general problems of the 2008 Toyota Camry - part 1

We took ownership of the vehicle in March 2025. It wasn’t until then when we finally attempted driving it that I realized the dashboard had begun melting. It is shiny and sticky. The Camry was owned by my wife’s elderly parents. Her father was disabled and had stopped driving the car before passing and her mother has dementia. Neither of them were aware of the dashboard recall program or the warranty extension that ended in 2017. Had her father and mother notified us of the problem we would have had it taken care of under the time limit, but they didn't. They purchased it new and the vehicle was mostly garaged, with only 37,000 miles to date most of which were in the first 2 years they owned it. The melting dashboard creates dangerous glare reflecting onto the windshield making it difficult to see. This poses a significant safety hazard when driving on a sunny day, not only to us but to those driving near us, risking a multi-car accident. We have had several close calls while driving this car. This situation has placed us in a difficult position. I am [xxx] and [xxx], we rely on this vehicle for regular transportation to [xxx] and medical appointments. We live on a fixed income and are unable to afford the cost of dashboard replacement. Given these circumstances and the fact that we only recently became aware of the issue we want Toyota to do the right thing and replace the dashboard as they committed to do. The dashboard hasbeen cracking for some time. I have use leather oils & other products to reduce. Has slowly worsened.

Abs/vsc actuator pump failure and with the abs alarm on causing constant drain to the system needing jump every time or to disconnect 12v every time parked. Dealer diagnosed wrong last year stating 12v battery needed replacement. I did the $500. It did not fix the problem. Now dealer states actuator pump failure - replace/fix price approx $4,000. I asked for diagnostic readouts to prove to me that they have it right this time. (I'm over 50 hours into this abs failure) he refused and would not agree to refund my money if I would go ahead with their advised repair. My car has only 116,000 miles on it! I've checked around & it seems that my model should be part of recall/repair. I've gotten nothing written from Toyota when I have inquired in writing. Extremely dangerous, this failure!.

My dashboard is melting thus causing a glare which affects visability when driving.

2008 Toyota Camry dashboard melting Toyota advised csp letter sent 2011. I did not receive letter. Toyota advised csp extended until 2017. I was not advised by dealership. 2021 dashboard started getting sticky. I was advised that Toyota cannot replace as after the csp. If my dashboard would have melted between 2011 and 2017, I would have contacted Toyota. I am not able to pay the 2600 for a new dashboard. Toyota should have not put a dashboard into a vehicle that melts and causes a glare and noxious odor. I am looking for any assistance to help get this fixed by Toyota at no cost to myself. Texas has 103 to 110 degree heat this year. Thank you.

I have a very sticky dashboard which reflects a strong glare and blind my drive view very bad sometimes. I have encountered several cases in which I almost missed traffic lights and stop sign. It puts my in very dangerous driving. I called my Toyota dealer and was told that it will cost over $1500 to replace it. I wonder why Toyota didn't issue a recall on this issue.

My dash on my Toyota Camry has become sticky and shiny with a chemical smell. The visibility is blinding from a glare in bright days and also night driving makes visibility difficult. The chemical cannot be cleaned off and nothing helps with the glare the dash is causing.

My vehicle dashpad has suddenly begun to slowly melt and has become very sticky and shinny, the shininess causes a constant glare on the windshield, making it difficult and dangerous to drive especially during daylight hrs. I learned that there was a recall for this issues and contacted Toyota on 5/24/2021, and was told the recall for this issue expired in 2017, and there is nothing they will do for it now. I like to express that I purchased my vehicle in April of 2016, and was never notified of the recall, Toyota never sent me a letter informing me of the issue and I have taken my vehicle several time to the dealer for other repair/maintenance prior to 2017 and was not informed of the recall by by them during that time. My case # with Toyota is 210524000564. I have searched the internet and also found that is a concerned issued with many other Toyota car owners. My vehicle is a 2008 Toyota Camry hybrid.

My dashboard is becoming extremely sticky. It's becoming unsafe to drive when it's sunny out. There needs to be a recall. Has a lawsuit been filed yet for this manufacturer mistake?.

