1 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2019

My vehicle's brakes failed resulting in rear-ending the car in front. This happened on a freeway going straight at 10 am. My vehicle was moving at about 20 miles/ hr when I stepped forcefully on the brake pedal as the car in front of me slowed but I did not lurch forward, my seat belt did not tighten to pull me back and my bag pack that was on the front passenger leather seat stayed where it was. My vehicle behaved as if I had not braked. When I stepped on the brakes, I could see asphalt between my vehicle and the vehicle in front. My vehicle's front bumper, grill and hood was damaged. The vehicle immediately in front of mine had dents on the rear bumper and the trunk. There was a third vehicle in front of the one in front of mine that was also damaged, however, I do not know the extent of the damage. The impact occurred at a low speed which did not cause my seat belt to tighten and did not cause my backpack on the passenger seat to slide forward.

2 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2018

Brake failure. Was driving in residential street (low speed) when brakes stopped working. Had to use parking brake. Problem seems to be with brake fluid reservoir tank/filter, which Toyota offered to service until 30 June 2017. Unfortunately, never had problems with brakes until now--1 1/2 years after the service offer had expired. Should be full recall. The reason why problem did not surface till now is because vehicle has low miles (85,000 after 12 years).

3 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2018

Brakes fail after all warning lights come on regardless of speed.

4 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2018

I just found out that my brake actuator is failing. Toyota apparently issued an enhanced warranty rather than a recall to fix this known defect despite the safety risks for all drivers if another driver's brakes fail. I am under the mileage but about a year beyond the extended warranty date. Toyota corporate will not cover the fix and said this is their company position. I feel this should be a recall for the safety of all drivers. (when I brake the brakes make a barking sound. this is what prompted going to the dealer. ).

5 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 06/19/2018

My 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid started experiencing an error message displayed on dash, "check vsc system", additionally all the indicator lights on the dash lit up. This started happening at the end of March 2018. I have an obd2 reader and the fault code was "c1391". I was able to erase the code and dashboard returned to normal but message and lights return 2-3 days later. In mid-June 2018 I took the camry to Toyota to repair it. They did a diagnostic test ($109) to tell me what I already told them regarding the code. I knew that was the brake actuator assembly problem. They gave me a a quote of $1895 for part and tax and an additional $340 plus tax for labor. I picked up my car, did not have the $2400 to get the work done (parts also would take 2 days to get). They did warn me against driving the vehicle until it was fixed. The technician also pointed out the odd motorized noise the actuator was making when the vehicle was off. He said it shouldn't make any noise when it was off. After further research on forums, I found there was a Toyota warranty enhancement program ze1 specifically for my vehicle for the replacement of the brake actuator assembly (see attached). It was issued in July 2014 to offer full replacement and reprogramming at no cost to the customer. However, it had dated conditions and was only applicable if the lights and messages came up on dash. Although the sound has occurred since I purchased the used car in Jan 2010, I did not receive lights or message until March 2018 but the grace period ran out on July 2017. Toyota should honor the extension of the replacement program when the problem occurs if they won't proactively resolve it prior to the indicated signs. Toyota is warning me to fix this at my cost or risk brake failure at any time.

6 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 05/17/2018

Complete brake failure!!I was driving down the road approaching a stop light when my brakes went all the way to the floor and a lot of lights came on the dashboard, I coasted to a stop luckily without hitting another car. This is the first time this has ever happened, I have no warning lights indicating there is or was an issue and I had my car towed to the local mechanic that is telling me that it has a faulty brake part #4405030660. I did a little research and it looks like Toyota sells an updated part replacement for this faulty original part, part cost is $1200 plus $700 labor. Reading many forums I'm finding out that there are many people that have had complete brake failure over the years with this same issue and id love to know why this isn't a recall but a punishment from Toyota and a death sentence just waiting to happen.

7 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2018

Faulty abs controller affecting everything from the battery charging, ac, abs and vsc control system worse case causing brakes to fail.

8 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2018

Brake actuator failure.

9 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 12/13/2017

Brake actuator failed, triggering warning lights and making it hard to push on the pedal to stop the car while in motion. Abs function won't activate. The issue started in may 2017 and was taken to a Toyota dealer in lufkin, texas for diagnosis. The technicians "couldn't" determine the problem and released the vehicle. This same step happened multiple times over the ensuing months, only to be finally diagnosed on Dec 13, 2017. I researched the issue online and found that the actuator problem is covered by a warranty extension, which stretches out the warranty period beyond the standard three years or 36 months to, ultimately, 10 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. I thought that was good news, but after speaking with Toyota corporate rep, the warranty was denied due to the vehicle being out of the coverage period since June. I explained that there were attempts to have the issue diagnosed prior to the expiration, but the rep stated that since the actual determination happened outside of the period, coverage could not be extended. Since this is a known issue, their techs should have recognized the problem immediately and repaired the vehicle, which would have been covered by the extended warranty. Furthermore, it's a safety issue and an actual recall should be the remedy instead of working around it with a "service campaign. " I am asking for assistance to have Toyota cover this repair due their failure to educate their service techs or a potential deliberate attempt to move the diagnose outside of the warranty coverage period.

