3 Emission Control problem of the 2005 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/13/2009

I am contacting odi NHTSA about a problem with my Toyota Corolla 2005, regarding the replacement of the charcoal vapor canister. Back, in October 2007, my car's check engine light came on (this was when the mileage was around 41,200). By glen Toyota nj I came to know that the engine light was on, dew charcoal canister failure. Also I was told: because the warranty is expired after 36000 miles, the total repair around $480 was paid by me. My frustration is, that it broke after warranty, but s l I g h t l y over 36,000 miles. I think, that according to federal regulations in toughening car emission requirements, an emission control device should last longer than just two and a half years. Also I learned that USA government obligated all car manufacturers to extend warranty for exhaust system up to 80,000 miles. If you are in power, this is the right time to extend the warranty up to 80,000 for emission control system devices. Also because of a huge amount of complains, particularly for charcoal vapor canisters Toyota manufacturer should pronounce a recall. Sincerely isaac.

4 Emission Control problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/10/2009

The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Corolla which was purchased brand new. Immediately after the vehicle was purchased while driving home the dealer at speeds of less than 60 mph, there was minimal resistance in the steering wheel. He had to continue moving the steering wheel six inches back and forth and from left to right in order to keep the wheel straight while driving. The manufacturer was contacted and advised him that there were no recalls for the failure. He experienced the "loose" feeling in the steering wheel intermittently every time he drove the vehicle, especially in windy weather conditions. There were no repairs made to the vehicle. The manufacturer would not offer any assistance. The failure mileage was 50 and the current mileage was 33,500. Updated 04/13/10. The check engine light illuminated on four ocassionss. The dealer found a small leak in the evap system. Updated 10/12/10.

5 Emission Control problem of the 2005 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 04/14/2009

2005 Toyota Corolla did not pass emissions inspection. Car taken to lia Toyota, northampton, MA. Dealer said car computer needed to be replaced but had to order part from Toyota. So far it's been two weeks and the part may be delivered in another two weeks per Toyota. Over 1600 of these computers are on backorder with no delivery date supplied. I will have to pay for another emissions inspection, could e stopped by police and have my insurance increased for six years. I feel this is a known defect and Toyota is not really responding to me or other customers and because the pert (very expensive) cannot be supplied before 4/30 I am incurring additional expenses. It should not take a month to get a part. The dealership is waiting for 12 of these computers and is being shipped two and has 3 cars that don't even run.

6 Emission Control problem of the 2002 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/10/2007

I am the first owner of my Toyota Corolla, which has 74,000 mile on it now. The car has been well maintained. However, there are some unexpected problems with the car. After I bought the car three and half years (March 2005), the check engine light went on and it was diagnosed that the evaporation system had malfunction and the charcoal canister and vacuum switch needed to be replaced. I had spent more than $600. 00 to have this done. At that time I did not complain too much. However, the same thing happened again in November 2007, I had to spend another $600. 00 to replace canister and valve again (after two and half years later). I believe that the two charcoal canisters had very bad quality!.

7 Emission Control problem of the 2003 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 09/13/2007

Falure of charcoal emmision cannister in my 2003 Toyota Corolla. This is the second time in 4 years that this part has failed. It is my understanding that many other owners of this year vehicle have experienced similar problems. I believe a recall is in order.

8 Emission Control problem of the 2000 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 05/01/2007

9 Emission Control problem of the 2000 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 04/26/2007

Me 2000 Toyota Corolla has a leak in the pipe containing the cat converter and resonator. When my car was manufactured, the exhaust system contained these parts in one long piece. Being that the leak is in this pipe, near the resonator, I brought it to the dealer to be replaced under warranty. My car is well within the years and mileage for warranty replacement. The dealer says that Toyota now makes the replacement part only in 2 pieces, not in one piece as was installed in my car. They tell me that because of this, I must pay to have the pipe replaced. I feel that because Toyota made this pipe in one piece on my car, that the replacement of the piece, weather by original manufactured method or by the now two piece method, should be covered under the federal emission warranty and be repaired at no cost to me. Please respond as to weather Toyota can do this or if they are trying to get the consumer to pay for something that should be covered. Thank you.

