1 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2004 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 03/02/2020

With my foot on the brake, when I put the car in drive, it suddenly accelerated jumping ahead hitting a tree in parking lot. Even with braking, it did not stop. I had to reverse and it still speed up without pressing the accelerator. I had to put it in park. Then only it stopped. The airbags did not work. Only my shoulder & lap belts saved me. Such an episode happened several times while I was trying to back up in my drive way, it accelerated while I was pressing the brake. I reported this problem to Toyota company, torrance, CA as well as its dealer in westbury, NY. Notihing was done to date. It started in 2005 and continued even in 2020. The mileage varied from 1500 to 134000. Dates also varied.

6 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2016 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 03/21/2017

At stop signs or traffic lights, the engine would rev considerably & then stop. As we approached our driveway, the car lurched forward, then stopped. We got to our garage-entry control box & the car lurched forward on our parking deck, going less than 5 mph, & we hit a brick wall. We then put the car in reverse & it lurched backwards so we stopped the car, turned it off & called the police. My husband, who was driving, sustained chest injuries (black & blue, injured sternum, mark on his collarbone from the seat belt not restraining him sufficiently, difficulty breathing/standing/dressing/walking - general pain & suffering) which weren't visible to the emts at the time & he didn't need to go to the hospital although his regular doctor advised him to see another at an emergency care center. I refused him moving it elsewhere as I didn't want to do further damage to the car or another vehicle while we waited for the police. I, as the passenger, was not affected at all physically. The car was towed to our dealership's service center where it's been sitting since 3/21/17 awaiting a Toyota inspection on April 21st - why it should take so long is inconceivable as it's our only car!.

14 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2000 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 12/27/2009

My Toyota Camry 2000 motor blew up while driving 55 mph in Dec, 2009. Oil light came on just moments before it started knocking. No check engine light came on. No warning. In Aug 2009 my check oil light came on and I took it into Toyota. They said it was just my gas cap. It came on again the next day, I took it back to Toyota, I told them I smelled a burning smell. They said nothing was wrong with my car. I took it back a third time and told them something was wrong. They said I could maybe use a new oil cap and perhaps use a new belt but nothing was wrong with my car. My check engine light never came on again. (I believe they disconnected it. ) when my engine blew in Dec. 2009, I had it towed to Toyota. They informed me my oil had gelled and it would be about $5,000 to fix it. I told them I got my oil changed every 3 to 4 thousand miles. I did not wait till the 5,000 mile mark like it said to in my Toyota handbook. They said sometimes it just happens madam. Toyota refused to pay to fix it.

The oil leak was sudden and began to drip oil from engine area causing a burning smell to emit from the engine. On that same day I took the vehicle to my local Toyota dealership for service to correct the problem. The dealer removed and replaced vvti oil line, timing chain cover, and drive belts. Would like to find out if a previous Toyota limited safety campaign lsc 90k should be expanded to include 2007 Toyota Camry v-6.

When driving on highway, there was some noise coming from the engine compartment, and suddenly I lost power steering and lights flashed on the front panel. I managed hard to pull off the vehicle from the highway, it was so hard make turns to the ramp. The engine temperature started to fluctuate. There was little smoking come out, I had to stop there. It was turned out there was a belt fell out and my alternator eventually died. My car is 4-cylinder, not 6.

17 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2001 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 09/06/2009

I was traveling in my Toyota Camry 2001 on I 75 s from royal oak to detroit, mi around 2:30 am on September 6th 2009 ,when suddenly I heard some cracking noise underneath the hood and fire from underneath the hood. I was traveling at around 70 miles/hr and tried to steer the vehicle to wards the shoulder and power steering failed and I saw engine light blinking, then tried to slow down and brakes failed. I quickly used hand brake and stopped the vehicle. I quickly turned off the ignition and tried to open the door and noticed that it was locked. I quickly pulled both the knobs simultaneously and got out of the car and called 911. By the time fire engine came to the scene, the car was on huge fire. My car didn't have any major issues in the past. I did change timing belt as per the company guidelines and at authorized dealer/service center. I changed the tires 2 months ago and oil change 1 and half month ago. Neither cops nor me could come to a conclusion on what went wrong. I am letting you know as it may help to increase the safety of cars if you investigate my car. I will be waiting for your response.

18 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2004 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 07/27/2009

Acceleration on my 2004 Toyota Camry began to fluctuate wildly while I was driving down the road. Car would suddenly accelerate, then decelerate almost non-stop. I shut engine off, called Toyota and had the car towed in. I was told that the engine control module (ecm) was defective and would be replaced under a federally mandated warranty - car had 76,000 miles, and warranty was good to 80,000 miles. However they also told me that the accelerator pedal assembly had simultaneously failed. That would cost me $681. Toyota's own technician said that the ecm failure caused the accelerator pedal assembly to fail. Toyota corporate, however, told me that the two incidents were unrelated. After reading about the "accelerator pedal sticking" problem in the news lately, I wonder if my problem is not part of a much larger problem involving the ecm on Toyotas cars. If I was not wise enough to shut off my engine when the problem occurred, a serious accident could easily have occurred. Please continue to investigate the ecm problem, as I believe that Toyota is not forthcoming with the full story here. The consumer also stated there weas an engine knock coming from the vehicle. The dealer repalced the tensioner, and belt. The water pump was wearing prematurely, there was a noise coming from the steering column when turning the wheel. The dealer replaced the intermediate steering shaft. The check engine light was on all the time. The dealer replaced the catalytic converter. The ecm and accelerator pedal were replaced. Updated ivoq 04/15/11.

