36 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/25/2014

My daughter detected burning plastic smell inside the car while driving on a local street, stopped the car and saw black smoke coming out from the side of the window master switch and the bottom of the driver side door. I remembered there was a recall regarding the fire hazard of the master switch and took the car to the dealership on April 15. They informed me that my car was not on the recall list and it will be my responsibility to repair it. I called and open a case (# 150409362) with their customer relationship department while I was waiting at the dealership for regular maintenance, reporting that the problem my car is experiencing proves that the recall coverage was too narrow and it is endangering all the owners that were not covered. The rep. (roy) promised to provide me an answer in 2 business days but the call back never happened. As you are the government watchdog on vehicle safety issue, I am reporting to you the potential life threatening hazard of this particular vehicle model and look forward to your assistance to have this hazard resolved by Toyota of USA.

37 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/14/2014

Warning brake light came on ( the emergency brake one) while I was out driving. The emergency brake was not engaged. Tried to get the car home and at a light when I went to take off, the car started to move then suddenly stopped in the intersection, but the car was still running. I turned on my flashers, and restarted the car. The "check vsc system" warning came on and I drove the car slowly home. The brakes were very spongy, like there was hardly any braking power.

38 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/14/2014

The brake light illuminated on my dash as I was sitting in stop and go traffic. About 10 minutes later, I was traveling about 55 mph and attempted to push my brakes to stop for a stop light. The brakes did not respond normally and it took about 4 times as long to get the car to stop compared to normal responsiveness. Simultaneously, my entire dash board lit up with warning lights. I proceeded to pull over to a safe place, going maybe 10mph, I went to park and rolled into the curb in front of my car because I could not get the brakes to stop the car. I placed the car in park. All indicator lights cleared and brakes started working again. I had the car towed to a Toyota certified mechanic, who told me that nothing had registered in the computer. The car was then driven a bit to try to recreate the problem and towed to a Toyota dealer. Eventually the c1345 and c1468 codes appeared. Toyota was contacted and recommended the accumulator assembly be replaced, brake system bleed, reset memory and calibrated linear valve. Expensive repair was completed and the car is now driving again.

39 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/28/2014

I was driving on the freeway, when the vsc and abs warning lights came on. I noticed a loss of braking power. The brakes "pop" when I depress the petal upon starting. I have noticed the brakes jerk on two occasions. I am concerned about my safety when I drive the vehicle, but cannot afford to repair it at this moment. The replacement part alone is over $2,100. On a side note, I previously owned a 2009 camry xle that had the same problem.

40 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/22/2014

Purchased 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid on 2/19/14. On 2/22/14 I was driving 52 mph on a freeway at 0 grade when check vsc system notification, abs, brake, master warning and traction control lights all came on. When attempting to break while exiting the freeway, the brakes did not work adequately when depressed to stop. I had to depress fully to the floor in order to bring the vehicle to a complete stop. It also took over 80 yards to bring the vehicle to a complete stop. I cruised through a red light due to this-I am very fortunate not to have been in an accident or worse, killed. Vehicle is now parked in driveway and is not driven. Toyota needs to address this danger to life.

41 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/14/2014

While driving I attempted brake to slow entry into uphill driveway. All lights on driver panel lit up. Brakes did not respond to slow down or stop. With full force I depressed brake pedal. Since drive way was uphill, I coasted to stop just short of garage door before crashing. This was not the first time the brakes totally failed during last couple of months. I drove to dealership for second time to have beaks inspected. The car was also making loud noise whenever brakes applied. The service manager said the brake system was examined by several technicians. Again, they found nothing wrong with brakes and told me the car was safe to drive! despite several recent brake failures, two visits to Toyota dealership, the service manager said the loud noise when braking came from the "brake actuator," which could be replaced for $2,900! quote from service invoice of March 18, 2014, follows: "tech 165630 performed diagnosis on brake noise from inside cab of vehicle. Test drove with customer to verify noise. Found that brake actuator is the cause of internal noise when at a stop while brake is applied. Suggest new brake actuator and brake flush and re-test for noise again. " service manager and technicians said, "it' safe to drive. " I do not believe it is safe to drive. Since I am a visiting hospice nurse, that car is my office. I wonder when the brakes will fail again, and when the incessant loud noise will stop. I took the car to an independent foreign car repair shop. They said, "the actuator is the source of the noise and your braking problem. However, we can't get an actuator to replace Toyota's part because it is a "locked part" in the engine. Only Toyota dealers can obtain the part, and only a Toyota dealer can install the part. " will you help?.

50 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/05/2013

Brake alert lights appeared on dash on night of 9/5/14 upon starting the vehicle. Read codes in owner's manual, and drove few blocks to home at slow speed (15 mph). On Saturday morning, 9/6/14, the incident occurred again when I was driving at about 25-30 miles per hour. Not only did the alert lights appear, but the brakes "bled" through to the floor, and it felt as if the car accelerated. Brakes worked only after pumping the brake pedal. I had the vehicle towed to service center. After diagnostics and driving for 90 miles over 4 days, the incident could not be replicated, nor did any codes appear on the computer. Vehicle was released after paying diagnostic fees. The incident occurred again on 10/2/brake lights appeared on dash, the car felt it was accelerating, and the brakes failed temporarily. My foot bled through, I pumped the pedal before brakes began to work. The vehicle was towed to dealership. Again, diagnostics did not reveal codes nor was the incident able to be replicated. Dealership replaced the brake fluid reservoir according to Toyota corporate directions. Found info online that NHTSA cited 59 complaints of brake failure for 2007-08 Camry Hybrids. Reported these incidents to Toyota corporate, who assigned a case no. Have not heard from corporate case mgr. Yet, but expect to by Monday, 10/06/14. Corporate said they do not offer a loaner vehicle while this is being addressed, but to ask dealership. Dealership said they could not provide a loaner vehicle.

