36 Wiper problem of the 2011 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 11/28/2018

The rear sunshade is stuck in the upright position without being activated and does not go down when the car in put in reverse. This is a very dangerous and potentially fatal situation at night when visibility is poor. There are a plethora of complaints about the sunshade on the internet. When I asked the dealership how much it would cost to repair, they only replace the device for $1000, and the defective sunshade even after replacement could repeat the hazardous situation. Toyota should replace the defective, hazardous part at no cost. It is a threat to safety for all passengers. The defect occurred randomly without provocation upon startup with the car parked. A grinding noise was heard, then the shade went up - unresponsive to the activating/deactivation control button. I had to drive in the slow lane due to poor visibility.

38 Wiper problem of the 2008 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 07/10/2018

The dashboard gets sticky on sunny days and the surface becomes shiney which then reflects off the windshield. The reflection (on the windshield) significantly obstructs drivers view of oncoming traffic or pedestrians on sunny days. Driver is blinded or it is impossible to see through the reflection. This is a dangerous condition and a significant safety issue for the car owner and the public (accident can affect other vehicles, property, or pedestrians) that needs addressed as a permanent solution by Toyota corporation for all affected vehicles on the road. The vehicles are in motion and stationary when this occurs. Any recall should be extended by Toyota to all vehicles having this condition that are currently driven and not limited to any arbitrary date of coverage. Dashboard replacement by Toyota corporation is currently known to be the only solution.

42 Wiper problem of the 2011 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 01/22/2018

The rear sunshade is broken and won't down when I put the car in reverse like it's supposed to. The shade limits my visibility. It's so bad that I try not to drive at night or during fog or rain because I can't see at all then. The dealer tells me that this is a common problem but, my warranty doesn't cover it. I can't afford to have this fixed or even checked out. I need some help with this.

44 Wiper problem of the 2012 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 10/01/2017

Rear deck sunscreen activates and comes up without operator activating it. And it will not go back down without manual assistance. With assistance when it does go down there is a loud grinding noise and then it will come back up. To correct this situation requires replacement of complete assembly. (dealer quoted $1674. 86) or pull the fuse and deactivate the rear sunscreen. Safety issue is that sunscreen up at night or during inclement weather restricts rear vision and driver can't do anything about it unless he happens to know which fuse to pull and where it is located. When asked why Toyota has not corrected this issue, dealer speculated that since this is an Avalon only problem that the numbers of failures are likely small. My response was, that may be true but by researching this issue on the internet, it has been a problem since at least the mid 1990's until at least 2013 and probably beyond and Toyota has not recalled or fixed the problem so far as I can tell. Regards our specific car a 2012 Avalon, it is a feature almost never used and as of this date the car has less than 18000 miles on it. Mileage and age seems not to be a factor in the failures. It seems more likely a poor design of the feature itself. As far as when it happens and where, it can happen anytime the car is running, in the driveway or while driving. .

45 Wiper problem of the 2011 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 05/27/2017

Vehicle sunshade will not stay retracted. It will seat after lots of noise and gyrations from the electric motor. However, once reverse is engaged again, it grinds some more until it gets seated. There is no way to disengage: works whether you want it to or not. Other than the annoyance is that last night it stayed up on a long trip in rainy, foggy weather. We could see nothing behind us - completely blocked. Also, I am having some heart issues and the loud, abrupt noise is not appreciated every time the sunshade goes down and tries to see (very loud!). Cost $57. 75 at the dealer to disable this device in the down position (see attached receipt). This should be a safety recall - I note online that this is a common problem on several model years of the Avalon.

46 Wiper problem of the 2002 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 02/04/2017

1)steering-when trying to go straight car will tilt to the left, have to keep wheel at weird angle to maintain a straight line. 2)accelerator sticks accelerator seems stiff and sticky and causes car to lurch when starting from a stop -was making left turn through intersection on a city street February 4th and accelerator stuck until it was pumped, increasing my speed. Was terrifying. 3)rust ridden roters and break anti-rust covers not working at all 4)visibility-windshield's seal seems defective-VIN number not visible due to condensation building in lower corner, windshield fogs up profusely and stays that way even with defroster making it difficult to see out of front windshield 5)heater-blows cooled air (not room temp) instead of warm when turned on, seems like computer error in thermostate/temperature gage 6)side windows shake/studder when rolled up or down.

47 Wiper problem of the 2013 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 12/09/2016

Headliner at top of rear glass is drooping where the headliner meets, and has developed a crease at a point in the center, restricting visibility out of the rear window. It is a defect and the dealer (northtown Toyota - amherst, NY) will not replace/repair as car is out of warranty. Contacted Toyota to address the problem, and they have not responded.

48 Wiper problem of the 2008 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 11/13/2016

The rear window sunshade comes up uncontrollably and will not go down. I was driving at night and the sunscreen came up blocking my view of cars behind me and was extremely distracting. The system malfunctions and there is no way to get the shade down.