20 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2005 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 10/30/2007

The retaining nut for the alternator pulley came off the shaft causing the pulley to wobble which led to the loss of the serpentine belt; without the belt I lost power steering, the battery began to run low and the engine started to overheat. Fortunately I was 2 miles from home and was able to make it there w/o any damage to the vehicle. The vehicle was still under warranty, ~19,000 miles on the odometer, and was repaired by the dealer. The belt and the alternator assembly were replaced.

21 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2002 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 09/21/2007

At about 105,000 miles on my 2002 Camry v6, the car experienced hesitating driving while driven at speeds above 40 mph when removing slightly the foot from the throttle pedal. The car is bucking backward and forward for indefinite time until the throttle pedal is fully depressed or fully pressed. This is an unsafe situation since on the highway the speed cannot be decreased or increased any time. Notified dealer and told that this cannot be identified since there is no error code generated (no check engine light on). Replaced all spark plugs at 108,000 miles on Aug 24, 2007. Problem not solved. Spouse noticed increased bucking while driving down hill. Went back to the dealer. Performed test drive with technician in the car and the diagnose system hooked to the car's computer. Detected some misfires on cylinders 5 and 6. Replaced solenoid ignition packs for cylinder 5 & 6 and test drove again. Problem not solved. Technician concluded that fuel injectors are clogged. Performed fuel injectors purge (cleaning). Problem not solved. Technician recommended to replace all fuel injectors and solenoid ignition packs. Car was maintained properly during the ownership. Oil & filter changed every 3000 miles, replaced air filter every 30,000 miles, replaced timing belt and belt tensioners at 87,000 miles, replaced water pump at 87,000 miles, flushed transmission fluid at 87,000 miles. From reading various customers complaints, it appears to be a transmission problem but dealer did not mention anything about it.

22 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2004 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 08/24/2007

When I was driving my car from parking lot to go home, I heard loud noise from front of my car and felt stiffness of control of my car. I tried to drive back to parking to take a look, but the car lost of power steering assist. The car was towed to Toyota dealer. The dealer found out the power steering pulley had broken off and the drive belt came off. I was lucky it happened in parking lot, or I may get to a car accident. I have contacted to Toyota, but they said it was not in recall of failed crankshaft pulley because the VIN number does not in the range of recall. But my car has exactly same issue the recall NHTSA campaign id number: 11v539000 has. The car is 2004 Camry.

23 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

26 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2002 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 11/22/2006

I purchased my car in 2001, used with 17k miles, form Toyota of durham. I have 105k miles now on it. I kept the routine oil change and had sluggish oil problems every time I got my oil changed. There was no documented oil sluggish problem from Toyota. My vehicle is clicking with a strange sound. I had it looked at and the mechanic determined the timing belt is going. But he advised me to take it to the dealership where I purchased it. I did and they told me that it was the engine. I need a new engine. A new engine, no way. How is it that a Toyota Camry with barely 100k miles need a new engine and nothing is said to be wrong with this vehicle. I have owned Toyota and Lexus models for a long time now and have yet to deal with such shame in their models. I am really disappointed at this mess of a car. Surely, we know that there are something that need to be done at a certain time but why is it that a new engine would be required? I am really not going to be the best person promoting Toyota cars in the future. I had plans on looking into the Toyota sienna for my family. But the odyssey is looking much better now.

27 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1997 Toyota Camry

28 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1996 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 01/16/2005

The oil passage was too narrow, not letting oil into the crank shaft. This caused a rod to blow through the block, which caused the engine to fail and no longer to operate. Manufacturer was contacted by owner. Engine was replaced with a used motor, timing belt, water pump and cap rotor wires. Manufacturer was notified but did not do anything.

29 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1997 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 11/24/2004

The following is a complant that was sent to Toyota motor CO. It is not my wish to have to write under these circumstances. However I must, because of the things that have come to pass. My family has supported Toyota, and ofcourse all own Toyota due to the beautiful work and craftsmanship of Toyota. However my Toyota Camry has made me to doubt the strong feeling I once had for my car. I turned my car over to Toyota of louisville for service and the repair of oil sledging. I assume that the problem was fixed. However at the time I witnessed no symptoms. I simply did not want to wait until the problem occurred. So I had it serviced to avoid any problem. Later after having my timing belt replaced I started to witness a sluggish acceleration, and worsening gas mileage, the problem worsened. Eventually the check engine light flashed. And the oil light also. However it was right before the engine threw a rod on the interstate on the way home from college for thanksgiving break. I would like to have my car restored to the state it was in before the special servicing. I would like to continue to do business with your company; I plan on purchasing from Toyota in the future. However this matter has placed me in salty waters, and as u can imagine that is not a very pleasant taste. I would like to hear something back from your office regarding this matter as soon as possible. Thank you for your time. Sincerely a faithful customer john r. Cummings jr.

35 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 10/11/2003

While driving at approximately 65 mph going uphill on expressway, we heard a loud noise from the engine compartment, followed immediately by smoke and flame. By the time we go to the shoulder of the road, we had no brakes, no steering, nothing was working. Car was totally covered in smoke and flames were intense. Another vehicle stopped within seconds of our pulling over with a medium sized fire extinguisher. He proceeded to lay on his back and totally empty the extinguisher from under the car, which made no difference. By the time the fire trucks arrived (within 10 minutes), the entire engine compartment was totally burned. I notice that you have closed out pe02-079, but believe it to be related. The car is under investigation by state farm insurance. The car had a major service at 67,000 miles, including a timing belt replacement on July 24th, 2003. The car had approximately 70,000 miles at the time of the incident.