I have a 2008 Toyota Camry and the dashboard seems to be melting and making it hard to see on a sunny day. I have had the car for 4 years as it has gotten progressively worse. I was wondering how I can get the situation fixed as it is becoming dangerous for me to drive . What are my next steps as this has been a recall on my vehicle. Where can I get it fixed and how can I get this problem resolved?.

My dashboard is melting and is creating a very bad glare in sunlight or daytime operations. I called Toyota and they said there was an extended warranty but it's expired now.

Car has always been garage kept and use windshield cover when located outside. Noticed the dash was very sticky and shiny after the car had been sitting outside. Called the dealer to ask about the problem. They said that they knew of the problem but that my car was no longer covered by warranty or by the warranty extension. They recommended that I file a complaint with Toyota corporate. I filed a complaint with Toyota who said they would investigate. I got a call today stating that they would not cover the vehicle. Don'y know why they won't fix it since it is a known manufacturer's defect. They glare off the dash is so bad that it is difficult to see when driving. It's a real safety concern.

The dash has become very sticky. Not only is this bothersome as I can not lay anything on it without it sticking such as parking passes and such nor can I use a sin visor because part of it stuck to the dash but it is also a safety issue. The sticky melted dash causes a bad glare and you can't see very well out of the windshield.

Earlier this year I started noticing that the dashboard of my Toyota Camry 2008 has become sticky and shiny. Initially I thought it was because I didn't clean it. But as I tried to wipe and clean, it got worse because of the stickiness. It was only after I looked it up on google that I learned that dashboards should never become sticky and shiny in the first place. I never received any notice about my car being one of those models that have this issue.

The problem I am having with my 2008 Toyota Camry is that the dash is melting leaving a very shinny look to it. When the sun hits it reflects off the glass making it diffucult to see. At night the street lights and on comming traffice tighs also reflect making it difficult to see. Plus its very sticky and eveything that flys by dust lint hair will stick to my dash, very unappealing and dirty.

When backing out of a parking spot as the gear shift was put in reverse, the engine sped up rapidly, out of control and the car ended up about 200' to the rear through the parking lot, over 3 concrete bumps and ended up on a grassy area. No one was hurt - luckily. Was there not a recall by Toyota about ten years ago of 400,000 similar vehicles because the engines went racing out of control? many deaths and accidents attributed to it? my vehicle was not listed on your website as having an active recall.

The car was parked outside on the drive way and at 4am on 12/4/19 when I was about to go to work I realized the dashboard had exploded. No signs of a break in because the car was locked. I am not sure what happened but I have never had any issues since I got this car and out of a sudden the dashboard just explodes. What if this happened when I was driving? I am concern about all other owners of same year and model who are at risk of such explosion.

Vehicle noted to burn a tremendous amount of oil driving less than 1,200 miles. Contacted Toyota who indicated they did do an extension to fix the issue but I was too late. I never received the notification to learn they had an old address for me. I am now having to drive the vehicle cannot afford a new one and having to put oil in every 7-10 days.

The dashboard and sun visor are melting. The melted dashboard is gooey, dust, debris, and any insect lying there gets stuck. The melted dashboard, dust, debris, and insects reflect on the windshield and create glare making it difficult to see the road. Toyota response was that an extended warranty for the melting dashboard expired in 2017 and there was nothing they could do about the melting dashboard. We protected our dashboard from sun with a windshield sun screen always, so the problem took longer to occur. The sun visors plastic components melted and sun visor fell off the metal support. Under sun and glare have to use hand to block unmaking it difficult to steer car or see road. Toyota's response was to buy new sun visors.

The dashboard in my car, a 2008 Toyota Camry, has started to melt. It is sticky and discolored with a slight sheen. It may potentially melt to the point where it starts to reflect in the window.

