1 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 02/20/2018

My car had a recall completed on the ecm in 2011. Now in 2018 my ecm is shorting out causing my engine to shut off while I am driving. In order to start up the engine again I have to pull over, put the car in park and turn the key again. One time this happened while I was stopped. The other time this happened while I was driving. Toyota reported that because the recall had already been completed there was nothing they could do and the repair had to be completed at my expense. The only way to make my car safe to drive again is to have a new ecm installed.

2 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Corolla. The contact was driving approximately 5 mph when the entire instrument panel illuminated and the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. As the contact was reversing into a parking space, the vehicle stalled again. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that a catastrophic computer failure had occurred. The repairs were performed under warranty. The current and failure mileage was approximately 9,200. Updated 01/18/11 after the incident, the consumer contacted the manufacturer via phone. 3 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2010

On August 11, 2010, while driving our 2007 Toyota Corolla at about 40 mph the engine suddenly stopped running. We coasted and were able to get pulled off the road safely. The engine would not restart. We called our Toyota dealer service department and explained what was going on. They said there was a problem with the computer in the 2007 Corollas and that was probably what we were experiencing. We were instructed to have the car towed to the dealer and if that was the case, I. E. , computer failure, the tow charge and the repair would be covered under the vehicle warranty, they would hold a service spot open for us that very day and it would be taken care of when we arrived. They quoted a repair time of about 1 hour. We had the car towed to the dealer. It was a computer failure. The repair was completed in about the stated time. If this had happened on the highway in a construction zone where both sides of the road are lined with concrete abutments and there is no place to pull off our outcome may have been very different. It is frightening to think what could have happened to us with a stalled car in a highway construction zone with no way to get out of the flow of traffic. I think the fact that the car can just stop running while being driven has been underplayed.

4 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer. The vehicle was repaired by replacing the ecm yet the failure recurred. The contact stated the vehicle began to jerk violently before stalling. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer for further repairs. The VIN was not available. The current and failure mileage was 19,000.

5 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2010

2007 Toyota Corolla stalled on the evening of 15 Apr 2010. The next morning we had the car towed to our Toyota dealer (where the vehicle was purchased). When I called the service advisor to tell him the vehicle was on the way and described what happened, he immediately stated the "OH, it's the computer" as if this was a fairly common occurrence. The repair was made at no charge but we were fortunate that it happened in front of our house and I was able to park the car on the street. There have been no more occurrences.

6 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 03/12/2010

On Friday, March 12, 2010, I was driving my 2007 Toyota Corolla home on my lunch hour and my car stalled twice on a sharp turn. I nearly lost control on the turn because the steering became (quite unexpectedly) very difficult. At first I didn't realize the car had stalled, causing the steering problem. That was the first time the car stalled. I immediately took it to my local Toyota dealership. They said it could be a computer problem, battery, alternator, etc. , and they'd run diagnostics on it. After being there over four hours, all they said was that the battery was "marginal" but it took a charge. I asked about putting in a new battery and the service rep said he didn't want to do that. I wasn't charged for the diagnostic or battery charge. I believe, now that I've heard about the stall issue today in the news, that this problem is why I wasn't charged for the diagnostic test; however, I was not informed there have been problems with stalling.

7 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 02/23/2010

2007 Toyota Corolla sometimes won't start. Turns over fast with starter, but won't start. Then, the next try, it does. May be related to the same problem as stalling. Also the steering feels too stiff, makes it hard to keep in the lane when it is windy.

8 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Corolla le. While driving at speeds of less than 25 mph the vehicle stalled and the driver was able to restart the vehicle and drive home safely. The next day, the vehicle stalled again. Within 20 minutes, he was able to restart the vehicle and drive home. Within minutes, he was notified by the fire department that the vehicle was on fire. The front end of the vehicle was totally engulfed in flames. The fire department was able to extinguish the fire; however, the vehicle was destroyed. The contact was unable to speak with Toyota of America. The failure and current mileages were under 14,200.

9 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 12/18/2009

2007 Toyota Corolla stalled a traffic light in downtown rush-hour traffic. Would start back up, but only idle for 30 sec. And die again. Had to have towed to dealer, who diagnosed the problem as the engine control module (ecm). This appears to be a way to common problem as discussed on the Toyota forums. Seems to occur with mid-30k mileage. Mine had 34,800 miles.

10 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 07/29/2009

2007 Toyota Corolla ce, purchased in July 2007, approx. 15,000 miles. On 7/29/09, car stalled to a complete stop while driving. Luckily, I was not driving on the highway (I-95) as I normally do. Stalled on my block after I made turn into street. After a minute, was able to restart with minimal engine power to travel another 100 feet. Had to repeat this until I reached my driveway. Car was towed to dealership. They told me that this was a defect (wire for the computer dislodged or fell off and caused the problem). There was no indication that this was going to happen. No time to pull off to side of the road. Only "check engine" light appeared when trying to restart engine. This is a very dangerous situation and without some indication that this will happen, there could have been a serious accident resulting in injury or worse. Dealer replaced the part that day.

11 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 02/27/2009

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Corolla. While driving at approximately 10 mph the vehicle stalled. After approximately 30 minutes she was able to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where she was informed there was a failure within the computer system, the vehicle was repaired. The failure has not recurred. The failure mileage was 17,728 and the current mileage was 34,000.

12 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2008

My 2007 Toyota Corolla stalled while driving on more than one occasion. I was told by the dealer it was the computer and it resulted in the dealer replacing the computer. Luckily it was under warranty. On one of the occasions, however, I was on a major highway with my 7 year old daughter. Not a safe situation.

13 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2007

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that the computer in the vehicle failed and had to be replaced. The computer is related to the gears and power windows. Whenever the gears are being shifted, the vehicle would shake severely. The contact had to get new brakes and rotors installed four times since the vehicle was purchased. In addition, the vehicle received numerous alignments because the steering wheel would shake when the brakes were applied. Two sensors also caused the engine to stop running. The vehicle has been taken to the dealer for repair numerous times, but the failures still persist. All of the failures began five months after the vehicle was purchased. The failure mileage was 4,000 and current mileage was 60,000.

14 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2006

I saw article about 2006 Toyota Corolla stalling problems. We have a 2007 that has experienced a minor version of this problem since new. At low speed <30mph engine rpm will randomly drop for a few seconds then come back up. Does not appear to occur at idle. Problem is worse when cold. Did not think it serious until I saw the article. The only thing we have done is had our mechanic check for engine codes, no codes reported. We also have a 2008 Corolla that does experience this problem.
