5 Fuel Pump problem of the 2010 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 06/29/2011

2010 Toyota Corolla first experienced problems June 2010 (car purchased March 2010) on a warm day I. E. 90 degrees the engine shut down, coasts to a stop. Still able to steer to get off the road. Wait 10 to 15 minutes and car will restart. The first time this occurred my son was driving the vehicle, totally shocked him. The next time I was driving on an interstate through a congested mountain pass, was fortunate that no semi trucks were directly behind me and that there was a shoulder on this stretch. Took into dealer after same experience on 2 trips. They were unable to determine a problem. June 2011 drove 200 miles on the road, then drove in town same day with multiple stops. Driving at approx. 35 mph, car jerked, stepped on gas with no response. Able to coast to a stop at a red light. With traffic backing up behind us and car would not restart, driver behind us and my octogenarian father pushed the car around the corner to a church parking lot. Called triple aaa for a tow, after waiting a half hour tried to start car. It started. Called triple aaa to cancel tow. During the next 1 to 2 miles the engine shut down 3 more times and each time was able to coast out of the roadway. Finally had vehicle towed to local Toyota dealer. They examined vehicle next morning and I was told that there is a problem with the fuel pump on 2010 and 2011 Toyota Corollas in heat and at altitude. Engineers are working on a new fuel pump. Toyota does not know when a new pump will be available. I no longer feel safe driving the vehicle as you do not know when the engine will shut down. Was told by the dealer the vehicle is safe to drive. Just put on flashers and coast to side of the road. Of course there may not be a place to pull over and what happens if you are in heavy traffic on the freeway with many vehicles going 70 mph. Toyota knows there is a problem and they are telling customers to continue driving the vehicle. This doesn't make sense.

7 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/28/2010

Traveling south on I-95, speed 71 mph, engine stops. I carefully and promptly pull over to right shoulder, call aaa and have vehicle towed to local firestone repair facility. After performing diagnostic firestone informs me the fuel pump has failed and replaces the fuel pump. I request and receive the original fuel pump. Previously I have owned 3 Corollas and have driven each of them over 150,000 miles with no fuel pump failures. I am reporting this incident because I feel that this fuel pump might have been faulty and could be very dangerous under certain circumstances.

8 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 10/21/2010

Bought a new Corolla in 2005. Fuel pump failed after only 39000 miles. Caused the car to abruptly stop running. Fortunately my daughter was in a parking lot. This could have been a serious safety problem if it had happened out on the road. After replacing her keys and engine control module to no avail Toyota finally figured out it was the fuel pump charged her $1067 to replace it. There is no way these fuel pumps should be failing this prematurely.

9 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 10/08/2010

I was driving my 2005 Toyota Corolla and it stopped running in the middle of rush hour traffic. I was almost rear ended because of this sudden stall of my vehicle. It turns out that the problem was the fuel pump. The fuel pump is being replaced as I write this complaint. The dealer told me that Toyota no longer makes the original pump for the car that cost about $300 because they've been having to service many cars with that particular fuel pump problem. As a result of this problem I have to end up paying about $920 for a new model fuel pump. I can't believe that I the consumer has to pay for Toyota's mistake of not producing a reliable product. What if this would have happened on the freeway while driving 65 mph and the car just stalled on me. I believe that the fuel pump for this vehicle should be recalled because I'm sure this is not the first or last time that this will happen. Toyota should pay the difference for this mistake.

10 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 07/28/2010

2005 Toyota Corolla le model stalled and would not re-start after driving approximately 10 miles. Fortunately it happened pulling up to the house, and not on the street or freeway. Subsequent investigation by the owner diagnosed the problem as a defective fuel pump. No aftermarket fuel pumps were available, and since Toyota wanted $1039 for a new unit ( ie. , the whole in-tank module), an auto dismantler who specialized in late-model Toyotas was found and the part was obtained for about $100. After installation, the car has performed flawlessly for a month.

11 Fuel Pump problem of the 2007 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 06/09/2010

I was driving down the road, in my 2007 Toyota Corolla, when suddenly many of my indicator lights went on and the engine went dead, I also lost my power steering and my capability of braking/stopping. Thankfully I was only going about 20 miles per hour and my car came to a stop on its own, on a non-busy road. I was then able to turn the engine back on and drive 10 minutes back home. This was the first time this had happened in the three years of owning my car. Once home I called my service garage to make an appointment. I then went to start my car to drive it there and it would not turn over to start. After having it towed it was diagnosed that the fuel pump needed to be replaced.

12 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 04/20/2010

13 Fuel Pump problem of the 2006 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 03/16/2010

I have a 2006 toyoto Corolla ,engine eg053-06. I have had trouble with it being a slow crank or no start condition, as listed on the TSB update homepage. I was not aware of this, and purchased a new batthery, tested the starter,it was fine, alternator was fine. Took it to my mechanic who saw the problem and pulled up the TSB website and it is on there own site. The title of the notice is 1zz-fe engine "no start" or extended crank" condition. It affects Corollas and matrixes. Surprise here. Anyway, it states the fuel pump assembly manufacturing process has been improved to correct this condition. The warranty ran out at 60,000 miles. I have 66,000. I think consumers should have been made aware of this since they know it was a known problem or it would have not been on their site. Now they want 1200. 00 to fix this. Obviously the fuel pump assembly was defective to start with or they would not have to corrected it. It is also ironic that the other investigaton you are doing is on the same years and models, Corolla and matrix. Have you had other complaints on this issue?.

