1 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2020 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 06/09/2020

The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Corolla. The contact was concerned that the vehicle was manufactured without a heat shield. The contact was informed by an independent mechanic that it was possible for the exhaust to get hot enough to cause a vehicle fire. The vehicle was taken to the bill page Toyota located at 2923 annandale rd, falls church, va 22042, and it was confirmed that the vehicle was no longer manufactured with a heat shield. The contact was informed that an after-market part could be purchased and installed. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was concerned that other vehicle manufacturers manufactured their vehicles with heat shields. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was filed. The approximate failure mileage was 1,500.

2 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2013 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 10/31/2015

My car was hacked almost killing me. Cyber attack 10/31/15 as I was driving the battery/alternator kept draining forcing me to pull over to side of road. A strange gas also was periodically spraying out of vent fogging windows w/white film making it difficult to see & breath. Each time I pulled over car recharged itself on grass/dirt. At least the 8th or 9th time this happened the steering wheel jerked to right & w/in 1-2 seconds I went from 45-50mph-0 like hitting invisible building in middle of road. Pushed gas pedal to floor, not enough speed to pull off road. No lights, power, engine died. My body was jarred forward abruptly. A red light started blinking & beeping at bottom of consul & gas started coming out of vent again. I struggled to get out of car for fear of being hit from behind as it was pitch black out, also wanted to get cat out car which I left in field before police & ambulance arrived. I had blood down to socks. I was in hospital 1 week and no accident report was filed, my cat is still missing. I called dealership to report mechanical/electrical defect & was avoided/resisted for 3 1/2 weeks/over 30 hours on the phone before it was suggested I call manufacturer & another 2 weeks before they cooperated & filed claim. This has been a full time job trying to get someone to take responsibility. I sell real estate & cant work/earn money with no car. 12/11/15 Toyota sent inspector to place car was towed to pull info off data recorder. 2/1/15 I still have not received report. I have 3 year one pay lease expiring 9/2016, no money & no car. This has been an absurd, brain draining exhausting waste of time w/no end in site. I've reached out to ftc, consumer protection, govenors/senators. . . I just wanted them to take responsibility, loan or give me a car while they inspect and have had zero recourse to date. They want to sue me for cost of car/impound/storage fees.

3 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2010 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 07/28/2015

My family and I bought a brand new Toyota Corolla 2010 le from lustine Toyota, woodbridge, virginia in 2010. For the past five years, since we owed the vehicle, we have did all the oil, filter changes, and the required maintenance, I. E. , tire rotations, alignment, and the different miles inspection on time and never missed a single maintenance or check-ups. We can provide proper documentations, if needed. When the car reached the 34,000 miles, the engine light came on and the vehicle started to shake. We took the vehicle to the lustine Toyota dealership and they fix the vehicle. The dealership informed us that it was a part of a recall issue, and no fees would be required from our side. However, we have recently faced the same issue this past week, and the car has now reached more that 89,000 miles. Once again, we had the vehicle serviced by lustine Toyota, who then informed us the vehicle needs a new engine, which is about a $8,000. 00 expense. I recently filed a compliant with the Toyota cooperation, who refused to acknowledge fault and wants to provide me with $2,000. 00 to replace family's car. My family and I were not expecting this exhaustive expense and a $2,000. 00 credit is not enough to purchase another vehicle. This is a very frustrating experience for myself and my family. I have children under the age of 5, which are also traumatized and afraid of the car's condition to operate safely (my children were in the vehicle at the time the vehicle shook vigorously). I would greatly appreciate the cooperation from the national highway traffic safety administration (NHTSA) investigating this matter further and explain why my vehicle is experiencing so many issues and problems. I am appalled by Toyota's cooperation and I would never recommend anyone to purchase or consider leasing vehicles from Toyota. Horrible customer and service experience.

