37 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2010

While driving my 2009 Toyota Corolla is slow moving traffic, maybe 20mph I was braking and realized that I was getting close to the Toyota tundra in front of me. And it frightened me because I almost hit the truck. I had to press my brake pedal all the way to the floor it didn't seem like it was grabbing and it made an awful noise and I stopped just shy of hitting the tundra. I made a call to Toyota last year but I wasn't one of the states that they considered to get ambient low temperatures. Well we got into the low 20's and teens many of nights and last night was in the 30's with frost on the car. How cold does it have to be? I have had my washer fluid freeze up a few times.

38 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2010

Just got my recalled Toyota 09 gas pedal fixed ( 02/03/10) and ran through a red light (02/08/10) due to brakes not working and sudden acceleration of vehicle. Luckily there wasn't a car in front of me or anyone going through the intersection. I was not driving very fast and tried to stop at light, I was pushing the brake pedal and it just felt like it wasn't grabbing and I had it pushed to the floor and then my car made an accelerating sound like I revved it up and I went through the intersection.

39 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2010

My car is a 2009 Toyota Corolla which is on the recall list. I had gone to them two day before the actual recall, because each time I would encounter a down slope or go down a hill, my car would sound like it was idling up and grinding as if it wanted to take off. It had been service a week before this happened; however, the sound of my brakes scared me so I took it back in twice. They still insisted nothing was wrong with it. Then, I took it back the next day after the recall, and I was treated very rudely by the service people as well as the service manager. Nothing has been done since then. I drive it daily with a prayer, because I was told that if my VIN number begin with a "j" it is not on the recall list. However, I am very afraid or paranoid about driving it daily and especially on rainy days. When it rains my brakes squeak and sound as if they or letting out air or a balloon being rubbed against your hand. I have called several times and received no response. I have never had any problems with universal Toyota until now. I was a faithful customer who has had six Toyota cars that I thoroughly enjoyed, but this situation has cause me to consider other options. I am unsure of the actual date, but it was definitely the day after the recall.

40 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2010

About 5:30pm on Thursday evening (2/4/10), I was driving home n on silver lake blvd & 36 st. It was lightly snowing, the streets were wet and slippery, and I was driving under 15/mph going downhill. As I pressed the brakes, the car went faster, and did not stop until I badly hit the car in front of me and went over the curb. My car is a 2009 Toyota Corolla. About 2-3 months ago, Toyota sent me a recall notice for the brakes, much before the nationwide Toyota recall hit the media. And now, even after I did recall a few months ago, this is the second time that such a brake-related incident has happened to me ever since the recall. I feel that this accident is related to another brake defect of the newly-replaced/altered brakes, and would kindly ask for it to be further investigated.

41 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2010

The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Corolla. While driving 5 mph with the brake pedal engaged, the vehicle would not stop. The brake pedal began moving back and forth uncontrollably until the contact firmly engaged the brake pedal. The failure has occurred 6 times. The dealer stated that they would repair the accelerator pedal the following day and then diagnose the braking system. The vehicle will be repaired. The failure mileage was 9700 and current mileage was 9740. Updated 03/10/10. Updated 08/18/10.

42 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2010

While driving our 2009 Toyota Corolla on a slick, snow-covered roadway, a vehicle in front of my wife stopped rather quickly. She was traveling about 15-20 miles per hour, upon braking, the anti-lock brakes kicked in and seemed to completely disengage the brakes. The anti-lock brakes fired slowly, the pedal strongly resisted being pressed and the car kept on going, she had to swerve into a gas station to avoid rear-ending the vehicle in front of her. Two days later, it snowed again, and I was able to reproduce the problem on our street. Driving at a speed of 20-25 mph, I quickly applied the brakes and experienced the same resistance to pressing of the brakes, the same slow firing of the anti-lock system, and the same feeling of complete disengagement of the brakes. The car took nearly 120 feet to stop (this is a very gross estimate based on property sizes). After this experience, we tested the brakes on our Toyota rav 4 on the same road and got significantly better performance - the vehicle stopped in less than 60 feet (again, gross estimate) and did not exhibit the resistance to pressing or the slow firing of the abs. Upon taking the vehicle to a dealer, we were informed that everything tested fine and there was no problem and nothing to fix. The problem recurred again in similar conditions two days later. The dealer has offered to allow us to bring the car in on a day when a rep from Toyota will be present, but I feel that they do not believe us, and am not optimistic that they will be able to diagnose the cause.

