My 2005 Camry has 53000 on it, very well maintained. Was driving 25 mph on a traverse when the engine suddenly died. I tried to restart the car without success. Called a towing service, however, 10 minutes later I was able to start the car and drove home. The "service engine" light remained on. At first chance I drove my car to my local mechanic who told me it was the throttle body, but suggested to bring my car to the Toyota dealer because he had seen so many of Camry throttle malfunctions that he thought there might be a recall. I took his advice, brought it to the dealer who confirmed that my throttle body was bad and needed replacing. However he told me that he could not guarantee that the "service engine" light would not go off unless I had an engine flush and a full tune-up. This did not sit well with me, so I declined the services. I paid him $100 as a diagnostic fee. When he went to get my car, the engine would not turn on at all. I called a towing company who took it back to my mechanic. He replaced the throttle and reset the service light. The car is now running, but because of my mechanic's statement and many similar throttle complaints recorded on the internet, I strongly feel that the throttle issue should be investigated.

While driving my 1999 Toyota Camry onto the on ramp to the veterans expressway, the engine made a loud bang and smoke came out of the engine. The engine stopped! I had bought this car new in 1999,and it only has 44,000 miles on it. It is in super condition, except now it has a hole in the engine. If this had happened on the expressway, I would have been killed!!! a certified mechanic said that the piston rod cap bolt had broken and the rod blew a hole in the engine. The Toyota dealer and Toyota national said that I must pay to have this fixed. It needs a whole new engine!!I feel that it must be a defect or this would not happen at 44,000 miles. I have always had all of the maintenance requirements done. This is certainly a dangerous defect, because if your car seizes up and stops in traffic, you do not stand a chance. I've read where others have had the same problem. Why hasn't Toyota recalled this? it is certainly just as dangerous as the problems that they did recall cars for.

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Camry. While driving approximately 70 mph, the contact smelled an abnormal burning electrical odor. The contact was motioned to pull over by another driver because the vehicle was on fire. The contact was uninjured. The vehicle was towed by the contacts insurance company who determined that the fire was caused by a spontaneous engine fire and not a mechanical failure. The vehicle was destroyed. The VIN was unavailable. The failure and current mileage was 136,000.

Purchased a new 2010 Toyota Camry. After ~ 300 miles the engine had a new noise on start up. It was diagnosed as a problem with the variable valve timing gear assembly. After picking up the car it has been draining oil and is now not drivable.

1999 Toyota Camry. While traveling, the driver claimed to have heard a noise and lost the ability to steer the vehicle. The driver went off the left side of the road, struck a median barrier, came back across three lanes, went off the right side of the road, struck a guardrail and then came to rest partially in the right lane. According to the wrecker the driver, there was nothing wrong with the steering. However, there was damage to the engine that was not a result of the crash and that could have possibly caused a problem with the steering. (ohio traffic crash report # 10-0359-90) updated 08/05/10.
The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Camry. Before the contact changed his oil, he noticed that the dip stick indicated a low oil level even though the vehicle was only driven 2,000 miles. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was told that the vehicle was operating normally. The failure mileage was approximately 46,000 and the current mileage was approximately 81,000.
2010 Toyota Camry experienced acceleration on freeway exit ramp at 7:30 am during rush hour. Put the car in neutral and the engine raced. Car was pulled over to the side with engine still racing. The ignition was turned off and it stopped running. Checked to see if there was an obstruction with a floor mat - there was none. After 30 seconds, started the car and it alternated between idle and engine racing while doing nothing to the gas pedal. Recall fixes had not been done yet. Dealers response was they did not know what caused it and didn't care what did - just put in the recall remedies and tried to give it back to us to "try this". We have no confidence that the problem was understood, or fixed or that the dealer even cares. Their response was that it is Toyota's problem not theirs.
Heard a load noice on a Camry hybird 2007: and wheni took the car for service check , the dealer informed me with a failed water bump not covered under Toyota warrenty -at a low low milage 60,800.
After coming to a stop at a traffic light, my car engine sped up, forcing me to press down harder on the brake. The engine continued to increase in speed, and I placed the car into neutral, at which point the engine raced quite high. I turned off the ignition, the engine stopped, and I restarted it a few seconds later without further incident. My foot had not been on the accelerator from the time I stopped at the traffic light until I resumed my travels, after restarting the engine. Not sure about the model year; it might have been a 2010 model. I rented the car in las vegas from advantage and have asked for the VIN, but have not heard from the company yet. It is their car # [xxx] . Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