4 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 07/01/2011

I own a 2000 Toyota Corolla with a 1. 8l engine that is full of sludge and now visibly burns 1 quart of oil every 200-300 miles and will not pass inspection due to the oil being burned in the exhaust. I have had to replace several catalytic converters due to becoming clogged from the amount of oil burning through the engine. This problem has existed since the car had about 55,000 miles on it and local Toyota garage has either denied there being a problem or they have tried to sell me on numerous other expensive repairs such as front and rear main bearings and seals, allegedly warped head, etc. Vehicle now has close to 100k miles. The vehicle will not now pass state emissions inspection and is essentially worthless. There are thousands of like reports in researching but never seems to have been addressed. Other models and years have been included in a class action suits that was successful for the exact same issue, but I can't find that this vehicle has been successfully addressed.

5 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2007 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 09/06/2010

The engine would sound like a go kart. It was the exhaust manifold that was loose at the engine. The leaking exhaust would surely be mixing in with the inside air and would heat up the hood and surrounding areas. Bolts needed to be tightened.

6 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2008 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 08/10/2010

The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that the rear heat shield mount between the exhaust and the fuel tank was rusted due to failed metal. The dealer advised that the manufacturer was in the process of redesigning the defective shield therefore, as a temporary repair, the dealer wired the defective shield until the newly designed part became available. The contact stated that the part was still not available after one month. The failure mileage was 33,000 and the current mileage was 33, 600.

7 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2006 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 02/04/2010

My 2006 Toyota Corolla experienced a failure with the ecm that caused the check engine light to come on and report a p2716 error code. The problem caused the transmission to lock up spontaneously and shift very hard. My independent mechanic who read the code had an advanced odc scanner that indicated the car was idling when the problem suddenly happened. The Toyota dealership personnel informed me that several cars had been coming in with this report, but the company was only addressing the issue for customers who were still under warranty. Several customers who discussed this problem on the internet reported that their car would suddenly stall while on the road, and it seems that Toyota should be issuing yet another recall, but isn't. Please investigate this matter and hold the Toyota corporation responsible for its defect.

8 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 09/15/2009

The check engine light came on, the diagnostic said it was the O2 sensor which was replaced. The light went out and came back on again the next day. A mechanic checked it and said it was the catalytic converter. I read where catalytic converters don't go bad by themselves, therefore the problem has to stem from a manufactures defect and we should not have to pay for continual repairs.

9 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 08/14/2009

I purchased a used 2003 Corolla. Vehicle came with all service records and it had been well maintained. I also checked all fluids. Mileage was 133,065 at the time I purchased it. I thought this was good because Toyotas are suppose to last forever, right? a week after I bought it I noticed a knocking in the engine. I checked the oil and it was out. I have to put 3-4 quarts of oil in my car every 7-8 days. It does not leak, it burns it. The engine needs to be replaced. The emissions light stays on and I have also lost a hubcap cover. I've noticed that every other 03 Corolla I pass on road is also missing at least one. After reading the complaints on here, I am very concerned and know I will never by Toyota again.

10 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2002 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 07/22/2009

I would like to document my concern regarding the failure of the charcoal canister in my 2002 Toyota Corolla. This seems to be a common problem and I have seen quite a few people complain about the same on the internet. Regardless, I feel that a part so non descriptive shouldn't cost over $500 to replace. Secondly Toyota motor company insist that the part would be covered for a recurring failure only if it is replaced at the dealer, where the costs are 2/3rds more than a normal service shop such as midas. Toyota should not advertise on reliability if parts fail at 50000 mark and that to becomes so expensive to replace (including labor). I see this is a wide spread problem and I would appreciate if there a recall is initiated on this part and replacements done by the manufacturer.

11 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 04/01/2009

2003- Toyota Corolla - check engine light came on about 2 years ago and was reset, just recently came on in April 2009 and not the catalytic converter needs to be replaced. Currently has 119,000 miles on it and needs to have the catalytic converter replaced.