20 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 05/21/2014

Vehicle serviced 3/10/10 under Toyota 90l recall campaign. Dealership stated all systems functional upon completion. On 5/21/14, in safe road conditions and parking lot speeds <10 mph, driver applied brakes to vehicle in order to pull into parking spot. During braking, vehicle did not slow or stop, but accelerated at a high rate of speed, striking a parking berm and 3 other vehicles. Police report made; driver not cited but was advised to contact Toyota re brake failure and acceleration. Toyota was contacted; inspection was made by bosch engineering. Toyota contends the incident is not a result of any manufacturing defect. Toyota provided a technical report containing engineering data without layman's explanation or proof of its contention. Toyota was found by the doj to have misled consumers and the govt regarding severity and "resolution: of this issue. On 8/21/14 and 8/22/14 driver was contacted by Toyota with a second and separate recall notice #e0u, affecting the vehicle's brake reservoirs, in which clogging and/or low fluid levels "could cause additional warning lamps[. . . ]to illuminate and front brake assist could be temporarily lost. " the warning lamp in question did illuminate during the 5/21 incident. Legal counsel for driver has advised an independent review of the bosch report and inspection of the brake reservoir; however, the vehicle was totaled and sold at auction by the insurance company's salvage agent. I have initiated an independent review of the bosch report at my own expense. In light of Toyota's misleading conduct regarding recall campaign 90l and the subsequent recall #e0u, driver contends that Toyota is at fault for the events of 5/21/14.

21 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2014

When I tried to apply brakes to stop, I realized that the brake had completely failed and I was on the 110 freeway on a busy Monday morning. Luckily I didn't rear end the car in front of me. The dealer is telling me that my brake system (accuator and electronic components) are out. The car computer system cannot communicate to the brake system and thus I might loose brakes if I keep running. The check vsc system light turned on along with the abs, hybrid battery, park and all other alert lights on the dash board. In addition, I'm told my auxillary battery is also out ($460) dealer is charging me $4800 dollar (excluding the aux battery) and I don't know what to do since the car is with the dealer and I'm told the brakes will fail if I continue to drive. I have 104,000 miles and have done all servicing at Toyota dealers. No warranties and basically they can't help.

22 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 04/17/2014

Brakes started acting funny and making strange noises. I took it in to get it looked at and was informed that it would cost $3000 to replace the abs actuator and that if I didn't, the brakes could fail at any time.

23 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 04/16/2014

My wife experienced a failure of the assisted braking system on our 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid. This occurred while she was dropping off our children at school but fortunately occurred at low speed. The failure occurred without warning. The failure became apparent when multiple dashboard warning lights lit up and when the brakes failed to stop the vehicle adequately. After the vehicle had been parked a re-started, the problem resolved. We understand from information available from other drivers of this vehicle that the failure is likely to recur and so remains a serious safety concern.

24 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2014

This complain is on behalf of my wife's Camry Hybrid, same issue I had in my 2009 Camry Hybrid few years back, sudden warning lights on dash and brake failure resuming normal operation few seconds or minutes later without leaving any trace for tech to see, if it was cheaper for gm not to recalling $. 50 part I sure Toyota would not want to recall $1700 part, please look into it I have the old defective part available for testing if necessary.

25 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 02/25/2014

I turned on my car and I noticed a "check vsc system" light come on along with the "brake" light. I made sure my emergency brake was off and the warning lights remained on. I pulled away from my house and noticed that every time I went to brake, my brake felt hard and I could barely get it to move. I got about a mile away from my house and about 50 feet from an intersection I went to slow down, but my brake was still hard and when I tried to brake it failed to work for about 5 seconds until it finally kicked in. There were no cars in front of me, otherwise I would have probably hit a car for sure. I made sure to keep my distance for the rest of my trip. On my way home from work I noticed the "check vsc system" and "brake" light were no longer on, and my brake felt back to normal.

