When the vehicle is sitting stationary and turned off for any given length of time in weather that is below freezing and then the ignition switch is then turned on, abs, vsc, and traction control lights come on and none of their corresponding functions are operable. Tires go into full lock up skid without abs and there is no vsc or traction control. The problem will not cease until the part causing the problem has reached a temperature of above approximately 32 degrees fahrenheit. The problem may cease while driving or when stationary, but the consistent point at which it is remedied is when the outside temperature is above 32 degrees fahrenheit.

6 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2017

I haven't followed up on rcmn-10v017-5275 as I hadn't noticed a problem living in an area with level streets. However, when trying to park or leave a parking space on an incline or decline it is a problem. When moving in or out of a parking, I noticed that my gas pedal is very sensitive. It lurches my car quickly forward. This is not about my parking technique. Someone else familiar with parking on these streets is concerned about the car's acceleration. Is this issue related to needing a remedy to the above recall notice. If yes, can I get this fixed for free even though my notice has expired? what do you suggest.

8 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2017

During the operation of the vehicle on a normal surface street during morning commute through city streets following traffic at speeds not exceeding 35 mph the vehicle seemed to have accelerated (sped up) during the application of the brake causing the vehicle to strike the vehicle in front of it. The damage to the vehicle struck was not visible due to the slow speed, but it did cause minor damage to the vehicle in question. During the event the driver perceived acceleration at the time of the application of the brakes and the sound associated with the anti-lock features being engaged. At the end of the incident the brake pedal was depressed all the way down to the floor. This is very concerning since the reaction of the vehicle was opposite of the driver command. The vehicle is part of the Toyota Smart stop company recall, but the software update was not done since it is considered optional for the owner to do. Based on the reasons for the recall it is concerning that the condition it is addressing may have occurred. Because this report is based on driver perception I only request that the Smart stop recall be addressed and possibly mandated to ensure that the issue is from the software that owners will take the time to have it accomplished.

9 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/15/2016

At approx 11:30 pm on July 15th 2016, my fiancé, myself and 2 of our friends were heading home from downtown miami on I-95. It was raining extremely hard, so everyone was going well below the speed limit. I would approx we were going 35-40 mph. The car in front of us slammed on his breaks due to the rain coming down extremely hard, and I proceeded to do the same. However instead of my car breaking, it began accelerating 10-15mph. Luckily there were no cars to my right and I was able to veer out of the way of the car in front of us, or else we would of been in a horrible car accident and possibly dead. As expected, my fiancé is extremely shooken up by what happened. I know this is a known issue with the 2010 Corolla and I have taken my car in for all the recalls and inspections but obviously there is something still wrong with the 2010 Corollas because I almost died tonight die to unexpected acceleration.

12 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2015

I was driving 99 south in south sacramento last Aug 21 2015, at around 2 pm. My lt foot was on the brake as I stopped to glance at my blind spot on my rt side so I can take hwy 50 toward lake tahoe, when I turned my head to the front, I noticed my car was moving forward on it's own, so I pressed the brakes all the way down and I lost control of the car, I felt the brake stucked to the floor and the only reason the car stopped is because I was on bumper to bumper traffic and my car hit the car infront of me. My car had only had 47000 miles on it. 2 weeks prior to that I took my car to the dealer for oil change and he said I need new front brakes on the next oil change. As a result of the accident, my car is totalled. Fortunately no one was injured! the policeman took report. I called Toyota customer service in torrance and she suggested to inspect the " black box " or edr of the car then she asked me what I want from Toyota! after the accident, I found out that there were lots of recalls on Toyota matrix up to 2012 but I never received any notice from the mail nor the dealer fix the recall whenever I take my car for oil change!.

Brakes grind and skip causing car to slide sideways.