In March 2010 I had a problem with my wife's Toyota that I believe I either shouldn't have to pay to fix or have Toyota share in the cost. When I called Toyota to register the complaint they said couldn't help me, so I am asking for your help. My wife's Camry (2003 with just under 100,000 miles) developed a leak in its head gasket, so I took it into our local garage. They looked at it (pressure test) confirmed it was leaking and went on line (identifix. Com) to see what experiences other mechanics had with this problem and recommended fixes. The research showed that this problem was being reported frequently and more often than not also resulted in a more severe problem of stripping the engine bolts out of the block, requiring an engine replacement. My mechanic said I would be best off taking it to the dealership where we purchased the car and have them look at it, because if it was more than just the head gasket, I may be able to work something out with them. It was his opinion that a leak in the head gasket shouldn't cause the stripping of the engine bolts. We took it into our Toyota dealer and they investigated - took the head off - and found that it was what my mechanic had feared, three engine bolts were stripped and the engine would have to be replaced. Cost for a new engine block, head, labor, etc. $7,500. I told them what my mechanic had found online - this was happening a lot to this type engine (2003 - 6) - and my belief that this was a design flaw and asked them if there was something that Toyota could do to help defray the cost or was there a recall, etc. The service rep said no. . . No help from Toyota. I have all the paperwork and can you send you copies, including the identifix report. Considering all the pressure people, government, and lawyers had to exert on Toyota to get them to admit and address the recent accelerator problems, I was wondering if you could check or add my case to a database to see if some legal action is warranted.
Attn: defects investigations office. 2007 Toyota Camry with 38721 miles that is owned by and used as an undercover police vehicle accelerated without explanation on March 10, 2010. The operator, who is a sworn officer, advises that his foot was not on the accelerator and the vehicle increased in speed and engine revolutions without explanation. The event occurred over the course of approximately 1/10th of a mile reaching speeds just over 60 mph. The acceleration event corrected itself. There was no injury or crash associated with the event. The vehicle in question had completed a Toyota recall service program # ssc90l to address acceleration issues with this model vehicle on March 2, 2010. The vehicle was returned to the henrico police on March 3, 2010. The extremely short period of time between the recall service and this sudden unanticipated acceleration event gives reason to believe that the recall service was not effective in correcting the acceleration issues associated with Toyota brand vehicles. The vehicle was parked shortly after the event and is currently secured by the henrico police. The vehicle has not been driven or examined by any parties since the occurrence of this acceleration event. In light of the fact that this vehicle had recently completed the required acceleration recall service and has been secured since the date of the occurrence, this agency believes that this vehicle is an ideal candidate for examination by the office of defects investigations to determine the origin of this unanticipated acceleration event. The vehicle in question is outfitted with Toyota brand floor mats which are tethered to anchors in the floorboard of the vehicle.
2007 Toyota Camry le continues to have runaway unintended acceleration despite the vehicle undergoing a series of modifications at a Toyota dealership in auburn, CA. It has happened prior to be fixed and has happened once since being fixed.
Car: 2010 Camry le. Twice since purchasing the car in November the car has accelerated on its own. When accelerating to pass, the gas pedal travels to the floor, when it was not pushed that far. Both times I reacted by quickly putting the car in neutral and the pedal immediately returned to its neutral position. No damage, no injuries in either event.
I experienced a runaway acceleration while driving my 2010 Camry le v6 (made in japan). While leaving the parking lot of my work place I was trying to pull away from a stop sign and the engine revved out of control. As I tried to pull away from the stop sign the tires slipped because it had just snowed. I gave it a bit more gas to get over the snow when the car started to pull away from the stop sign the engine revved out of control. I pressed and held down on the brake, the car continued to pull forward, I put the car in neutral and the engine was at redline for about 10 more seconds then returned to normal. At no time did I floor the accelerator, it was not stuck. I stepped down on the gas just a bit to clear the snow patch and the engine just revved out of control. I am lucky this didn't happen in traffic, and I knew enough to hold down firm on the brake, or there could have been an accident.
While accelerating from a stop the car suddenly lurched forward and accelerated at a higher rate.
Oil light came on. Took to Toyota dealer to check. Within minutes said it was sludge and needed a new engine block.
2009 Camry 4cyl. - when engine was started, with transmission in park, the engine revved to over 4500 rpm without any contact with the gas pedal. Only way to slow the engine was to turn off the ignition. After a few minutes, the engine was started with no issue. Dealer reported "no problem found". Owner believes it is a faulty computer or electrical system.
Engine caught on fire and car was declared totaled. I was driving in my neighborhood when I smelled horrible burning odor. I put window down to see if someone was burning brush outside. Once window was down, smoke started to pour into driver's compartment, and then I saw the smoke from under the hood of the engine. I immediately pulled onto side street, shut off car, grabbed purse and keys, and ran. Person in street told me car was on fire, which I hadn't been able to see, because the flames were pouring out from under the engine onto the street. I ran and called 911 from cell phone. Two fire trucks came within 5 minutes, and it took them 20 minutes to put out the fire. The engine was totally melted down. I could have died as a result of fumes or being burned and was lucky I wasn't on a highway at high speeds.