10 Emission Control problem of the 2001 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 04/23/2007

Own Corolla 2001 with 45,000 miles, engine light on. I took it for diagnostic, it was charcoal canister. Extended warranty did not cover part & labor. Searching in the net me many same model owners with exact same problem. Toyota is definitely ignored this issue while selling the care. Aware that after 35,000 miles the part must be replaced. Labor and part everywhere over $400.

11 Emission Control problem of the 2005 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 01/23/2007

We bought a 2005 Toyota Corolla in July of 2004. We have been extremely happy with the way the car runs mechanically never having any issues. Our vehicle is currently at 40,310 and we are experiencing a failure with the charcoal canister. In order to pass emissions for the state of nc we have to replace this particular part. Since our car is no longer covered under our basic 3 year, 36,000 mile warranty we are having to replace this part on our own. This is very discouraging since our vehicle is only 4,000 miles over our basic warranty coverage. This problem has occurred with many other Toyota Corolla vehicles around the same mileage. We feel this needs to be looked into because it seems odd that the charcoal canister fails around this mile marker in numerous vehicles. This is a component of the car the contributes to keeping our air clean. Toyota is failing to provide a car that will do so.

12 Emission Control problem of the 1999 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 12/12/2006

Engine light comes on from time to time on its on due to failures of the charcoal canister/evaporative solenoids. The charcoal canister seems to be a common complaint. The car will run just fine (depending on the type of failure), but if you have emissions testing, the car will fail. Many Toyota owners seem to be having this similar trouble due to some flaw in the Toyota icu programming. If you search on the net for the similar problem, many links will show up. . Read more...

13 Emission Control problem of the 2000 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 08/17/2006

: the contact stated the check engine light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who determined the charcoal canister needed to be replaced.

14 Emission Control problem of the 2002 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 05/18/2006

I took my 2002 Toyota Corolla le in for an emissions test and failed. I was told that the repair would cost above $500 because the charcoal canister on my emissions control system had failed and I need to replace it. After researching this problem on the internet and speaking with my mechanic I found that this was a very common problem with Corollas. I was also told that the reason for the failure is that the canister is set at an angle and it allows engine gases to liquefy and cause failure. I am upset because this car has fewer that 65000 mile on it and this is a major part failure. Please look into this for me and all the other people who have had this obvious vehicle defect. Thank you.

15 Emission Control problem of the 2000 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 08/21/2005

(1) my check engine light came on unexpectedly while I was driving under 35 mph. I took the car (a Toyota Corolla ce) to the dealership where I bought it, new, in the summer of 2000. (2) the dealer stated that the charcoal canister needed to be replaced. (3) the dealer replaced the charcoal canister at a cost of $460. 20, parts and labor. I'm reporting this because I know that lots of other Corolla owners have had the same problem. The canister is part of the emissions system but is not covered under the emissions warranty. It seems as though way too many Toyota's are affected for this to be passed off as a coincidence. I called Toyota to complain but they weren't able to help.

16 Emission Control problem of the 2001 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 08/01/2005

Contacts stated the check engine light came on August 1, 2005, consumer took the vehicle to an independent mechanic, and they replaced two different oxygen sensors. Now, the light came back on again and stayed on. Took the vehicle back to the independent mechanic, they put in new spark plugs. They said it could be a lot of things. It had stayed off a few days. However, the check engine light stayed on and consumer was taking the vehicle to the independent for the fourth time. The Toyota dealer had not checked the vehicle.

17 Emission Control problem of the 2004 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 03/01/2005

Contact states that there was a report on a 2004 Toyota Corolla regarding the excessive sulfur dioxide odor. Contact took the vehicle to the service dealer three times, they replaced the converter and the air filter, this did not rid the car of the smell.

18 Emission Control problem of the 2000 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 01/20/2005

I have noticed my right rear window is not sliding down or up. When I took for 60k miles service dealer told me motor failed and it cost me $500. And it is very common in Toyota Corolla. At 66k check engine light started glowing. Dealer said I need to replace charcoal evaporator canister which is part of emission system and it is going to cost me $400. I will never buy Toyota again.

