Three years after buying new car engine light came on, got it checked at dealer was told it's p0741. I was told by service advisor that there was "no recall and if it ain't broke don't fix it. " I asked what it was, was told it's converter, but not to worry if no problems. I've tried calling Toyota for several years now, to no avail. I still own my Corolla and the engine light is still on. . . . . Glad I found this website.

7 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2016

I have been experiencing sudden stops of the vehicle while driving that is likely related to the ecm. A case has been registered with Toyota national head quarter suggesting to call Toyota at 800-331-4331. I called and spoke with [xxx]. She refused to provide any help although I provided her the case number r. She handled the case very rudely and unprofessional, kept me on hold for several minutes and then gave me the same case number with no further action and ended the call. Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

8 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2015

This happened about four weeks apart with two different drivers under similar conditions. We were slowing to stop at a stop sign traveling 5-10 mph and when we applied the brake, the engine reved up. When it happened to me the the car wouldn't stop when I applied the brake so I put the car into neutral and thus avoided hitting car ahead of me. I took the vehicle to my local Toyota dealer. They had it for a day and half and said they could find nothing wrong. They said I should remove my after market car mat ( which I have) and suggested that both drivers had applied the brake and accelorator at the same time. I think this is highly unlikely as my foot isn't wide enough to do both unless my foot is nearly off the brake. The car mat in question has been the car for 6 plus years and is a custom made one which does not slip.

9 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/25/2015

I started my car and immediately upon starting the engine rpm's went from 0-5000 rpm and would not come back down. I shut off the car and waited a few minutes and tried again. . . . Same thing. This happened several times. I am afraid that this could happen at any time while I'm actually driving the vehicle in which case there could be a very bad accident due to the throttle sticking open if that's what the cause is.

10 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/27/2013

I would like to check and see if my vehicle had a recall. The part is called the timing chain.

11 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/19/2012

I was driving uphill on a one-way street in downtown when I saw and heard the sparks about 1 minute apart from each other on the front left side between the crack of the hood, the car lost power and turned off. I started it again, and it only moved about two feet and turned off. The car started to roll back, and the steering wheel locked making it impossible to steer. An unknown driver who was in front of us was merging to park to the right told us to get off because the car was on fire, next the smoke was visible. It began to smell like burned plastic, and then we saw the thick grey smoke coming through the crack of the hood. I pulled the hand emergency brake to stop the car from rolling back down any further. I opened the hood we all got out of the car. I went back inside the car to unhooked the harness off my dog. I was so scared that I couldn't release my dog, and my son's girlfriend helped me, and we got my dog out. My son, his girlfriend and I got the super-size large drink we just bought at mcdonald's and dumped on the fire with the help of the unknown man who got a bucket of some liquid possibly water from the hotel next to us, and the fire was out. I was so terrifying of how rapid my car caught on fire and how fast everything happening. My car was well maintained by Toyota regularly, and the mechanic told us that there is no known reason why the fire started. Toyota has replaced the defected computer twice, the transmission once, I had two electrical problems in the past, and I do not feel safe in a car with so many manufacturers defective parts. Unexplainable fire, is the response I got from the insurance and repair shop which does not make me feel safe to drive a car that could caught fire at any time.

12 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2011

We were notified last summer/fall that there was a safety recall on some 2005-2008 Toyota Corolla and matrix models. The letter states that we would be notified when parts became available and that due to the possible failure of the ecm -engine control module -(cracks on welds) the engine may stop working while the car is being driven. Therefore we have not been able to drive it except at slow speeds considering safety and hoping our car was not one that fell under the recall. Considering we never got another letter (expected Nov 2010) we believed we must be exempt from the recall, but yesterday we received the notice that the parts are available so we went in to our local Toyota dealer seeger Toyota in st robert mo where it was confirmed our car falls under this serious safety recall. The dealer now is saying they don't have the part available and they will "call" us when they have it in. How long is acceptable ? does someone have to die before Toyota follows through? now that we know this involves our vehicle I don't feel good about operating it. What are our recourses under the law?.

13 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2011

I tried repeatedly to have the engine control module replaced in my 2007 Corolla as I was instructed to do in three safety recall notices. I brought the car to Toyota of el cajon the first time on June 28th after receiving a notice that stated that the parts were ready. The part was (apparently) ordered by Toyota of el cajon, and I was asked to leave my car overnight. The next day I was asked to pick up the car because the part had not come in. I was told to wait to make an appointment until the part came in. No one called me to schedule the appointment. I went online around July 18th and scheduled an appointment for July 25th. I brought my car in and waited 1 hour. The service manager then came and told me that the part was not there, and that he would need to re-order it. He told me he would call me and that if I didn't hear from him in a week to call him. I called him two weeks later and he told me that the part was still not in. He told me he would call me to follow up, but never did. I haven't heard back from Toyota of el cajon since then. I filed an incident report (110816-000310) on Toyota's website on August 16, 2011, but I have not received a response. I also tried calling Toyota's customer experience center today, August 23, but the call center is down and I could not get through.

