1 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2003 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 04/13/2018

I drove into a parking spot, put my car into park & released my foot from the brake. The car rolled back as if it was in reverse. I applied the brakes, shifted the gear into drive & drove back up into the space. I put the car back into park, released the brakes, only to have the car roll back again. I pulled back up into the parking spot, shifted back into park & this time put on parking brakes. I got out of the car & went into the store. When I came back, my car would not start. Not only would it not start, it would not make any sort of noise (which is how I knew it wasn't the battery). I called for a tow & the tow truck operator was able to get it to start in gear neutral.

2 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2007 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 04/12/2015

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Avalon. While driving approximately 30 mph, there was a loud noise coming from the undercarriage of the vehicle. The contact looked in the rearview mirror and noticed parts detaching from the vehicle. The contact merged over and retrieved the parts that were from the transmission. The vehicle was driven home very slowly. When parked, the vehicle would not shift into reverse. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 127,000.

4 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 10/05/2006

I bought a 2006 Toyota Avalon in sept. '06. There is a serious problem with the transmission. At slow speeds the transmission slips. If I am slowing almost to a stop and then starting up again the transmission does not engage, the engine revs up, and then the car lurches forward as the transmission finally engages. We have almost been rear ended when another car is following close and thinks that I am going to move forward but can't because the transmission does not engage. I have almost had an accident because the car lurches forward after the trans slips. I also have to wait for a very large gap in traffic if I'm crossing a lane to make a left turn as I never know if the transmission will slip leaving me in the on-coming lane of traffic. We have had this lurching and slipping incident approximately 60% of the time. On two occasions when reaching speeds that would be shifting from 2nd to 3rd a very loud banging noise and lurching occurred. Unfortunately, on two visits to the dealer I was not able to recreate the problem.