19 Emission Control problem of the 2005 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 01/14/2005

Purchased 2005 Toyota Corolla in August 2004. The car has had a consistent smell of rotten eggs (sulfur), almost daily with it worse when the car idles & after car shutoff. Dealer said try premium gas, which I did and no effect. Dealer said Toyota had no knowledge or suggestions about problem, although I am aware of a 5/28/04 service bulletin for 2003-2004 Corolla's for the exact problem. Dealer also said it could not be the catalytic converter because the dashboard light wasn't on, yet Toyota just settled a 2 million law suit for the dash lights not coming on and emission defects were not being picked up with regular code testing. Dealer mentioned a number of other persons brought their car in lately for same thing but suggested it was related to our current cold weather. When I mentioned the problem with my car has persisted since late August, a week after I bought the car, the dealer suggested the smell was from bad gas & the wind probably blew it into the car. My understanding is that this smell has been a very significant problem with Corolla's (& some other cars) and a number of 2005 owners on various discussion boards have also reported it. Sometimes, the smell is so strong that I have to put the window down & I wonder what the constant exposure to sulfus will do to my allergies and asthma and why I should continue to pollute the air with sulfur everyday while Toyota 's dealers treat me as if I am some neurotic patron.

20 Emission Control problem of the 2005 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 12/28/2004

The consumer stated the vehicle smelled of sulfur, that was sickening to the consumer. The dealer stated that the sulfur content was common in these vehicles, however, the state law differs.

21 Emission Control problem of the 1998 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 12/02/2004

Check engine light illuminated prompting me to have the problem checked. The indication was an error message po441: purge flow fault. The local Toyota dealer diagnosed a charcoal canister failure which needs to be replaced. There are significant and consistent complaints by Toyota owners regarding emissions control systems failures in the 1998 Corolla in addition to a lawsuit in which tmc settled with the epa covering only certain models. It seems that a recall should have been issued on all 1998 models as this problem is very prevalent.

22 Emission Control problem of the 1998 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/17/2004

Engine light illuminated. Had it checked out to find that the charcoal canister failed - something my mechanic told me he sees all the time in these Toyotas.

23 Emission Control problem of the 2000 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 10/20/2004

I purchased a 2000 Corolla I had to have the charcoal cannister replaced and the purge valve emission unit replaced at great expense. . . The check engine light comes on regularly and I am told it is the purge valve or the gas cap. . . I have always had Toyotas and I have spent more on this vehicle in one year of driving than any other.

24 Emission Control problem of the 2004 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 10/12/2004

Carbon monoxide is getting into the vehicle when accelerating from various speeds. The problem was reported to the dealer, and consumer will take vehicle to the dealer for inspection.

25 Emission Control problem of the 2001 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 08/31/2004

Check engine light came up on 8/31/04. Could not drive. Took it to dealer. Diagnosed as charcoal canister problem. Paid about $460 (parts and labor) to fix this problem.

26 Emission Control problem of the 2003 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 08/13/2004

While driving check engine light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. Vehicle stalled. But the driver was able to restart vehicle, and drove it to the dealer for inspection. Mechanic placed the vehicle on the diagnostic machine and the codes appeared as follows, p04400/p04411/ p04412. Then, mechanic determined that the charcoal canister and the gas vapor sensor needed to be replaced. Consumer informed the mechanic that the problem occurred many times. Also, mechanic informed consumer that this problem could be a design flaw from the manufacturer.

27 Emission Control problem of the 1999 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 08/09/2004

Evap cannister also called a charcol cannister failed at 67000miles on car. The engine check light kept comming on and now the car will not pass inspection. Dealer told her it was due to design flaw in evap cannister. Has not contacted manufacturer yet.

28 Emission Control problem of the 1999 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 07/28/2004

No accidents, all maintenance done as specified in manual. Check engine light on for several months. First time Toyota dealer said it was loose gas cap. Came back on. Next time they said it was charcoal canister (cost $736). Light returned. Now they say it is some valve and is going to cost another $700 -800 to fix.

29 Emission Control problem of the 1999 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 06/01/2004

Upon seeing the "check engine" light on I took my 1999 Toyota Corolla (50,200 miles) to a local Toyota dealership for diagnostics. The report indicated that the charcoal canister needed to be replaced. The repair costs are almost $500 with labor. This part is not under warranty past 3 years and 30000 miles. Although this is not a safety issue, it is an environmental and fuel efficiency concern and I think that the company should include it in its extended warranty. I am trying to shop around for a cheaper estimate. I have performed all the recommended maintainence schedules and am concerned that this was not addressed during routine maintainence.

