Without any lights or indication of a problem, while my husband was driving on the freeway in California, smoke began billowing out from under the hood. Within seconds, flames were seen, by the time he reached the side of the road, the engine was fully engulfed in fire. By the time he got out of the car, minutes, the dash was engulfed. It took 15 minutes for the fire department to put it out. This vehicle has had regular services per manufacturers requirements, plus a safety and engine examination approximately 30 days ago. No evidence of a problem of any kind was found at that time.

The 2002 Toyota Camry, purchased used from ray brandt Toyota in August of last year, completely shut down while my mother was driving at highway speeds this past Monday. She barely missed a head-on collision, because she was unable to control the car without power steering. I advised her to bring the Camry immediately to ray brandt Toyotaã‚?? s service department. She turned it over to them that same afternoon. The next day a service technician was able to duplicate the problem in the shop. Even with the problem occurring at the shop, the technicians were unable to locate the cause that day. Yesterday, sheila, a ray brandt Toyota service representative, assured me that they had solved this type of intermittent problem before. I asked if the diagnostic cost would run into the thousands of dollars. She said $300 would most likely be enough to pay for the diagnostic time to determine the cause. She added that she would be calling me with the resolution today. Today, at approximately 12:45 pm I went in person to the service department. I spoke to another ray brandt Toyota customer service representative named mike. I asked him had ray brandt Toyota solved this type of problem before. Mike stated that yes they had although it took 2 weeks and cost $850. Mike told me to be patient; give ray brandt Toyota time to fix it. Later this afternoon sheila told my mother that there was nothing ray brandt Toyotaã‚??s service could do to determine the cause of the problem. This was, of course a direct contradiction to what she stated to me yesterday. My mother then again expressed her concern that the car was a death trap. Sheila agreed that the car was, in fact, not safe to drive. She nevertheless told my mother to come pick the car up. Doing that to my mother was despicable.

With no warning or previous problems, while driving at 60 mph, the 4 cylinder engine in my 2002 Toyota Camry. I am a 78 year old woman and I was unable to control the car with no power. I just barely avoided a head-on collision. This happened 5 more times in quick succession before I could drive immediately back to my home. I brought the car back to ray brandt Toyota of metairie 504-464-4500. Told them of the problem and the potential for a serious accident, due to the car shutting down while driving. The dealers service department has had the car for a day, duplicated the problem, but claim they can find no reason for this to happen. I do not want to die in a fatal accident caused by the engine shutting down and if they cannot locate the cause of this problem, I will get rid of the car and never purchase another Toyota. Please help.
On March 21,2005 I gave my tyota Camry ce 1999 with 103,000 miles on it for tune up to door's auto speed shop. The next day, after the tuneup was comleted
the mechanics took the car for a test drive. During the drive below 40 miles per hour the engine blew up. Mr. Keith door, the owner and manager of the shop, called the local Toyota of slidell and informed them that the engine blew up because of the accumulation of the sludge in the engine. They agreed to change the engine free of charge. Later, however, they demanded $4,000 for the new engine claiming that the cause of the blowup was not the sludge. They could not tell, however, why the engine blew up.

Purchased a 2005 Camry se in Feb. 2005. Had 500 miles on the car and it needed a complete overhaul due to defective parts from the company. I now have a new car that has diminished value due to the overhaul. I was also without the car for 20 plus days. I feel they knew the motor was defective when they sold it to me but I guess they some 70 year old would not know the difference. I believe I should at the least have been given a new engine or another new car without the defective engine. I guess that would be too much to expect from the "reliable automaker. ".
We own a 1998 Toyota Camry VIN #2t2bg22k9w0262597, and we are the original owners of this car. About a one and a half years ago, we replaced the idle speed control unit for approximately $400. 00. The Camry had problems starting when it is cold, and the hayward California Toyota dealer wants to charge us another $400. 00 to replace the same part that they replaced about 18 months ago. The part is a Toyota manufacturing part, and it cost about $250. 00. Toyota has not recalled this part, and it should last longer than 18 months. I have talked with a number of auto repair shops, and they know that this part fails on the Toyota carmy. I have filed a complaint with Toyota corporation reference number #200411291978, but I do not feel Toyota will address this problem. I have not heard from them, and I filed the complaint about two months ago. I am hoping that you will investigate this problem and let me know what you discover. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

