Toyota Corolla owners have reported 5 problems related to tail light switch (under the exterior lighting category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota Corolla based on all problems reported for the Corolla.
The automatic high/low beam headlight system intermittently stops working. With the switch in correct position, everything is working as expected, then the auto indicator on dash goes off and the lights stay on low beams, even though there is no oncoming traffic or tail lights ahead. This may only be for about a minute to several minutes. With the auto indicator off, I am stuck on low beams. When the auto indicator comes back on, the system functions normally. During the time the auto indicator is off, I cannot get high beams unless I turn the headlight switch from auto to on. This is dangerous because I have to manually change the switch setting and the lights go off while the switch is moved. This has happened several times with the last time being 11/5/2018.

Rear end collision hazard due to defective, poorly designed, automatic headlight systems. Almost got rear ended twice due to lack of tail lights, while in motion, driving! Toyota claims the 2014 Corolla has auto headlights. While the switch is kept in "drl" daytime running light mode the car tricks you at night into thinking the auto headlight, side markers and taillights are on after starting the car, when they are not on. You start the car and the headlights, and dash gage lights come on but nothing else is lit. No tailights, no side lights. I am told by the dealer canadian versions of the Corolla have true auto headlights and my car would have to be programmed to work as an auto system, after adding the dash sensor. I am requesting Toyota do this to correct this safety hazard to avoid a rear end collision on this car. All of my cars the last 20 yrs had auto headlights and worked flawlessly except this Toyota Corolla. I even put a note on the dash to remind me to manually turn the light switch on, but it is not seen in the dark when starting the car. I do not know what else to do other than appeal to the NHTSA for a complete review of this major manufacturer flaw.

2016 Toyota Corolla defect. The daytime running lights on/off switch is on the same control as the headlights. The dlrs turns on before reaching the low beam setting as you twist the control. The dlrs are almost as bright as the low beam headlights and utilize the same bulb at a lower wattage. They can be mistaken for your headlights at night and you will be driving around with no taillights because the taillights are not on when the switch is on the dlr setting. I got pulled over by a cop because I had no tail lights one night. The dealer has no solution for this problem. It is only a matter of time until this incompetent design kills someone. Toyota should fire the engineer behind this and order a recall and at the very least rewire the dlr switch to include taillights and boost the wattage on the dlr to low beam power. It amazes me that this defect would pass thru a company like Toyota and make it to the market. This was a mistake on my part and I was already aware of it and had already brought every driver in my house out to the driveway to show them this dangerous condition. If a conscientious person like me can make this mistake, anyone can.

I presently own a 2006 Toyota Corolla and a 2008 Subaru outback . I noticed that on both vehicles when I start the engines the dash light come on which is fine but if one gets out and walks around the vehicle one sees the front driving lights are on but there are no lights on the rear of the vehicle. I mention this because I live in north of seattle and the weather is inclement many days of the year. I have noticed that when I am driving on I-5 and it is raining , many times I cannot see the vehicle ahead of mine do to the rain mist and mostly because of the fact that there are no lights on the rear of their vehicle. Is a newer vehicle in front of mine . As I pass them I can see that the front running light are on but no lights are on in the rear of the vehicle. This is a very serious safety hazard which needs to be corrected as soon as possible . It could be corrected through recalls but should be changed at the factory during the design process. I have talked this over with many of my friends and they all agree that I am right in my assessment. Most of the driver that I report this to do are not aware of the fact that their tail lights are not on when the vehicle is started. The tail lights only come on when they are manually turned on with the dash switch on the stalk. I am not sure of when this design flaw was created or with what year vehicle but I would suspect that it is occurring on 90% of the newer vehicle on the road. Some lives could certainly be saved by having the tail light come on when the vehicle is started just as the driving lights are activated when vehicle is started. Could also be remedied by not having the driving lights or the dash lights come on until they are manually activated by the driver. Thank you.

1996 Toyota Corolla - when lights are on and you step on the brakes, the right tail light goes out. It is dangerous as when driving at night, it appears to the driver behind you that you are signaling for a right turn. I have replaced the bulbs and it will appear ok, then begin malfunctioning again. There must be an electrical connection problem in the tail light assembly. I have seen other Corollas on the road that have the same problem. It is a safety issue that could cause accidents.