15 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/13/2014

While driving on route 30 east in PA, I experienced a scenario where I was on cruise control and pressed the brake. The car continued to accelerate at it's speed and subsequent pressings of the brakes did not slow the car. I shifted the car into neutral and the brakes still were not slowing the car enough. I had to drive into the left shoulder and grass beyond that in order to slow the car down enough to let other cars pass so I could go into the right lane. The next business I took my car to the dealer and after driving 7 miles and looking for error codes, reported that they "could not reproduce the issue". My car already had all the fixes for the unintended acceleration issue that Toyota had a number of recalls for done in December 2013. This issue needs to be further investigated by Toyota because if the reported fixes do not work, then there could be a significant number of accidents/fatalities yet to come. I never had experienced this issue before.

16 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/20/2014

I was driving in the morning on a very cold day and was driving around 30mph. I applied the brakes as I could see the stop light about 200 feet just came on. When I applied the brakes, the abs brakes locked up and it took the entire 200 feet to finally get the car to stop.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the failure was unable to be replicated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 09v338000 (service brakes). The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

19 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/28/2013

Hi, I [xxx] the owner of Toyota Corolla 2010 (license plate: [xxx], licensed with the state of maryland VIN [xxx]), residing at [xxx], while trying to park in my residential apartments at the above mentioned address (at a speed of 3-5 mph), applied the brakes and all of a sudden it caused an unintended acceleration and I hit the huge metallic trash bins in front of me at a very high speed on October 28th, 2013. The airbags did not deploy, but the front of my car got damaged heavily. It has been towed away by my insurance company geico to one of their body shops. My left ear and neck are in great pain since then and my wife tejaswi peri who was the passenger along with me suffered left knee sprain. We have been in a state of utter shock and dismay since this incident as this was completely unexpected. I have been a safe driver since the past 7 years and have never had any accidents, violations etc. Also I never mistook the gas pedal for the brake during my whole driving career and I use only one leg for this purpose. My vehicle when I purchased in 2010 was inspected 2-3 times for this and other issues by the dealer/Toyota. The initial estimates as per my insurance agent are several grand (dollars) and the damage to the car is extensive. The insurance company's body shop is working on it. Please see the attachments that show the car was taken to the Toyota dealer within a few months of purchasing it for acceleration problems and also the edr reports, service statement showing that this model is a part of a open recall service by Toyota. I opened a case with Toyota USA headquarters about the unintended acceleration that caused the accident yesterday. The case# is [xxx]. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

21 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2013

Vehicle is impacted by takata pass bag faulty, no resolution informed by Toyota advised Toyota to refund money in regards to paying $21k, also vehicle has clatter under passenger side cv axle, have been in several times for solution or resolution to this issue more than 3 times to date there stating no problem is there, if car I jacked up I hear clear noise between cv axle and transmission, this was brought to Toyotas attn. Once at Toyota of irving twice at Toyota of dallas and was shown to me at ntb tire to have axle or transmission irregular noise clatter when put in drive while on lift up 5 ft with one tech in car and another under vehicle with me pointing out clearly there is noise on passenger side. Yet Toyota denies this or any noise to be a problem or hazard nor to acknowledge any noise exsist, also brought car in for brake growl when I step on brakes, the rear brakes have not been changed by me and are not aftermarket brakes unless Toyota installed them, the car was purchased from dealer, I took car back 4 times in regards to brake issues back to dealer no problem found.

22 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/29/2013

On Monday July 29,2013 while I was set on 70mph cruise ,my Toyota Corolla suddenly surged forward. I have no idea how fast it made the car go,but I have never been in anything going that fast. I had to take the car into the grass median to avoid hitting another car when the brakes would not stop my car. We still flew down the grass median like a speed boat hitting waves,we were bouncing, the car was bouncing,I had severe cramps and stabbing across my lower kidney area when we finally came to a stop. I had to hold the brake pedal to the floor for what seemed like eternity. Before it finally stopped. I reported the incident in great detail to Toyota corporate and my case was #1307291802. (this case # is no longer valid) I was told at that time if I felt safe I could take it to my dealer in d. M. ,iowa where I leased the car in 2010,or if I felt unsafe,I could take it to adams Toyota in lee's summit, missouri. Then,my daughter-in=law called adams on my behalf and they gave her an entirely new case number because the first rep who took the report did not understand there was damage. My new case # is 1308011967. I felt I never want to be in that Corolla again,so I did take it to adams and they provided me with a scion rental to get back to home and work in iowa. Toyota has inspected the car and has up to 30 days to give me their report. I am to receive a copy of the data imaging extracted from the black box also.