49 Wiper problem of the 2013 Toyota Avalon

52 Wiper problem of the 2003 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 03/30/2016

Window wiper motor needs to be replaced. On March 30 , 2016, the dealer ordered the part and made us pay$342. 00 dealer has repeatedly delayed and finally told us to call Toyota. We did. Toyota said they stopped making the part but had to start again because so many wiper motors failed. Now they are out of them again and don't know when they will get them in. My daughter is driving this car with no windshield wiper service and has a child to drive to school. Toyota suggested we rent a car but would not help pay for it. They said they only help special customers with rentals but I don't know how to qualify. We have a dangerous situation and jay (who wouldn't give his last name)at Toyota was flippant and said we had an old car. His number is 18003314331 exr 73810 case number1605262291 in name of stacey grabel and he was not only no help but nasty as well. I don't know where to turn to get this part or a delivery date and according to jay, many other Toyota owners have had this same problem. I hope you can help us so we can get Toyota to take some action mike grabel for stacey grabel.

54 Wiper problem of the 2010 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 11/09/2015

Rear window shade would not retract. Driving at night it was difficult to see out rear window due to shade being stuck in raised position. Toyota wanted $1,500 repair it, but the parts were not available and per their employee, it had been back ordered three times. This indicated to him a manufacturing problem.

55 Wiper problem of the 2015 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 09/08/2015

Rear window visibility is seriously hampered by interior reflection on inside of rear window. This vehicle has a light grey interior color and the back package tray and speaker covers are also light grey. This light grey color is reflected on the inside of the rear window glass. When looking out the rear window using the inside rear view mirror, the rear window looks as if it is extremely dirty or fogged. The condition is worse when subjected to sunlight. At present, while awaiting if/when a repair/modification will to be made by the selling dealer, I have laid a black towel on the package shelf as a temporary repair. The black towel has virtually eliminated the reflection and provides clear rearward visibility. Toyota is aware of this vehicle's condition and the dealer has forwarded pictures to Toyota showing the extent of the visibility impairment. Unfortunately, any other Avalon with a light color interior will have the same defect.

56 Wiper problem of the 2010 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 08/17/2015

Rear sunshade is stuck in the up position. It is difficult to see out of the back window. I know may Avalons have this same problem. The cost to fix it is far beyond reason.

57 Wiper problem of the 2008 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 01/27/2015

Dashboard is sticky and shiny. The sheen on the dash also creates a glare on sunny days, which creates a safety hazard. Toyota is avoiding a recall for the use of inferior parts.

58 Wiper problem of the 2013 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 11/15/2014

Rear window sunscreen (dark black) stuck in the up position. Poor visibility during night driving with the curtain stuck in the upright position. This has always had this problem and Toyota has not solution.

59 Wiper problem of the 2013 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 08/24/2014

While driving the vehicle at approximately 45 mph on a clear sunny day the windshield wipers turned on and began to operate at full speed and would not respond at attempts to stop them. The horn started going off with alarm noises in the vehicle. The smell of an electrical odor and white smoke began to enter the cabin through the dash. Attempts to pull the vehicle over were prevented as the steering wheel locked. The brakes would not respond or work despite stepping on them with both feet and attempting to pump them. The vehicle was still traveling on the road and down a hill with no electrical, steering, or power function of the vehicle. As the vehicle slowed the passenger jumped out. Fire began to come through the dash and upon the driver opening his door fire also came into the cabin from beneath the vehicle. The driver jumped out just before the vehicle careened down an embankment and exploded 3 times.

60 Wiper problem of the 2014 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 06/27/2014

While driving south on a city street midday, in sunny clear conditions, suddenly experienced the suns glare from at least 3 spots on shiny chrome covered dashboard all at same time, from different spots, blinding and distracting me and almost making me run a red light since I could barely see. It was like 3 suns in my face. Chrome is mirror like, quite thick, and at an angle that causes sun to reflect straight into your eyes when it's midday and the sun shines down through windshield from overhead. I had to break hard when I noticed light was red at the last minute. Almost caused me to run the red light.

61 Wiper problem of the 2014 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 06/14/2014

Vehicle dashboard chrome accents reflect the sun at mid-day like a mirror, blinding the driver. This happened to me today while driving. This makes the vehicle undriveable for nearly 2 hours each day. There are many similar reports online, including this one from a professional reviewer: " although the chrome used is “smoked” to lessen brightness, matte aluminum would have improved the overall ambiance immensely. At one point, I was actually blinded by dazzling reflections off the bezel of the instrument cluster. . Read more...