12 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 03/30/2009

Ever since I purchased my 2009 Toyota Corolla I have noticed steering difficult. I read blogs at the time and it seemed from what I read, that this was just a draw back of the car, so I let it go. I feel I need to report it now. The steering feels way to responsive to even the slightest hand movement of the wheel, or bump in the road. Because the suspension on this model is so stiff, a bump in the road can cause my hand to move a tiny bit, resulting in the car moving much more than one would expect from little movement. The best way to sum up the problem is this; it is near impossible to just go straight, or hold the wheel still for a second. You have to constantly move slightly to the right or the left just to keep in the middle of your lane. Going around curves smoothly is difficult as well. If it is windy this problem is 10 fold, and down right dangerous. I have already skidded off a snowy highway because the car so easily fish tailed while trying to correct my steering. Luckily there was no damage, had there been vehicle in the lane next to mine, there would have been a horrific crash. In my 17 years of driving I have never fish tailed before. The alignment and tires have been checked and are fine. I had the brake recall done before the above mentioned incident. There doesn't feel to be an alignment issue. The car does not pull. The steering just seems far too sensitive, this combined with it's odd aerodynamic response, and bumpy ride make the steering feel very unsafe at times. Even when it doesn't feel dangerous, it is tiring to have to constantly adjust the wheel right and left just to keep it in lane. I've never had a steering issue like this with any other car. There is also the overwhelming smell of sulfur in the passenger cabin several times a week, seems the catalytic converter doesn't handle it well. Took it to a dealer for the sulfur issue and they said that's normal. Makes me light headed at times, on top of just stinking up my new car.

13 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1999 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 09/03/2008

My car is 9 yrs old, 109,000 miles it's on the lower end of the recommendation mileage for the year of the car. On 9/3/08 first day the check engine light ever came on. I got nervous went to advanced auto parts and they checked the light, it showed something was wrong with the air flow. Check engine light went out after 3 days. Brought it to Toyota for repairs of some other items and mentioned the check engine light going on and then off. They checked it but wasn't sure if it was reading correctly. 4 days later came back on again and went out 3 days later. 2 days passed and then it came back on again and remained on ever since. I brought it back and they told me it was a charcoal canister failure and it would cost $450, I was upset because I just got $968 worth of repairs and maintenance done. I always keep up on my maintenance work/oil changes. Is this a faulty part from Toyota? I've never heard of this going and if it is normal after so many years/miles then why is it so expensive and hard to find or repair? I heard only Toyota has the part which was quoted to me as $232. So if I don't pay $450 my vehicle won't pass inspection/emission test. Can someone help!.

14 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 05/05/2008

I purchased a 2009 Toyota Corolla in March 2008. Since the purchase I've had an issue of a rotten egg sulfur odor emitting from the emissions exhaust system and into the car cabin. The problem has known to occur while accelerating the gas pedal and coming to an idle or stop. It occurs during town driving, inclines, highways speeds, and upon starting vehicle. I have returned the car to the dealer 4 times for this issue. The dealer from whom I purchased the vehicle stated they couldn't find or duplicate the issue. Toyota tech performed evaluation of components related to fuel trim and possible related performance. The dealer stated they found no bulletins or related issue with the Toyota tech data system. I was also informed to try another brand of gas. . I took the car to a second dealer after discovering engine consumed 3 quarts of oil. They performed a tsb0145-08 2zrfe engine oil consumption reflash concerning the ecm. I was informed that this may resolve the sulfur rotten egg odor or that the catalytic converter needed a break-in period. During the winter of 2010 the rotten egg odor had become worse. To be more specific the vehicle cabin area filled with an intense rotten egg odor after restarting the car upon driving up an incline. I took the car in for service with the same complaint and they performed a repeated technical service bulletin for excessive oil consumption. They stated exhaust system seemed ok. . Toyota recommended a different grade of gas. I was informed by the service advisor that gasoline contains more sulphites in the winter and may be the cause. . Since purchasing this car I was diagnosed with a lymphoma cancer a year later to be exact. This has been an on going issue. I've tried several brand gasolines and grades as they recommended. I've been in remission from the cancer for a year now and no longer driving the car for the fear that the car is a hazard to my health. Also, I have prior lung condition called copd.

