Events leading up to the failure were normal use of car doors. Inside door handles of front passenger and back passenger doors cracked and one completely fell off. Door handles broke on separate occasions, but within a 1. 5 year time span as passengers were trying to get out of car (car was unlocked). As a result riders cannot let themselves out of the car. Only the driver door is still in working condition. Driver must "valet style" let passengers out of the car. Inside door handles need to be replaced.

The front passenger side door will not unlock with or without the remote or the key. No one can enter into the passenger seat.
For past 6 months my power door locks take turns not working. Sometimes they stop working in two at a time and remain broken for a couple of weeks. There are time when they will not even open manually(even from the inside). This is very scary in the event I need to get out and cannot because of the locks. It usually starts with the left front, then left front and rear, then left rear, left and right rear, then right rear, right rear and right front, then right front, then right and left front doors. Then they will all work fine for a month. It appears, to me, to be some type of short in the wiring.
Inside driver side door release handle broke off at spindle.
Interior door handles have broken during normal use. Could trap someone in car during an emergency. Dealer would only replace at full cost. Car is a 2002 Toyota Camry.

1999 Toyota Camry driver's door handle broke off on opening the door (without using excessive force). This could be a hazard if someone needed entrance to the car in an emergency. The handle is a surprisingly thin plastic. The Toyota mechanic told me it was a known problem. An independent repair shop said the same.
In 2001, when opening driver's door from outside with the door unlocked the flat part of the handle that is flush with the outer body of the door broke off from the remainder of the handle fixed into the door leaving a sharp piece of plastic on either side of the handle area that must be pried up to open the door. In the same week, the rear driver's side door did the same thing. I was told by the dealer/service department that "these plastics just don't hold up well in this sun. " I was also told it would cost $150 to repair them [as of January 2003 it would now cost $200 to repair them] and that since the car was in its fourth year, the warranty was no longer in effect. I and my wife have both been cut several times trying to get into the vehicle. Toyota's response is still "the warranty was only for 36 months. ".

Driver's door of new car needs much more force to close than other doors, on one occasion the door opened while vehcile was in motion and the door light did not come on, the consumer belives the door was defective and is a serious safety problem.
The driver's side door latch would keep sticking. Happens when door is either locked or unlocked from outside or inside.
Power door locks engage to locking position independently and often continually while vehicle is in motion. Was taken to Toyota dealer a minimum of two times to be repaired. Dealer detected a low voltage problem and replaced battery. Door locks continue to self lock. Dealer unable to get door locks to self initiate therefore diagnostic equipment unable to detect problem. Dealer unwilling to do any more for owner. Vehicle continues to engage locking mechanism while in use. Transporting children is potentially dangerous if mechanism locks child/children inside.