Toyota has known about this problem for years. They also had knowledge regarding a recall and an extended warranty. Unfortunately, I was not made aware of their extended warranty until it was too late. This vehicle has the melting dash problem which has gotten to a "dangerous" level. The glare on the windshield makes it unsafe for drivers and pedestrians who may be in an area which causes them to be obscured. I know this car is older, but my son who is using this as a cheaper method of transportation doesn't drive it much. It only now has 95,000 miles on it and has always been well maintained. The local dealer gave me a price of $2,500. 00 to replace this dash. Also, in addition to the vision issue, I assume there will soon be problems with all the electronics contained in the dash area. I'm asking that the federal safety board force Toyota to do the right thing, since they have told me they will not stand behind the produce. One of their representatives told me that with my history ( 8 or 9 new vehicles since 1990), they may make an exception since their extended warranty expired. They declined my request.

Dash has become sticky and shiny producing a glare during bright driving conditions. Vehicle was only serviced by a Toyota dealership since purchased and this being an issue was never brought to our attention.

Dashboard is becoming extremely sticky and shiny. Nothing wipes it off, and its worse in warmer weather. Its shininess is becoming distracting while driving. I'm worried about this spreading to other parts connected to the dashboard, like ac and airbags. Called Toyota and they told me the warranty was up and it was the responsibility of the first owner of the vehicle to get it fixed. As the second owner (bought it used), I was never given any notice of complete coverage or repairs. No emails or letters.

Visors fall out and will not stay secured, allowing for sun to grt into eyes while driving. This is compounded by the fact that the dashboard is melting and very shiny. Common problems with this year and model. Recommend Toyota replace.

Excessive oil burning, I do have high mileage; odometer at oil change at hendrix Toyota on February 11, 2019 was 195,562. Today February 28, 2019 my odometer is at 196,162. I now have to add more oil to my car today, when only 17 days ago 5 quarts was added. I a afraid that I may not catch it in time to add oil, and the engine would lock up. The oil is really burning too fast.

My dashboard is melting from the sun. This is harmful to my help and this is the first car that I have ever owned that did this.

Just discovered my dash is sticky, has not yet progressed to shiny and Toyota's extended warranty ended 10-1-17. Only drive the car 6 months of the year, am the original owner and have 54266 miles. Spoke with Toyota customer experience center and was told that Toyota will not cover the $2000 cost to replace the defective dash. They made a defective product and should cover replacement cost no matter when it occurs. I never received the single letter they mailed in 2015. They always had my email and never notified me via email or sent out a follow letter.

Within the last month I and other such as mechanic, body shop operators have noticed sticky and gooey dashboard, melting and very soft, especially in the hot and humid weather. Have also noticed a glare on dashboard while driving. You can also put your fingernail thorough parts of the dashboard, very sticky and soft. Contacted Toyota at 800. 331. 4331 and was told that the warranty enhancement expired March 2018 and that they could not do anything since the warranty was expired . I have not experienced issues with the dashboard till this last month and was not aware of any issues concerning this part of the car. Nor did I receive anything which stated there was anything going on with the dashboard for this make or model.

Due to the Toyota sticky dash problem caused by material degradation, I am experiencing a safety situation when sunlight produces a glare off the shiny dash surface. The glare is at its worst when driving into the sun. Upon calling Toyota, they stated that their voluntary warranty extension period has ended and there is nothing they can do for me.

Sticky melting dashboard that throws off a blinding glare. Toyota will not replace my dashboard as time elapsed on a recall that I was unaware of. My dashboard reflection is dangerous and it blinds me when the sun reflects off it.

Abs lights comes on, brakes lights come on, check engine light, the milage hand stop working and the air wont get cold when this happens.

The dashboard of the car is melting and has become very shiny causing a glare on the windshield that partially obscures the view of the road, particularly when there is bright sunshine. Toyota already acknowledges the safety issue and extended the warranty on the dashboard to 10 years. My car (purchased new) did not exhibit the melting issue until after we moved it from northern states, MD and mi to FL starting in Jan 2016. The failure only apparent after the extended warranty or 10 years expired in oct 2017. The reflection of the dashboard upper surface on window is highly distracting and significantly obscures vision of the road.