14 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 08/16/2009

Defective fuel pump problem: I own a 2005 Toyota Corolla. One day in August 2009, I parked my car on the street for a few hours and by the time I got back to my car to start the engine, the car wasn't able to start. I had to call the tow truck company to tow my car to an auto repair shop. According to the diagnose from the auto shop, my car failed to start due to defective fuel pump problem and they have to replace the fuel pump assembly.

15 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 06/02/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Corolla. The vehicle shut off while driving at an unknown speed. The contact was informed that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was towed to a repair shop and the fuel pump was replaced at the cost of $900. The dealer was the only place that had the part available. The failure mileage was 30,063.

16 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 05/15/2009

I was driving back to home after work. The car feels like choked and stopped. I managed to stopped on the side. Car can not be started again. Starter is fine, just can not start the engine. Have it towed to shop and the mechanic told me the fuel pump was dead. Since the car was assembled in japan, the fuel pump is $900 on parts, and labor is extra. I had the car for 4 and half years, less than 50k miles. That is a pump inside the gas tank, which suppose to last at least 10 or 15 years. Lucky there was no car behind me when this happened, otherwise I would be hit from behind.

17 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 10/17/2008

I have a 2005 Corolla that stalled out on me while I was driving 65 miles an hour. I have always had trouble starting the car, even the day I drove it off the lot brand new. Toyota stated that they didn't see anything wrong with the vehicle when I brought it in a week after purchasing the car. So after it stalled I had the car towed to a local Toyota dealer ship, where I was told that the fuel pump went bad. I was upset that my 4yr old car needed a new fuel pump. I was told that the cost to replace the pump was $1500. I later found out that Toyota put out a technical service bulletin about the faulty pump, and they had to change the design. So Toyota is aware of this design flaw. I had the car towed to a garage, where they put in a used fuel system from a junked car. The cost was about $500, so I hope that this pump will last a few years.

18 Fuel Pump problem of the 2007 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 06/13/2008

While driving on the highway, the rpms dropped and there was a total loss of power. I had to coast to the side of the highway, the engine light came on. The car had approx. 19,500 miles on it. I had the car towed to the dealer and they replaced the computer module and the fuel pump. Four days later the car died again while driving and I had to have it towed a second time and the dealer replaced the fuel pump and gasket. The car has 26,000 miles on it now and has not repeated this incident. Needless to say, my perception of quality is negative.

19 Fuel Pump problem of the 2006 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 06/03/2008

After only 45,000 miles on my 2006 Toyota Corolla my fuel pump had to be replaced. This is the first time for me to have a car fuel pump replaced so early in its life.

20 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 04/23/2008

Car stalled on interstate - tried to get as far to right side as possible. Called and waited for a tow truck, which took me to a local auto repair shop. Auto repair shop informed me that I needed a fuel pump replacement, which is strange, since my 2005 Toyota Corolla is just barely 3 and 1/2 years old. Come to find out, when they went to order the part, they said it would cost 3 times the normal amount for a Toyota Corolla fuel pump because mine happen to be made in a batch during a 3 month period in which they no longer made that same sort of fuel pump. I have always kept up with my maintenance checks, so this fuel pump replacement seems like it was bound to happen no matter how well I took care of my car. It's only 3 1/2 years since I acquired this Corolla, and I'm already replacing an item that cost me over $1,500. 00, which is a damage I had no control over. I'm afraid that this particular fuel pump is going to break at some point again, since it seems to be a part that Toyota no longer continued manufacturing. . .

21 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 08/08/2006

At 53,000 miles, fuel pump went out at an absurd price of $771. 00 after being stuck on the road I had to call a tow.

22 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 03/28/2005

(1) I bought a brand new 2005 Toyota Corolla. While driving away from the dealership I noticed an odd "humming" noise coming from the vehicle. I immediately took the vehicle back to the dealership where the service personnel informed me that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The part was not in stock, so they ordered it immediately. (2) while driving down the highway the day before the service appointment the car stalled out on me! after I pulled over to the side of the road, the vehicle would not start! I had to have the vehicle towed back to the dealership. (3) the fuel pump was replaced.

23 Fuel Pump problem of the 2002 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 01/09/2002

Purchased car on 9-4-2001, no smell at all. Fuel pump goes bad and is replaced after 20 days owning car at 300 miles. After pump replacement I noticed very bad rotten egg smell. Took it to dealer for diagnostics and said nothing wrong with car, but it could be the fuel. It was advised to use 5 different fuels. Fill tank 3 times using each fuel until the car burns the gas that does not smell. They all smell and people as myself are getting sick riding in the car. The small happens at least twice a day with no set time. Some orders are light in smell then a strong smell that will force you out of the car. I have asked many owners of the same type of car who get gas at the same station I do if there car smells and everyone said no. I have contacted the dealer and a district tech from new york, and they have told me that they will not look at the car anymore and we have to go to arbitration. There phone no. Is 310- 618 4000. Something does not add up. Only one visit, the car still stinks, I feel sick driving it , no second visit to dealer, field tech brushing me off , and go to arbitration after one dealer visit. I want this investigated by your department , and I think it also my be time for law enforcement also .