23 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2013

The problem is with braking system or brake in my Toyota Corolla 2010. I step on the brake pedal when I was driving at 25mph speed at local street, but the brake pedal just got froze couldn't push further. Then I tried to pull up the brake handle but the handle was totally loose, all light on the board went on, then I have to turn off the key to force the engine stop before I almost hit the other car front of me. After 5 mins I restart my car, it turned out normal. It's very terrible experiences. I was lucky this time, it could cause to death accident. I send the car to Toyota dealer where I bought the car originally. They checked the car and told me there is nothing wrong, also charged me to pay for the checking. This car is beyond the safe to drive, I don't know it will happened again.

24 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2013

I was on the highway going about 70mph. My exit was coming up on the right side so I put my foot on the brake to slow down. However the brake stuck and the vehicle wouldn't slow down, it kept going. I had the cruise control on, and usually if I brake without first turning it off it slows down, but that didn't happen. So I turned the cruise control off but nothing happened. My car kept going. I pushed down on the brake, but that made the car accelerate even more. I checked to make sure the pedal wasn't stuck, it wasn't, but I knew that wasn't the problem because my car was accelerating when I was hitting the brake. Luckily there was no one in front of me because I was going over 110mph. I sped at this speed for quite a ways maybe 3/4 of a mile. I thought I was going to die and had my phone in my had to call 911. I kept pushing on the brake since I didn't know what else to do (this of course made me go faster and faster). The brake wouldn't go down though. I didn't understand what was happening. It was like stuck? finally I heard my accelerate pop. And the car started to decelerate.

25 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/06/2012

The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that while driving 35 mph, she abruptly applied the brakes in order to avoid crashing into a deer and the brakes seized, causing the vehicle to slide across the road. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection and they stated that they could not diagnose the cause of failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 30,000.

26 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2012

Brakes make a rapid thumping sound and are ineffective when applied at the time the car is driving over bumps, holes, or imperfections on the road surface. The road surface has to be completely smooth for the breaks to work properly. This is cause for a potential accident.

27 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/13/2011

When braking engine speeds up, having the impression of loss of control. The condition can be replicated if my foot is resting on the extreme right edge of the brake pad and then applying the pressure to the brakes. When braking, my shoe comes in contact with the accelerator depressing it slightly, speeding up the engine. The driver's immediate reaction is to apply more pressure to the brakes, exacerbating the problem. The problem is easily solved by increasing the height difference between the brake pedal and the accelerator simply by changing the thickness of the brake pedal pad. I have tested my Toyota avalon 1998 for this condition and find that there is no similar problem with that vehicle.

28 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/12/2011

When I purchased this vehicle, I immediately felt an awkwardness with the brakes. Anytime I began to stop & the road was less than perfect, the brakes locked up & I seemed to slide to a stop. The feeling was almost like stopping on gravel or hydroplaning, just no control felt. When I complained about this, I was told that's how the new brakes are (I had previously owned an older vehicle) & the brake inspection found nothing. I have been in two mvas prior, once I was rear ended & the other time someone ran a stop sign & hit me. 10/12/11 I rear ended another vehicle & was also rear ended in the proocess. When I went to brake suddenly that day, the car slid into the vehicle in front of me. I am a very conscientious driver. I have always been told that when someone rear ends another vehicle, it is automatically their fault. I have since purchased another new vehicle, different manufacturer, and being told the Toyota brakes were right, couldn't be further from the truth. 10/10/11 I had lab work performed & was diagnosed as being pregnant. This accident two days later, the airbags didn't deploy, either. The hood of the car came in through the windshield on me, the car has been deemed a total loss. There were two faulty Toyota parts that failed me and my unborm child that day-the brakes and the airbags. I get to have surgery 10/28/11 to remove the now nonviable child from my womb. I equate this loss to the failures on Toyota's part.

