While driving down a hill when I applied brakes towards bottom of hill and front brakes began to vibrate and caused front end to shimmy.
2002 Toyota Camry brake failure. I was traveling approximately 50 miles an hour when a car entered the lane two cars ahead of me. As they stepped on their brakes, I also did. Only my brakes did not engage properly and the car started to skid out of control. The conditions were dry. I was struck by another car - causing extensive damage to my right front section of the car. I called the Toyota body shop today who told me that they found no problem in the abs system. I will not drive this car again until I am absolutely sure they discover why my brakes failed to engage.

Our 2003 leased Toyota Camry has been great for the first year. We currently have approx 5600 miles on the car. During January and February of this year we experienced two separate abs (antiskid brake system) activations. In both incidents the car was on dry, clean, hard surfaced roads. There was no gravel, dirt, ice, etc or any foreign matter on the roads. The roads were also dry. No rain was falling. In both incidents the car was gong less than 30 mph and in both cases the car was descending a slight hill. When the operator applied brakes the abs system activated and no amount of brake peddle pressure changed the stopping ability of the car. Kickback thru the brake peddle was felt by me. The stopping distance was increased dramatically. In the first incident my wife was alone in the car and coming down a hill to a stop light. She could not stop the car before the light and had to make a hard right hand turn to prevent hitting cars or being hit by cars that were going 45+ mph on their road thru the light. At the intersection. Fortunately there had been a break in traffic so when she turned right at the red light there was a break in traffic so theree was no impact. In my situation I was driving my wife to a shopping center and was also coming down a slight hill and coming up behind traffic which was stopping at a stop sign. I could not stop the vehicle. I was getting kickback thru the brade peddle and the car brakes were cycling on and off and thus I had to swing around the car ahead and onto the righthand shoulder to avoid hitting the car ahead and almost had to climb an embackment to regain control of the vehicle. Immediately after my incident, the later of the two incidents, we drove right to our Toyota leasing agency and turned the car over to the maintenance department. Toyota got us a rental vehicle while they check the car out. So far they have told me that in checking the abs computer it shows no fault codes.
1. We purchased a new 2004 Toyota Camry xle from beaverton Toyota (beaverton, oregon)
2. Here are the three problems:
a. When going down a hill, on dry pavement, with the brakes being "feathered", with no additional foot pedal pressure, the brakes suddenly engage and the brake pedal pushes back on the drivers foot. B. After braking and then accelerating, the brakes do not release after the brake pedal has been released. This causes the engine to hesitate until the brakes release. This happens especially in heavy stop and go traffic. C. With very little pressure on the accelerator, the engine hesitates which causes the transmission to downshift multiple times running the rpms up to the redline. 3. I have reported these problems to beaverton Toyota service department multiple times and the hillsboro (oregon) Toyota service department one time. They admit there are problems, but since Toyota has not issued a "service bulletin" they can do nothing to fix the problems. I have driven another 2004 Camry at the hillsboro Toyota dealership and none of the problems listed above occurred.

Camry 2003 brake failure. Brake pedal froze when driving and would not press down at all. Frantically, while driving between 25 mph and 30 mph, after approximately 1500 feet, the pedal went down after repeated attempts to get the pedal down. (I had the car towed to the dealer and they could not recreate the problem and tested the brakes. Though the brakes showed that they were functioning correctly, the problem was that the brakes failed due to the brake pedal completely freezing. I had to continually try to push the pedal down and frantically warned my children in the car that the pedal was stuck and wouldn't budge, that I lost the brakes. Luckily there wasn't anyone else on the road because it was at least 1500 feet before the pedal eventually went down, with tight hesitation).
While driving vehicle shut off and brakes failed. Dealer notified.

Three times consumer went to Toyota to tell them that something was wrong with my brakes. The first time, (may 3,03) was braking slowly and 2002 Camry jumped ahead, the brakes did not work. The second time(may 28,03) I consumerwent in, told them brake pedal went slowly down to the floor when stopping for a light. 1993 Camry never did that. Also no ohter car I had did that. They tested, said nothing was wrong. The third timeon July 3, consumertold them, do not tell me nothing was wrong with brakes, did not want to hear it! he drove the car and said nothing was wrong. Now on July 11, 2003, while parked at macy's mall at cross county, I am backing up slowly out of my space, and all of a sudden, consumer's vehicle jumped ahead flying and hit two parked cars facing her. All the vehicles had damage. Consumer will never drive that car again, could have killed someone.

01/2001 - 03/2001 4 wheel abs. Intermittent occurrence of the following: abs functioning or brakes operating when brake pedal is not depressed. Notice while driving on highway, car starts to vibrate excessively from unneeded braking. The problem goes away as driving continues. After 1 incident took car to a repair station because I needed to apply the gas pedal to go down hill to keep car going at speed limit (where usually car will roll at speed limit). Car put on racks and found brakes were extremely hot. All wheels could not be hand turned. After brakes cooled problem was able to drive car normally. Had 4 occurrences of this in last 3 months. Took car to dealer and problem did not occur. Dealer said there was no sense is taking things apart when there were no symptoms. 03/2001 took car back to dealer 3 weeks later. Latest experience was that brakes were now failing. Pedal went low when applying brakes. Dealer said brake fluid was contamintated and warranty is now void. Dealer mentioned that 1 week earlier another car came in with contaminated brake fluid. Dealer says that due to contamination, they need to replace almost entire braking system (calipers, lines, master, abs sensors) this was estimated at over $3,000. Told dealer to try and only flush brake fluid. He said could do this but they would also need to replace the master since brake pedal was going low. Dealer also said that they (Toyota) would not be responsible for any brake failure that occurred following this compromised repair alternative. Dealer called later and said front rotors also need to be replaced because they are beyond tolerance for resurfacing. Agreed to the change. (total cost of repairs: $1,000) 09/2001 the car operated fine for almost six months. Notice that at around the 60 mph range, vibration starts to occur. Appears to be the early symptoms of the abs starting to function without depressing brakes (again). Imo problem is the abs starting to function by itself. Problem stopped *.
While driving at a rate of approx. 35 mile per hour the brakes went down to the floor which resulted in a back end collison . The passenger seat belt and the air bags did bot work. Accident was repoted to police and insurance company. Inspector stated that the seatbelt and airbag was ok. The car is at the dealership having amaster cylinderrepalced, frozen calipers replaced and brake pads replaced because of uneven wear.
Brakes were shaking violently. Dealer said that it was because of the abs.

Car stalled on highway at 45 mph, steering and lights worked, stall caused collision-3 people hurt. The dealer does not know why car stalled. Car could not start until after a computer chip was replaced. But when car was running and we pulled the chip the car continued to run. No one knows why car stalled. The convertable top leaked water, brought to dealer back three times. But now the convertible top does not come up on windshield flush-brought back to dealer five times still working on it. The front brakes began squeaking and pulling at 5000 miles. This is my 4th new car never happened before.
When the brake pedal is applied in an emergency situation, it goes to the floor and causes a rumble, before it comes to a complete stop. Dealer has been contacted.
Anti-lock brake system.
Consumer states when the brakes are applied, in snowing weather car slippery, dealer has inspected the vehicle and change tires, and the problem is recurring . Please provide further information.