52 Electrical System problem of the 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 08/21/2013

No matter where I park rodents are finding ways to get into my car. I do not keep food in the car and I have done several different things to prevent them getting in. Including moving my car around to places other than my designated covered parking spot. My dealer has told me to piss off. As has Toyota, but it would appear that Toyota switched over to more environmentally friendly insulation materials in recent years. I purchased this 2012 Toyota camry brand new. This has been going on for two years now and it would appear I'm not the only person experiencing this as is apparent from the links below. I have extensive pictures of what has happened to my car. This also hasn't been an issue for any of the other vehicles in my parking lot and my previous car was parked there for years without issue (a different manufacturer). I also park our older Toyota matrix (2003) and Toyota mr2 spyder (2000) in that spot and I have not had any issues with either vehicle. I believe our older Toyota models have very different materials that aren't as attractive to rodents. I firmly believe this has to do with Toyota's move to more environmentally friendly materials. Just tonight I finally have had enough because these creatures chewed into my trunk and were chewing up the materials in my trunk near the hybrid battery. I'm parked in a completely different area and it's still happening. This isn't a coincide! I have some serious health and safety concerns here. I was reading about another owner that had rodents get into their new Toyota prius that ate the passenger airbag and did over $10,000 in damages! this needs to be investigated ASAP. . Read more...

58 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/12/2012

I was driving at about 5mph approaching a left turn lane when I smelled a strong burning plastic odor. I saw smoke arising from my driver's door and realized it was coming from my car! I could see there was a fire in between my door when I looked at my driver's door control unit. I turned off my engine and turned on my hazard light. I waited for the traffic to clear before crossing the street with my 9 yr daughter. I called the fire department which responded within 5 minutes. When they arrived the fire had already stopped so one of the firemen drove the car to the parking lot nearby to clear traffic. The button that controls the front passenger door had melted from the fire. This very window stopped working about 3 weeks ago. But somehow from the fire, the front passenger window went down on its own. I had the car towed to local Toyota dealer. The serviceman informed me that he's never heard of such problems with Toyota. I asked for Toyota corporate number and contacted them. They Toyota representative informed me that there have been 129 cases of door fires reported to them. After inspecting the door, the Toyota dealership told me that the cause of the fire was a short in the door control unit. The cost to replace the unit is $545 and door panel is $800. I'm awaiting for Toyota corporate office to inspect the door before getting the door repaired. So far I have to be the person pursuing the matter. The dealership offers no help. Toyota corporate said it will take up to 30 days to give me the report. I informed them that it has to be faster than that because I need my car for transportation so they shortened the time to 10 days.

59 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/04/2012

While driving my car drove over a pot hole moments later the power steering went out and I was not able to control the car and nearly ran into a medium in the middle of street. I was stuck in the middle of the road. The "check hybrid system" warning came on screen, along with p/s, brake, abs. I was not able to put the car in drive. Tow truck came. The tow driver was able to release the car into drive position however the wheels were not turning. When we got to the dealership he had to force the steering wheels to move the car. Dealership says a "fuse" went out. They determined that the fuse going out was not as a result of the pot hole and they are not sure what the issue is. The service department has had my car for 12 days and was not able to recreate "the fuse" to go out.

60 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/13/2012

I started my car and started to drive down the street. I just started when smoke came from dash and left door and fire started in the left door. My arm was burned. My employer checked internet. Many other people have complained about this problem.

61 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/09/2012

A few months before the check engine light came on, I started to notice some unusual noise from a part under the hood at the far right side, behind the head light. In the beginning it just hummed very loud when I stopped the car. Then it became worse, I could hear the noise even during driving. I took the car to the dealership and they told me this was normal for hybrid car. I didn't believe them but couldn't argue with them because I know very little about cars. Then one day in early June of 2012 the check engine light came on and the brake became soft. So I immediately took it to the dealership and this time I was told that a part called an actuator needs replacement. The cost would be over $3000. I was totally shocked and couldn't believe that a car with less than 70k on it and just out of the warranty would have this kind of problem. After some negotiations with the dealership they agreed to charge me about half of the price. Toyota had a reputation for reliability and it was the reason that I bought the hybrid car. Just a few months ago, in October 2011 the water pump was also broken, which cost me about $200 after some haggling about their warranty. Obviously the actuator failure is a more serious problem and I've learned from other customers that they have had exactly the same problems (water pump and actuator) around the same mileage range. So this is clearly a common problem. I am filing this complaint in joining others to force Toyota to address these problems.

62 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/23/2012

While driving, the passenger window began to roll down on its own when I tried to roll the window back up using the master switch on the driver side, I noticed smoke coming from the button, upon closer inspection I could see actual flames underneath the button. I pulled over and turned the car off. The flame burned itself out inside the door panel. I took the car into a local Toyota deal and paid $500. 00 to repair the master switch.

65 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/14/2008

I have a 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid. I was driving on open highway in great conditions and minimal traffic. When in cruise control my car accelerated when toggled to speed up but did not stop accelerating at the set speed (75) or when the brake was tapped. (I can't remember if I toggled the coast on the cruise control). The car only stopped accelerating when I turned off the cruise control button. At that point it was going 92 mph the car immediately coasted and then the brake worked. It has not happened again with or without cruise control. The dealer cannot find anything wrong.

66 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Failure Date: 09/14/2007

While driving all of a sudden multiple warning lights appeared and brake and stability controls were disabled. Very difficult to stop. This happened before when car was new in 2007. Took it to dealer and could not replicate. They told me if it happens again to shut off the car and then restart. That works but when it happens while driving, car is difficult to control. I have since had this happen recently 4 times in Dec 2013.
