Highlander has same issue as the 2019-2020 Toyota rav4 fuel issue identified by the NHTSA: vehicle fuel gauges displaying less than full and/or total fuel dispensed is less than expected, when the fuel nozzle automatically clicks off. Noted the distance to empty shown on the multi-information display is less than expected. While driving, vehicle abruptly comes close to shutting off because gauges are inaccurate. Vehicle cannot be driven to the full capacity of the stated range. Gas tank is 17. 1 gallons but vehicle cannot take more than 12-13 gallons from empty.

I bought my 2021 Toyota Highlander xle awd from Toyota of dallas on 4/11/21. I have had nothing but trouble from the fuel guage / distance to empty system. From showing full when the tank is not full to refusing to change from full even after driving over 100 miles, I have become very disturbed by this vehicle. I am unable to get Toyota and the dealership to respond to me after several attempts. My car is currently sitting in the garage showing a full tank after driving 169 miles after refuelling! what in the world is going on? someone please kindly help. Josh. 4695783279.
Toyota manual spec and website advertise the tank capacity is 17. 1 gallons. However, I can only fill top off around 12. 5-13 gallons which misleads to customers. The problem is that I don't know whether the gauge is incorrect (showing full too early) or the tank is out of shape which I can't fill to 17. 1 gallons. This can cause unwanted situation where people think they can go couple extra hundred miles before it goes empty or people continue forcing to pump more gas after 12. 5 gallons due to 17. 1 gallons capacity. The Toyota app also gives the range around 420 miles which is an estimate for mpg of tank capacity around 12 gallons. It is hard to know whether my car got issue or company faulty advertises the tank capacity (long range per fill) to attract customers. I would love to know what's going on so I can use it properly.
Gas tank only holds 12. 5 - 13 gallons with a range of 425-450 at most whereas Toyota claims in their advertising and specs that the tank hold 17. 1 gallons and the car has a range of 598 miles. I confirmed with Toyota that this is off specification and they said the tank will only take 14 gallons and the range will decide itself. I use the car for long trips, bought it for the tank size and range and am concerned I am going to run out.
The 2021 Highlander hybrid is not taking more than 10-11gallons per fill up and the distance to empty indicator only states approx. 420miles not the 590-615miles based on the stated 34/35 mpg per Toyota on the hybrid model. We have filled the vehicle several times and at multiple gas stations and each time the tank will not accept more than 10-11gallons.
Can not fill in a full tank of gas. At most the car takes 13 gallons, where as the tank capacity is 17, which is 4 gallons shorter and gives 140 miles shorter range (calc according to epa rating). 140 miles is a huge difference. Even if you fill more than 13 gallons, the range stays at 423 miles and doesn`t increase.
The vehicle is sold as having a 17 gallon fuel tank. I've driven the vehicle for 5000 plus miles now. I have never been able to get more than 13 gallons of fuel into the tank. I have waited until the gage said there was only 12 mile until empty. Still could only fill up with on 13 gallons of fuel. The gage say's it's full. I have made the Toyota dealership aware of the issue. But they said there was nothing on their system about a recall or needed repair. If the vehicle is advertised as having a 17 gallon tank I should be able to use that whale 17 gallons of fuel. Instead I can only fill up to 13 gallons.

Each time I fill up the car with gas I am unable to fill the tank to its listed capacity. The vehicle has a 17 gallon tank, but when the vehicle is near empty (1-2 gallons remaining) I can pump in only 12-13 gallons of gas. This greatly impacts the range of the vehicle. The date shown below is my most recent fill-up, but it has happened each time I fill up. I have reported this to my Toyota dealer.
Unable to completely fill fuel tank. When fuel light comes on and I go to fill it, I get no more than 13 gallons in my tank. The fuel gauge only reads 3/4 full. Never completely full.
The dte indicator on the vehicle is operating incorrectly. I filled the Highlander up with 10 miles dte and it only took 13. 2 gallons of fuel. The dte indicator was 425 miles after fill up. Toyota advertises 600 miles per tank. My Highlander is 175 miles off of the manufactures advertised expectation. I don't know if I am out of fuel at 0 dte or if I can drive another 175 miles before empty. I averaged 35. 6 mpg on this fill up but every time I fill the tank I get similar results.
When re-fueling the vehicle with dte of less than 30 miles, the fuel shuts off around 12 gal. 2nd click for fuel stoppage may yield another 0. 5 gal. Nothing adds up to 17. 1 gal of fuel in the tank. Going beyond the 1st click is bad for the system, yet only fills the car up to 7/8 full on the fuel gauge.
I purchased a 2020 Toyota Highlander hybrid awd in may 2020. In June 2020, I noticed a discrepancy between the gas gauge abs the distance to empty indicator. The gas gauge said there was 3/4 of a tank left but the dte said I had only 43 miles. I went to the gas station today (October 2020) to fill up my vehicle and filled it until the gas shut-off tripped. I turned on my car and noticed that my gas gauge said it was only 7/8th full. Thinking it tripped too soon I refilled it again but only 0. 5 gallons went into tank before the shut-off tripped again. When I turned on the car this time the gas gauge indicated it was full. I doubt the gas gauge is functioning properly.
The gas tanks holds 17 gallons or ~570 miles to empty. The most I can fill it is ~14 gallons or ~470 miles to empty. It always clicks off like it's full. I've tried gently topping off, slightly pulling out fuel model etc. Nothing has worked. This has happened since the vehicle was new and driven off the lot. This is all while the vehicle is parked at a gas pump.
2020 Toyota Highlander hybrid platinum awd cannot fill up fuel tank all the way. Max can fill it up when it shows 0 miles left of fuel is less than 13 gallon and car has over 17 gallons. Toyota is saying they don't know what the issue is. No solution at this time for a $50k car.
Once after parking and then twice while driving on a highway, the check hybrid system light, the vsc light, the check engine light, and the caution light all illuminated and the vehicle lost all power including steering assistance . Each time requiring multiple key turns to restart the vehicle into limp home mode. This vehicle has been repaired once before for a similar issue which occurred while driving up a hill in moderate traffic. The tank is full of fuel, the tires are less than a year old, and the vehicle undergoes regular maintenance(which includes a new battery as the one bought from Toyota had a few dead cells after only a year or two). I've read multiple complaints about this online while searching for the underlying issue and there seems to be a related recall that doesn't include my VIN.

