1 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2021 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 04/21/2021

I reported my gas tank not filling past 12. 9 gallons of gasoline on numerous fill ups on my new 2021 Highlander hybrid platinum to Toyota service department. The Highlander on invoice says it's a 17 gallon tank capacity. Toyota service depart refilled my empty tank to12. 6 gallons verifying my complaint. The service advisor informed me they notified Toyota and Toyota responded in saying they are aware of the issue and there's nothing todo. The Toyota service advisor inform me until there is enough complaints then Toyota would issue a recall ## #vpic# 1 - check digit (9th position) does not calculate properly; 4 - VIN corrected, error in one position only (indicated by ! in suggested VIN), multiple matches found; 14 - unable to provide information for some of the characters in the VIN, based on the manufacturer submission. #vpic#.

2 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2021 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 03/16/2021

This is not a safety issue per se but one of false advertising. Toyota advertises the range of my hybrid Highlander as 600 miles on 17. 1 gal tank at 35 mpg. I do get 35 mpg (which is quite commendable for a vehicle this size) but I cannot fill the fuel tank more than 12-13 gal even when nearly bone-dry empty. In turn I cannot drive any further than 450 miles without filling up. Something is wrong with either the design of fuel tank such that not all the fuel can be accessed or the design of the fuel filler hose such that one cannot fill the tank completely. Another option is perhaps the fuel tank is not truly 17. 1 gallons as documented. Toyota should not advertise a range of 600 miles when this is not realistic even when achieving 35 mpg.

3 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2012 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 02/24/2021

When filling the Highlander with fuel, it looks like a waterfall of fuel leaking onto the ground. It does not appear to be a gas tank issue but a problem within the lines? once you stop fueling with the major leak and go to another area there is no fuel drop underneath the tank.

4 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2020 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 02/05/2021

2020 Toyota Highlander hybrid awd. When filling from almost empty (per low fuel warning light and distance to empty reading almost 0), tank only accepts ~12. 5 gallons before gas station fuel nozzle auto clicks off. the fuel gage at this point indicates that the vehicle is ~7/8 filled. The owners manual warns about not attempting to fill after the fuel nozzle automatically clicks off. Being unable to fill tank may lead to owners attempting to overfill tanks and could result in inadvertently spilling fuel which poses a safety risk and an environmental damage risk. it can also lead to more emissions. a similar problem exists with 2019/2020 Toyota rav4 per NHTSA records, Toyota has proposed a fix for this vehicle but has stated that no other models are affected by this issue. the problem described above is almost identical with the exception that the vehicles have different fuel tank capacities. Toyota has indicated that this is "normal".

5 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2018 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 09/29/2019

When filling the vehicle with gas, after the gas pump shuts off, gas comes surging back out off the filler neck with enough force to splash on whomever is filling the vehicle. This happens at multiple gas stations and different pumps with different flow rates. Each time, the handle is either being held by hand or by latch on pump handle. When the tank is full, pump shuts off and gasoline has ceased to flow from the nozzle, the gasoline then immediately surges back out of the vehicle. There is enough gas that comes back out to make a puddle on the ground. Dealer diagnosed and replaced a faulty vent valve. After two months the problem is happening again. Have provided video evidence to the dealer. Dealer refuses to escalate or recognize it as a safety concern. Refuses to provide loaner vehicle while vehicle is diagnosed and repaired. Due to the nature of this safety issue and high probability of contamination from gasoline and environmental concerns compounded by the recurrent nature of this issue, I feel this needs to be elevated expediently.

6 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2016 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 04/11/2016

Brand new car in the shop twice during first week. Following refueling (not topped off - stopped at first click) the car starts stalling at red lights or at low speeds. Has done this a dozen times. On the highway car stutters, check engine light comes on and traction control becomes disabled. The dealership says this is due to overfilling the gas tank and changed the carbon cartridge for the evac this is definitely not the case. A second refill after the repair confirmed that the problem exists even when filling up very carefully. If gasoline is filling up this component then there is something seriously wrong with this vehicle and its dangerous to drive. Again this car is only 9 days old and in the shop twice for the same reason. Losing power at a busy intersection is dangerous as this has happened in areas where cars are moving quite fast. I was almost rear ended when my car stalled.

7 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2013 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 01/18/2015

On Sunday, January 18, 2015 at approximately 7:50am mst, after filling up the gas tank at the holiday gas station on pleasant grove boulevard in pleasant grove, ut, I began to pull away from the gas pumps. Before exiting the gas station, and after moving about 20 feet at about 5 mph, the engine suddenly revved up to around 4000 rpm. I immediately took my foot entirely off of the gas pedal and slammed my foot down on the brake, holding the brake down firmly. Despite nothing pressing on the gas pedal, and despite the brake pedal being very firmly and continuously pressed, the engine continued to cycle at exactly the same high rpm and the vehicle continue to move forward, straining against the brake. I then switched the gear from drive into neutral. The vehicle stopped moving, but the engine continued to rev at exactly the same rpm. At this time, the engine was continuously revving at approximately 4000 rpm, the car was not moving, the gear was set to neutral, nothing was pressing on the gas/accelerator pedal, and I was firmly pressing on the brake pedal. I then examined the driver footwell to make sure that nothing could possibly be pressing on the gas pedal and indeed there were no obstructions in the driver footwell. I then took my foot off of the brake and pumped the gas pedal several times but the engine did not respond in any way to this action – rather it continued to simply rev at the constant high rpm. I then turned off the ignition, at which time the engine stopped and the vehicle was entirely off. I then switched the gear into park, and then started the ignition and the vehicle started normally. I proceeded to switch the gear into drive, and pressed on the accelerator and the vehicle moved forward as expected without any unexpected acceleration. Since then, the vehicle has behaved normally.
