38 Engine problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 04/22/2009

On April 22, 2009, an oil line part #15707-31030 ruptured on our 2007 Toyota Camry VIN very rapidly pumping oil from the engine and requiring immediate repair. Since April 2009, while investigating reimbursement for repair costs, several Toyota service representatives from local dealerships stated that Toyota has identified this model engine in avalon vehicles as having this same ruptured oil line defect as occurred on my vehicle. Since July 2009 while seeking reimbursement for engine repairs with Toyota customer service, I requested that this issue be pursued internal to identify this defect through technical bulletin or recall for Camry vehicles. On January 6, 2010, I spoke to miguel lopez, supervisor, Toyota customer experience, department wc10, Toyota motor sales, u. S. A. , reference this issue and he stated very clearly that "no action or follow-up" phone calls or other communication would be taken by his office to investigate this safety issue with Camry?s. He stated that safety concerns would have to be taken through a local dealership. Mr. Lopez stated he was the senior supervisor and he would not connect me to any other supervisor or point of contact within Toyota.

40 Engine problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 03/16/2009

The us federal trade commission has determined in its 2006 & 2007 reports that the Toyota Camry was the highest listed vehicle to be arbitrated. The failure I encountered was that the vehicle failed to move or react when you applied the gas pedal, this is due to a serious gap in response time due to the Toyota "drive by wire" process, software flash updates per the TSB-ecm are not solving the problem, which led to my accident, this problem may have the potential for causing serious injury or death as a result of not being able to accelerate out of harms way. I encourage Toyota Camry owners to return their vehicles per their states respective lemon laws or the federal magnuson-moss act. 2006 Toyota has the highest complaint rating, 286 complaints, totaling 83. 9% of the complaints. Toyota has the top 3 spots for complaints on their vehicles the Toyota Camry was the most complained about vehicle from everyone in all groups 42 complaints, totaling 12. 3% of all complaints. 2007 again Toyota took 85 complaints, totaling 84. 2% the top 3 vehicles were from Toyota, the Camry again is in place number 3 12 total complaints, totaling 11. 9%, the highest now 2 years in a row. . 42 Engine problem of the 2003 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 03/01/2009

A crack is developed in oil sub pan at the bottom of the engine body on my Toyota Camry 2003, which have only 51000 miles on it. An independent auto technician told me that a crack in the oil pan is unusual and it might have been there at the time of manufacture. A mechanic at the Toyota dealership in metairie told me the same thing along with the fact that such a crack is hard to detect. I am lucky that this fault was detected early and fixed before a fatal breakdown could have occurred. I have fixed this problem at Toyota dealers ship and it cost $3100, when I raised this issue they agreed to split cost fifty fifty and still it cost $1532 and that is too much for me seeing as how none of this was my fault. The old part is still with Toyota dealer ship they didn't hand over to me. I regularly change oil at the Toyota dealership, and I was surprised to learn that they failed to notice this fault earlier. Please investigate this problem.

46 Engine problem of the 2003 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 11/03/2008

While driving home one day I began to smell antifreeze in my car. My husband took the vehicle to a local garage who informed him that it was the head gasket. My car has only 77,000 miles on it. I took the car to my mechanic who confirmed that it was the head gasket. While repairing my vehicle the mechanic noticed that all four screws popped out. It cost me over 1700. 00 to repair. My mechanic reported this to be unusual for any car's head gasket to go with such low mileage. "it's unheard of". Toyota claims I am not covered because I'm over the mileage and would not help me. Clearly this should be a recall.

I bought a 2007 Toyota Camry xle 4cylinder in August 2006 and 4 times it has ran out of oil. The dealership does not know why this is happening and has me bringing in my car every 500 miles to check the oil levels.

52 Engine problem of the 1998 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 08/20/2007

My daughter has 2 1998 Toyota Camrys both have had massive engine block failure by the front motor mount, one resulted in a fire under the hood. Her first Camry I helped her buy it used about 1 1/2 years ago (this car was actually titled in my name) and approximately 6 months ago while driving at highway speed the engine block came apart by the front motor mount spraying oil all over the engine compartment, which proceeded to catch on fire, luckily no one was hurt and the fire was contained under the hood. There was parts of the engine block, and bolts and oil scattered on the highway. That Camry was not repairable. We found her another 1998 Camry about two months ago and this one she bought all on her own and it is titled in her name. Well a couple of days ago her new 1998 Camry had massive engine block failure at the front motor mount in the same location as the other Camry. There was no fire involved on this one. The police were called to both scenes, and the fire dept. Was called on the first incident. This form does not have input for 2 vehicles. The second 1998 Camry in my daughters name. We do still have possession of both vehicles and in the same condition as the day they stopped working.