30 Emission Control problem of the 2001 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 04/16/2004

We bought a new Toyota Corolla in sept 2001 and it has approx 32000 miles till now. It was always serviced at the Toyota dealer. I got my 30000 miles servicing done in sept 2003 and since then we were not using the car much. In April 2004 suddenly the dashboard was showing check engine light. I thought it was 7 months that I got serviced(although I travelled less then 2000miles during this period) and it needs simple oil change and took the car to the dealer. The dealer told me that the charcoal canister and vsv have to be replaced. Although I missed the 36 months warranty my car was still under 36000 miles. The dealer didnt consider my request for a free replacement and was asking me to pay approx. 700 $ for parts and labor. But when I called couple of other dealers they told it is very uncommon to have charcoal canister replaced so soon. When I called Toyota customer service 800-331-4331, they agreed to replace the part but still the dealer is charging me 200 $ for labor. I feel Toyota is aware of the problem with this canister and is deliberately ignoring instead of recall or free parts and labor. I found a similiar kind of issues raised by other Corolla owners on the net. Please do the necessary investigation in this matter.

31 Emission Control problem of the 2003 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 01/31/2004

I have a 2003 Toyota Corolla. In cold weather as the engine is warming up, there is a very strong rotten egg smell when vehicle is stopped. This occurs when the windows are all closed. I would like to know if there is a safety concern.

32 Emission Control problem of the 2004 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 01/20/2004

I bought a 2004 Toyota Corolla type s on December 28, 2003. I've had the car for about 2 months and have noticed an extremely horrible sulfur smell from the vehicle. I have also had the dashboard ripped apart twice, and checked for extremely loud vibrations and noise. The first time, the service department found "nothing wrong, and heard no unusual noises" and the second time, when I test drove it with the technician, they applied some foam around the wiring inside the dash. I can still hear the vibrations and noise in the dashboard whenever I am driving the vehicle.

33 Emission Control problem of the 1999 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 01/19/2004

Purchased my car used on 2002. The car never had any problems until in January 2004, the charcoal canister needed to be replaced. This was at the same time the a/c system needing to be replaced. The a/c system was covered under an extended warranty, however the emission problems were not. I have had problems with the check engine light continually going on and off since this has been replaced. I have taken it back to be checked, the mechanic tells me there is nothing wrong with my car. However, the light continues to arise. The light stayed off for approximately 2-3 months and has now started its on and off again show. The research I have begun has opened my eyes to a whole new world of charcoal canisters being replaced as fast as people change underwear. This replacement cost about $467-/ with labor. As far as I can tell this is the going rate for this job. I am upset to see so many people in the same 'canister' as I and Toyota, with whom I love their cars, are not making any adjustments nor standing up to the plate to assist their consumers. I work in a consumer protection agency and know personally how people and businesses take advantage of one another. I ask Toyota to look into this problem thoroughly.

34 Emission Control problem of the 2004 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 01/04/2004

Since I bought the car in sept 2003 it emitted a rotten egg smell through the vents. I went to arbitration in may 2004 and lost because they said that it was the design of the car. The Toyota rep said that someone wou ld be caontacting me and that they were aware of the problem. No one contacted me and the dealer would not return my calls. The 800# continued to say it was the gas. I have suffered with horrible headaches and I lost my periphial vission on three ocasions. In Feb 2005 I was pulled over sick form the odor and fi again called 800#, they again said it was the gas. I pleaded with the rep to help me and she called me back two days later with a new TSB that came out in may 2004. The dealer reprogramed the ecu and tech smelled odor so they ordered a new cat converter replaced that a reprogramed ecu again. They said it was an internal failure in my cat. If this was the case why was'nt my check engine light going off for the last year and a half? now I have an odor of bad exhaust coming through my vents and Toyota wants me to put in the same gas 4xs. I don't feel safe in this car and I can';t imagine what driving with a bad cat for over a year has done to my health and my engine. I have asked Toyota to issue me a letter saying that the car is safe since I transport children but they refused.

35 Emission Control problem of the 2003 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/28/2003

My 2003 Toyota Corolla emits an overpowering sulphur smell when I come to a stop. The smell enters the passenger cabin and lingers for 10 to 15 minutes. This is an on going problem. My car has only 13,000 miles on it.