43 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/22/2010

When braking to come to a stop, if there is any type of imperfection in the roadway, such as a small pothole, when hitting the pothole and braking at the same time, it causes the front end to get loose and the vehicle to swerve sometimes severely.

44 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2010

This is for a 2009 Toyota Corolla le. Sometimes, after I hit the brakes, the car seems to stop gradually and the front wheels tend to shake heavily. (almost seems like the wheels are going to fall off). I took it to the dealer and they said that it could have been the abs kicking in. I am still not satisfied by the dealers remedy. They basically did nothing. The problem happens mostly on wet surfaces and light snow. But because of that, every time I hit the brakes, I have to pray the car to stop.

45 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2010

The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Corolla. He stated that the electronic steering wheel became difficult to control and resistant when turning the wheel in either direction. He also stated that the vehicle would bear to the left or right often times without driver intent. The dealer was contacted and they test drove the vehicle with the owner at approximately 35 mph and verified that the failure does exist. When depressing the brakes at various speeds, the brakes would feel as if they were not engaging, then they would immediately respond and lunge the vehicle forward. No repairs were made to correct the failures. The failure and current mileages were under 13,300.

46 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2010

While applying the brakes (2009 Toyota Corolla le 38,000miles) on the snow or slick condition road the wheels would constantly stop/rotate as soon I would press on the brake pedal and prevented me from stopping until the car slid into a dry spot, curb, or snow bank. It seemed as if the brakes were over sensitive causing the brakes to immediately respond with the constant stop/rotate. For a couple of snow falls (09/10 season) I dealt with this by slowing down and using the brakes way before my intended stops. On 1/7/10 as I was coming over a slight decline I pressed on the brake in response to a van about 150 feet in front of me at a red light which caused the car rear end to whip around to the front across oncoming traffic land into a snow bank. At that point the car was stuck and had to be pulled out. Although the tires still had sufficient tread on them (no balding) I replaced all the tires. That stopped the over sensitive reaction with the brakes.

47 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/23/2009

I am the owner of 2009 Toyota Corolla. I have to press my brake pedal hard and almost all the way down to make my car to stop. I called my dealership about the problem but the dealership want to charge me $89 to look at it. I called Toyota customer service line but got no result. I am also smelling burning odor coming from my vents when I turn the heat on. I called the dealership and all they want is to charge me money to look at my problem.

48 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/13/2009

Few problems with my Corolla 09. Power steering problems, feels very loose and turns by itself sometimes, luckily so far no accidents but is a real issue. Brakes makes a noise when reversing or sometimes going forward, I have told the dealer about both issues, but so far they says it's up to Toyota standards.

49 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/09/2009

I brought my Corolla 2009 in Nov 2008 . In Feb 2009 I took it to lansing ,mi dealer saying brakes went down to the floor. I had hard time to stop my car. They send me back saying nothing is wrong. There was a brake recall few months later. I am again facing the same problem. I avoided banging my car twice . I took my car to Toyota dealer . The service personnel instead of looking for problem said he can't help me put on the brakes as it winter. I told them I want to talk to his service manager. The service manager assured me that he will check the problem. The rear brakes were not aligned properly . Frankly I can't trust that car. I feel that cars 2 basic functionalities went wrong. 1. Brake 2. Gas pedal. If Toyota can't get 2 basic things right they should stop making cars.