Toyota Camry 2002. The check light came on. Three bolts were strip from the engine. Toyota is aware of it and didn't do anything. It cost me approx $4,000 to fix. Toyota issued a TSB 2 years ago about this failure: TSB 01507, NHTSA #10021542, dated April 6 2007. I found this in my research. My mechanic told me Toyota said to replace the head, head gasket and bolts. That the head had been redesigned since it was a know issue. It was alleged caused when Toyota changed building the head from cast iron to aluminum. I am not the only one with this issue. . Read more...
Toyota Camry 2007 - sudden acceleration in reverse. When I am backing up the car at slow speeds (such as backing out of my garage) the car often suddenly accelerates backwards. When backing up out of my garage I must keep my foot on the brake at all times and be ready to step hard on the brake to stop the sudden backwards acceleration. When driving forward, the engine often hesitates for several seconds when I step on the gas. This often happens when I am rapidly accelerating to enter a freeway. This is a dangerous situation as I need the car to accelerate to enter fast moving traffic but I cannot count on the engine to rapidly speed up. After several seconds of hesitation, the car then accelerates too rapidly. My Toyota dealer claims to have fixed the rapid acceleration when driving backwards, but the problem was not fixed. As for the acceleration hesitation, the Toyota dealer claimed that the problem I described did not exist.
The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Camry. While approaching a stop sign and depressing the brake pedal, the brakes would not engage. The vehicle continued to accelerate momentarily before decreasing speed. She has not taken the vehicle into the dealer for inspection nor had the manufacturer been contacted. She did receive an interim letter from the manufacturer advising her to remove the floor mats, stating that they could cause unintended acceleration in the vehicle. The vehicle was also hesitated when it was started on occasion and the interior lights flashed on intermittently. The failure and current mileages were approximately 19,926.
My 2002 Toyota Camry with 72,500 miles had the check light come on. I took it to a Toyota dealer in columbia, SC. I was told the engine had sludge and would soon stop working. I told the dealer I changed the oil regularly when needed but the dealer said it was my fault.
I was driving along a rural road and my engine seized up and the car died. It turns out that the oil filter fell off at some point- 2 months after an oil change. The oil light did not come on until approximately 30 seconds before the car died. When the mechanic spoke with Toyota, he asked if this had occurred other times and was told they had heard of it happening once or twice. Since the engine had to be rebuilt, this is a rather costly problem to have occur. Fortunately I was in a relatively safe place to pull over and call for a tow truck.

2002 Toyota Camry se v6 - around September 2009 I began to notice sudden surges in acceleration while driving between 40-45 mph. Without changing the position of the gas pedal, the vehicle would surge-hesitate-surge several times then suddenly stop the behavior. Since then, I notice it occurs at least once every 3 out of 4 times I'm driving the car. To me, this is not related to anything on the floor or the gas pedal itself. It appears to come from within the engine or other component. No repairs have been investigated or performed. I am considering a visit to the dealer.
The balance shaft hit the oil pan and made a hole in the engine and the oil spread all over the engine that led to lot of smoke from the engine.

2007 Camry xle v6, this is my second car (lemon law replaced first Camry at 300 miles new) and 4th transmission, all covered by Toyota. Last week all oil drained from vehicle while driving. . Oil spewed from underneath vehicle for miles. My girlfriend called me at work, asked me to check my car as she saw my trail of oil for 1/4 mile. . Took car to my mechanic, found a rubber hose, a clamp on each end about 6 inches long, the clamps and hose had to be replaced, because oil spewed out of this part. If my girlfriend hadn't called me, my engine would have seized. As when I checked it at work a puddle of oil was under vehicle, and the dip stick showed no oil in vehicle. What if I was on vacation or traveling out of state, my car engine would have been destroyed. Engine would have seized due to no oil in engine. Big problem. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
2003 Toyota Camry le, 4 cyl. , automatic, approx 60,000 miles. Problem: uncommanded full acceleration. Driving conditions: clear weather, daytime, dry surface highway, cruise control - off, transmission gear selected - drive. Consequence: major loss of vehicle control. Corrective action: throttle / sensor checked for failure at shop - no defect noted - could not duplicate failure. Replacement throttle $1100 with labor.
The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Camry. While driving 20 mph, the contact rear ended the preceding vehicle. He immediately noticed smoke coming from the front end and grill area of the vehicle. Five minutes later, flames appeared from the bottom of the front end of the vehicle. The entire front end became engulfed in flames. A police report was filed. There were no injuries. The current mileage was 20,000.
When applying brakes for a stop sign on a secondary road(20-25mph) the engine speed failed to reduce and the brakes were ineffective at stopping the vehicle. I turned off the ignition key a that point and stopped before the sign. The problem has not resurfaced since.