14 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2010

The power died when I was on a very busy thoroughfare at rush hour. I had to cross several lanes of traffic and was barely able to crawl to the shoulder. I was towed to a repair shop and was told the engine computer module was defective. I understand Toyota is aware of this problem, but has yet to give recall details to their customers or to their dealerships. What are they waiting for? I could have easily been in an accident or caused one. If Toyota won't move on their own, please force them to act. Lives are at risk!.

15 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2010

2007 Toyota Corolla s smokes due to oil sludge, vehicle smokes when first starting and periodically during the day. I took vehicle to dealer and was told that the engine was sludged due to poor maintenance, it has come to my attention that there are 3245 other Toyota owners who were told the same thing, "how can this be true" ? this clearly looks to be a defect that Toyota does not want to take responsibility for, and this looks to be a dangerous situation for Toyota owners. I heard of engines failing because of this issue, and report of fires and engines seizing while driving on highways, and Toyota will do nothing to fix the problem. My vehicle is still under warranty and they are not honoring that warranty.

16 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/23/2010

My 2007 Toyota Corolla had trouble starting, then died twice. On the third attempt, it started and sounded normal. I was on a drive home with my grandsons. I called my dealer and was advised to go to a dealer near my location. They found that there was no communication with the engine computer. They replaced the computer for no charge since it was under warranty. When I further questioned them, they said this is a known defect of 2007 and 2008 Toyota Corollas and they keep the necessary part in stock. When I asked why I wasn't informed about this or why there was no recall, they said not all of these cars had a problem so Toyota determined that a recall would be too expensive. I had a 2 hour delay, far from home, with my grandsons (ages 2 and 6 months) because Toyota saw no need to prevent this from happening.

17 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2009

Re my 2007 Corolla ce. Driving with my husband in my 2007 Corolla in 8/09 was making right turn out of residential subdivision onto heavy traffic roads during rush hour. With no warning engine literally stopped dead as I was moving into lane and perhaps 20% of way into lane. Engine had been running fine before that with absolutely no indication of problem. Fortunately--when engine stopped dead--front of car was not fully in lane into which I was turning and oncoming traffic could move around me. Turned off ignition, let set for perhaps 60 seconds; was able to re-start engine; car started and I was able to make it home, driving 1. 2 miles. Garaged overnight; car started next morning but died halfway out of garage. After 5-10 minutes started again but died after driving 30 yards. Had towed to dealer; learned there'd been a "dealer's technical service bulletin in 9/08, TSB ego42-07, in re defective part, to quote service mgr "bad batch of ecm's in "some" 2007 Toyotas. " dealers were supposed to have informed customers of this defective ecm when they brought Corollas in for service. Please note that I had this Corolla serviced at 2 different Toyota dealerships between 9/08 and 8/09, date of incident, and neither informed me of this TSB. My husband and I could have been killed in this incident and, since I transport my 4 yr old nephew, he, too, had been at risk. Dealership rep shrugged . . . Could have cared less. This defect should never have been a mere TSB . . . There should have been a recall and Corolla owners should have been notified. Online research at the time indicated that there had been Corollas which had died at highway speed, so we were probably fortunate. This could have been catastrophic for us.

18 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2009

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Corolla. While driving approximately 45 mph, the engine idled highly. Suddenly, the engine began to rev excessively followed by a low power response. There were no warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. The driver pulled over into a parking lot and turned off the engine. She restarted the vehicle after ten minutes and it resumed normal operation. The failure occurred on five separate occasions and the vehicle was taken to the dealer four different times. The technician was unable to duplicate the failures. The failure still persists. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 25,000 and current mileage was 27,000.

19 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2008

I have a 2007 Toyota Corolla s, and I believe there is a manufacturer design flaw that leads to excessive debris and rocks that gain access through the front of the vehicle and will ultimately puncture holes in the ac condenser. Since I have owned this vehicle this is the second occurrence of having a punctured hole in my ac condenser. Since they say it is caused by a rock the dealership accepts no fault and the warranty does not cover it. They charge $728 dollars to repair the condenser. I am upset because I feel that Toyota knows that this problem exists and have done very little to resolve the issue. My car only has 22,000 miles on it yet this has happened twice. Very dissatisfied with the design of the vehicle which I feel is the cause. The car should have enough protection in the front end that a rock would not be able to make contact with the ac condenser so easily.

20 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2008

I own a 2007 Toyota Corolla I bought new. With 17,000+ miles on it the engine control module failed. This event occurred while driving on a heavily traveled road at 45 mph. The car's speed immediately dropped to 15 mph. I avoided accident and injury, but was horrified at the thought I could have been on the freeway when this happened. The next day I had it towed to the dealer. I found it odd that the service writer didn't even blink about this, and that a new engine control module was readily available. The experience made me think this must be a common occurrence.

21 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2007

The 2007 Toyota Corolla (ce) car engine didn't pick up speed in highway until pulling car over to shoulder and restarted the car. This situation has happened three times yesterday when I driving it with my family on highway I-95 in jacksonville florida. Next day I went Toyota dealer to find out the issue. They hooked the engine with the computer but didn't find the problem. I fear this will happen in the future and may cause life threaten situation.