50 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/08/2009

I purchased a 2009 Toyota Corolla in November 2009. I had issues with the brakes slipping to the floor 2 weeks after purchase. This would happen when I would try to slow the car down or come to a stop. It happened sporadically. I had many near collisions and went off the road into snowbanks several times to avoid hitting other cars. Toyota kept saying nothing is wrong with the car after checking the brakes. In September, I took the car in for the hydraulic service brake recall. This did not fix the problem. On December 8 & 9 the brakes went to the floor twice when I tried to stop at stop signs. I almost got killed avoiding other cars at intersections. Once again, the dealership tried to duplicate the situation and found nothing wrong with the car. I told them I am terrified to drive an unsafe car which will end up crashing at some point from a faulty brake system. They said they can not do anything. I said the recall part is not effective and the consumers need to be aware. All I asked for was a new Corolla and I would continue all my payments. I do not want to drive an unsafe car on the road (nor should other Toyota owners). The dealership is in burlington vermont.

51 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/27/2009

Driving north bound on I-90 in lane 2 from the right side, approaching near the north cumberland Ave over pass at approximately 50 mph, when it appeared the auto in front was slowing down I applied the brakes and they did not engage or slow the vehicle down. With vehicle 1 rapidly gaining on the auto in front of it, I switched over to lane 1 quickly to avoid striking the vehicle from behind, when the brakes did not stop the vehicle, the speed continued to increase, when it appeared I was going to hit the wall to the right of the safety lane, I cut back into lane 1 and the car, now going at an uncontrollable higher rate of speed, made almost a complete left across all 3 lanes striking vehicle 2 in the 3rd lane on the right rear door, when spinning off of vehicle 2 the left rear of vehicle 1 struck the wall making the vehicle come to a complete stop.

52 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

Brakes do not respond on time. After pressing the brake, car did not stop on time and hit a small pole in front of the store and had frontal bumper damage. At first I did not know the reason. Now I know the recall on Toyotas due to brake defects.

53 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/26/2009

2009 Toyota Corolla. Consumer states that they have been experiencing a rapid succession of jolting movements coming from underneath the brake pedal of the vehicle when the brakes were applied the brake system vacuum port was serviced.

54 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/22/2009

My vehicle was involved in an accident and I belive that the manufacturer was at fault. I had my vehicle inspected for brake problems numerous times by the dealer and it was always said nothing was wrong. Well on Sep. 22,2009 my mother was driving my car while I was passenger and she says it would not stop. Now that I see others are experiencing the same problems I want the manufacturer to be held responsible because I have been dealing with these problems for two years now and it finally seems like something is going to be done about it. It took my car and who knows how many others. I gave the dealership many opportunities to remedy the situation at my expence.

55 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/22/2009

I own a 2009 Toyota Corolla that has been giving me problems since the day one. I have been in the dealership many times for my brake problems and they have been unable to resolve the issue. On Sep. 28, 2009 the vehicle was involved in an accident my mother was driving and she says it would not stop. Now that I am aware that others are experiencing this problem I am stepping forward to let everyone know that their not alone.

56 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/27/2009

Tl-the contact owns a 2009 Toyota Corolla. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign numbers: 14v168000 (air bags), 12v491000 (visibility) and 09v338000 (service brakes, hydraulics) however, the parts to do the repairs was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repairs. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Sg.

57 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/24/2009

Dear sirs, I had a mechanical failure caused vehicle collision where two safety hazards should call public alert. On Aug. 24, 2009 as I traveled on highway 93 south, I saw the vehicle in front of me took a sudden slow-down or stop, about 30 feet in distance, even as I floored the brake pedal, my 2009 Toyota Corolla did not have any brake function at all, even not a resistance force at the pedal. My vehicle reared another vehicle inside the tunnel of 93 south, under normal travel situation: road surface and lighting. And then before the deployed airbag from the driving column could have blocked my body movement forward , it exploded, the inside of my vehicle filled with smoke and funny smells. Fortunately, nobody got serious injured in the collision. Since my Corolla is a new car under 4900 miles, this was the only time I experience the sudden mechanical failures. My insurance company, metropolitan property, has inspected the vehicle, but did not specify any mechanical failures. Toyota north America also had their personnel inspected the vehicle upon received my report to them, but they may not take any responsibility to pass the information to the public, as there is also liability issue within. So far no repair work has been done to the vehicle, yet. The simultaneous failures of both brakes and airbag could be very serious safety hazards, please take note of this case and make it available to the public. If possible, I would appreciate it if you could, or let some third-party mechanic to, have my vehicle inspected. Thanks.