53 Engine problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Camry. While driving 50 mph, the engine hesitated and the vehicle jerked when attempting to accelerate. As of August 10, 2007, the dealer has not inspected the vehicle. The failure mileage was 9,900 and current mileage was 10,000.

54 Engine problem of the 2000 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 06/16/2007

The car has 77000 miles on it. Vehicle was well maintained. I took the car to dealer the car for maintenance once in 4000 - 5000 miles. When I was driving at 55 on the freeway I heard a big sound and saw the smoke was coming out from the front panel. I pulled over the car and opened the front panel. I saw fire from two different places. I checked it with my mechanic , and he told me that the connectivity rod #2 came out very next to the oil filter which caused the engine to blew up. I called Toyota and filed the complaint. But Toyota representative told me that they won't replace the engine. The car was bought from the dealer shop, and the dealer was responsible for selling the defective car. I got a defective engine and forced replace it on my own.

55 Engine problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 05/30/2007

We have a 2007 Camry xle and the car surges when the cruise control is on and going up a hill. If the cruise is set for 67mph the car has a about 2300 rpm. Going up a moderate hill, the car downshifts and goes to 3400 rpm. It then surges to 4700 rpm which puts the drivers head into the head rest. The issue has been going on since we bought the car in may of 2007. We called our local dealer(topsham, maine lee Toyota), and they said it was what the computer was programmed to do. I asked again the 1st time I had it in for service and received the same response. It does only happen with the cruise control on, so we have learned to shut off the cruise control going up any hills. We have a 2nd issue with our 2007 Camry which Toyota refuses to fix. If the rear defrost is turned on while the radio is on, the radio goes dead. The radio antenna and defrost wires are in the same window, and one is shorting out the other. I was told that since no fire occurs to turn off the radio while the rear defrost is on. I have read many similar issues on the internet and told Toyota such.

56 Engine problem of the 1999 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 05/15/2007

Problem with 1999 Toyota Camry: in trying to pass a vehicle on a country road, the engine literally blew a hole. The rpm was just a little over 4,000. Thankfully, there was no vehicle coming from the other side and the other drivers on my side quickly slowed down to let me come back to my side of the road. Otherwise there could have been a major accident.

57 Engine problem of the 1999 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 05/03/2007

The contact owns a 1999 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that her vehicle caught fire without warning. She parked the vehicle and one half hour later, the police arrived to find that the fire department had extinguished the fire. The dealer stated that they have never heard of this before. A police report was filed. The engine size and powertrain were unavailable. The current and failure mileages were 42,000. Updated 06/08/07.

58 Engine problem of the 2000 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 03/15/2007

I have a 2000 Toyota Camry that has had four engine coil packs fail in a 2 year period. The last time two out of three coil packs failed simultaneously. Luckily I was not on the highway the last time this happened because I could not get the car to shift out of first gear and it would not go faster than 20 mph. The failure occured as I was trying to park my vehicle and the entire engine and car shook as soon as I put the car in reverse and continued to shake as I put it into drive. The first and second times I experienced the coil pack failures (both single failures) I was driving on the freeway and could not get the vehicle to accelerate beyond 35 mph. I had to put my emergency flashers on until I was able to get the vehicle off of the freeway and to a service station.

59 Engine problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 03/07/2007

Throttle and transmission hesitation when starting out from stop, and when attempting to increase speed, hazard avoidance, followed by speed overshoot. Cruise control over reacted to slight grade increase, such as an overpass, by down shifting the transmission 1 to 2 gears and accelerating past set speed by 7 to 10 mph. Car will slow to set speed and repeat the down shifting and acceleration until the cruise control was turned off or the road was leveled. During long up hill driving the cruise control has to be turned off completely as it presented a great possibility of causing an accident. The dealer maintaied s that the engine, transmission, and cruise control operated normally.

60 Engine problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 02/10/2007

2007 Toyota Camry se v6. The car has hesitated numerous times. Generally it happens when I am stopped or need to accelerate quickly to merge into traffic. It has hesitated several times after performing a turn and trying to accelerate after the turn. The hesitation generally lasts between 1-3 seconds.

61 Engine problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 02/01/2007

Car downshifts on small hills while using cruise control. Car hesitates at times and has poor acceleration as the transmission searches for a gear. This lasts for seconds, creating a safety hazard. The problems were resolved with a TSB issued 8/2/07 but the problem came back after a few days. It seemed Toyota's "learning" drivetrain re-learned all the problems.

