealer and secured an appointment for diagnostic testing and possible repairs. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 600 and the current mileage was 21,500.

58 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 05/18/2005

I just purchased 2005 Toyota Avalon limited. I experience terrible transmission hesitation/slippage. It is getting dangerous when I have to enter highway ramp because of transmission hesitation. When I coast at low speed, for example, I notice a red traffic light ahead and take my foot off the gas, the car then continues forward as if in gear and after a period of time it feels as if the transmission shifts to neutral, the rpms drop to below 1,000. Then the traffic light changes when my speed is about 5 - 10 mph and I slowly depress the accelerator. The engine rpms increase about 300 - 500 rpms but there is no acceleration. Then the transmission gets the message and we start to accelerate.

59 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 11/15/2003

Car accelerated on its own put on brakes and put in neutral has not done that again when I went to Toyota to report incident was brushed of have never felt safe in this car since.

60 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1996 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 08/31/2003

I bought a used 1996 Toyota Avalon. It was covered under 6 year / 100,000 mile warranty. The warranty expired in March of 2002. I now have just over 100,000 miles on it. When putting the auto transmission in reverse from park or neutral the transmission engages violently. Although it does not "bark" the tires, it is quite severe. My local dealership said that the transmission valve body gasket(s) were the likely cause and they had my car from 9-3-03 to 9-5-03 replacing them. They said that a TSB had been issued detailing the replacement of these gaskets, but no recall has yet been issued. Toyota engineers changed the design of the lower valve body gasket in 1997 (tc00197 Apr 1997) because of this. There is a possibility that the direct clutch portion of the transmission could be damaged due to the cross leak from the gasket. My question is- why did Toyota not recall these cars because of this? two valve body gaskets are less than $30. 00 (Toyota prices). I am not sure if the new gaskets will interchange due to construction of the valve body, bore, etc. All I know is that the local Toyota dealer replaced these gaskets and I have the same problem that I did originally. The local dealer was great to work with (they charged me no labor because they did not fix the original problem). I am now stuck with a car that I have put roughly 60,000 miles on since paying over $20,000. 00 for it (before trade-in) in 1999. I can't trade or sell this car untill I get the transmission fixed ( install a new or rebuilt unit). The cost of a rebuilt transmission and installation would likely be over 30% of the cars current value.

61 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1997 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 02/01/2003

Failure of powertrain at 48,000 miles.

62 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1998 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 12/31/2002

While my usual mechanic was performing preventive maintenance on the automatic transmission at 64,500 miles, he discovered a large, bent bolt in the transmission fluid pan which was not there when the transmission was last serviced at 39,000 miles. He did not note any metal shavings, etc. And the car runs fine. He was not able to determine where the bolt came from. However, this is an obvious concern and I would like to know what Toyota has to say about it and whether it is likely to cause a transmission problem or failure.

68 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1999 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 05/31/1999

Problem 1: the car shifts poorly when you let off the gas and then accelerate or do a rolling stop. Toyota's field technical specialist, ron wytock said that those driving situations produced a 2 gear downshift when it shouldn't but that was normal and not repairable. Problem 2: the car has a very nasty, acrid odor, that gives us headaches and makes us nauseous when we drive it. We have taken the car in more than 4 times in attempts to get it repaired, but the smell is still there. We are concerned because the smell makes us ill: we are concerned the car may catch fire; and we are concerned car components may fail while we are driving. Toyota has guessed at several causes of the smell, but now says the smell is normal and not a cause of concern.

69 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1999 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 01/07/1999

Obviously the car had been leaking every since we took delivery. The had to take the transmission out to make the repair. This is a brand new car and the will not take it back. I no longer have the faith or trust in the vehicle. I have checked the lemon law . Could this problem cause a fire? what are my rights? I have contacted Toyota corp.

70 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1996 Toyota Avalon