58 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/16/2009

I started up my 2009 Toyota Corolla, then with my foot on the brake, I put the cars gear into reverse. The car started backing up, accelerating uncontrollably. The brake would not stop the car. I never touched the accelerator from the time I started the car. The car stopped when it ran into another parked vehicle. I took the car to the Toyota dealership in bradford, PA. The service manager told me that there was nothing wrong with the car. He said that I stepped on the brake too hard and that disables the anti-lock brakes. They refused to look at the car. There were no floormats in my vehicle. The Toyota dealership will not look at my car because they say that it is not covered by the recall because its VIN number begins with a j, which means it was manufactured in japan. I am scared to drive it because I have already had the acceleration problem once and crashed.

59 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/19/2009

The 2009 Toyota Corolla I have has the similar brake problem like the prius, the car does not slow down at first when the brake was pressed, there is always a delay that causes a longer stop distance.

60 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/27/2009

This complaint is being filed on by me as a result of the terrible safety problems I have encountered since purchasing my 2009 Toyota Corolla new from performance Toyota dealership in fairfield, ohio. On 3/27/2009 my Corolla sped up on its own causing me to strike a parked vehicle, and injuring myself. I called the walton, kentucky plant about this the following day. Their advise to me was to take my vehicle to the dealership where I had bought it for an inspection. On April 1, 2009 I did this very thing and I was told by their mechanics that everything on my car was fine and that it was probably just operator of the vehicles fault. Leaving the dealership worried, and concerned I put my Toyota Corolla in the body shop for repairs. Ten days later after having my vehicle inspected by their mechanics and having my body repairs made the same thing occurred to me again when on 4/11/2009 my Toyota Corolla accelerated upon its own again striking a parked vehicle causing additional injuries to myself as well as this time I was cited by the police, my insurance carrier raised my rates to nearly double the usual amount, and I am paying for a car that I am terrified at this point to be driving. When I requested print outs from the dealership of the mechanical inspection that was made between auto accidents they became very agitated with me, and my son to the point of complete rudeness. On 22/4/2010 they made a correction on my Toyota Corolla to make an attempt to fix the sudden acceleration problem, and told me to remove my drivers side floor mat that I would be receiving a new one for safety reasons. I did this but still as of yet have not received any such floor mat for my car. On 5/19/2010 my son and I took my Corolla in for an oil change and tire rotation when we were told of a brake recall that my car needed which would only take 40 minutes to accomplish. I told them to fix it please. I have complied in every way.

61 Service Brakes problem

62 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/22/2009

In early 2009 , one winter night, I was returning home after a night out, it has snowing and the temperature was below zero. My driveway is about 50 feet long and covered with snow and may be some ice and therefore become slippery. From the curb, I accelerate slightly to get over onto the driveway, and then I brake immediately once on the driveway. This is when I really suddenly for no reason the car is accelerating quickly and is going to hit my garage. I brake hard and find the car continue accelerating until it hit the back of my stand alone garage and cracked a few 2 by 4 pillars. My car suffer no damage. When I reported this to Toyota online, I got no response from Toyota canada other than this, I am very happy above my Corolla and I don't have any other brake problem since then.

63 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2009

The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated while sitting idle at a traffic stop with the brakes depressed, the vehicle abnormally accelerated and crashed into the vehicle ahead of hers. The contact was able to drive the vehicle after the crash. There were no reported injuries. The dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. There were unknown repairs made to the vehicle. Following repairs, the contact noticed that when braking to a stop, the vehicle would abnormally vibrate excessively. The dealer replaced the routers on the vehicle however, the contact believed the failure to be associated with NHTSA campaign id number: 09v338000 (service brakes, hydraulic: power assist: vacuum). The contact stated the brakes were inoperable during the unintended acceleration failure and believed the brakes were also defective. The failure mileage was 5,000 and the current mileage was 16,000.