My new 2020 Highlander hybrid has a big issue with the gas tank. I get only 460 miles, even if I top it off with the gas spewing out. Toyota advertised a 600 mile range to the Highlander hybrid. The 600 mile fuel range seems very off with the 2020 Highlander hybrid. I have the xle and always have kept it in eco mode. I've driven over a thousand miles on the car, but the mile range estimate on the car is inaccurate and seems to be off a lot if it's supposed to get 600 miles to a tank. More importantly, when the tank is empty (the dash says I had 5 miles left to empty), the gas tank only holds around 13 gallons even though the fuel tank capacity is supposedly 17. 1 gallons. Those 4 gallons make for 140 miles less distance on a tank. If I wait and keep on forcing the gas in slowly, I can get 15 gallons but I don't like the idea of having to keep on pushing the gas nozzle until the gas spews out of the tank just to get 15 gallons in. I know Toyota has been having gas tank issues in other models recently. One of the main reasons I bought the car was for the fuel tank capacity and range. . Read more...
The fuel tank capacity listed as 17. 1 gallons but only take between 12-12. 5 gallon when filled up, even when the reserve has ran down where mile to empty is near zero. Total miles range between fill ups is under 500 miles, far less than the 616 miles range claimed by Toyota.
Toyota advertises and represents that the Highlander hybrid′s fuel tank capacity is 17. 1 gallons, and based on its 35 mpg rating, the range should be about 600 miles. However, I am not able to fill the tank by more than 12 gallons thus reducing my range to 420 miles. I believe there is a defect in the newly designed saddle tank which prohibits the tank from being filled completely thus cheating me out of about 180 miles of driving range.
Fuel gauge does not properly register full hybrid fuel tank (design) and/or defective fuel level sending unit. Toyota service report (6032680/1- 25 Sep 2020); Toyota service report (6046594/1- 21 Jan 2021).
06 Highlander hybrid and am unable to fill gas tank without nozzle clicking off thirty or more times. Doesn't seem to matter what angle, brand of gas or distance. -- my technician said a new gas tank need to be replace and it cost $1700. . . This parts should be a safety measure and work during the live of the vehicle. . . . Toyota sell me defective fuel tank.
July 3, 2016: we bought the car. July 23 5pm I filled up with gas at the chevron. Drove to west la for 15 miles on the 10 fwy with my family in the car, no problem to visit my mom. 8:30pm we left her house to go home. We drove on the street for two minutes and we came to a stop light I braked to a complete stop, and the car died. The dash board screen said put your car in park and start the car. It was dark and many cars were behind me, waiting for me to start my car. We were afraid the car behind us would hit us. My daughters were sitting in the back seat, and my wife in the front passenger seat. I put it in park, tried to start. But it did not, so I pumped the accelerator, then it started. I drove onto the freeway on ramp, got on the 10 fwy heading east. Traffic was good at first, everyone was going 60 mph. Then suddently, the the freeway traffic was bumper to bumper and I had to brake to slow down quickly. When I did, the car died on me again. The dashboard screen said to put the car in park and start my engine. Now, we all began to panic because the cars behind us were going fast, and they might smash into us. We were afraid we would die or be badly injured by the collision coming. Luckily the car behind me stopped without hitting us. Once again, I put it in park, pumped my accelerator, and the car started. At this point, I decided, no matter how slow the freeway traffic is, I will l not brake, because if I do, the car will stall, and we can get hit by the car behind us. So I drove very slowy until we got off the freeway, and arrived home. August 2, 2016: 6:30am I filled up the tank at the shell gas station near my house, being careful not to overfill it. Then I tried to drive to work but the exact same thing happened.