26 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 01/24/2014

While driving to a stop on a residential street, car was normal. As soon as the brake was applied, multiple warning lights on the dash lit up, including a message stating something about a vsc system problem. The brakes seemed to fail and the brake pedal required an extreme amount of pressure to bring the vehicle to a complete stop and narrowly avoid an accident with another vehicle which had right of way at the intersection. Had the brakes not been applied with sufficient force, I believe the car would have entered the intersection and caused an accident. This is unacceptable as my then 4 month old daughter was in the car with us. Please conduct a thorough and unbiased investigation into this matter. The dealership is asking $3300 to fix this issue, this totally negates any fuel savings the hybrid functionality has offered.

27 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2014

Approximately 3 weeks ago the the "check vsc system" warning came on in our 2007 Camry Hybrid. We noticed no affect to the driving of the car, and since the owners manual said almost nothing about this warning (simply said to take it to dealer), we drove the car as usual. We then had an incident where, approaching a stop sign, the brakes failed to work at first: I had to pump the brakes 3+ times in order to make them engage. We then took it to a Toyota dealership to have a diagnosis. After spending $116 on a diagnostic (only way they would tell us the root cause) we learned that there is an accuator failure which has a repair cost of over $3000. Upon receiving this information we investigated the vsc issue online and discovered that this is a very common problem for Camry Hybrids. Our camry is a little over 5 years old and only has 57,950 miles. It is absolutely unacceptable that we should have to replace this very expensive part on a car with this few miles. Given the high frequency of complaints regarding the vsc failure it is our opinion Toyota should take the blame for their faulty part and cover the cost of the repair.

28 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 12/11/2013

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, all of the warnings lights illuminated as the brakes failed to engage. The contact also mentioned that the vehicle had to be coasted to the side of road in order to stop. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and the mechanic stated that the problem was unknown. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 68,000.

29 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2013

I was driving care and warning light came on to check the vsc system. Per Toyota service error code c1391 represented core vsc abs brake control module failure. Full unit includes abs accentuator pump assembly and computer control. This case was reported Toyota motor sales, USA, inc. Your case is filed at our headquarters office under [xxx] and file #[xxx] searching the internet, multiple incidents of this were found. Toyota has reportedly reconfigured this assembly since it has been failing, so the part to replace the current one is different than the one originally placed. . Read more...

30 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2013

When I was driving at approx. 45 miles and tried to apply brakes to stop, I realized that the brake pedal responded very slowly and almost failed to stop properly on November 25, 2013. I managed to bring the car to Toyota dealer services on that day. They could not find anything wrong. They recorded that c1202 stored in ecu, low brake fluid warning, abs pump motor operation suspe topped off brake fluid. I started hearing a creaking noise in March 2014 when I stepped on the brake. I brought the car to the Toyota dealer services on April 2, 2014. Initially they could not find anything wrong, however, I insisted on testing it further. Eventually, they found that there was a problem with an actuator in the braking system. I had to replace the actuator in the braking system and was not covered by a warranty. I had to pay over $3300 including tax. After understanding how an actuator works in braking system, I believe that the incident on November 25, 2013 must be caused by an actuator issue. I urge Toyota to recall the actuator in braking system for the following reasons. First, even trained technicians at Toyota dealer could not find an issue easily. They finally found it after they failed twice in our case (it took nearly two days). Those technicians should be informed, so they can deal with customers like us quickly and properly. Second, a sign of actuator problem can be easily neglected. A creaking noise, which caused us to bring a car to the dealer was pretty subtle. Third a brake failure may lead fatal car accidents. I was very scared when the brake almost failed to work. This may be a lucky case since I did not have a car accident.

31 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2013

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid. The contact stated that while traveling approximately 45 mph, the brakes failed to respond to deceleration attempts. The contact also mentioned that the vsc warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was found that the brake actuator had failed. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was contacted about the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 74,000.

32 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2013

Brake failure on the freeway.

33 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 11/07/2013

Brakes fail. . . The pedal brake is put so hard to push when coming a light to vsc check system. . . Im so angry to Toyota . . . But I still love my car . . . I no use my car because is not secure for my family.

34 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2013

Brake actuator failed on the car. This is a very common problem and a recall should be issued. Toyota knows about this. The oem replacement part number is a different part number than oem that the car was built with. The car thankfully wasn't damaged as it was going very slowly, and only crashed into the curb when the brake actuator completely failed and the vehicle was unable to stop.

35 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 09/19/2013

Vsc lights plus all warning lights come on. Bell sounds and brakes essentially fail. Toyota quoted $2800. 00. This issue was reported prior to my extended warranty expiring however the issue was not diagnosed by Toyota until after expiration of the warranty. This is a very dangerous issue that should be corrected free of charge.