64 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/16/2009

We bought a 2009 Toyota Corolla in oct of 2008. Noticed the touchy steering, but was told that was normal by the Toyota dealership. My daughter was driving it on a side street in huntington, wv when she hit a pot hole or a manhole traveling at about 15 to 20 mph. The steering locked up and she hit a parked car. It broke the abs wiring harness and caused $10,994. 79 damage to car. We then found out that the tires were bald at 15,000 miles and the brakes were very thin. Toyota had just service the car at 13,000 miles and did not tell me the tires or the brakes were bad. We do not know exactly what caused the steering to lock up. The repair shop could not tell us either due to the extensive damage.

65 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2009

The description I am sending in may or may not be connected to the Toyota recalls for brakes or gas pedal sticking. My experience is that everytime I step on the brake pedal I feel something move under my feet. Sometimes it feels like something is rolling under the carpet. My floor mats are snapped into place so I know that they are not moving. I plan on taking my car to a Toyota dealer on Thursday Feb. 18, 2010. This feeling has been there since I bought the car back in August of 2009. My car is a 2009 Toyota Corolla le. They say because it was made in japan I do not have anything to worry about. We will see.

66 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2009

I have two related concerns about the 2009 Corolla s with traction and stability control. It is my belief that there is an unresolved software issue with the abs / stability system. I noticed the first issue at only 6000 miles, right after my second service at the Toyota dealer. They performed the brake manifold recall related to NHTSA campaign id number: 09v338000 during that service. The front brakes began to shake violently during braking from 65 mph. It felt like the rotors were severely warped when this occurred. This does not occur every time. The Toyota dealer examined the vehicle and they stated they could not find any issues and would not test the vehicle above 55 mph. Each time I took the vehicle in for a scheduled service, the problem would suddenly get worse again. They like to tighten the rear brakes each time. I asked them to leave the rear brakes alone and did not see the normal aggravation of the front disk pulsation issue. I do still see severe vibration periodically. This symptom appears to occur most when the ambient external temperature is lower than 2 degrees below freezing and all the lights are fully lit. Due to the sporadic nature of the vibration, my concern is that the abs system is unable to keep up or there is a voltage fluctuation with all the lights on that triggers the system to pulse the brakes intentionally. I have found others are seeing the same type of issue and noticed that you have a similar request odi id number: 10359202 from someone that has the same year and model with many identical VIN number digits. I currently have the original parts on the vehicle, if you need to inspect them. My secondary concern occurred when I tested the emergency (hand) brake on a long straight road. The stability control system threw the vehicle from side to side violently which could easily cause complete loss of control. This appears to be a software issue due to an unforeseen but plausible condition.

67 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2008

Trying to make a u turn out of a parking lot, car straghtened itself out and sped up brakes did not work and we went over a curb and down an embankment and hit a tree . This only occured once. We had over $4000 in damageson a car with less than 200 miles on the speedometer.

68 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/08/2008

Dangerous car to drive. Vehicle drifts hard left when driving in a straight line. Problem is made worse when driving next to a large trailer truck with crosswinds. Car steering has a large loose, dead center feel disconnected to the road. When turning, the power steering does not move the steering wheel to the center. The driver has to manually correct the wheel every time. I purchased the car "new" from the dealer. I still own it today, and the steering is just as bad. In bad weather, the problem is absolutely terrible. The dealer has no solution.

69 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2008

Repeated phone calls to Toyota customer service and to two dealerships were dismissed as normal. . . When the 2009 Corolla is stopped and the brake pedal presses the pedal travels approximately two to three inches down towards the floor board. Again two dealerships and Toyota customer service state it is normal.

70 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2008

I was driving straight on the mass pike in framingham, MA, and my car began to lose control. I neither hit anything nor did I lose control of the car. The brakes stopped working and I could not turn the steering wheel. This resulted in my car swerving out of control, hitting the barrier and flipping over. My car landed directly on top of 2 of the 6 air bags I have in my car, and not one airbag deployed after barrel rolling my car. My car is now totaled and I am undergoing physical therapy for severe whiplash to my back and neck. My insurance company has considered the accident a human error, yet I did nothing to cause the accident. My friend who has been a car mechanic for over 20 years feels that it was a mechanical flaw on the vehicle, and does not see how the accident could have been caused by me. I would like to talk to someone regarding a possible manufacturer's error on my new but totaled 09 Toyota Corolla.