62 Wiper problem of the 2014 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 06/03/2014

Few days after purchasing brand new 2014 Toyota Avalon, noticed a highly intense mirror like reflection of the sun coming off the very thick shiny polished chrome in the dashboard that surrounds the instrument cluster and the ac vents in the center. 3 spots in the dash where I get severe glare. It happens usually midday when it's sunny outside and sun is overhead. The blinding light is so bad I must put my hand in a position to obstruct the view from my eyes. I am scared this may distract me from driving and cause an accident, or even cause injury to my vision and permanently blind me. Please help. Took vehicle to dealer complaining about it 6/10/14. They said they will look into it. I see complaints from 2013. Why hasn't anything been done about this? how can they build a car like this and continue selling it this way? I am scared to drive this car with the thick polished chrome in the dash.

64 Wiper problem of the 2008 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 11/01/2013

I was driving in a rural area in illinois where we have a lot of deer, so I flipped on my high beams for better visibility. I had purchased the car with 87,000 miles on it that summer and may not have even used them yet. The high beams stayed on for a few seconds and then flashed and went back to low beam. I checked them upon arriving home and could see that they shattered. I replaced these with bulbs from o'reilly auto - using gloves to avoid touching them - these high beams were seldom used but worked. It is now November of 2014 and these also failed; did not shatter but failed to illuminate. I assume they are burned out. I am concerned that I may never be able to use the high beams for safety on this otherwise fantastic car. I have avoided using the high beams ever since I replaced them the first time, so I am not sure when they actually quit working this time.

65 Wiper problem of the 2013 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 10/17/2013

I am writing about my 2013 Toyota Avalon, there is one really bad design flaw!!! the accent chrome around the controls and air conditioner vents reflect the sunlight into the eyes of the driver and front passenger, and it is blinding. The blinding reflection may cause accidents and/or direct injury to the eyes such as retina, cornea damage as well as any other eye damage as a result of bright sunlight. I have tried the darkest/protective eyewear that I can purchase but the reflection still comes through blinding. I have also had the darkest window tent allowed by law installed (purchased at the dealership). I have contacted the dealership and Toyota directly but have had no offer for a solution. This is a simple to fix with a replacement piece of dash chrome in a non-reflective color such as a flat black, wood-grain, or brushed metal color. A custom designed dash area shade should also offer a solution. I have verified that there have been many other complaints through an internet search.

66 Wiper problem of the 2008 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 09/01/2013

When driving, my car has the drl option that utilizes the high beams at a lower voltage during the day. About a couple weeks ago I noticed that my high beams seemed to not be working which is very odd for both bulbs to be out at the exact same time. Sometimes, I need my high beams on dark curvy roads in the area that I live in. I called my dealership(capital Toyota) about it and of course they swept it under the rug "we havent heard of that before" the service writer was gratious enought to give me a Toyota corp. Number 18003314331. So I called and through a couple holds they proceeded to tell me that due to "legal" (you would think that they would be concerned "legally" that owners are having issues seeing at night due to an substandard parts)resonsibilities they would not cover my car in what they are calling an extended warranty soley for the headlight issue they are fully aware of. They said the warranty was for 5 years from the date the vehicle was put into service. My car is one month past said date. Keep in mind that I purchased this car in early June '13. So I was not aware nor did I receive any sort of notification that there was anything that needed to be done or it would have. In fact when I purchased this vehicle I called my local dealership to see if it needed to be caught up on any recall's/TSB's and they said "no". This is a big safety issue that needs to be brought to the national recall level of service if Toyota does not see the need in fixing something beyond my control. From what I understand about the issue, simply replacing the highbeam/drl's will not fix the issue. Not to metion the fact that I could receive a ticket by the police for my high beams not working properly. Please keep me informed of any forthcoming information.

67 Wiper problem of the 2008 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 08/19/2013

Rear sunshade stuck in the up position and will not go down automatically, reduces visibility.

68 Wiper problem of the 2013 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 08/09/2013

Very upset Toyota customer, purchased showroom 2013 Toyota Avalon with headliner in the rear drooped down. This is brand new. . . I was told that probably some kids have pulled the headliner down while in showroom. Waiting for resolution I decided to read on common problems and lone behold! Toyota, you had better get this fixed immediately before there is an accident due to headliner obstructing the drivers view. How fast this is resolved is going to determine how I speak about Toyota and future purchases! get after it! next up, seat back covers also was blammed on kids in showroom pulling them down. I looked at the design and see how sorry the engineering is. Toyota, need fix as soon as possible. . A good one! I will report this to the news if not rectified.

69 Wiper problem of the 2013 Toyota Avalon

The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure could not be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted about the failure. The failure mileage was 1,700.

70 Wiper problem of the 2013 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 07/02/2013

There is a glare in the rear window that tends to always have a negative effect on visibility. I have never seen anything like this in my 40 years of driving and owning over 20 vehicles. It seems the angle of the window combined with the light gray rear deck material creates the distracting reflection/glare. At first I thought it was the port installed tinting that caused the reflection, but now I am beginning to think it is a design flaw. Also, I see you need my name and personal information on this form and you are promising to keep it confidential and private. Now how can anyone trust any government agency these days to protect information when one of the main functions of our government seems to be spying on all the citizens and acting like the ussr circa 1960?.