I purchased a 2000 Toyota Camry ce (VIN # 4t1bg22koyu962183) with a 4 cylinder engine, 5 speed manual transmission in February of 2000. Friday, July 3, 2004 around 6:15am I was driving this car to work on rte 495 south in hudson, mass. Without warning, I heard a pop under the hood and suddenly there was a loud explosion. White smoke was pouring out the rear and dark smoke from under the hood. I was driving 65 mph down a steep grade, in heavy traffic. I quickly began pull into the brake down lane. I applied the brakes but the brake pedal went to the floor and the clutch pedal was also to the floor. I slowly applied the parking brake and managed to get the car stopped. I had flames coming from under the hood and smoke coming into the drivers compartment. The traffic that was being blinded by the smoke and the road had guardrails so I could not pull completely off the road. I was concerned about getting out of the car into traffic but I had to get out quickly. I got away from the vehicle and called the authorities. By the time the fire trucks arrived the front of the Camry was fully engulfed in flames. The car was a total loss. What occurred that morning hit me later. I realized that I could have been seriously injured or killed. Thankfully I did not panic and cause a bad situation to be worse. I thought what if someone else had been driving this car, my pregnant daughter or my wife. What if a family with a child in a car seat, a new younger driver or an elderly person was driving? I consider myself lucky to walk away uninjured. Someone else might have been another story. I dont know what caused this to occur, I took good care of this vehicle. My insurance company, travelers casualty company of connecticut, is handling the settlement. I thought it was important to let you know of this failure. I had found that there was an investigation into Camry fires a while ago. Please contact me if you need more details. William hovey.

I have read a report in USA today newspaper about the Camry solara surging and I have experienced this myself. It has happened numerous times while traveling at highway speeds. Most of my travel is at these speeds. At the time I did not notice the spedometer or the tachometer increase, it just felt like I got a sudden push from behind. It does not happen at any certain time, road condition, weather or anything else. Each time on the highway I was using my cruise control. Also I notice in the report that others have reported that the car accelerated while depressing the brake pedal. I myself was just involved in a minor crash recently where at the time I thought that something wasn't right. I had begun to move into the spot that the driver in front of me was moving out of. We were in the right turn lane, stopped, waiting to turn. As I moved I looked left for clearance and when I turned back, looking right, she had stopped. Maybe 5-10 feet ahead of me. Well I slammed on the brakes and it was like the car wouldn't stop. I could feel the pedal pusle from the antilock brakes. I wasn't going more than 5mph max. I had just started to move. I don't even think I touched the gas, just let off of the brake to coast ahead into what I thought was an unoccupied spot. At the time it seemed odd to me that I wasn't able to stop in such a short distance especially while going as slow as I was. But after your car gets crumpled you kind of forget about everything else except the vehicle and drivers condition involved. Of course I recieved a ticket for careless driving for being the rearender, not the rearendee.
I had backed out of parking space. When I put 2003 Toyota Camry in drive, it surged forward. I braked but the vehicle accelerated. I depressed brake fully, nonetheless the car accelerated uncontrollably and very quickly. Vehicle only stopped by violent collision with two parked vehicles and cement blocks. Only good fortune prevented deaths of any passers by. Witnesses observed my foot fully on the depressed brake pedal as the car was at rest after the accident.
Consumer enter the parked vehicle turned on ignition and consumer states' vehicle took off, consumer tried to stop vehicle would not stop, vehicle came to a stop after hitting a fire plug. Please provide any further information ts.
While driving 65 mph on interstate 40 the engine seized due to oil gelation. Mr.
Midas in forestville, MD did not put any oil in my car and now the engine is gone.
The engine seized and blew while driving on the interstate, which caused a catastophic fire and complete damage to the entire engine and surrounding parts. It was a potentially disastrous event that could have caused great injury. We are contacting Toyota regarding the newsworthy "engine sludge" problem that they are admitting in 1996-2000 Camrys (ours was 1996) and there claim of honoring engine damage claims.

Oil sludge was found during oil change at 12000 miles. All maintenance intervals complied with.
Sludge buildup in engine. Huge puffs of black smoke on starting.
At 32,000 miles, the warning light indicating low oil pressure came on. The owner took it immediately to the nearest Toyota dealer for repair, as it was supposedly under warranty. The dealership and Toyota motor corporation refuses to honor any warranty work because of 'engine sludge'. After only checking the oil level and pulling the valve covers off of the engine, they determined that it was 'owner neglect'. And will only look into possible causes at the owners's cost. After researching the internet the owner has found several cases of 'engine sludge' not only in the Toyota Camry's produced in 1999 through 2001 but in the Toyota truck's sienna model, as well.
While driving, the vehicle caught on fire, no repairs have been done to the vehicle. (claim#20-5411-606).
Engine seized up at 31,920 miles. Dealer states car needs a new engine because sludge was found in the oil pan, indicating poor engine maintenance. I have complete maintenance records on the vehicle, but Toyota is not interested in seeing them.
Engine oil changed every 3000-4000 miles. I previously had Honda accord with 186000 miles and no problems. There is an obvious defect with this engine!.
No summary listed for above vehicle.
While driving, the insured smell smoke, the insured then pulled over to investigate the smoke smell and discovered that flames were coming up to the windshield. (claim#11-3646-015).
The engine blew up. I have regularly changed my own oil at 6,000 mile intervals for the past year. The oil pressure light came on and I added 2 quarts of oil. One day later the engine blew and the oil pressure light never came on.
(18-0457-786) insured was driving and noticed smoke coming from the hood of vehicle, engine had caught on fire.
I have seen on the internet that there have been numerous sludge engine with proper maintenance. Toyota not backing the warranty. There is a big problem worldwide here.
The engine in my v-6 Toyota formed so much sludge that the engine would not run even though the vehicle was service in accordance with the mfg recomendations and the mfg would not cover the repairs under the drive train warranty.