15 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 02/25/2008

I bought my 2003 Toyota Corolla from a Toyota dealership, took it home, and it began stinking like rotten eggs. I called the service department and they told me to buy more expensive gas that contains less sulfur. Four years of buying expensive gasoline, and I find out my catalytic converter has burned up and I need a new one for $1200. I found out that catalytic converters can be damaged if fuel is being mixed to richly, evident by a sulfur smell. . Read more...

16 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 04/26/2007

I have a 2003 Toyota Corolla and I took it to the dealership for its 105,000 mile service. Part of the service was to replace the oil. I left the dealership after the service and the car was ok. I drove it for about 45 minutes. It sat for about 3 hours and when I left I drove it for about 30 minutes and then there was a loud clanking and banging from the engine. I had it towed to the dealership and they say I need a new engine. There has been no oil leak or black smoke from the exhaust. I had an oil leak around 96,000 miles that I took to the dealership and they fixed. Although I had to take it back because they did not fix it properly the first time. I feel there has been some error on their part and they are not willing to get into the engine and see if there is something wrong and just want me to replace the engine no questions asked.

17 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 03/05/2007

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6) purchased 2003, Toyota, Corolla, VIN: [xxx] with daughter. Veh was purchased from Toyota of orange in CA. Two days later a hit and run driver forced veh to skid across five lanes on interstate 10 in ontario, CA, and landed atop center divider. The vehicle was sent to repair shop and "repaired" after approximately 5-8 months. However, the car was never properly repaired, and I complained to both Toyota , and to the insurance company, allstate, but Toyota adamantly stated the veh was without problems. The car was continually in the shop for the brakes. Eventually the carpet caused the accelerator to become stuck and the car went out of control. I was forced to reach down while the car moving and pull the carpet with both hands to release the accelerator. Stepping on the brakes did not help. Neither Toyota repair nor allstate would help resolve our complaints since 2003, we were simply told that the veh was fine. Additionally I believe the frame is bent, lack of interlocking brakes causing skids, brakes are soft and drop to floor, and poor steering column. This car is dangerous and is impossible to drive without involving near miss accident episodes. The car skids if going as little as 5-10 miles per hour. I offered to give the car away to anyone who was willing to investigate my complaints, all to no avail. I just recently learned that one of the problems I heard in the brand new car was a hole in the exhaust system. Toyota continually denied this for 5-6 years, then by accident a very young newly employed staff at Toyota of orange, informed us that our complaint about loud air sounding noise was a hole in the exhaust, which had been continually making the noise, and burning of eyes (migraines). The brakes were repaired every 2-4 months or less until I just reported less frequently. The car is now no longer under warranty. Currently it needs some brakes, rotors, drums, calipers, and shocks as always.

18 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 01/20/2007

Year 2004: engine light came on. $1,500 for repair. Year 2007: engine stopped. Power steering pump make noise. $2,000 for replacement of the both parts.

19 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 09/15/2006

At 70,000 miles on my 2000 Toyota Corolla the check engine light comes on, when reviewing the current problems with my certified mechanic, I mentioned that I was using a quart of oil about every 600 miles. He said that it would cost between $3,000-6,000 to fix the problem. In under 2,000 more miles it became add a quart of oil each tank. At 84,000 miles the head went out on this motor, three different mechanics from different shops couldn't believe a Toyota motor would need a new head at this distance. I replaced the head. The knocking sound disappeared for a while, the oil consumption went down for a while. Again with the check engine light. And back to a quart per tank. After a while the car started to shut off by its self. No steering, scared the heck out of me. I live in a region with embankments which reach over 200' with trees. I had to stop driving the car because it was no longer safe to drive. I cannot believe that the Corolla motors have such a bad reputation. The Toyota truck I owned ran like a champ at 200,000 when I sold it, it still runs today. While the Corolla needs a new motor. There must be a design flaw to create so many similar oil problems.