29 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/12/2011

Last month, in June, I had a problem with my 2010 Toyota Corolla. I pulled out of a parking lot and was not going fast. I was approaching a steep hill and wanted to brake but I could not. In order to stop the car and avoid the hill, I crossed to the other side of the street into someone's lawn in order to give the car enough friction to stop. I ended up hitting a slope and the car stopped. . . But not from my brakes. Since I was going very slow, no one in my car was hurt. One of the passengers in my car told me to try again. I drove the car around the lot and the brakes worked. It has been almost a month and Toyota recently sent out a third party to inspect the vehicle. The car is currently sitting on my dealership's lot. They did not find anything wrong but I am absolutely sure that something is wrong because I pushed down on the brake the entire time before I hit the slope in the lawn. I am still waiting to hear an official response from Toyota, the actual company.

30 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/24/2011

The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that while driving at low speeds and attempting to decelerate, the vehicle would not stop. As a result, the contact was involved in a crash in which she rear ended another vehicle. A police report was filed, but no injuries were reported. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, where they were unable to diagnose or duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The contact also stated that after operating the air conditioner, a foul odor was emitted into the vehicle. The vehicle was again taken to an authorized dealer, where they were unable to diagnose the failure, but the air filter was replaced. The failure and current mileages were approximately 13,000. The VIN was unavailable.

31 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/06/2011

The problem is with braking system or brakes in Toyota Corolla 2010 le. I bought the car in December 2010. When the brake pedal is pushed, the vehicle does not slow down or stop. It requires pushing the brake pedal further down to slow down the car or bring it to complete stop. It happens at all speeds. Abs is available in the car and is engaged. It ran 1100 mile only. I got it checked with the dealer and they told that there is nothing wrong with the braking system and that is how the braking system was designed in new Toyota cars ( requires pushing down the brake pedal further down and I can't believe this). I still feel that there is some issue with the braking system. . Read more...

32 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2011

Purchased the car Jan. 2011, within the first 2 weeks, I had the first experience with vibration in the brake pedal when applying on uneven surface. In addition to the vibration there is a hesitation in braking. This problem has happened multiple times, mostly on uneven surfaces. Last week I had to stop suddenly for a deer and I really noticed how long it took to stop the vehicle. In addition, the noise (almost liking grinding) was very loud and the pedal vibrated. I have already taken the car back to the dealership and they assured me the brakes were fine. I have just made my second appointment. How do I ensure they fix this to proper safety standards?.

33 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2011

I have a 2010 Corolla with brake issues. Whenever I go over a pothole or other bump at low speeds (under 25mph), the car makes a grinding 'metal on metal' noise. It feels kind of like tingling under your foot. . . Similar to a pulse. The car 'jumps forward' a small bit before it slows down to a stop. I find the 'jumping' issue very unsettling. It is like the car accelerates slightly even though you are using the brakes and trying to slow. The major issue is that the car does not stop--the brake pedal feels disengaged while it grinds and pulses. I have had my car serviced and they tell me it is the abs and there is no problem. But obviously there is a problem and other people are having this issue as well. I have driven the 2005 Corolla model, as well as other cars with abs brakes, and never encountered brake issues like this. I feel very unsafe in my 2010 Corolla and honestly, may try to trade it in even though I've only had it a year and would be losing a lot of money.

34 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/31/2010

The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Corolla. The contact was driving approximately 35 mph when the brakes were applied but the vehicle did not stop until it crashed. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed. The driver suffered a serious injury. The vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop where the contact was told that the brakes were not functioning. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 5,000. The VIN was unavailable.

35 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2010

Our japanese built 2010 Corolla has a dead spot at the top of the brake pedal travel. At all speeds, when first depressing the pedal, very little if any braking action occurs with the vehicle. Only after significant pressure has been applied to the pedal will the vehicle slow. This is actually more dangerous during low speed driving. The car has been to the dealer 3 times for this. There have been several adjustments made, and the brake system has been flushed with new fluid. It is still an issue. They have acknowledged that this is a characteristic of the japanese built cars. I have test driven 2 canadian built 2010 Corollas, and the braking function is much better. The braking components are not transferable between the 2 cars. I maintain that this is a design flaw of the japanese built Corollas.