62 Engine problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 01/20/2007

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that the vehicle hesitates when she depresses the accelerator pedal from a stop. She also stated that when she presses the pedal to the floor, it still hesitates three seconds before it accelerates. The contact stated that this happens constantly. The vehicle was purchased in January of 2007 and the failures have occurred ever since. The VIN, purchase date, and engine size were unknown. The current mileage is 2,300 and failure mileage was 3.

63 Engine problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 12/23/2006

I have a 2007 Camry xle with 13,000 miles. From the first day I purchased the car, it has had a severe hesitation when attempting to accelerate both from a stop and at highway speeds (passing, merging into traffic). In addition, the automatic transmission seems to slip between 2nd and 3rd gear (approximately 20 to 25 mph) before it locks into gear and begins to accelerate. This is most noticeable when the engine is cold. I told the Toyota service department about the problems at my last oil change. They hooked it up to the computer and test drove and were not able to replicate the transmission slippage problem. I was also told that the acceleration delay was due to the computer needing to communicate with the engine, and this was a normal delay and that I would "just have to get used to it". On several occasions this delay in acceleration has almost caused me to be in an accident.

64 Engine problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 12/17/2006

Complete loss of acceleration (up to 5 seconds or so) while making turns after having either slowed down, or completely stopped. Two of those times have almost resulted in accidents from oncoming vehicles. Complaint made at a Toyota dealership. They claim no recall information, but have indicated that it wasn't the first time they've heard of it. No solution given other than the 800# to call Toyota directly to make a complaint. Nice.

65 Engine problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 12/02/2006

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Camry. While attempting to accelerate from a stop, the vehicle hesitated. When driving on an incline, the vehicle downshifted automatically without warning. The failure began one week after purchasing the vehicle. The dealer stated that the vehicle was operating normally. The speed was unknown. The failure mileage was 250 and current mileage was 6,300.

66 Engine problem of the 1998 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 10/23/2006

: the contact stated while driving 60 mph on the highway, the engine blew. Smoke came out of the engine compartment as the vehicle was driven off to the side of the highway. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where the inspection determined a lifter rod had fractured and blown out the bottom of the engine casing. The service dealer and manufacturer were notified.

67 Engine problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 10/09/2006

2007 Toyota Camry: vehicle fails to accelerate from a stop or at low speeds creating a potentially unsafe situation. Toyota has been notified of this issue and has attempted to resolve it. Each attempt resulted in an "unable to duplicate". A TSB has been performed on the vehicle and this has not corrected to issue. This is a safety hazard! this very same problem can be found on several message forums. Someone is going to get hurt or killed if this is not corrected immediately. Please look into this ASAP.

68 Engine problem of the 2002 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 09/28/2006

I was sitting at a red light waiting to turn left. I suddenly heard my engine rev and looked at the dash. The rpm's were all the way over to the right. My car lurched forward, hard, and hit a Lincoln navigator in front of me. I pressed the brake as hard as I could, with both feet, to try and stop, but ultimately had to turn the car off to stop it from moving forward. I am now waiting for an investigation, which they have told me could take up to 30 days. I was told that if they determined that it was a mechanical failure, they have another 30 days to fix it. I am in sales and use my car all day, every day. They weren't very concerned about it.

69 Engine problem of the 2001 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 08/26/2006

Petition I and my 5 year old son were on highway, when the engine burst and caught on fire of my Toyota Camry 2001 exl. We had done all the maintenance with Toyota and all changes of the oil requirements on time. The last oil change was only 4 weeks prior the accident. We went through terrifying and very dangerous experience also lost 27,000 investments in the car. Toyota's engines have the sludge problems, but they decline any responsibilities. People should know about such dangerous problem before they can lose a loved one. I petition the agency for a recall, because of seriousness of failure.

70 Engine problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 07/01/2006

I have a problem with my 2007 Camry accelerating from a stopped or "low speed" position. I also have had to have the air conditioner condenser replaced due to a rock coming through the grill of the car and "puncturing the condenser. I took the car to a Toyota dealer in slidell, la as I was out of town. The dealer replaced the condenser for $625. 00 at my expense. I was told there were no "screens" or any type of materials that could keep this from occurring again. There is however a TSB for the same thing on the 2007 corolla. I feel that Toyota has a flaw in the grill of the 2007 Camry and it should be remedied. On the issue of acceleration, I live in a congested traffic area in FL and do not feel that I can safely "pull out" into traffic unless I have a great deal of clearance. I feel that this is a severe safety issue that needs to be addressed by Toyota. I am an avid fan of Toyota products. This is my 3rd Camry and I owned a scion tc as well so this is not about downing a Toyota product. I believe in Toyota. I just think now is the time to recognize a problem and remedy that for the consumer. I would hate for someone to get killed before they address this issue.