20 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/01/2005

Consumer complaint regarding fumes entering through the air vents. *** no answer required*** updated 11/7/2005 - the consumer has had this problem since the vehicle was purchased new. The manufacturer instructed the consumer to take the vehicle to the dealer. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times but they refused to fix the vehicle stating that fumes entering the vehicle was normal.

21 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 05/10/2005

I purchase my Toyota pre-owned with 46,000 miles on it odometer. A short while after the purchase the engine light came on. I called the car dealership to find out why the engine light was on. The agent stated that my gas cap may not be tight enough. I tightened my gas cap and the light when off for about 20 minutes. It never caused any problems in the performance of the car. However, when I went to get it smogged for the first time, it would not pass smog. The mechanic at the Toyota dealership stated that it needed a catalytic converter and that it would cost around $1,800 to replace. Therefore, I had to go the referee to get a 2 year waiver on my smog. I am a single mom with 2 special needs kids, I cannot go without a car. My car will be going on the next year soon. I would like to know if there is any funding to help with repairs when the problem is due to manufacturing defects. I know that this is a factory issue because I have read many complaints from other Toyota customers who have had the same exact problem with the same model year car.

22 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1999 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 04/09/2005

Corrosion caused the failure of the driver's side bolt holding the muffler strap on both my 1998 and 1999 Toyota Corolla in April 2004 and April 2005 respectively. Fortunately I was at low speed in 2004 so the damage wasn't great and in 2005 my wire fail safe prevented an exhaust drop. Stainless steel is required for this fastener or more muffler holding devices.

25 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2004 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/01/2004

The catalytic converter on the 2004 Toyota Corolla started emitting a sulfur dioxide odor. The catalytic converter was replaced but the smell persisted. The vent flap in the trunk was also replaced but that didn't help either. The consumer stated a second smell was present which smelled like ash or smoke. The dealer said there was nothing they could do about the second smell and they also recommended the consumer changed gas because there was high sulfur in the gas.

26 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2004 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 09/29/2004

Foul egg/sulfur smell while car is operating. Smell is noticeable in the interior and exterior of car. At times, this smell is so strong that I begin to feel ill. Returned to dealer. Dealer instructed me to try different gasolines. This did not work. Returned to dealer. Repeatedly spoke with service manager, etc. The suggestion to change gasoline was all the dealer could offer. This has not worked and I'm concerned that the sulfur smell may be causing a health problem.

27 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2004 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 01/12/2004

2004 Toyota Corolla, close to 3,500 miles. Purchased in July '03. When I run the heat inside the car, a very strong sulfur odor is emitted through the vents. Was told it was the gas, not the car, by both dealer and Toyota customer service. I do not get this smell in any other car I ride in, including the '96 Corolla I traded in. This release of sulfur oxide into the car interior is a serious health concern that Toyota seems to refuse to take an interest in.

34 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2004 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 10/13/2003

I purchased a Corolla ce in oct 2003. I had not had the car more than a month when I started to smell a sulfer(rotten egg) smell. I cotinued to smell this and it did not go away so I took it to the dealer. The dealer showed me a buliten that stated it was not the converter. The dealer then told me that american gas has too much sulfer content and the Toyota addmissions were at a higher level then the american gas. I now have 15,000 miles on my car and the smell is still there. I went to trade it in today to get a Corolla s model. The deal is not made yet, because I have read that the 2005 Corollas have the same problems.

35 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2004 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 10/01/2003

I bought the 2004 Toyota Corolla brand new, after purchasing the car I noticed a horrible "rotten" egg smell in the vehicle. I took it back to the dealer, to be told that I needed to try another gas station, I did and that did not fix the problem. I still continue to smell it and its bad. I was told that means the "exhaust" system is working properly. . . . I think that is a poor reason for this horrible smell. The car also has a very loud rattling noise that comes from the front drivers side wheel. I've taken it to the dealer several times and nothing has been done to fix the problem. The car also pulls to the left. . Even after several alignments. I'm really disappointed because this was my first new car purchase. I purchased a Toyota because of it's history of having very reliable cars. I'm sorry that I got this car.
